A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju The term is now well under way and both the academic curriculum and our co-curriculum is in full operation. Unfortunately the sports programme has been put under some strain due to the Sports Hall being partly out of action as we have this in use for the Mock IGCSE and IBDP examinations as an additional examination hall. The new planned astroturf has been delayed and is not ready for use in January. We will keep you updated about its progress. Happily, although there are still COVID -19 precautionary measures in place we will be running our full Bryant programmes this Saturday. Year 11 and Year 13 end their mock examinations on Friday 21 January. They will then be engaged with their teachers discussing their current progress and what to focus on in each subject area to prepare for their examinations in the Summer Term. We congratulateYear 13 who are receiving offers from the UK and for their successes so far. Early decision places in the US have also been offered. The deadline for regular US university admissions has passed. Well done to those students who met all deadlines and made well thought through applications. We have many notable successes so far including the outcomes at Oxford University. Results from Cambridge are due out soon. Well done to all our students for the places they have been offered in both the US and the UK so far. We are proud of all you! We’ll be updating you later on this term when we have a full picture. Over the next few weeks Years 9 and 11 are making important decisions regarding their course choices for IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme. If you are involved this year, please discuss and seek help to prepare and inform yourselves about possible options. We are all here to help you. Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

IGCSE AND IBDP OPTION INFORMATION SESSIONS This is a very important time of year for our current Year 9 students and Year 11 students. They need to make decisions that will help them on their future pathways to success. As they decide which subjects to study at IGCSE and IBDP our teachers are helping them every step of the way.The IGCSE session was held on Friday 14 January. Hosted by our AVP - Ms Claire Easter, we shared the subjects available, how to select them and how to build your ideal schedule. We heard from many of our experienced teachers including Mr Geoff Hall - Head of English and Ms Duygu Bulut - Head of Maths. This session was followed by Year 9 Open House (Online) where parents had a chance to meet with individual teachers and discuss their children’s options. On Friday 21 January, Ms Justine Oliver hosted the IBDP options session. She explained how students should best select their 6 DP subjects. Ms Izabella Sloczynska joined Mr Hall, Ms Bulut and Head of Year 11, Ms Waterson to share her knowledge of how each subject helps individual university applications in the US, UK and the rest of the world. If you want to learn more about any part of these processes we invite you to revisit the sessions on YouTube and to view our IGCSE and IBDP Guides HERE and HERE

GIRLS IN SCIENCE FOBISIA - Girls in Science Event - Hosted by King Henry VIII School - Malaysia On December 7, girls from NLCS Jeju joined with schools from all over Asia to discuss with leading scientists the challenges and opportunities faced in studying science. This was in partnership with Leeds University, UK and Universtiti Sains, Malaysia. Dr Sue Deucars, Dr Naziah Shafin and Dr Nurha Ghani shared insights into their daily lives and the work they do both in their laboratories and networking with their wider audience. Unfortunately, due to the tighter COVID restrictions we had to meet them online. However, we had an opportunity to pre-submit questions to the scientists and also ask questions during the live link. Many of the girl’s questions were asked and answered during the event. Our NLCS Jeju students say “It was a pleasant and meaningful time. I felt they were really willing to give us tips to support and assist us. I am very grateful to them.” “I gained more information about the status and role that women play in the field of science and how the stereotypes in science jobs have changed through time in a positive way.” “I feel like I have learnt a way to stay passionate about whatever I do and believe in myself. I was someone who always remained uncertain about my decision. However, after having the chance to participate in Girls in Science, I feel more confident.” Ms Shayna Coughlan adds “ I would like to thank the girls for their participation and engagement, hopefully the next event will allow us to all be together.” Watch out for more FOBISIA events coming up!
HOUSE STEP Our students are going to be VERY busy over the next few weeks as they all take on the Charity Miles Step Challenge. This is one of the most active House competitions we’ve embraced to date. Monday saw the students take to the perimeter of NLCS Jeju to start to amass their miles. If you want to know more then please contact your House Coordinator. We can all join in!
BOARDING ACTIVITIES WELLBEING - HAPPY PILLOWCASES Pyoseon Year 7 boarders spent the last Sunday afternoon of term engaged in designing personalised pillow cases around the theme of what brings them happiness. These were drawn on the pillowcases, ranging from K-pop music to a thought of creating success. What was really keeping them happy throughout the activity, though, was them spending the time together with their loving boarding friends, as seen in their smiles in the photo! Thank you to Miri Kang for organising this lovely activity - the girls look so happy!
BALLOON RELEASE Miri Kang’s second fun activity was the Balloon Release which the Boarding Homes took part in on Sunday January 16. Out with the old, in with the new! The Pyoseon and Yongduam Year 8 and 9 boarders spent the Sunday afternoon, letting go of any ‘clutter-feelings’ and old worries by flying their hopes and New Years’ resolutions into the sky. They popped their “worry balloons”, and worked hard to make their “hope balloons” fly over the fence. It was super windy - and that helped the worries fly away!
TALENT AWARD OF KOREA 2021 We had great news during the winter holiday. Year 12 Jeslyn (Seojung) Park and Year 13 Sean (Seonghyun) Yoon received the Talent Award of Korea 2021. It is an award given by the Deputy Prime Minister of Social Affairs and Minister of Education every December by selecting 50 outstanding talents. Jeslyn was selected in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the environmental field, including serving as a representative of future generations in resource circulation practice platforms in 2020. Sean was recognized for his outstanding performance in various fields, including mathematics, statistics, debates, and volunteer work, and his potential to grow into a future convergence talent. We also want to acknowledge Jeslyn’s generosity - she has donated her 2,000,000 KRW prize to Jenam Orphanage. This makes us very proud indeed. Congratulations to Jeslyn and Sean!

FOREIGN EXPLANATION & CONTENTS of CULTURE HERITAGE NATIONAL STUDENT CONTEST Our brilliant Junior students made another achievement. Year 3 Steve (Yoong) Kim, Dael Choi, and Soul (Soyul) Kim participated in 13th Foreign Explanation and Contents of Cultural Heritage National Student Contest last December and won the second prize. The first prizes were awarded to the top 2 participants and the second prizes were awarded to the next top 4 participants regardless of age group. Steve, Dael and Soul competed with not only other junior students but also middle school, high school and even college students and achieved this great result! They created a fun clip explaining the Tripitaka Koreana, the complete collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on over eighty thousand woodblocks. You can watch it HERE.
THE 5TH JEJU INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL Music is one of the important elements of NLCS Jeju. School provides generous opportunities and they often extend to rich experiences outside of school. Hyeon (Seokhyeon) Moon, the Principal Cellist of NLCS Jeju Sinfonietta Orchestra, shared his various activities showing his musical talent during this winter holiday.
“On 5 January 2022, the 5th Jeju International Chamber Music Festival (Winter Voyage) was launched, and I took part in the Young Artist Concert, the first voyage, on that day.The Young Artist Concert, as the first programme of the Festival, is designed to discover outstanding talents across Jeju and support students and young artists with promising futures on Jeju. And so, it was a great honour and a privilege to have performed with an external invitation from the Festival. I even won a prize in the music competition, coordinated by the JICMF, with students majoring in music, and it seems to act as a catalyst for me to love the cello even more. The interview with JIBS was another unique experience. At the interview, via live visible radio, I was able to comfortably talk about the afterimage of the concert without realising it. https://youtu.be/mE3BnoJ6aGk In this day and age, music is comforting and precious to everyone. I truly appreciate being able to practice, learn, and give comfort to myself and others.”
SCIENCE TECHS ACHIEVEMENT We are very serious about all our staff recruitment - from faculty to support staff in all areas. Our staff are committed to ongoing professional development and training. Nowhere is this more important than in our Science Labs. We would like to congratulate Karen Holland Senior Lab Technician) and Dan Whitney who have now gained accreditation with the Association for Science Education and are now considered official Registered Science Technicians.
The accreditation gives formal recognition of the knowledge and experience within this technical role and recognises them as professionals in their field, delivering essential scientific services, with a vast amount of knowledge. The award recognises an individual’s highly developed technical competence and professional skills (as stated by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC.org)) and is the only registered technical award that is uniquely available to science technicians. Professional registration with the Science Council provides independent recognition of these achievements and commitment to the role and maintains the exact standards required to join a global community of professional scientists. Well done Karen and Dan!

JUNIOR SCHOOL DONATION Have you heard about Jeju Batman? He is sponsoring the elderly who live alone, orphanage and people in need in Jeju wearing Batman costumes. His batman suit was inspired by Lenny Robinson who was an American businessman called “Batman on Road 29” and visited children’s hospitals in Batman costumes giving gifts and hope to sick children. Jeju Batman also donates and delivers rice, side dishes, ramen, kimchi, etc. Junior school students join this good deed by donating KRW 1,156,100 from the last Casual Clothes Day. MUSIC CORNER IPAD MUSIC TECHNOLOGY PROJECT Head of JS Music Cristyn Draper and Grad, Kenneth Cormack have been spearheading a wonderful new Year 5 Music Technology project this term, The interactive sessions involve them listening to live instruments and analysing songs, then transferring what they hear to GarageBand on iPads. So far, they have already learned how to add multiple tracks, loop instruments and balance levels. At the end of the project, each student will have recorded their own unique version of “Believer” by Imagine Dragons. The children are so enthused by this project. Thank you to Mr Cormack for delivering such an inspiring project and to Ms Draper for continually updating and energising our Music curriculum.
