Jay Byrom Senior School Librarian

I have an MSc in Library Science, and worked in both secondary and primary school libraries before coming to NLCS Jeju in 2022.

The best part of the job is when I am able to help students find new books that they love, but would never have thought to try otherwise.

My favourite book is ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ by Agatha Christie - a classic murder mystery with an ending that I won’t spoil.

My favourite author is Stephen King - for his nonfiction books. Covering the horror genre and writing as a craft, they are both engaging and insightful.

My favourite genre is science fiction. It can cover any number of subjects and address any number of questions that we can come up with. As a genre it ranges from comedy, to absurdity, to dystopia, and much in between, often engaging with contemporary issues as it goes.

I am currently reading ‘Dark Tales’ by Shirley Jackson. Currently reading

Favourite part

Favourite book /author/genre

I am happiest when I have conversations with students who come to the library and when I see students happy for reading and finding books and information from the library.

My favourite book is ‘연어 by 안도현’ - ‘The Salmon Who Dared to Leap Higher by Do-Hyun Ahn’ which tells the story of a salmon’s journey back to the river to lay eggs and die.

My favourite author is also ‘안도현’ - ‘Do-Hyun Ahn’. He is not only a fiction author but also poetry and his poems are written as everyday things, but they are quite creative.

My favourite genre is the poem. Poetry is short, but it implies a lot of thought and imagination. Also, poetry can be interpreted differently and variously every time it is read. It fosters our imagination and sensitivity. I do think a good short poetry is better than a thick fiction book.

I am currently reading ‘Dark Tales’ by Shirley Jackson. I am reading ‘ 아몬드 by 손원평’ - Almond by Won-Pyung Sohn
