NLCS JEJU NEWSLETTER 25 MARCH 2022
OUR NEW BIG 8 BRAIN DISSECTION EVENT DANCE ENRICHMENT WEEK STUDENTS
3
A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju As usual we have much to celebrate as will be evident from this newsletter. The theme of my address for Founders Day 2022 will be on community and individuals and in particular the community of NLCS Jeju. I would like to reiterate my thanks once again to the exceptional student leaders in their many different roles such as within the Big Eight or leading Societies in order to create the strong and vibrant community which we have here at NLCS Jeju. Their success is celebrated here. Our community has been greatly challenged over the last few weeks as faculty, support staff and students have all had to cope with the omicron variant of COVID-19. This has put great strain on all our staff who have faced many additional responsibilities and tasks as a result of their colleagues’ absences. We are all indebted to their efforts which have enabled the full life of the school to continue with engaging lessons, numerous CCAs, Bryants as well as the amazing musical concerts and school productions such as the Tempest. Students have also faced some of their early examinations for IGCSEs and the IB Diploma Programme. We look forward to the final week of the Spring Term culminating in our Founder’s Day ceremonies - Tuesday for Junior School and Thursday for Senior School. School will then go into recess for the Spring holiday for two weeks. We hope that all will use the break to recover, rest and prepare ready for the challenges of the Summer Term. I wish you all a healthy and enjoyable Spring break. Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

Hear from Ms Lynne Oldfield as she delivers the NLCS Address. You can also listen to the singing of New Home of Daffodils and Where’er You Walk. First School - Tuesday March 29 - 9.00 - 9.30 Junior School - Tuesday March 29 - 10.30 - 11.45 Livestream Link HERE Senior School - Thursday March 31 - 14.15 - 15.30 Livestream Link HERE
MINISTRY OF CULTURE, SPORTS AND TOURISM Well done to Fred Lee in Year 13 who has been appointed a Policy Reporter by the Minisitry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This is another great example of our students’ broad perspective and willingness to step out of their comfort zones! Fred says “During my time in NLCS Jeju I’ve been involved in so many journals, initiatives and groups such as The Hub. This student journalism career is one that I am now being paid to do! I am really grateful for this next step in my writing career. To share my own perspective is an honour!”
MEDICAL SOCIETY - BRAIN DISSECTION EVENT Stella Han and Shawn Lew of the Medical Society are fantastic examples to us all. The Society is very busy still, after the showcase Medical Review event organised by Brian Jeong and Sarah Park and their teams in November. Stella and Shawn called upon the expertise of our staff and organised a Lunchtime Brain Dissection - led by Dr Paul Ananda Raj and assisted by Jessica Laughton, Head of Psychology who added an extra emotional explanation to the physically dissected part of the brain. Each student got to dissect their own brain! You can watch the video and hear from those involved. Thank you to Mike Kim for his film making skills!
BIOLOGY SOCIETY - DISSECTION EVENT Shine Ryu Not to be outdone, the Biology Society were conducting Frog Dissections in an adjoining lab! This session was student led - with Shine Ryu, Year 12, leading teams of students in dissecting a frog to see its inner workings. Another excellent example of academic enrichment of the finest kind. Shine tells us The Biology Society has been working hard to provide an opportunity for the students to recognize and relate body structures through dissections. For the past two weeks, the members of the Biology Society performed frog dissections to see, touch, and explore the various organs in the body. This activity allowed students to understand how these systems work within animals, including humans. The organs of frogs, and the way they are laid out in the body, are very similar to those of humans; it provides insight for students about their body functions. The intriguing opportunity of hands-on dissection of the frog left many students fascinated. Through this experience, students were able to gain a better understanding of how different organs function in our digestive system and other different anatomical features of vertebrates. Overall, our dissection was a huge success providing students with a valuable interactive experience and in developing their interest in biology. Both these dissections took the best part of lunchtime showing the commitment of both teachers and students to true academic enrichment. Take a look at the pictures below.

REFLECTIONS ON MATHS ENRICHMENT WEEK We shared lots of information about our last Maths Enrichment Week. The students and teachers have had time to reflect on everything which they have done and they wanted to share their thoughts with us! Ms Duygu Bulut - Head of Maths Maths Enrichment Week in Senior School provided a wonderful experience for our students from Year 7 to Year 12. They participated in various mathematics related activities and enjoyed the week. The Mathematics society published NLCS jeju Maths Journal Volume 1 and shared this beautifully presented and highly academic work with the rest of the school. We are very proud of our incredibly talented and dedicated students in the Mathematics Society who contributed massively to the success of the enrichment week, and of course our unbelievable team of department teachers whose passion and expertise were on display all week. Highlights for older students included Year 12s piecing together some well known proofs, and getting creative with 3D printing. Year 10s defended their calculations of a global question in a lively debate on stage and Maths Soc students delivered lectures beyond the syllabus to Year 11. In Key stage 3 Year 7s used a lot of energy in a memory based race to build 3D models, Years 8 and 9 tried a selection of activities from our partners at the World Maths Championships. Hyeonbi (Lucy) Jee - Winner of the “Top in the World” award for MATHEMATICS at IGCSE explains how she prepared to be on eof the best Maths students in the world - and she offers advice for younger students Throughout my IGCSE years, I’ve been prepared through various challenging questions which eventually provided me to explore different levels of mathematics. The active discussion between friends during maths class helped me a lot because it made me cooperate with different people and learn how others solve the same problem. To further challenge myself, I often solved the extra-hard questions during class time which helped me to apply the concepts I learnt in different levelled questions. The skills I gained from this IGCSE course are helping me in this IB course. As a student who hopes to work in the science and mathematics field in the future, I think the challenges and help from maths teachers helped me a lot. I think I was able to prepare well for each test during termtime and during each vacation by maintaining my own pace in which I made a learning plan and faithfully followed my goal.
For the students taking the IGCSE exam, I would like to tell them to try solving different problems and managing their time well during the exam. Lucy is Co Chair of the Maths Society so her advice is very valuable! Seungwon (Daniel) Yoo - Chair It was challenging to prepare activities for this Maths Enrichment week due to a lack of time, but our aim was simple in Maths Enrichment Week. I wanted to give inspiration to people outside the society. I wanted them to enjoy maths that is not restricted to exams and ultimately explore it for their own sake. For our society members, I wanted them to develop their maths ability and problem solving skills. I am really proud of our society members because organizing their own activity would have been definitely challenging, but they did it perfectly. Thank you for participating!
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Joon Seok (Aaren) Kang - Co-Chair We aimed to break down barriers! We wanted students to think of mathematics as not a subject which is formulaic, but a subject that they can explore and think out of the box. I would like to acknowledge the people who contributed to the interactive activities that took place in front of the library every break and lunch time because the activities that are prepared are not what the students would normally encounter during the lessons, but also require creativity.
Daewoong (James) Kang - Secretary I am proud that everyone contributed so much and made everything possible. Especially, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of people who contributed to the Maths Journal, because without them, the high-quality and the high level of academic rigour wouldn’t have been maintained in the new edition. I believe that this enrichment week made our members feel a sense of belonging to our Society and will stimulate further contributions to mathematics and our community as a whole. Yejune (William) Kim - Publicity Officer Before I came to NLCS Jeju, I had a minor interest in mathematics. However, here in NLCS Jeju, as I was provided with substantial opportunities, I began to enjoy mathematics truly and aim to fulfil my mathematical pursuit. The NLCS Maths department has made a significant contribution to my mathematical development by providing me with various mathematical experiences such as UKMT, BMO, NEAMC, and WMC. I’ve competed in most of the competitions offered to me, and I am satisfied with the results because I had garnered the rudiments for my pursuit. Moreover, NLCS furnishes mathematical experience outside the curriculum as Math Society does. Notably, the members of Math Society have cooperated in preparing for Math Enrichment Week. I felt proud to see the students enjoying the exhibition and interaction during break and lunchtime. Furthermore, the members of our society have devoted themselves to publishing the recent edition of the Journal. I appreciate their effort since it would have been impossible to produce such a high-quality academic journal without them. I hope that many students got closer to mathematics, and some got to follow their mathematical pursuit through Maths Enrichment Week!
JUNIOR SCHOOL MATHS ENRICHMENT WEEK Our Junior School students also enjoyed their Maths Enrichment Week taking part in lots of activities coordinated by Mr Simon Downes and Ms Vivienne Brooks. These included tree measuring, a treasure hunt and fun with the number 2022!
CANADIAN COMPUTER CHALLENGE We have great news of more NLCS Jeju competition success. Mr Tajvir Singh, Head of Computer Science, tells us all about the Canadian Computing Challenge(CCC) 2022. The competition was held on 17 February and our students performed outstandingly in the Junior division. He tells us “ The Junior division does not refer to any age category, it is about the programmers who are developing their skills but not a beginner. There were many first timers from KS3 students and they all did well! 11 students got Distinction and one of the students, Daniel Chang, was ranked Number 1 in the world. He got a perfect score of 100%. The KS3 students got a good start in competitions to challenge them and sharpen their Computer Science skills. Many of them took their learning to another level!”
SENIOR SCHOOL ENGLISH We are SO impressed by Yuzhuo Wang in Ms Sarah Thornley’s Year 9 English class who has written an Elizabethan sonnet for part of her reading homework. It’s inspired by the book Supernova by Marissa Meyer (third in the Renegades series). How impressive is this?
Renegades
Nova Artino had a daring vision A world of not dictatorship but peacefulness, But until then she had a secret mission, As she stands amongst her supposed enemies; Among heroes and villains as battle raged For the better or worse the Ace had risen, Identities revealed, the sentinel got caged, And a single move changed her position; As the destined foes meet with earnest Terrors of victims raged so far yet so close; None had dared to not try their hardest For both sides had everything to lose, Finally they got their freedom and equality But for how long until they must face reality?
Yuzhuo Wang
JUNIOR SCHOOL ENGLISH Ms Meghan Peters, Head of Junior School English set her Year 6 students a Cold Task in class recently. She asked Write a story inspired by the image, showing how you build action in your writing. How can you keep your reader engaged? How can you keep the story moving? How can you build the pace? Minseo Kwak’s piece really stood out! What do you think? What incredible creative thinking and writing!
The town was now a house. The people had tried to evacuate. They didn’t succeed. They eventually died out. Left the whole land with no human voice. The plants took over. Naturally, a border was made. Not that people would notice, but if everything stays the way it’s supposed to, nature will get used to it. It’ll think society will soon break down, if not protected. It’ll make a border, not knowing that it did. Soon, the plants will adapt. The insects will adapt. The soil will adapt. Sun will shine on the leaves and rain will be able to enter into little holes, but as soon as it does, the holes will close again. The only thing no living thing knew, not even nature itself knew. Not a clue. Maybe because the plants were full of themselves. Maybe the wind slept all day long. Maybe, the boy was just great at hiding. The day started off as it usually did. Silently. A bright light rising from behind the wooden house reminded the plants that morning still existed. Though it was new and joyful that they owned the world to themselves, they almosted suffered from the lack of sound. Birds, being the animal able to make the most sound, tried to chirp and quack every second, telling the air there was still life in here. But, it was proven science that making too much noise would form a sore throat. The sore throat was a pain for the birds, and for the animals who had to listen to the sounds from sore throated birds. Newborn living - with legs of course, as it would be a terrible thing to pluck plants - would be taken to the only left house. Today was a busy day. Four spiders had given birth to thousands of eggs about two weeks ago and the newborns were taken to the house. This house was small. Very very small.
If more than two boys were hiding in the so-called ‘town’ they would have been caught right away. The boy was lucky to have survived. If he was right, he was the only left human being on Earth. He expected the same on any planet. But he couldn’t be sure about any other universes. He didn’t even know the order of the planets in his own. So he decided that he was lacking knowledge too much to state that argument. The boy lived in the left house. He had learned how to keep quiet for very long and how to hold his breath when any animal came into the house. Now, the day was wonderful for animals. All these spiders would bring the ‘town’ more life. However, before the newborn spiders could call themselves newborn spider citizens, they would have to listen to a very long speech from the leader of the ‘town’. Each of them. Even if the speech was exactly the same, they would have to hear it again and again thousands of times. For the boy, this meant that he couldn’t come out of the crumbling closet for hours. He knew he should get ready for it. Unlucky for the animals and lucky for the boy, the speech did not happen. Unlucky for everyone, the reason for this delay was because there had been a loud crash. Only the elders had heard this crash before. The eldest of the elders. They said that it was a monster that crashed. It had crashed right beside the border. All the animals went to the end of the border. ‘Unbelievable…’ ‘How is that possible…’ ‘It can’t be.’ There had been a… scratch in the border. A scratch in the unbreakable border. Murmurs went around the animals to insects to plants. This had to be an omen. A bad one.
IB HISTORY DEBATE Year 12 History Debate: Was the British policy of appeasement justified? Mr Ben Matthews has shared a great class debate which really engaged the IBDP students - and the Year 10 judges! He tells us “The winning team was made up of Yongjae Kim, You Rim Nam, Kenneth Chisoon Park, Eunju Seo, and Inseo Youn. They argued that the policy of appeasement was justified because Britain was not ready for war in 1938, the British government needed to prioritise the welfare of their own citizens, the British public did not support going to war, and that at the time the USSR was perceived as a greater threat than Germany. Joseph Fernandes, Hyun Woo Kim, Woohyun Kim, Taehwan Lee, Ji Hong Min, and Seojung Park argued that the British policy of appeasement was not justified. They argued that appeasement allowed Germany to become stronger by expanding its territory and gathering resources which meant that in the long term it became more difficult to defeat Germany. Mr James Munday’s Year 10 History class were in attendance, and they acted as the judges for the debate, and decided that the stronger argument was made by the students who claimed appeasement was justified. Jacob Long in particular stood out by asking several well-thought out questions to the presenters. “ What do you think? Which side would you take?
ART, ART, ART Thank you to Ms Rachel Donaldson who shared her ‘Objects of Out Time’ Exhibition which is currently up in the art department. The Year 7 students used photoshop to create artwork inspired by Michael Craig-Martin. How fabulous are these?
DANCE ENRICHMENT WEEK We love Dance at NLCS Jeju. You just need to look around the walls to see lots of posters and Arts Week is always enriched by amazing dance performances. This week has been Dance Enrichment Week and Ms Stella Taylor and her team have been working incredibly hard to make it fun for everyone! Some activities were • Interactive boards and information boards outside the library • Just Dance competition. Near the Library (Prizes available) • Year 10 - Assembly presentation. Dance through the ages, a practical demonstration. • Busking performance in the Green Gallery • Just Dance Competition • Dance Students Shine and Victoria - Lecture in Library Students who dance are passionate about their performances! Dance also provides an amazing bonus to students to compliment academics. Our new Head Girl, Julia Back is a passionate dancer and she says “ I can’t believe I’m at a school where I can balance my academics with other things I love like dance!”
Ms Taylor suggests you watch lots of different types of dance - start with these Monday Mambo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbgt5byRQUs from West Side Story Tango Tuesday - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmBAsNlmWpo Waakin Wednesday - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brQaeEzusW8 Tap dance Thursday - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/gm63OKAR4Fo Flashmob Friday - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_hlvRNgGOQ And why not learn some TikTok dances https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FySQK4FOaVQ
We talked to Shine Ryu in Year 12 who leads the way as a student combining her love of Dance - academically and for pleasure - with her academic studies. Shine is an allrounder who can be organising a Frog Dissection session one day, winning a Latin competition the next and then starring in a Dance Recital the next! Shine is studying Dance for her IBDP. “I am really interested in combining my love of Dance with my interest in Science. The lecture I gave this week focuses on creating a dance called Constant Speed which is inspired by Einstein’s theories of Brownian Motion, Photo- Electric Eff ects and Special Relativity. This is interesting because it is really unusual for choreographers to use science as a stimulus. For my solo piece I am choreographing a piece about neurons and synapses within the brain. As a student of Biology and Dance this seems perfect for me!” Shine has been dancing since a very early age. It’s long been a favourite pastime. As she’s in Year 12 she’s thinking about what to do next and has her sights set on a Major in Cognitive Sciences. Shine is passionate about the concept of dance therapy for diseases so this may be in her future.
SPORTS ENRICHMENT WEEK A couple of weeks ago we had another exciting Sports Enrichment Week. Across Senior and Junior Schools the Sports department organised some great fun events - students (and teachers) challenged themselves and each other to take risks and try something new! • Ms Sophie Perry and Head of Sport, Mr Glenn Roberts shared a fascinating assembly with Year 9 talking about success in sport and touching a little on their careers - Ms Perry was a professional footballer and Mr Roberts a professional cricketer • Mr Alistair Gainey, Mr Andy Cronin and Ms Miriam Davies delivered active assemblies in the Junior School • Junior School students took part in activities within tutor time (Quizzes and discussions) • Mr Gaspar Villanueva and Ms Sarah Gulley led challenges on the spin bikes at break times. Winners received an NLCS Jeju goodie bag. Were you one of them?! Sport is a wonderful way to balance the academics that we do so well here! Try something new next term! Glenn Roberts will be presenting the End of Term Sports Review in our celebration assembly next week. He gave us a sneak peek! “Even though it has been a difficult, and at times frustrating term for all involved in Sport due to the ongoing pandemic - we have still managed to play some Sport, albeit very limited.
Within school, during CCA and Bryant the attitude, commitment and focus of the squads has been excellent in training and it is such a shame that some of the KISAC competitions had to be cancelled. We have had some fantastic individual sporting achievements. In Fencing, two students are making a great impression. Taeho Kim in Year 10 is competing in the Jeju National competitions and Derek Kim in Year 11 is regularly travelling to the mainland to compete at National level in both Junior and Adult events. We have some excellent and successful skiers at NLCS who compete at national level; in Year 5 there is Lucas Lee, in Year 6 we have Lael Kim who does Slopestyle skiing. Then in Year 7 we have Aiden Lee and Eban Seo. Eban is a downhill skier and has been winning Korean Junior Championship events throughout this winter. We have reported on Eban’s success through our social media, but we are pleased that we can celebrate her success here today. “ Mr Roberts will be presenting colours and certificates in that assembly and we congratulate all the winners (too many to list here and we don’t want to spoil the surprise!)
What will you try next term?
BEING A BOARDER - A TRUE LIFE DIARY Thank you very much to our Student Marketing Society who organised this great piece by Yumin (Angela) Lee, A Pyoseon boarder. Angela gives us a great insight into what it’s really like to be a boarder here at NLCS Jeju. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PYOSEON BOARDER Being in Pyoseon allows us to engage with each other more than any other students. Chatting and hanging around with our friends has become a part of our daily routine. We gain energy from each other to get through tiring school hours! When we first came to Pyoseon, we all came from different houses (Mulchat, Jeoji, Sarah, Geomun, Noro) however, the more we spent time together, we felt a special bond with each other. Everyday, we talk about our concerns and future plans. Yet, as we all know, the most interesting topic is our crush stories! Being far away from our families, we naturally rely heavily on our friends, so we talk deeply about most things. On Friday after school, we have an hour of breakout time, when we do not get our electronics. Most of the time, we sit around the TV in the girls’ common room and watch Netflix or K-pop videos. Personally, I rarely watched Netflix and Korean idol videos before coming to Pyoseon. But now, I have learned more about other students’ interests, I get it!! The breakout time is a short but essential part of the week for us after an exhausting five days of school. During Saturday breakout sessions, we often play volleyball or badminton, but most of the time, we play songs loudly in the dance room and play around with each other. Sometimes people who are passing by look at us strangely, but we definitely have a good time! The genre of the music we turn on is different every time, but we are always excited just by the fact that we hang around together. We often go to the Junior School playground to chill out. The playground is our secret place (yet it no longer is as I just have talked about it!) We usually bring a huge speaker, turn on a playlist, and sit on the swings. With a beautiful sunset and chatting with each other, our stress from the weekday flies away. Many students also talk about NCT, a Korean idol group, and they compete with each other about their devotion towards the group. They enjoy filming the process of opening photo cards. These students buy many albums that contain photo cards and decorate them by themselves. Not all the students were fans of the NCT at the beginning of the year. But now, the majority of the students are in love with the group as they were influenced by one another. We may seem to be noisy and laughing at every moment. What happens in the boarding home is much more dynamic than you think; it is amazing and grateful to share the moments of crying and laughing together.

FIRST SCHOOL MUSIC RECITALS A love for Music and an ability to perform starts very early at NLCS Jeju. Ms Cristyn Draper has been showcasing some of our youngest musicians in a series of 3 Spring Recitals in the First School. Instruments ranged from the piano to the violin, the cello to the drums. The children were all amazing! You can watch all three Recitals on our YouTube channel - HERE, HERE, HERE
THE TEMPEST We love our Shakespeare here at NLCS Jeju. Many consider him our finest British writer. Why not take a look at the Senior School Drama Production where some very talented Year 7 - 10 students will be performing The Tempest on the PAC stage tomorrow, Saturday at 14.00. There will be some boarders in the audience, but we cannot invite parents so please take a look at our livestream link HERE
LIBRARIES Please see this wonderful long piece by Hager Braham HERE on why it is vital to read aloud to your child. Just consider • Connect with your child • Help your child do well in school • Improve interaction and comprehension development • Facilitate literacy development • Instil a love of language • Improve parenting skills by reading and listening to your child read to you • Maximise family time • Reading is FUN!
CCAs/BRYANTS HMS BEAGLE BRYANT Brandon Yoon from the HMS Beagle Bryant sent us some great updates on the latest Beagle expeditions! Students took a trip to the Gotjawal Forests. “ For the last voyage of this block, we set out to the local Sanyang Gotjawal with Mrs.Prichard and Ms Bull - for a more vibrant ecological expedition. Although the terrain was rough, moving through thicket and slopes, every single member of the crew was very enthusiastic all throughout the journey and emerged from the forest undefeated. We were able to encounter new fauna and flora of Jeju not present in the NLCS Jeju Campus and had the most vibrant morning.” Talk to Brandon or Ms Kym Prichard if you want to learn more!
OLLE CLEAN UP NLCS TRAIL JEJU SKIERS More great results from one of our favourite co curricular activities. The Olle Trail Clean We always try to share the amazing achievements of our students whenever we have Up activities are so popular we have several groups. Mr James Munday who heads out a chance, and it’s astonishing that there are always new stories to share. We’ve shared every week with Olle Group C tells us “They do such a great job and they really care about stories of our amazing Eban Seo - and hot on her heels we have Lucas, Raina, and Aiden what they do. It’s the perfect activity - fresh air, great views, exercise - and we are doing who have all had a busy winter participating in various ski competitions and showing off good! Obviously I’m biased but I think Olle C are the best!” their talent! We know how much effort is behind these results and we are very proud of them all! Jusang Kim Year 12, student leader of Olle C gives his perspective Year 5 Lucas (Seungyun) Lee I first did this Bryant in Year 10 and loved the fact that you would go onto various olle trails, which (even though I lived in Jeju for 8ish years at that time,) I had never ventured onto The 1st Yafit Cup KYSA Youth Ski Race - 1st Place in U10 properly. When people speak of Jeju, people would speak of either the Olle trail or mount The 1st Korea University Ski Team Association President Cup Youth Ski Race - 1st Place Halla, so I thought it would be nice to go on various Olle trails and properly explore Jeju in U10 for once, taking in all its beauty. This Bryant is part of a large Olle trail clean up project The 10th YMCA Youth Ski Race - 4th Place in U10 that is done in Jeju. People from various parts of Korea come together to clean various The 3rd YMCA National Ski Race - 1st Place in U12 parts of the trail while venturing on it, in turn creating a sense of a whole community. It The 42nd Seoul Sports Council President Cup Youth Ski Race - 1st Place in U10 feels like I am part of the Jeju people who are passionate about keeping the earth clean. The 1st Alpine Ski Racing Championships (KSIA) - 3rd place in U-10 Also, whenever I see someone venturing the Olle trails, I know that person is enjoying the beauty thanks to us and the others in the Olle trail clean up community keeping the trails Year 6 Raina (Lael) Kim clean and enjoyable. The 6th Sejong Province Ski Association President Cup - 1st in U12 Being a leader of the Olle trail group is a fascinating experience. Even if the planning of the The 52nd Korean Ski Association National President Cup - 1st in U12 routes takes a few hours some time, when it is the time of Bryant and people appreciate the route, there is no better feeling than it. It feels great showing people places where they Year 7 Aiden (Jaebaek) Lee wouldn’t have gone to and possibly never have found out. This is something students in our group say a lot: “I should come here next time with my girlfriend” which I always feel The 3rd YMCA National Ski Race - 6th in U14 great about. Thinking about it, they appreciate the trail so much that they would like to take a person that is important to them. The immense pride and joy that stems from appreciation is unmatched. The leader role is pure joy to me, and a role in which I try to show people all of Jeju’s natural beauties.

GOODBYE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MARKETING Our Director of Marketing, Communications and PR, Ms Jane Forster, is leaving us at the end of this term. Here she tells us what makes NLCS Jeju the best school in the world. I have loved my time here at NLCS Jeju. It’s a very special school and what makes it so incredible are the students. I have been very lucky to be involved in all elements of our marketing and communications process which means telling the many stories of our School to our own community and the world in general! I’ve met students from Reception to Year 13 and I’ve watched many of them grow up before my eyes. I’ve seen incredible performances, listened to exceptional music and marvelled at superb visual art across all ages. Our Arts are something truly spectacular here. Last year’s Arts Week stands out for me - Wicked, Fantasy Fashion, Hip Hop Night and, surely, not many schools have had a light show as we saw projected onto the boarding homes organised by the truly generous and talented, Mr and Mrs Kim, parents of Yoon Sang Kim (Class of 2021) I’ve had my eyes opened to real academic success. I’ve seen children, for whom English is a second language, take on the world and outperform most of their peers. We’re a GLOBAL Top 50 IBDP School! We should be so proud of ourselves. Our teachers deserve every compliment for the way they inspire, support and encourage their classes. There isn’t enough space to describe every department - Sports, languages, Arts, Sciences, Maths, Humanities, Boarding, Academics, Pastoral, Early Years to DP. You all rock! And support staff must never be overlooked. Without them, the school would grind to a halt. To see so many students in my office sharing things they’ve done has been a treat. Every day I hear “Miss, I’ve finished my magazine!” “Miss, we are putting on a show!” “Miss, I won a competition. “ This is all wonderful and life affirming. I also love the quiet success of our service oriented teams. What impresses me most is the sustained efforts. Many of these initiatives have been going on for almost 10 years. To help an orphanage once is great - to help an orphanage many times a year, every year and do it with gladness - is a different thing entirely. We’ve been the Korea Herald International School of the Year 2021 and won the prestigious Best British International School of the Year 2021. I’m very proud! There is more to come for you all, I’m sure. NLCS Jeju students - you will rule the world. I will miss you with all my heart and I look forward to seeing you on the global stage - running companies, leading countries, playing first violin, discovering elusive cures for diseases. And just being happy. I leave Marketing in very safe hands. Please contact Mr Mike Kim, Ms YoonJin Kim, Ms Mihyeon Song and Mr James Tuffs. You know where they are. (And if you don’t it’s 3F Senior School between the Library and Music). I’ll be watching you! Jane Forster

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Another great opportunity for professional development hosted by NLCS Jeju. It’s our Science eJAWS for all FOBISIA schools. Other schools in the region are invited to join us for a day of workshops and discussions, sharing and learning on all things to do with the sciences. We are always striving to be the best! If you have any queries, please contact csannegadu@nlcsjeju.kr
MUSIC CORNER ORCHESTRAL SPECTACULAR We had a wonderful treat on Wednesday evening with the Orchestral Spectacular - a showcase of the very best musical talent. The programme featured music both new and old, classical and pop. We loved the Wind Ensemble, Journey Sinfonia, The O’Sulloc Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra - and a (literally) show stopping combination of all for the finale of Human Nature. Mr Tamlyn summed it up at the end when he praised the students and teachers who had stepped in when others were laid low. He complimented all the students who have performed, rehearsed and supported each other all year. If you didn’t get a chance to see the performance then you can catch it HERE
Celts and Romans This week Year 3 took part in a fantastic Celts and Romans Day. Our teachers really bring history to life! Thank you for the pictures, Year 3 team!
FOCUS ON THE VOICE We are so lucky to have Ms Ruth Baker in our Music department. Ruth is leading our choral efforts with singing classes, lessons and many opportunities to use our voices! She explains why YOU should join in where you can! “The human voice is an incredible instrument. It is the most portable instrument that everyone has and the more you use your voice the greater your timbre, control and range will become. Singing is considered to promote both physical and mental wellbeing as well as promoting social connections. During Block 3 we are very excited to introduce new opportunities for students to use their voices. We will have 3 vocal groups in the Secondary School which are open to all students. On Thursdays there is a Musical Theatre Group, a Staff and Student Vocal Ensemble during the second half of lunch on Fridays and a Gospel and Soul Bryant being led by our guest artist, Berkley. All groups will join together for the premier of a newly commissioned work at this year’s Arts Festival. The piece is being written by NLCS Alumni Steven Seo who is signed with Sony. This is the first time that we have commissioned a piece for the Arts Festival and it is wonderfully exciting that this is being written by an NLCS Jeju Alumni. The piece will highlight the voice and be accompanied by a number of our own musicians. It is not to be missed and we are really looking forward to highlighting the incredible vocal talent and unique musical skills of our students.” Steven Seo says “ I’m an ex-student in NLCS Jeju, who had a dream to pursue a music career and went to Berklee College of Music when I was 17, with a full-tuition scholarship, and graduated when I was 19. After working in SM Entertainment, full-time for a year, I’m now producing music as a freelancer, and got this amazing opportunity to make music with NLCS. It’s a huge honour to work with you, and I hope we can make wonderful art together!” You can see Guest Artist, Berkely on Tik Tok
