A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju Summer Term has begun brightly with beautiful weather and both students and staff being in good form, rested but raring to go for an action packed final term of this academic year. We are delighted that many COVID-19 precautionary measures and restrictions have been lifted which means that we can move forward with some measures such as RATs and and vaccination checks in place to widen participation: • More school based activities and events which parents and friends of NLCS Jeju may attend such as the Valedictory • Opportunities for parents to attend information sessions in person and to meet with faculty as well as us being able to attend similar information sessions for our parents on the mainland • More school visits and trips will be able to take place to enrich the curriculum • Community based opportunities in School will be more possible so that we can celebrate House for example. • The Arts Festival at the end of the term will be able to take place in its entirety. The term has begun with the internal annual examinations for years 7-10 and 12 and will be closely followed by the IGCSEs and IB Diploma examinations. We wish all students the best of luck in these examinations which we hope will reflect their academic talents and hard work. Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

FOUNDER’S DAY Founder’s Day is a very special date in the NLCS calendar. It is an opportunity for all four NLCS Schools to join together - to give thanks, to reflect and to celebrate our shared history. It is an occasion to honour our founder, Frances Mary Buss, who founded North London Collegiate School in London in 1850. As well as Ms. Buss, we also give thanks to her successors and others who were instrumental in shaping NLCS. Their vision, determination and legacy are apparent in everything we do at NLCS Jeju. The day was marked with the Principal’s address, Daffodil Procession, student recitals, the School Song, Prayers of Commemoration of the Founders and Benefactors, The Lord’s Prayer and shared messages of support from our sister schools as well as a Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Prayer of Rededication read by Ms. Helen Stone, Chair - NLCS Governing Body.
This Founder’s Day was particularly poignant and allowed us to show our appreciation for one of NLCS Jeju’s own founding members, Mr. Toby Waterson, Vice Principal, who will be leaving NLCS Jeju at the end of this academic year. Mr. Waterson has been an integral part of NLCS Jeju since 2011. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make this day special and memorable for all. You can watch our Senior School Ceremony here and our Junior School Ceremony here.

VIRTUAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD Congratulations to a team of NLCS Jeju students who came third in the Virtual Chemistry Inter-School International Olympiad, held at the end of March. A closely fought competition which saw five teams answer multiple choice questions, across four challenging rounds, on a range of topics, including: Stoichiometry, rates of chemical reactions, Organic Chemistry, Electrolysis and Redox processes. Thank you to Mr. Mahesh Warrier and Dr. Henry Liu from our Chemistry department for their arrangements and support of this enjoyable and valuable experience!
PSYCHOLOGY CREATIVE WRITING
How reliable are people’s memories in the context of eye witness testimonies? That is the question posed to our IBDP Psychology students who are studying reconstructive memory. Our students were presented with a scenario and tasked with writing a creative ending to the story “NLCS Jeju Crime Drama” and applying what they have learnt about the reliability of memory. Thank you to Ms. Darija Minic who shared two of our student’s endings. Read Jessica and Una’s work below and why not try to write your own creative piece. BEHIND THE SCENES SONITAS MEDIA TEAM Numerous events take place throughout the year, and there are many students who assist these events behind the scenes. Junho, who has worked for the Sonitas media team for a while, shared his thoughts and looked back on past events. We appreciate all his efforts!

“It has already been three years since I started taking photos and videos at school events as a member of the Sonitas media team. It was hard and difficult at first to shoot photos with a heavy camera, but after editing the photos, the way I think about cameras has changed. While editing photos, I realise that memories that could be forgotten by someone could last as a photo that I took and presenting to them became more charming as the time passed. Nowadays for me, photography means a lot to me that I can record someone’s moment and present them with memories and therefore, recording my daily life and memories with pictures is now a part of me. As I became a graduating class of this year, I formed an NLCS Media team and we participated in Unplugged 2022 at NLCS on March 26th and I sang on the stage and took pictures and videos. I was depressed to think it was the last time for me to stand on the stage and take photos, but I am happy to convey my filming skills, editing methods and the way of thinking of photography in the last few years to my Media team members. In the upcoming ARTS WEEK 2022, we will work hard to make sure that the NLCS Media team presents beautiful memories of school students.”

JUNIOR SCHOOL CASUAL CLOTHES DAY A record breaking donation of 3,028,400 KRW was raised by our Junior School Students in March. An impressive 2,799,900 KRW was raised by students on our Casual Clothes Day, with the additional 228,500 KRW from the School Garage Sale. Thank you to the Cultural Awareness Committee and the Social Service Ambassadors who worked hard together as a team to plan and run various activities with the focus on world peace and to Ms. Viv Brooks and the Eco Committee who organise the Garage Sale. Ms. Liz Sukyung Kim explained that the funds were used to help residents who are affected by wildfire damage in Gyeonsangbuk-do and Gangwon-do and a donation was also made to both ChildFund (1,514,200 KRW) and UN Crisis Relief Ukraine (USD 1,220). Ms. Kim thanked both staff and students who participated and showed their support with special thanks given to Ms. Brooks.
JUNIOR SCHOOL WORLD PEACE AND NON-VIOLENCE Our Junior School Students arranged a special day to encourage world peace and to show their support to the people of Ukraine. Inspired by the Senior Schools recent work on ‘The War between Ukraine and Russia’, our Junior School Cultural Awareness Committee and Social Service Ambassadors designated 25 March as a day for reflection on world peace and non-violence. A week of activities included participating in assemblies, tutor time, art projects, group singing and donations, with the aim of providing opportunities for our students to consider the true meaning of ‘peace’ and think about how this can be applied in the school, the local area and the world we live in. Inspired by an article about a violinist who played the violin for those gathered in bomb shelters in Ukraine, that was shared by Ms. Ruth Baker, our Year 3 students rehearsed and performed ‘Someone is Praying for You’. Listen to their heartfelt performance.
UPCYCLE PROJECT During the Easter Holidays NLCS Jeju received a wonderful and generous donation of furniture and decorative items. They were recently used at a global luxury brand event collaborating with a French artist, Charlotte Gastaut. This donation was accomplished according to the brand’s CSR policy and it was made by Seoha Han’s parents who run the agent company of planning upcycling resources.
You may have already seen the items in the PAC lobby, which will soon be rehomed and reused around the School. The donation and its upcycling purpose is in line with NLCS Jeju’s own environmental activity and we are delighted to be recipients and give new life to these items. Thank you to Mr. Han and Ms. Cheong for the arrangement of the kind donation and to Seoha for her inspiring article on Zero Waste, read here.
ART IN SWING We introduced the Art In Swing project in the March newsletter. For those who are interested in supporting them, here is their online concert video and account information for donation.
