PRINCIPAL’S LETTER
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju
In all communities there are highs and lows; there are moments and events to celebrate and those of which cause sadness and grief. In all communities it is important that we come together and provide support and understanding for the feelings of each other. Thus it has been at NLCS Jeju over the last couple of weeks.
I thank our community who have responded and supported each other on the passing of our respected and dear colleague Izabella Sloczynska, the Director of the University Guidance department. We have received condolences and offers of support , including for her family from all over the world, from alumni of NLCS Jeju, previous colleagues who worked with her here and from schools she worked with earlier in her long career. It is very obvious that she was highly respected, loved and valued by so many people. We will all miss Iza.
Our students have also had wonderful experiences such as outdoor education, residential trips, a visit to Singapore, and many more. This has helped them to join together as a community and to learn to respect and care for the feelings of each other. It is noticeable that these benefits alongside independence and resilience are traits and characteristics which are developed among our boarders are more adept at and so and so it helps out day students to learn and adapt. Our students in Year 13 have also completed the IBDP exams and are preparing for their valedictory and ball.
Students also have to learn to make reasoned and sensible decisions and for some students recently it has been obvious that their unrestricted access to social media and the internet has resulted in very poor choices which has impacted on their peers. I urge all parents to monitor and restrict usage of all devices and to work with your children on their responsible usage and support the school in this. As a school we are very happy to assist parents with guidance and support with parental controls and the wider use of IT and social media.
We hope that everyone has a lovely half term pause as we celebrate a long weekend.
Lynne Oldfield PrincipalREMEMBERING IZA
The community continues to grieve the loss of our friend, colleague and teacher, Iza Sloczynska, who sadly passed away on Friday 17 May. As Iza was loved and respected by many, there are a number of ways in which you can pay your respects and support her husband and children at this sad time.
Book of Condolences
There are two books, one in the Parent Hub and one in the Senior School Library for all community members to write a message.
Financial Support for Iza’s Family
Those who wish to support Iza’s family at this sad time, by lessening the burden of the various expenses the family are and will incur to return Iza to her home country and arrange the funeral she deserves can donate here:
• NH Bank - 301-01-48-6552-71
• Reference - ‘Iza’
Why this money is important
As Iza’s stay in hospital was quite long, there was a period of approximately two months where she was not entitled to receive a salary, though the insurance covers some of the medical expenses it does not cover flights to and from Seoul for treatment, hotel stays when receiving treatment, the fee for the care assistant who supported Iza during her time in hospital, a hotel for her husband when she was in hospital, family members travelling to Jeju since her passing or funeral costs in Poland.
Please note that there is no obligation to donate at all, this is an optional donation. Thank you to everyone who has kindly donated so far, every amount will help!
Memorial
Iza’s funeral will take place in Poland, however, a Catholic Mass will be held in Jeju, which you are all welcome to attend (students will have the opportunity to remember Iza during assembly). Though a Catholic Mass, those of other or no faiths are more than welcome to attend.
Date: Saturday 25 May 2024
Time: 2pm
Location: Church of St. Isidore
Iza’s husband has explained there is no formal dress code and people should wear whatever they are comfortable in for the service.
Again, we remind you all to talk to and support each other and encourage our students and staff to reach out to our Emotional Guidance Counsellors if needed.

NLCSMUN
“We have had a fantastic year in NLCSMUN but we thought we would finish it with a series of firsts last weekend. Students and advisers (Ms. Alice Bate, Mr Fred Bate, Ms. Joan Park) came together to organise our first ever Model United Nations conference. We discussed and debated as representatives of nations around the world on the issue of gender equality, territorial disputes and the crisis in the Nagorno-Karabakh. This was also the first time that we have ever had a committee devoted to replicate the work of the International Court of Justice which tried to resolve the dispute between ethnic Armenians and the Azerbaijan military.
Other News
Most importantly it was a first for many students who had their chance to attend a conference as delegates, chairs, attorneys and judges. In representing their countries, students performed admirably drafting resolutions, making amendments and debating on how to make the world a better place” - Mr. David Moore
Thanks also to the former Secretary General - Seongjoon (Steven) Yang who returned to address the group.

CAS TRIP TO MALAYSIA
As part of their CAS projects, a group of Year 12 students took part in a trip to Malaysia. The main focus of the trip was to learn about the important issues affecting these areas, such as climate change, pollution, and unregulated marine farming. The students braved the heat to work alongside local communities to plant Mangroves, which are vital in preventing further decline, and in restoring the ecosystems of the region.
We are all excited to share our knowledge with the rest of the school and in particular the current Y11’s who will be participating in the CAS programme next year.” - Mr. Robert McLaughlin (History and TOK Teacher).

OLD NORTH LONDONERS ARE BACK IN TOWN!
This week we had a few wonderful alumni students return to NLCS Jeju.
Seunghoon Lee - Class of 2020
Seojung (Jeslyn) Park- Class of 2023
Hoon and Jeslyn delivered an assembly to Y12 students about what it is really like to be a university student at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Toronto. There were many take-aways for the students to reflect upon in preparation for their future. Some of which are:
1) Consider not just the university but the city- does the weather agree with you? Is it a city you will feel comfortable living in?
2) You will be overwhelmed by different cultures, and a diverse student body, so start getting used to meeting people outside your comfort zone.
During Y12 Tutor Time over the last two weeks, we have been looking at Risk-taking as an IB Learner Profile, and we recommend that students take on a part-time summer job even for at least a week to get some experience that will give them some positive life skills.
FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM
College can be very different from what you think of. Like I did. That can be weather, environment, people, culture or anything that is surrounding you, not only academics. And you are not the only one who will get lost. Transition between high school and college will be one of the biggest changes in your life, so don’t be afraid to face difficulties and just trust yourself, accept it is just a process. Getting lost on your way will be one of the biggest lessons. Be an insightful person. To widen your insight, don’t be afraid to meet new people, break your limitations and accept challenges! -
JeslynHoon promoted BBB (Business Black Box) to younger students along with other Korean students from University of Pennsylvania who gave presentations during break and lunch time. Jeslyn is volunteering in the History department until the end of the academic year. They both recognised how much NLCS Jeju has played a crucial part in their success, and wanted to give back to the community!
Jeein (Bunny) Seol- Class of 2022
Bunny, who is studying at UCL London came for a visit on Tuesday 21 May. She told Mr McKeogh about her Geography degree, and they discussed ideas for her final year dissertation which she is planning to work on this summer. Bunny also made Dr Karamalla smile by reassuring him that she is still taking French lessons at UCL. Having been her teacher from Year 8 to Year 11, he was aux anges (over the moon) to hear this!

Q&A SESSION WITH BIG 8
Our Big 8 (minus two who are on a school trip) gave the main address in today’s KS3 assembly and took the opportunity to introduce themselves to their younger peers. As expected from them, they were remarkable role models, showing themselves to be endearing and approachable, and ready to listen to and answer a variety of students’ questions.
