Pop-Up Message from 2013 Concert line-up Studios @ the President behalf of the Board of Mid-State Fair OnDirectors and the staff,

Please join us for a fabulous night of fun as we crown the 2013 Miss CMSF. The pageant will take place at the Budweiser Frontier Stage Tuesday, July 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission and parking are FREE. See you then!

I would like to welcome you to the 2013 California Mid-State Fair. For 67 years, our Fair has brought together the citizens of John Peschong San Luis Obispo County to enjoy America’s western heritage, rooted in family values, fellowship, fair competition and community, and this year, we want you to “Start Spreading the News” at the California Mid State Fair. The first county fair in America dates back more than 200 years and county fairs have long been a place where communities gather to enjoy their rural and agricultural heritage. Since its debut in 1946, the California Mid-State Fair — first known, as the San Luis Obispo County Fair, has been the place where ordinary citizens are recognized and awarded for their extraordinary achievements. For generations of families, the California Mid-State Fair is a tradition — like birthdays or holidays — marked on the calendar with eager anticipation each year. The California MidState Fair is not only a great time, but also a great learning opportunity for our children and grandchildren. While the fair has changed over the years, it still strives to

in the news Heritage Foundation Over a decade ago, the California Mid-State Fair Heritage Foundation began based around the core philosophy that “if you build it, they will come”. These words could not have proved to hold more truth and as a result of the Heritage Foundations efforts, the fair has consistently flourished and thrived. The Heritage Foundation, a non-profit public benefit corporation 501(c)(3), has been hugely instrumental in the success of the 16th District Agricultural Association. The community’s overwhelming and appreciated response shines through in the countless enhancements that have been made to the facility since 1999. Visitors can take great pride in the notable amount of capital investment made within the facility, most notably the Equestrian Center, Livestock Pavilion, Heritage Building, Section 8 Grand-

stand, Commercial Building 3, Mission Square area, commercial kitchen and demonstration kitchen (adjoining Commercial Building 2), and many other smaller projects completed over the years. The Heritage Foundation, now boasting over 200 memberships, has never veered from their mission to: preserve and enrich the heritage of the 16th District Agricultural Association and showcase agricultural industries to the community; offer support to the 4-H and FFA projects and create agricultural education opportunities; maintain a standard of excellence in the facilities and create capital improvement opportunities; and to serve as an arm of the California Mid-State Fair that can accept charitable donations. If you would like further information on joining the California Mid-State Fair Heritage Foundation, please feel free to call (805) 238-3745, or visit us online at: www.thecmsfheritagefoundation. org. On behalf of the California Mid-State Fair, we extend a huge “THANK YOU” to our Heritage Foundation for all that they do!!!

Message from the President Continued from page 1 maintain the same hometown values that contributed to its early popularity. Our traditions have been passed down from our grandparents, who share the same skills and memories as their grandkids do today. From the arts and crafts exhibits to the 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock Auction, from the County Rodeo to the carnival to corndogs, there has been and always will be something for everyone, young and old.

We are very thankful to our many amazing volunteers, corporate sponsors and to the Heritage Foundation, for their year-round commitment in keeping the California Mid-State Fair the very best fair in the state, and in the nation. We look forward to seeing you at the California Mid-State Fair!

Hall of Fame 2013 inductees

The California Mid-State Fair Hall of Fame was created in 2003 as a way to bridge the past with the present in recognizing individuals who have continually shown dedication, loyalty, and commitment to the Fair. Each induction is commemorated with a bronze sculpture created by local artist Les Brown, and their names are listed by year on bronze plaques located at the Main Entrance Gate of the Paso Robles Event Center. JoAnn Overbey

JoAnn Overbey has been a 4-H Community Club Leader for over 40 years. She currently leads the Canyon Country 4-H group. At the Fair she heads up the Clean Stall Award Program as well as the 4-H Dog Project and Dog Show. Overbey also serves on the County 4-H Council and is a representative on the Jr. Livestock Committee.

Evelyn Rockwell

For over 35 years, Evelyn Rockwell has been a volunteer Community Leader. She is currently the Cerro Alto 4-H Club Leader and has helped close to 200 members join. Rockwell sponsors belt buckles for the Pee Wee Showmanship classes held on the last Sunday of the fair.

Jerry Boxer

Jerry Boxer was appointed by the Governor in 2002 to serve on the 16th District Agricultural Association Board for a fouryear term. During his tenure, Boxer was extremely instrumental when it came to the fiscal growth of the Fair. He has been very active in the local community, acting as an Ambassador at Cuesta College and being heavily involved with the Paso Robles Masonic Lodge.

Gordon Davis

Gordon Davis is a Cal Poly graduate who went on to produce the Fair’s professional rodeo for eight years, from 19511959. He was a very strong supporter of the Fair’s Jr. Livestock Auction as well as a large contributor to the Cal Poly Rodeo Boosters.

In 1994 Davis was inducted to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Cotton and Karin Rosser

Cotton and Karin Rosser formed Flying U Rodeo Company in 1959. Cotton, once a competitive member on the Cal Poly Rodeo team switched roles from contestant to a rodeo producer. The couple is now known throughout the nation for their rodeo productions and specialty acts. Both Cotton and Karin have given a lifetime of support and dedication to the agriculture industry.

Blue Ribbon Award Winners Al De Rose is a Cal Poly graduate and long time Agricultural Science teacher at Atascadero High School. De Rose has volunteered countless hours at the California Mid-State Fair for over 40 years. Since retirement, De Rose serves on the National FFA Board and is currently the Director of The National Livestock Judging Contest Committee. Ray Craig started working for Southern Pacific Railroad in 1959 and retired 27 years later. He went on to work 15 more years for Amtrak, dedicating 42 years of work to the Railroad. Craig currently teaches engineers nation wide how to operate a locomotive by remote control. No matter his job, he always dedicates time to the Fair every year in an effort to give back to the local community. Jeremy Camp’s eighth recorded studio album Reckless needs a warning sign: NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, because it just might inspire listeners to surrender everything, even what they never thought they could give up. This happened to Camp about a year ago when he felt God ask him, “Are you willing to surrender everything?” For him, “everything” was music. Something he has been quite successful at for the past decade, with 32 No. 1 radio hits, a Grammy nomination and five Dove Awards. Even with this success, Camp says God brought him to a place where he could, if the day ever came, surrender music. “Not that it wouldn’t be a challenge,” says Camp, “but I wouldn’t be devastated because this is not my life. Sudsy’s Barn Sudsy’s Barn is a delightful and interactive hand washing station like none you’ve ever seen! Instead of water faucets, large 3-dimensional talking farm animals administer water to patrons (think goats pouring watering cans and alpacas playfully spitting). Instead of sinks there are troughs, and hand sanitizer is dispensed by mounted, cartoon-like beehives. This attraction is informative, hygiene-promoting, and an insane amount of fun!

2013 Merrill Award Recipient

The California Mid-State Fair was one of the winners of the prestigious Merrill Award in 2012, honored for its involvement in the Central Coast Wine Competition. The Central Coast Wine Competition has flourished thanks to the collaborative partnership of the California MidState Fair, Grand National Rodeo, Monterey County Fair, San Benito County Fair, Santa Barbara County Fair, and the Ventura County Fair. CMSF CEO Vivian Robertson said, “I am grateful to have staff member Jacky Eshelby to be the core leader of the project. Jacky has a vast knowledge of the wine industry, and really, this has been

her program from the start. The networking with the other fairs within our Central Coast Area was a natural fitand has allowed all of our competitions to be jointly successful.” The Competition now boasts a showcase of 700 of the finest wines produced on the Central Coast and is a huge source of pride for the involved fairs. The Merrill Award, named after the Western Fairs Association founder Louis F. Merrill, is given in recognition of outstanding fair programs within the fair industry.
