ecenty I had a chance to meet and talk with Savannah Piña of Thistles & Thorns Floristry in Paso Robles. Piña has been a floral designer for more than 10 years and recently moved back to the area. She has worked with other florist shops and other businesses in the area, including some businesses in Northern California. Since moving back she has done a lot of collaboration with her sister-in-law, Holley Piña of Holley Elizabeth Photography. After chatting about how awesome it was to see a lot of folks she knew who were creative and were able to set up their own entrepreneurial business in the North County, we got talking about the creative brides in the area and how a lot of them are coming in with unique details and plans as well as different color combinations. Pinterest also came up, the love / hate relationship. People come in with these amazing boards and it is a challenge to recreate the images with a limited budget. Changes in the market can also happen any time due to distribution or
disasters. Just a few cold days can make the flowers you wanted unavailable. Piña’s advice for brides and grooms is to be confident in the floral designer you choose and be flexible. “Pick good vendors, that you are confident in and trust they will make it a way more relaxing for you and your vendor, she said. “ You stress, we stress.” We talked about seeing a lot more natural elements recently. How grasses, wheat and different kinds of greens are making their way into centerpieces and bouquets. Even dried materials, such as protea, thistles and greens are being incorporated to give you a lot

of texture and color as well as being cost effective and wilt proof. A lot of Piña’s designs are inspired by the local landscape. She likes to travel back roads to get inspiration. She told me how she was inspired by a dark burgundy weed the other day and she harvested it. Her bouquet designs are so popular that a bride is even getting a tattoo of her wedding day bouquet. Her designs are inspired by the area and she forages for many of her materials and designs. Piña says it’s “by no means a new thing. It’s very green and it keeps things local and cost down.” Piña likes to forage materials such as greens and textures, never the main blooms, and she encourages brides who she works with to harvest from trees or bushes that they like. She also likes incorporating greens from wedding venues to create a cohesive feeling and compliment the blooms she does bring. We spoke about trends for fall and her advice was, “Any color can be done in any season, add other elements and with the right designer they can create the right palette to make any design work for that season. Enjoy the process.” You can contact Savannah Piña of Thistles & Thorns at (805) 286-1796.

Simply Sweet
Talking Cakes with Autumn Qui of Sweet Autumn Bakery Liz Enriquez-Phillips of NC Wedding Guide
W
hile helping out the North County Wedding Expo team round out the show with quality vendors, I came across Sweet Autumn Bakery’s site featuring their beautiful cakes. I was blown away by the level of detail in the creations, especially the succulent and cacti cake. I knew I had to meet the baker behind these cakes. I was thrilled to find out she was based in Atascadero and that she would be able to meet with me. Her name is Autumn Qui. She is orginally from China, but in 2009
she moved to the United States and in 2016 to Atascadero when her husband accepted a teaching position at Cal Poly. Qui originally came from the world of finance where she was a CPA at a firm. Qui started to bake to enjoy her quiet time and through baking she started to connect with people and give cakes to her neighbors. Her baking career took off after she made a cake for a friend who posted it on social media. Qui realized that a lot of people really liked her cakes. “Whenever I have a chance I will bring a cake,” she said. “I just love sharing the beautiful things, tasty things with people.”
17
Qui is a very passionate about cakes and cookies. “This cake I create, only I can create this cake and not anyone else.” She is such an amazing artist— she is a sculptor and her medium is buttercream and icing. Qui focuses on the consistency and density of the materials she uses. “The things come out of your heart, come out of love is always truly the most beautiful things for me.”she said. Qui likes to keep her orders small so she can focus on each one and concentrate on the design. Qui can copy anything for you, but what she really likes is to create a unique one-of-a-kind design for you. Hearing her talk about her designs creates a vision of couture cakes. She is a perfectionist. She
18
Photos by Autumn Qui
takes her craft seriously. The cakes represent her art, but Qui said they also express what is in her heart, and that is something that could never be produced en masse. Not only are Qui’s cakes beautiful, but they are delicious. “I only use the best, best ingredients that I can find. ...I know this butter is the best. I will use the best butter.” “I will ask people, ‘Do you like really sweet?’ It’s still tasty.” However she will recommend to go simply sweet, “If it’s too sweet it will cover the flavor, overwhelm the
butter, the chocolate, the fruit... especially if you use quality ingredients.” Qui spends a lot of time developing her own recipes. She’s combined the flavors of the East with the flavors of the West. She likes using butter because it’s tastes better and its healthier. If you ask for an almond cake, she will ask if you want a cake made with almond extract, or a real almond cake made with almond milk and almond flour. She not only wants your cake to look good…. she wants it to taste good. You can contact Autumn Qui of Sweet Autumn Bakery at (530) 680-3916.

An Interview with Jaime Lewis of Bow & Arrow
Liz Enriquez-Phillips of NC Wedding Guide
Brandi Lopez Photography
I
had the pleasure of interviewing Jaime Lewis of Bow & Arrow about her calligraphy and how the handwritten touches are important. “Those handwritten touches make a big difference. It also makes your guest feel extra important as well...
35
That’s what makes events really memorable in my opinion, is when the guests feel like it was created just for them.” said Lewis. We talked about how we are noticing a general trend of people making their wedding more of an experience. How they are scaling back in the number of guests, but instead creating rich opportunities to make their wedding day memorable. One way people are doing that is by creating a visual landscape with the use of new materials such as agates and glass. “Paper is timeless but there are other options out there too,” Lewis said. “Writing on shells, or clear acrlyic. I did a really cool menu on an acrylic piece once and it just adds an extra dimension. Agate slices or gemstones, and leather is a fun material to work with and there are so many options.” When I asked Lewis what makes her stand out and why couples should hire her she said, “I really spend a lot of time getting to know the couple that I’m working with. I want them to feel the day is theirs. It’s not just another event or just another wedding that they can download. I really want to let the couple’s personalities shine through and I think that really stands out in the work that I do.” You can contact Jamie Lewis of Bow & Arrow at (805) 534-3018.
