Wedding Color Trends for 2017 Pantone’s Greenery
6
Liz Enriquez-Phillips of NC Wedding Expo Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017 is Greenery. This neutral color helps to promote healing in an otherwise tumultuous time. Pantone tends to pick out a hue in relation to what people are focusing on and what is reflected in today’s cultural and political climates. This hue is supposed to be refreshing, to renew and restore.
“It is satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize,” said Pantone Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman. “Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose. This is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature. Every spring we enter a new cycle and new shoots come from the ground. It is something life-affirming to look forward to.” What’s perfect is that this year’s color is adaptable and bright and suited to
7
Color of the year

many seasons but it is ideal for a spring wedding. It’s also highly versatile for summer, fall and winter and can be used in all sorts of applications and budgets. From floral arrangements where delicate springs can be used to more lavish displays of garlands and/ or more expensive buds such as spider mums and hydrogenous or orchids in this bright lime green tone. For receptions, this tone can be used in table runners, place settings or menu cards. Imagine the lush silks draping a hall or a tent for a summer wedding. Greenery can also be used as a fun color for brides with shoes or a sash. Even a green-hued stone can compliment her look. Gentleman would look dashing as this tone works with a lot of skin tones. It can be used as the color for the ties, sash and accent for the boutonnieres with Bells of Ireland. It would also look smashing for the girls’ bright green dresses. The new color also pairs lovely with last year’s colors of Rose and Serenity for a softer spring wedding. You can also tend to use the lush greenscape of certain venues like the Groves on 41 to be the backdrop for your ceremony or the hills of the Portola Inn or even just your backyard.

Far West Ranch - Templeton Sam & Jacob
Real Life Local Wedding Sam and Jacob met Michelle at the North County Wedding Expo last February while she was searching for a photographer to capture their backyard wedding on June 18. Sam grew up on a family ranch in Templeton and knew she wanted to get married there surrounded by her family and friends. The couple enlisted the help of their family — Sam is the youngest of six children — and was able to do nearly everything themselves, making sure it was a night they would all remember.

Music mistakes to avoid
Music
Mistakes to Avoid
Photo
Metro Services
Wedding guests are usually anxious to head to the reception, where they can let loose and party. Music is an essential component of a lively and fun wedding reception, and there are some musical miscues couples should look to avoid to ensure the music is not memorable for all the wrong reasons. • Blocks of silence: Nothing makes time seem interminable more than silence. Always
26
have a constant flow of music to avoid awkward silences. This includes the time guests are waiting prior to the ceremony as well as when they’re entering the cocktail hour. Music will help everyone feel comfortable, and it creates a pleasing atmosphere, so make sure music plays throughout the festivities. • Second-guessing a professional: In an effort to curb costs, some couples provide their own playlists via an mp3 player or a streaming service
Photo
Luke & Liz Phillips Photography
for the music. This is often a mistake. Hiring a professional means you will not have to worry about managing music on top of your many other wedding day responsibilities. A band or deejay usually also serves as the emcee for the event, announcing key moments of the reception as well as getting guests up on the dance floor. • Playing only one type of music: Playing too many songs from one genre of music will alienate some of the
guests who simply are not interested in that type of music. Professional deejays or performers know how to offer a great mix that will appeal to the masses, and they are often well worth the cost. Try to span different decades and genres to keep as many of your guests on the dance floor as possible. • Failure to make a song list: Some songs you may feel are essential to the wedding and others may be on a do-not-play list and are
27
associated with negative memories. Band leaders and deejays are not mind readers. Give your band leader or deejay ample time to review your requests so that he or she has time to find a song that may not be in his or her collection. • Dancing to long songs: Pay attention to a song’s length, and choose spotlight dance songs wisely. Remember that guests will be watching you dance with parents or each other, and a five-minute song can seem neverending while others are waiting around. Avoid very long
Photo
28
songs, as the mix of music should be upbeat. The wedding isn’t the time to play “American Pie” by Don McClean, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” or Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” • Inappropriate lyrics and volume: Keep the music at an acceptable volume, and avoid songs with suggestive language or curse words that are inappropriate in a family setting. Music is a key element of any good party, including a wedding reception, and it’s essential that couples take steps to avoid any musical miscues.

Professional makeup artists Metro Services
Luke & Liz Phillips Photography
Hiring a professional to do your wedding day makeup can help guarantee a flawless face.
30
Have you ever had your makeup professionally applied? Apart from a trial application at a department store makeup counter, many women likely have no experience with professional makeup artists. While one may not hire a makeup artist for everyday events, a wedding is an occasion that often warrants the expertise of a professional. Many brides-to-be and their attendants book the services of a hairstylist to achieve beautiful wedding day hair but may not find it necessary to enlist the services of a makeup artist, figuring they can apply makeup effectively enough. But a makeup artist has a wealth of information in makeup application, as well as knowledge of what looks best under the lights and flashes of a camera. For those spending several thousand dollars on professional photography, an investment in a makeup artist can help ensure the faces smiling back from the photos look their best.
can add a lot to weddings Hiring a professional who understands how makeup reads in a photograph and how it looks in everyday light can help any bride-tobe put her best face forward. It also takes away some of the stress of readying for the wedding day. Many do-it-yourself brides do not use the right products and can end up looking washed out in photographs. Brides, especially those who typically do not wear a lot of makeup, may not know how much to apply, resulting in a lackluster finished product. Here’s why the makeup artist can prove invaluable. * He or she can pinpoint your best features and play them up. As an unbiased observer, the makeup artist will not see your flaws but rather will look at your best assets. * A makeup artist knows that the bride wants to see herself and not the makeup. He or she is creating the best version of the bride. * Makeup artists use tricks of the trade to enhance or camouflage certain features. They have an intimate knowledge of highlighting and shading they are capable of, through applying makeup, sculpting the face. * A professional will know the products available and be familiar with which formulations work best on all types of skin. If you have oily or dry skin, they can work to minimize any appearances of flaws. Also, a makeup artist will have many products and tools at the ready, reducing your need to shop prior to your wedding for all of the makeup essentials. * You get a trial run with a makeup artist. Sitting down with a professional gives you the opportunity to try on a few different looks and decide on which you prefer. Do-it-yourself brides sometimes leave makeup decisions to the last minute and really do not have a game plan the day of the wedding. * A professional can advise on the right tone. A common mistake made by do-ityourselfers is choosing the wrong shade of foundation. Brides may end up looking like a
pasty vampire or someone who has spent too much time in the sun. A makeup artist can help find the right shade and blend it in so there are no apparent lines from the face to the neck and decolletage. * A makeup artist can get those tricky false lashes to look natural. Lush, full lashes really get eyes noticed, but many women are unsure of just how to apply false lashes. Lashes may be part of the makeup artist’s insider tricks, and he or she can apply them so no one knows they are not real. Hiring a makeup artist to apply your wedding day look could be a smart investment, particularly if you want to stand out and be noticed on your big day.

Naturally Fresh
Wedding Trends for 2017
Photos from EVIN Photography on Pinterest
Tamrah Michael of NC Wedding Expo I do! Now to the fun stuff…. Your wedding! Think fresh and whimsy in 2017; with a touch of sparkle and elegance. Almost like a classic Disney movie, this year’s wedding trends are full of entertainment, lawn games, greenery, with lots of natural elements and floral for days! Weddings in 2017 will have a laidback romantic vibe, inviting your guests to a venue that has a casual croquet game going on in the back lawn while the tables are decorated with natural tones of creams, whites, soft pinks and greenery are to be expected too, with pops of vibrant fushias and metallics. With all this fun happening, the temptation is to big or go home… right?! Wrong. This year, despite the flambouent accents, the overall vibe is that of casual venues with natural table settings, with a
touch of sophisticated eclectic glassware and friendly small-town charm icebreakers and attire. Natural touches such as stones with hand-written guest names on them and farm-to-table finger foods and mini cocktails garnished with a wild flower or fresh citrus from a local farmer’s market are just some of the fun to bring into your wedding planning details.
Photos from Anna K Photography on Pinterest Mini cocktails and bites garnished with fresh citrus are sure way to impress your guests.
37
While many of these catchy details and games are ideas you could easily pull off with family and friends, one crowd-pleaser that is sure to say “fun” is the ever-popular photobooth! This year in 2017, the photobooth is an interactive one that not only has fun options such as gif photos and props (both the traditional in-hand props and the virtual ones as well- think filters over your group photos) but are also social media enabled. This means Snap Chat and Live stream to your heart’s content and share with the world all the fun you’re guests are having on your special day. Say “Goodbye” to the boring group photos and the frustration of trying to fit everyone in.. and say “High-Lo!” to the other photo-trend for 2017; the areal drone group photos. Think of arranging your group into shapes (a heart with you and your sweetie in the middle) or getting angles of the venue, wedding and dancing that have never been available to us before... but this trend could get pricey!
2017 is all about being interactive with your family and friends by switiching out the traditional sit-down meals with the pick-the-meal-you-want meal with food trucks. The food trucks range from mobile gourmet food trucks to local fast-food trucks as well… the idea here is to pick the level of fun and casual you’re envisioning and run with it! Perhaps one of the most obvious trends for 2017 are the relaxed but glamorous wedding and bridesmaids dresses. Think soft and sexy with a touch of vintage and.. of course… greenery or plane ol’ green! Overall for your 2017 wedding… remember... classic Disney movie feel, with neutrals and pastels (remember the old watercolor movies… like that!) with pops of bold shades and bright color pairings that make us all want to stare and stay awhile too! After all… it’s a wedding! Let’s celebrate!

Merging finances after getting married
46
Metro Services Couples can spend months or even years planning their weddings. While planning a wedding requires lots of hard work, couples may also want to give some thought to life beyond their wedding day. One of the more important matters couples must consider is how to manage their finances once they tie the knot. Discussing money can be a tricky issue, particularly when couples have long been accustomed to handling their own accounts and being responsible for their own income and expenditures. Bringing another party into the equation can complicate matters, particularly when one spouse may not have the full picture of the other’s spending and saving habits. In fact, the financial resource Bankrate.com says some of the most common financial problems newly married couples encounter include overspending and managing debt. When deciding how to merge their finances, couples can experiment to see what works best for them. It may take some trial and error before couples find a solution that works for them, but it’s important that couples keep the lines of communication open and express a willingness to compromise with regard to managing money. The following are some additional tips for couples who want to make the transition to sharing finances go as smoothly as possible.

According to a recent poll by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, more than two-thirds of engaged couples had negative attitudes about discussing money with their soon-to-be spouses, with 5 percent saying even having the conversation would cause them to call off the wedding. If money is causing this type of issue before the wedding, delaying the conver-
sation until after tying the knot can be a big mistake. It’s better for couples to begin financial discussions and start brainstorming long-term goals and plans as soon as they get engaged. Don’t hide negative financial information from a prospective spouse. Being open and honest — even though it can be challenging — is the best way to proceed.
Deal with debt
Hiding debt is a big mistake. Discuss debt early on and come up with a way to pay it off together. The experts say, like it or not, once you’re married, your spouse’s debts become your problem. His or her credit score can impact your ability to get credit as a couple. It’s best to handle debt efficiently regardless of who is responsible for the debt.
Decide who is the money manager
One person may be better or more organized when it comes to paying bills. Whether you keep separate accounts or combine them, it is easier for one person to take the lead and manage the finances from month to month. Money can funnel into a joint account specifically established to pay bills.
Develop a joint budget
Not only do finances need to be merged, but so, too, do lifestyles. Couples must be on the same page regarding their spending habits and keep luxury or personal expenditures in check. Work out a budget and savings plan together. Managing finances is a conversation that newlyweds need to have as soon as possible.
