A: Around 160 species of birds, 60 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 90 species of mammals. Our oak woodlands define Atascadero. People also depend on the woodland for shade, for watershed protection, and for the sheer pleasure a walk through them can instill.

A: On average Atascadero receives 17 inches of rainfall a year, with most of it occurring December through March. Since 1915, AMWC has measured rainfall at the confluence of Atascadero Creek and the Salinas River. The lowest rainfall on record since 1915 is 6.84 inches in 1976, and the highest on record was 38.84 inches in 1983.

A: In 1914, 23 miles of water main, many made from redwood stave pipe, were laid out to deliver water from wooden water tanks constructed on Pine Mountain.

A: Atascadero Mutual Water Company (AMWC) is the oldest continuous-operating company in the Colony of Atascadero and was incorporated August 13, 1913, by Atascadero’s founder E.G. Lewis. Since its formation in 1913, AMWC has provided water for domestic and irrigation purposes at cost to its shareholders. AMWC is one of the largest retail mutual water companies in the state and is responsible for meeting the water requirements of more than 30,000 people.

Deciduous tree with round form 30-60 ft. tall. How many gallons can you save by adjusting sprinklers to prevent overspray and fixing irrigation leaks?

A: Adjusting sprinkler heads and fixing leaks saves 12-15 gallons each time you water. A leak about as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month!

A: When the outside temperature is freezing, there is a chance your pipes could freeze and burst. Taking the following precautions before the temperature dips below freezing could help prevent your pipes from freezing: wrap all exterior pipes with insulation, turn off any exterior water that you will not be using this winter, and drain any exterior lines you will not need to use, such as irrigation lines.
