The 2011 tournament raised $1000 for Atascadero Youth Cheerleaders
3RD ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
W
hen the long summer days grow cooler and the leaves begin to change don’t despair! With the arrival of fall comes the 3rd Annual Atascadero Police Association Charity Golf Tournament! The Atascadero Police Association began hosting the annual golf tournament September 11, 2010 as a way to give back to their community. The goal, set by the members of the Association, was to raise funds for Atascadero youth sports. Following 2010 tournament and silent auction the Atascadero Police Association was able to donate $6000.00 to the Community Services Foundation, providing sports scholarships for underprivileged youth in the community. After receiving rave reviews from participants in the 2010 tournament the Atascadero Police Association expanded the 2011 event to include the silent auction, wine tasting, and a delicious dinner. Also included in the event was a flag ceremony performed by the Marine Corps League. The ceremony ended with the American flag being given to Mr. Kirk Eipper, a local resident and survivor of the
9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Mr. Eipper, in turn, passed the flag along to the widow of a friend who was killed in the attack. After the 2011 tournament The Atascadero Police Association was able to donate $11,000.00 to Atascadero youth sports. The various donations made by the Association included $5000.00 to the Community Services Foundation for sports scholarships, $3500.00 to the Atascadero Youth Football League for the purchase of 35 new helmets, and $1000.00 to the Atascadero Youth Cheerleaders. This year the Atascadero Police Association will be hosting the tournament at Chalk Mountain Golf Course on September 8th. The Atascadero Police Association is hoping to expand the tournament once again to include entertainment along with the round of golf, silent auction, wine tasting, and dinner. Don’t miss out on this exciting event! Contact Atascadero Police Association President, Scott Pipan or Association Treasurer, Erin McGrath at 461-4924 for more information on donating or participating in the event.

ATASCADERO GROUPS WIN CALIFORNIA PARK & RECREATION SOCIETY AWARDS
T
he City of Atascadero’s Community Services Department is proud to announce that two co-sponsored community groups won awards and recognition at the California Park & Recreation Society District 8 Banquet. The North County Adaptive Recreation Bulldogs group, in cooperation with the Community Services Department, won an award in the category of “Recreation & Community Programs.” The award recognizes excellence in recreation and community services program planning that encourages recreation participation, promotes health and wellness, fosters human development, and facilitates community problem solving. In 2011, a small group of parents proposed a partnership with the City of Atascadero to create a program to offer sports and social activities for children & young adults with special needs in north San Luis Obispo County. The key success of the program is the partnership between the City of Atascadero, Cal Poly State University, local high students and the non-profit volunteer board members. The North County Adaptive Recreation Bulldogs have over 58 participants with special needs participate in their year-round, weekly sports or social activities. The fun program provides an outlet for youth and adults with special needs that have limited budgets, mobility or access. Also receiving an award, was the “Atascadero Fun Club” and Ann Fletcher. The Fun Club, also partnering with the City of Atascadero’s Community Services Department, won an award in the category of “Champion of the Community.” Awarded to individuals, agencies, community organizations, foundations, businesses, or educational institutions for outstanding public service in the support of “Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs.” Recipients are chosen based upon their significant effort to influence and improve the quality of their community through parks, recreation and community service. This award is intended for individuals who are not employed in the parks and recreation profession. Atascadero has historically lacked an active Senior Center or on-going senior activities, and resident Ann Fletcher took it upon herself to change that. Ann spearheaded a group of 50+ residents of Atascadero and

partnered with the City of Atascadero to create the Atascadero Fun Club. The Atascadero Fun Club has been in operation for only 9 months, but offers weekly Bunco, poker, horseshoes, and line dancing, as well as offering group excursions. There is a lot more on the way for Atascadero with the Fun Club- and the community has Ann Fletcher to thank! The CPRS District 8 Awards and Installation Banquet took place on Friday, March 30th in Camarillo and was attended by Brady Cherry (Community Services Department Director), Ann Fletcher, Elaine Moffett (Fun Club Board Members), Ron and Ruth Vasconcellos, Jim, Peggy and Sandy Edwards (Adaptive Recreation Bulldogs). For more information about the Adaptive Recreation Bulldogs or the Atascadero Fun Club please call Jennifer Fanning, Recreation Supervisor with the City of Atascadero’s Community Services Department at 805-470-3426 or email jfanning@atascadero.org.

FIRE DEPARTMENT FROM THE DESK OF THE
FIRE MARSHAL
T
he City of Atascadero Fire Department is embarking on a program to educate our residents on how to better prepare themselves in the event of a wildland fire. Recently, several of our personnel met with homeowners to discuss fire safety at their homes. There are four key areas I would like everyone to focus on. Those four areas are called the Access Zone, Defensible Space Zone, Build Zone and the Interior Zone. These four zones are vital to you and your homes’ survival.
Access Zone. The Access Zone is how we get to you, your street, your address and your driveway. First, if you live on a city maintained street you need to confirm that the street signs are visible and there are no low hanging trees. If you’re on a private road, make sure it’s well maintained and has enough clearance for our fire trucks to get through. That dimension is 20 feet wide and 13’-6” tall with no obstructions. Second, can we see your address? Think about a dark rainy night at 2:00 am and you need help; is your street address large enough, bright enough and in the proper location for the fire or police department to see it? Recommended size is 6 inches tall with a 1/2 inch stroke and a contrasting color or reflective material. Third, your driveway must be clear from low hanging tree branches, at a minimum height of 13 feet 6 inches and the sides, at least 12 feet wide. This will provide us a fighting chance to get to your house. Defensible Space Zone. There are three items to discuss in your defensible space zone. The first is wildland fuel reduction area. The second is non-combustible area and the third is the lean, clean & green area. Regarding the wildland fuel reduction area, your best defense in an approaching wildland fire is removing what we call “ladder” fuel. Ladder fuel starts with the easily ignited grasses, moves up into the more dense brush material and eventually climbs to the top rung of the trees. If we can eliminate the first rung of the ladder being the easily ignited grasses, we can stop the fire from progressing into the brush and the trees. The next area is called the noncombustible area. The noncombustible area is the area directly adjacent to your house that we
6 r Atascadero Magazine
would like to keep free of any and all ignitable plants or shrubs. The best items to use in this area are rock, grass or any ignition resistant plants that will not allow flying embers to catch them on fire. The last area is the lean, clean & green area. This is a 30-foot area around your home that should have sparse well-manicured vegetation or grass that is kept in a healthy, green condition. This provides a good buffer between an approaching wildland fire and your house. Build zone. The build zone addresses your house’s building materials. There is too much information to list in this section so I will just advise you to pick up one of our Living With Fire Magazines and look at all of the components within the build zone; or you can log onto : http://osfm.fire.ca.gov/strucfireengineer/pdf/bml/wuiproducts.pdf Interior zone. This zone particularly addresses the inside of your home. There is a new state law that requires all homes to now have Carbon Monoxide detectors. If you don’t have one, please purchase one for your families’ safety as soon as possible. The following are recommendations and safety tips to keep your home fire safe: r Check your smoke detectors quarterly & replace the batteries annually r If you do not have a fire extinguisher, the best recommended fire extinguisher for your home is a 2A-10BC. Most hardware stores can help you out with this purchase. r Make sure all of your wood stoves and fireplaces are cleaned and inspected annually r Never leave candles burning in your home r Have your heating system and duct work for your dryers checked regularly r And, last but not least, create a plan of escape for your home in the event of a structure fire or a wildland fire. Only grab the essential items such as important documents, family heirlooms, and family pictures. I hope this provides some basic information that will assist you in the event of a fire in our area. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Atascadero Fire Department at 461-5070.

SMOKE DETECTORS
E
veryone knows how important an alarm clock is, right? After all, virtually everyone has one in their home. But the latest estimates from the National Fire Protection Association indicate at least 10% of the homes in America do not have an operating smoke detector. Some people say...”I don’t need a smoke detector. If there is a fire in the middle of the night, I’ll smell the smoke and wake up.” WRONG! When you go to sleep your sense of smell goes to sleep with you and unless the smoke is very acrid and irritates your nostrils as you breathe, you may not wake up at all. Smoke created by fire contains a deadly gas called carbon monoxide. This deadly gas is odorless and colorless, you can’t see it, taste it or smell it. As you breathe, it puts you into a deeper sleep. It can kill you before you know it. Although we like to feel safe at home, most fatal fires occur at night when people are sleeping. Most deaths occur from inhaling smoke or poisonous gases, not from flames. A smoke detector can alert you when there is a fire, in time to save your life. HAVE WE GOT YOUR ATTENTION YET? GOOD! HERE ARE SOME ANSWERS TO COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SMOKE DETECTORS: Why smoke detectors? Why not heat detectors? Smoke and deadly gases tend to spread faster and farther than heat which is why an operating smoke detector is so important to have. More people die from the effects of smoke and deadly gases by a margin of 2 to 1. A smoke detector will automatically sound a warning when they sense smoke or other products of combustion. When people are warned early enough about a fire, they can escape before it spreads. How many smoke detectors should I have? At least one smoke detector in every bedroom and one outside in the hallway. Also you should install one detector on each level of the home if you have a second floor or basement. Where is the proper location for the smoke detectors? Generally on the ceiling at least 4 inches out from the wall. If you must install them on the wall, install them at least 4 inches down from the ceiling but no lower than 12 inches from the ceiling. Keep them high because smoke rises. Place smoke detectors at the top of each stairwell and at the end of each long hallway. Remember, do not place them any closer than 3 feet of an air supply register that might recirculate smoke resulting in a delayed alarm. Be sure to keep the detector away from fireplaces and wood stoves to avoid false alarms. How are smoke detectors powered? Some smoke detectors are powered by a 9-volt battery, some are powered by the home’s electrical system, and some are the combination of both. That is, they are wired into the home’s electrical system
FIRE DEPARTMENT and equipped with a 9-volt battery back-up. Who should install my smoke detector? If you elect to purchase smoke detectors that are to be connected to your home’s electrical system, you should have a qualified electrician install them. If you purchase those that are solely battery powered, you can install them yourself with a screwdriver and a drill, but install them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. What about maintenance? Keeping smoke detectors in good condition is easy. Change the battery (if equipped) at least once a year or sooner if the smoke detector signals a low battery. Clean the detector face and screen to remove dust. Test your smoke detector at least weekly. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. After they are installed, then what? Test them and make sure they work. Everyone in your household should be aware of what they sound like and know what to do if they hear that noise. How do I test my smoke detector? Push the test button or test them with smoke. If you test them with smoke, use a match or candle. Blow out the flame and let the smoke drift up into the smoke detector. Never test the smoke detector with a flame! What is that chirping noise? That noise, usually every 60 seconds or so, is indicative of a battery that is going dead. This signals you to change the battery as soon as possible. That signal may last for a couple of days, but once the battery is dead you will have no protection at all. How do I prevent that annoying false alarm? If you are getting false alarms, try moving your smoke detector farther from the kitchen or bathroom area and closer to the bedroom area. There are smoke detectors on the market that are specifically designed for kitchen or bathroom area use. Regular smoke detectors are too sensitive for these areas and cause annoying false alarms.

Carbon Monoxide Safety
Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. !!! CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. !!! Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height. !!! Choose a CO alarm that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory. !!! Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds. !!! Test CO alarms at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
HOME HEATING EQUIPMENT
Have fuel-burning heating equipment and chimneys inspected by a professional every year before cold weather sets in. When using a fireplace, open the flue for adequate ventilation. Never use your oven to heat your home.
!!! If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries. If the battery is low, replace it. If it still sounds, call the fire department. !!! If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel. !!! If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow. !!! During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up. !!! A generator should be used in a well-ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings. !!! Gas or charcoal grills can produce CO — only use outside.

POLICE DEPARTMENT PEACE OF MIND WHEN LEAVING YOUR KIDS ALONE
E
very parent eventually faces this decision: When can I leave my child home alone? Whether it is a quick errand to the store or working during after-school hours, parents need insure their children have the skills and maturity to handle the situation safely. Being trusted to stay home alone can be a positive experience for a child who is mature and well prepared. It can boost the child’s confidence and promote independence and responsibility. However, children face real risks when left unsupervised. Parents must evaluate those risks, as well as a child’s ability to deal with challenge.
Age and Maturity Staying home alone safely does not happen at a specific age. Children mature at different rates. This decision involves more than the child’s age. Some things to consider are as follows: r Is your child physically and mentally able to care for him or herself? r Does your child follow rules and make good decisions? r How does your child feel about being home alone? Is he or she comfortable with or fearful about the idea? Circumstances When and how a child is left home alone can make a difference
12 r Atascadero Magazine
to his or her safety and success. You may want to consider the following questions: r How long will your child be alone at one time? Is it during day, evening, or bedtime hours? r How often do you expect your child to care for him or herself? r How many children are going to be left home alone? Children who may be ready to stay home alone may not necessarily be ready to care for younger siblings. r Is your home safe and free of hazards? r How safe is your neighborhood? Safety Skills Besides age and maturity, your child needs some specific skills before being able to stay home alone safely. Most importantly, your child should know what to do and whom to contact in an emergency. r Does your family have a safety plan for emergencies? Can your child follow this plan? r Does your child know their full name, address and phone number? r Does your child know the names and contact information of other trusted adults in case of emergency? r Does your child know how to contact you at all times?
POLICE DEPARTMENT Helpful tips for Parents Once you have determined that your child is ready to stay home alone, the following may help you to prepare your child and to feel more comfortable about leaving him or her home alone: r Have a trial period. Leave your child home for a short time while staying close to home. r Role play. Act out possible situations and she how your child will react. r Establish rules. Make sure your child knows what is and is not allowed while you are gone. r Check in. Call your child while you are away to see how everything is going. Alternatively, have a trusted friend or neighbor check in
on them. r Do not overdo it. Even a mature, responsible child left home alone too often becomes at risk. Consider other options, such after school programs, community centers, youth organizations, or churches, to help keep your child busy and involved. Knowing Your Child is Ready Trust your instincts. You know your child best; you will be confident that he or she will be ready for this additional responsibility. Following these guidelines will help prepare to clear another hurdle to becoming an independent adul
FROM THE DESK OF THE POLICE CHIEF
A
s the Chief of Police of the Atascadero Police Department, I want you to know what tremendous people you have working on your behalf. The men and women of the Atascadero Police Department are exceptional. They have a strong commitment to our community. You can rest assured that you have a great police force and they will continue working to keep our community safe and to maintain our quality of life. In addition to our paid workforce, we also have a large number of volunteer employees working alongside our staff. These men and women from the community donate countless hours of service and are a large part of the reason we can provide the level of service to the community that we do. I thought I would share some of the guiding principles our department is committed to as we move forward. These principles are taken straight from the Atascadero Police Department Mission and Vision Statements. Those statements are available on the City of Atascadero Website if you would like to read them in their entirety. I have narrowed these principles down to three easy to remember words. Professionalism, Partnerships and Personal Growth You may not know much about our department. You may not have ever seen our mission or vision statements, but with those three words, you now know a whole lot about who we are, and who we are going to be as we move toward the future. Professionalism- We will be professional. We will be models for law enforcement agencies throughout the county, and throughout the state. We will serve the members of this community, with a
high regard for the dignity of those we serve. When people are at their worst, we will be at our best. When the people of our community find themselves in distress, we will work to restore balance and make them whole. We will not stoop to the level of those in our soci- Chief of Police Jerel Haley ety whose actions and motives only serve to divide and tear us down. We will maintain our personal and professional lives in such a manner, that we will be above reproach. We will remember that oath of office to which we swear ourselves when we take on the responsibility of the badge, “to be courageous and calm, to develop self-restraint; and put others before ourselves, to be honest in our personal and professional lives”. These are the things we devote ourselves to, and these are the things to which we will strive. We will not always be perfect. We are after all still human. However, I can assure you, that when we do err, we will be introspective. We will re-examine ourselves. We will fix what is wrong, we will correct our mistakes, and we will move forward. Partnerships- There are times in law enforcement, that we are a force to be reckoned with to be sure. We swoop in, finish the job, and move on to the next challenge without any outside assistance…. But reality soon sets in, and we realize that alone, we cannot accomplish
Atascadero Magazine r 13
POLICE DEPARTMENT the work that needs to be done. We must have help. We must rely upon the work of others if we are to accomplish the job to which we set ourselves. We need to partner with others in order to be effective. And so we will keep and foster our existing partnerships, and work to form new partnerships. We will partner with other city departments. We will partner with other law enforcement agencies both in the county and throughout the state. We will partner with community groups, and faith based organizations. And we will partner with individual members of our community. I can think of no better example of this partnership than the many men and women who volunteer their time and effort to assist the Atascadero Police Department. I’ve told several people, the first person I ever met at APD was a volunteer. How fitting is that? And we will find many other partners within the community (yes you residents reading this now have a job ahead of you). We will allow them (you) the opportunity to take ownership in their problems, and work alongside us in finding real solutions that go beyond the quick fix. We will be good partners, sharing the spotlight and willing to take on more than our fair share of the workload. I look forward to working with many of you in the days ahead. Personal Growth- One of the reasons I chose to pursue this position is the commitment that the City of Atascadero has shown to the training and development of their people. I will continue to endeavor to facilitate our training and to grow our abilities and expertise in the law enforcement field. It is my firm belief that as we improve our skills, our reputation as deeply committed professionals will progress at an equally exponential rate. While I do want us to be a well-rounded group, it is also my hope that we will be able to provide our officers with the training and skills that focus on their personal, individual skills; those things that give them the most enjoyment and satisfaction in their work, those things that make them great. I will never ask them to do something they can’t do, but the things they can do, I will always expect them to do at a very high level. I am also committed to the idea that this job does not define our people. As much as I want them to develop as employees and members of this department, I also want our employees to develop as individuals, as people. I will encourage them to be great mothers, fathers, husbands and wives. I want them to grow and learn. Several of our people already embrace this concept. They have recently completed their college degrees. They run triathlons. They coach local sports teams and get involved in their local churches. They donate time to worthy causes. These are the things that enable our employees to come to work
14 r Atascadero Magazine
with a refreshed mind, body and attitude. These are things that help them be the best they can be. So we are, and will be, committed to personal growth. I would like to close by asking that you allow me to add another P word to this list. At least temporarily….. I would ask that you have patience. I am just smart enough to know that there are a lot of things about Atascadero that I don’t know yet. I am committed to working hard so that, with time, I will become a leader worthy of your respect, but I also know that there will be roadblocks along the way. I will hit some bumps. I ask that during those times you allow me to gracefully pick myself back up and patiently wait for me to recover and continue on the way. Chief of Police Jerel Haley

POLICE DEPARTMENT
SAFETY MAY IS NATIONAL BIKE SAFETY MONTH Bicycle Safety The City of Atascadero is a beautiful place to live and work, but due to the unique geographical makeup, we have many areas that present hazards for bicyclists. Over the last five years the City of Atascadero has ranked in the bottom third of similarly sized cities in injury bicycle collisions. Although the Police Department and several local businesses are aware of these facts, much of the solution to the bicycle safety problem is based on the education of riders and motorists. We hope that through this article and several upcoming bicycle safety events we have planned throughout the City, we can work together to improve bicycle safety in our City. Rules of the Road California Vehicle Code(CVC) Per CVC section 39000 , a bicycle is defined as “any device upon which a person may ride, which is propelled by human power through a system of belts, chains or gears and having either two or three wheels.” And per CVC section 21200(a) “a person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle …” as defined by the CVC. In short, what that means is that anyone riding a bicycle must abide by all the same rules that a driver of a car must abide by. Furthermore, the CVC also defines several laws that pertain to only bicyclists. A quick overview of these laws has been listed below. More in-depth information can be obtained by referring to the California Vehicle Code. CVC 21201(a) states that all bicycles must have at least one working brake which can lock a wheel on the bike. (b) handlebars must be below shoulders. (c) bicycle must be of proper size to allow rider the ability to stop safely with at least one foot on the ground in
an upright position. (d) must have headlight, rear reflectors, pedal reflectors or reflectors on both sides of wheel. CVC 21202(a) when operating slower than flow of traffic bicycle must be to the right edge of roadway. CVC 21208(a) must operate in bicycle lane when bicycle lane is present CVC 21212(a) helmet required for anyone under the age of 18 CVC 21650.1 must travel in same direction as the flow of traffic CVC 27400 may not wear headphones in both ears The California Vehicle Code has many more sections pertaining to bicycle safety; however, these are the sections we see that cause the most bicycle related collisions. To further enhance bicycle safety the Atascadero Municipal Code section 4-2.1006 states that “no personal shall ride a bicycle upon or along a sidewalk, or in violation of any of the provisions of the CVC” Up-coming bicycle events Although the CVC does provide the Atascadero Police Department the tools to conduct bicycle traffic enforcement, we know that the only way to have a true reduction in bicycle related collisions is to collaborate with the citizens of our City. To build on bicycle safety awareness and to continue to educate young and old bicyclists, we are planning several bicycle safety events in the near future. Starting with San Gabriel Road School on April 21st, we assisted school staff and local businesses with a school assembly to promote bicycle safety. The event was open to students to encourage the “Safe Routes to School” and provide bicycle safety tips to the children and their parents. Mayor Pro Tem Tom O’Malley led “Bike to Bites” on May 9th to promote bicycle safety awareness and “Safe Routes to School”. This
Atascadero Magazine r 15
POLICE DEPARTMENT event was a huge success and educated the youth on the need for bicycle safety. Two Atascadero Police employees participated in the event. The San Luis Obispo Ride Share coalition has continued to support all the bicycle events in the county to promote safety. With that said, the Atascadero Police Department will be hosting a bicycle rodeo on May 26th 2012 to promote bicycle safety awareness. The event is scheduled from 1000 am to 2 pm. It will be held in the downtown area. Several local businesses have agreed to support the event, providing bicycle safety tips and making a fun environment for all. We have coordinated with a BMX stunt team company who will be putting on two demonstrations during the event. We will have prizes for children in attendance and have been working with all the local schools to ensure all kids are aware of the event. We look
forward to the rodeo which will promote bicycle safety awareness while having a good time. We thank the local businesses who have helped to make this event successful. Once again, the Atascadero Police Department would like to thank you for your participation in encouraging bicycle safety and we hope we have inspired you to think of the rules of the road, whether you are driving a car or riding a bicycle. For any further questions regarding bicycle or traffic safety please go to www.atascadero.org and follow the links to the Police Department and the Traffic Unit. Any questions can also be sent to cdavis@atascadero.org Thank you and ride safe.
TAKE EXTRA CARE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS
A
s the summer months approach it is a good time to remind ourselves to take extra care and precautions to keep yourselves and your families safe. There are a few concerns that the Atascadero Police Department wants to make our residents aware of this summer. By following a few simple safety rules we can all enjoy the best that the community has to offer without the negative effects of inattention to the hazards. As the weather warms, we need to take extra precautions for the safety and wellbeing of our children and pets. Temperatures in an enclosed vehicle can rise dramatically within minutes during warmer weather. The risks posed to both children and animals by being left in a vehicle are tremendous. Our officers will be on the lookout this summer for situations in which the safety of children or animals is endangered by being left inside an enclosed vehicle. Our message is, “Don’t do it.” *Leave your pets at home. *Take your children with you into the store. *Never use the excuse, “I’ll only be a minute.” Property crimes, including thefts and burglaries often increase during the summer months. As the days are longer we spend more time out of our homes. The criminal element in our society is no different. They use the additional daylight and reduced sense of awareness that the summer months bring to engage in their illegal activities. Many of these types of crimes are what we refer to as “crimes of opportunity”. Most are preventable. By taking a few extra safety measures you can ensure that you are not a victim. Crimes of opportunity most often occur because the victim
16 r Atascadero Magazine
doesn’t take the extra time to secure their property. A purse or electronic device left on the front seat of a vehicle can be an attractive target for would be thieves. How many times have you dashed into the store for “just a minute” leaving your vehicle unlocked? How often have you turned in for the night leaving valuable items in the car instead of bringing them into the house? Taking just a few extra moments to secure these items will decrease the likelihood that you will be a target. We must also remind our children to take extra care during the summer months. The summer months provide excellent weather for the many outdoor activities our community provides. Young people are frequent victims as a result of inattention to their belongings. Bicycles are often stolen when they are not locked correctly. Recreational equipment, backpacks and electronic devices are also targeted by would be thieves when our children fail to keep a watchful eye on their belongings. As parents we need to continually remind our children of the dangers present when they do not keep a careful watch over their things. The Atascadero Police Department also reminds you to be good neighbors. Be watchful for things that don’t look right in your neighborhood. Talk with your neighbors and know what doesn’t belong. Please remember never to try dealing with a suspicious situation on your own. Contact the Atascadero Police Department and allow us to investigate suspicious activity in a manner that keeps us all safe. By following just a few simple safety precautions, we can all enjoy a wonderful worry free summer.

he Friends of the Library (FOL), in partnership with the County of San Luis Obispo and the City of Atascadero, has purchased a building at 6555 Capistrano Avenue in the Hotel Park development across the street from City Hall. In 2011, the Friends of the Library raised $700,000 for the interior construction on the new library. The yellow slice of the pie chart represents the amount that needs to be raised in 2012, now less than $250,000. If remaining funds are raised, construction will begin late in 2012, and the new library will open in the fall of 2013, Atascadero’s centennial year. FOL invites local residents to participate in the campaign to “Open the Doors” of the new library by attending benefits and contributing directly to the campaign. Tax deductible contributions can be mailed to Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 9, Atascadero, CA 93423. More information is available on the FOL Web site www. atascaderofriendsofthelibrary.org.

Over the years %ig Daddy’s Rhythm and %lues %and has been the opening act for a wide vatriety of blues and jazz artist’s, and most recently Tom Scott, John Mayall, James Cotton, Ron Thompson and the Resistors and Corby Yates to name a few. The music of %ig Daddy’s Rhythm and %lues %and pulls all ages of blues lovers out to boogie. Young and old alike come out to party with dynamic and danceable band. The band has paid their dues working the clubs and concert circuit along the west coast of the U.S. Fans have found that %ig Daddy’s smoking versions of old favorites and band’s house rockin’ originals keep em comin back for more. Stan (the rock) Manning lays down a sharp, blistering bass foundation with Greg Money %arnes pumping as the rhythm machine. These two with their passionate style drive the band like an emotional train. The stinging guitar licks and vocals of Crackin Jack Collins lends a classic blues-jazz feel to the music of %ig Daddy’s. As the newest member of the band Tom Seacore on trombone is sexy and cool. That’s why he’s the bone man. %ig Easy Eric Stevers brings his soulful sax and educated keyboards to the mix. +e will grab a hold of your ears and never let go. Smokin Joe 3illoud (Dr. Feel Good) seasons it up with his free spirited interpretations of both standards and original compositions, with smooth and direct vocal skills, while offering up moments of madness on the %3, piano and guitar. Their separate styles blend together like a well oiled machine.
The Cinders play a very straight-forward, slightly raw version of the blues. +eaded by vocalist %rett +oover, with his naturally authentic blues style, The Cinders play music with a base in Chicago blues but never as a “museum piece”; they were raised with rock and roll and they know it. Its real blues played with the freedom to feel it differently with each performance. Guitarist Dorian Michael explains “We enjoy that the blues is a double-edge sword; its emotionally deep and we love sharing that with the audience, but it’s also music meant to shake your tail feathers to, so when people get up and dance and have a big time, well, so much the better!” Along with %rett +oover’s powerful, gritty blues vocals, Dorian Michael plays a very personal style of unvarnished blues guitar. Drummer Dean Giles, originally of %oston MA, brings a driving, slightly jazz based sophistication on drums. Dylan Johnson, bassist for the band on August 11th, and certainly the youngest of the group, pushes the band with his strong musical foundation tinged with a modern funky edge. This keeps the older guys on their toes and keeps the audience dancing.

RECREATION GUIDE
Director’s Message
Community Services Department Dear Resident, Summer and Fall are around the corner, and with them come some terrific seasonal youth sports. For parents with kids getting ready play, the new season is an exciting time. The kids are anticipating playing with their friends and having a successful season with the team. Anything is possible, as the season is full of promise. At the youth level, the game is based upon development and enjoyment (although some adults forget this.) Youth sports are a great opportunity for parents to get involved with their kids.
es was “pounding me down” with his criticism. I’m sure that the coach had no idea about the effect his coaching style had on my daughter. Nonetheless, there it was. It’s kind of sad, because she was not motivated to play, and no coach sets out to make a kid feel that way. But it happens, a lot more than we would like to think. Every coach and parent wants to see their kids improve their skills and have fun. We all need to be mindful of taking a positive approach to kids and competition. All we can really ask is that the kids do their best, and we must take care to allow them to really enjoy it.
There are many roles to play, from board member or coach, to “team mom”. The most important role you can play, however, is supportive parent. Think about your expectations for your son or daughter. Are they realistic? One third of all youth participants drop out of sports because of one of the following factors: 1) constant criticism or disapproval: 2) over competitive emphasis from adults; 3) too little playing time; 4) poor or negative communication by the coach; and 5) inappropriate rules structure for immature athletes. These things hit home with me, because I have seen them all at one time or another. Driving home from a game, I can remember one of my daughters telling me that she felt like one of her coach-
As the games and seasons go by and the kids grow older, they come closer and closer to playing that last game. It might be this year, or sometime in high school or beyond. I urge you to embrace these moments with your kids while you can. Every game is a privilege you have to sit and watch your child out there playing on the Àeld or the court. Embrace every game you have the pleasure to be there. After the game, let your child know how you enjoy being there. Share some of your positive thoughts about the game with them. It doesn’t last long, but you will have some rich and wonderful memories of this special time in their life, and yours. Brady D. Cherry, M.A.

In each class you will learn how to make a different weave. The kit you will purchase will have enough rings for an 8 chain and a pair of matching earrings, and will also include a clasp and ear wires. Costs of kits will vary according to the rings required for the individual weave we will be doing, but should be between $15 and $20.
