HOW TO GARDEN IN A drought California is in a drought and that means that we need to be careful with every drop of water that we use, particularly outdoors. Here’s a guide to how to help your landscape survive the drought.
GET EFFICIENT
introduce drip irrigation
invest in a smart controller
water less frequently, but longer and close to plant roots
redirect downspouts to capture rainwater and direct it to garden areas
PRIORITIZE YOUR LANDSCAPE 1 VEGETABLES & FRUITS GET PRIORITY They help feed your family.
2
3 THIRSTY PLANTS – LAWN, HIGH-WATERUSE & CONTAINER PLANTS These plants are the lowest on the priority list. If you have to cut back, start here.
WATER-WISE PLANTS & SHADE TREES Water-wise plants use little or no water once established. Shade trees help keep plants cool and less thirsty.
USE MULCH
There are many benefits using mulch in your landscape.
N2 H2O
RETAIN MOISTURE Less watering needed and grow healthier plants.
MODERATES TEMPERATURE Cool soil in the summer and warm soil in the winter.
K+ Mg P
DECOMPOSES NUTRIENTS Enrich soil and better soil quality.
DISCOURAGE WEEDS Keep weeds away and reduce maintenance.
CAN I PLANT?
Check with your local water agency and if you can water at least two times a week, you can plant water-wise plants and shade trees. This is not the time to install new lawn or thirsty, nonCalifornia friendly plants.
RECYCLE INDOOR WATER OUTDOORS!
Recycle water you are using indoors by capturing what otherwise might go down the drain and use it on plants.
put a bucket in your shower
use cooled cooking water
wash your fruits & veggies over a bucket
keep a pitcher next to the sink and empty water glasses in it
For more tips on reducing water use, visit saveourH2O.org!

Summer Concert Series
June 20th “An Evening of Jazz” with Captain Nasty
Captain Nasty is a 9 – piece funk band hailing from the central coast of California. They strive to create music that incorporates the improvisational and intelligent elements of Jazz with booty shaking and party pumping rhythms of African and Latin music. The band consists of drum, electric bass, electric guitar, Rhoads piano, percussion, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax and lead female vocalist. Captain Nasty originated as an instrumental jazz combo at Cuesta College in SLO, CA. The drummer, Graham Yates wanted to make a funk band based around the baritone saxophone. He added Mike Weber’s finesse on baritone saxophone as well as Anthony Donatelli’s wizardry on alto saxophone. Larry Fairfield’s shredding prowess on electric guitar and Grant Chase’s musical expertise on percussion and keyboard were added to the mix. Serendipity brought their vocalist, Shawna Marie to the mix who brings enough soul and sass to layer on top of 8 instrumentalists. Sam Franklin returned to the central coast after graduating from CSU Northridge with a bachelor in Jazz performance and brings his genius on tenor sax. Keegan Harshman, the original bass player and overall musical connoisseur joined in laying down the dirty grooves. Captain Nasty has gained a reputation of delivering a high energy, sweaty, funky, feel-great good time. It’s hard to sit still at their live performances while they bring high energy grooves and showcase the mastery over their instruments with face-melting solos, intricate harmonies, and advanced rhythmic styles.

Tickets and tables are now on sale for the 5th annual Mayors’ Winemaker Dinner which will be held at the Pavilion on the Lake in Atascadero on Friday, June 26. The gala begins at 5 p.m. with open wine sampling. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Once again, this year’s Winemaker Dinner is jointly sponsored by Atascadero Kiwanis Club and the City of Atascadero. The majority of the net proceeds (75 percent) from this fundraiser will go toward the establishment of an after-school Boys and Girls Club in Atascadero. Other proceeds from the annual dinner will go in support of the many on-going civic programs provided throughout the year by the local club. A gourmet meal will be prepared and served by Pacific Harvest Catering, 33 local winemakers will participate both during and before the event and there will be a silent and live auction to help raise money. Ticket information is available by going to the club’s website at www.atascaderokiwanis.org or at kiwanisatascadero@gmail.com. Individual tickets are $85. A table for six (plus two winemakers) is $500 and a corporate table is $1,000. Corporate sponsors will be highlighted in the live auction program.
The 20th Annual Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival, June 27th, will take place from 4 to 8 pm to take advantage of Atascadero’s warm, summer evenings. Food vendors will showcase their finest cuisine and suggest wine pairings based on the varietals available at the event. Visitors will enjoy an array of juried fine art created by local artists as well as the inviting lakeside environment. All proceeds benefit the Charles Paddock Zoo and other projects supporting the community of Atascadero. Unlimited tasting tickets are just $50 in advance, $55 at the door. Food sold separately. More information and tickets are available online at www.atascaderowinefestival. com or at the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce Office 805-4662044.

Summer Concert Series
July 11th The Cinders Sponsored by Starna Cells, Inc. The Cinders play a very straight-forward, slightly raw version of the blues. Headed by vocalist Brett Hoover, with his naturally authentic blues style, The Cinders play music with a base in Chicago blues but never as a “museum piece”; they were raised with rock and roll and they know it. Its real blues played with the freedom to feel it differently with each performance. Guitarist Dorian Michael explains “We enjoy that the blues is a double-edge sword; its emotionally deep and we love sharing that with the audience, but it’s also music meant to shake your tail feathers to, so when people get up and dance and have a big time, well, so much the better!” Along with Brett Hoover’s powerful, gritty blues vocals, Dorian Michael plays a very personal style of unvarnished blues guitar. Drummer Dean Giles, originally of Boston MA, brings a driving, slightly jazz based sophistication on drums. Dylan Johnson, bassist for the band on August 14th, and certainly the youngest of the group, pushes the band with his strong musical foundation tinged with a modern funky edge. This keeps the older guys on their toes and keeps the audience dancing.

July 18th Louie & the Lovers
July 25th The Martin Paris Band
Sponsored by Atascadero Performing Arts Center Committee
The band “Louie and the Lovers” are Louie Ortega on vocals and guitars, Frank Paredes on vocals and guitar, Alberto Parra on vocals and drums and Steve Vargas on vocals and piano/keyboard. The group originated in Salinas CA. in 1968. While still in high school the band was discovered by Doug Saham, leader of the “sir Douglas Quintet” who had the hits “She’s’ about a Mover” and “Mendocino. He secured their first recording contract that year with Epic. Colombia Records while Clive Davis was the president of the company. Their first record ”Rise” was a regional hit and has gone on to cult status. In 1972 with the help of Doug Sahm “ Louie and the Lovers” were signed to Atlantic Records. Jerry Wexler was at the helm of the project, that included the legendary Tom Dowd as the engineer of the sessions. In 2008., “Louie and the Lovers the complete Recordings”, a 27 song CD emulating the song writing skills of Louie Ortega and special magic and combined musical efforts of Frank Paredes, Alberto Parra and Steve Vargas has brought them to the forefront once again. Louie Ortega and Frank Paredes at the crossroads in 1974 continued with their musical careers together. Louie went on to receive a Grammy with the “Texas Tornados” in 1990. Alberto Parra and Steve Vargas both had successful careers outside of the music in dustry, but are back and excited to be part of the reunion of “Louie and the Lovers”. With the release of the “Louie and the Lovers the Complete Recording” came the inspiration of collaborating to make another record. Their latest release and live performances show that they still have what it takes to bring it home, hence forth the title for their latest release and the excitement of creating new music together ;”Louie and the Lovers”… ”Rise Again”! Released November 1, 2014.
The Martin Paris Band presents a truly versatile music ensemble covering pop to jazz, country to blue grass, rock to swing; something for everyone. The band is comprised of Martin Paris singing vocals and playing acoustic guitar, Martin has opened for Laurence Juber and Peppino D’Agostino at Castoro Cellars and was a finalist at the Paso Robles Winery Music Awards in 2005. Vocalist Debbie White belts out tunes and croons ballads, while pulling the audience into the music with her energetic moves and smiles. Kelly Powers, on fiddle, guitar, and vocals. With his Nashville roots, his love is country, his heart is Bluegrass, but you’d never know it when he steps up to the plate and lets go with a rippin rock lead. Truly a versatile musician in his own right. L.A. Terry Newby on bass and vocals. Coming from a Los Angeles Rock/ blue background, his solid bass playing keeps the heartbeat of the band on track, and former “Intruder” Matt Wilson on drums, percussion and vocals. The newest member of the band Matt’s precision playing and fills have brought a new level of expertise to Martin Paris Band.

Summer Concert Series
August 15th The Damon Castillo Band The words “singer/songwriter” usually conjure up images of a lone voice and an acoustic guitar. Don’t get me wrong, Damon can do that. Just listen to “One Life Stand,” which could be the best wedding song ever. But he can also deliver big rock songs like “Encore” and “Secret,” pop songs like “All I Know,” and heartfelt R&B/Soul like ”Is It True”. And just as his writing chops let him cross genres at will, his production chops let him tailor each song to its most effective, whether that is warm and sweet, to grandiose and cinematic. Damon lives in San Luis Obispo, a town on the central coast of California. He operates out of a Laurel Lane, a studio he put together with his longtime bandmates, Larry Kim (saxophone, dg vocals) and Kristian Ducharme (keys), on the south side of town. Live, Damon is also accompanied by Abraham Robles (drums) and Ben Del Giorgio (bass). Damon has recently released his newest album “Mess of Me”. He wrote and produced it and had help with mixes from nine-time Grammy Award- winner F. Reid Shippen. Aaron Sterling (John Mayer, Sara Bareilles, Gavin Degraw) played some drums on it, and longtime band mates, Larry Kim and Kristian also contributed. “Mess of Me” is the follow up to 2011’s “Live at the Mission” and 2009’s “Laurel Lane”, an album produced by Grammy- Award winner Ross Hogarth. Guests on “Laurel Lane” include, Sheile E., Rami Jaffe ( Wallflowers, Foo Fighters), Sean Hurley(John Mayer, Alicia Keys, Vertical Horizon) and Lee Thornberg (Tower of Power, Supertramp).

When we started wedding planning we wanted our guests to be wowed and amazed by the food, us being self proclaimed ‘foodies’ we thought that was a detail our wedding needed. Located near the Atascadero Lake Park, the construction of the beautiful “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial was initiated by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. A 501C3 Non Profit Organization, the AVMF was founded specifically to design and to build a World Class Veterans Memorial here on the California Central Coast with a completed value of nearly $1,000,000. Built to honor all of America’s Veterans, the Memorial has three unique components: Hero’s Wall, the “Faces of Freedom” Statue, and “The Pathway to Freedom.” The Hero’s Wall specifically honors over 231 San Luis Obispo County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price with their selfless service and sacrifice to our nation. The “Faces of Freedom” Statue represents an artistic timeline that honors our nations’ military heroes from WWI to the present. The final component is “The Pathway to Freedom” a 20,000+ engraved brick pathway that leads to and embraces the Veterans Memorial. The Pathway’s purpose is to provide a place to honor both Veterans and Active Military in two ways: First of all, bricks may be engraved with the name of someone who currently serves or has served this great Nation; Second, it gives those who have not served an opportunity to show their support for our Veterans through a family or business brick. These engraved brick

The Beginning Dog Obedience class will cover sit-stand-down, walking on a leash with out pulling, come when called, sit & down stay.
