Located near the Atascadero Lake Park, the construction of the beautiful “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial was initiated by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. A 501C3 Non Profit Organization, the AVMF was founded specifically to design and to build a World Class Veterans Memorial here on the California Central Coast with a completed value of nearly $1,000,000. Built to honor all of America’s Veterans, the Memorial has three unique components: Hero’s Wall, the “Faces of Freedom” Statue, and “The Pathway to Freedom.” The Hero’s Wall specifically honors over 231 San Luis Obispo County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price with their selfless service and sacrifice to our nation. The “Faces of Freedom” Statue represents an artistic timeline that honors our nations’ military heroes from WWI to the present. The final component is “The Pathway to Freedom” a 20,000+ engraved brick pathway that leads to and embraces the Veterans Memorial. The Pathway’s purpose is to provide a place to honor both Veterans and Active Military in two ways: First of all, bricks may be engraved with the name of someone who currently serves or has served this great Nation; Second, it gives those who have not served an opportunity to show their support for our Veterans through a family or business brick. These engraved brick

Dog Obedience
kclanin@sbcglobal.net Ages: 12 & up
Instructor: Karen Clanin, 466-3775 or
Karen Clanin has been instructing classes at all levels since 1969 and started instructing for the City of Atascadero in 1979. The Beginning Dog Obedience class will cover sit-stand-down, walking on a leash without pulling, come when called, sit & down stay. Karen’s methods are mostly positive reinforcement, making the learning fun for the owner as well as the dog. For the 1st class, bring your dog on the collar you have and the leash you have (no harnesses please). Proper equipment will be discussed the first class. Also, bring a smelly, tasty, easy to swallow training treat. Karen suggests keeping the treats in a fanny pack so they are easy to get to. A copy of your dog’s immunization record, available from your vet, must be brought to the first class for Karen to keep. Class is scheduled for 1 hour, but may run over slightly so please allow the time. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult as they may require assistance. This class is not for aggressive dogs, if you have questions about this contact Karen and she may meet you privately for evaluation. Please no wolf or wolf-hybrids in class. The first class will meet at the Lake Park Bandstand, after that the class will be held at Karen’s facility at her home. Please email for directions if joining the class after the 1st week. kclanin@ sbcglobal.net

Instructor: Jim Bachman, 466-8383
“How do you get a guitar player to stop playing? Put sheet music in front of him.” This classic joke says a lot about the relationship between guitar players and reading music. Have you ever noticed that almost every trained piano player can leaf through books of sheet music, and not only sight-read songs they have never heard before, but do it the first time through, without mistakes, capturing the rhythm and feel of the songs amazingly well? Concert guitarists memorize their pieces, and unless they have had some time to look over the piece, they will almost certainly stumble somewhat when trying to sight-read something completely new. Are guitarists just worse at sight-reading? Are they lazy? Why can horn players and flute players do just fine with the notation, while the guitarists lag behind? Don’t settle for this. Reading music for the guitar is not hard, and here is your chance to finally learn! 3629.551

What is Pickleball you ask? Pickleball is like tennis, but played on a smaller court. It is very easy to learn (you serve underhand) and is fun for young and old alike! It’s great exercise, but low impact. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about and play a “new” sport that currently has almost 200,000 people playing across the United States. Pickleball is open to all ages and all skill levels. Equipment is provided and it’s $2/person to play for 2 hours.

Do you know what Animal Enrichment is? If not, now is your chance to learn! Enroll in these Saturday 1/2 day Camps to connect with the animals and learn what they like to do for fun! Enrichment is anything that encourages the animals to make choices, exhibit natural or species-appropriate behaviors. Enrichment also presents mental challenges for the animal, encourages physical activity/exercise and enhances their overall well-being. The campers will get to discover what type of enrichment is best for each animal, create it and then watch the animal ambassador enjoy it! If time allows, you can make your own take-home enrichment for the animals in your own backyard! Each month we will highlight one specific animal here at the Zoo. Do your kids have a favorite animal from our list? Maybe they love all kinds of animals and want to enroll in all of the camps!
