Dr. Denise Sheridan presents

New Times' Ashley Schwellenbach moderates

"Quilting a Culture & All That Jazz: A Legacy of African American Artistic Rhythms"

"Don’t Feed the Artists"

Paso Robles City Hall/Library Conference Center, 1000 Spring Street Reflecting on her journey in an extended family of material culture artists, Dr. Sheridan will share the cultural and familial musings that inspire her work as a nationally-recognized African American quilt artist and scholar. From New Orleans Jazz to moving Gospel Spirituals, the heritage woven into Sheridan's narrative quilts is a culturally enlightening experience not to be missed. FREE ($5 suggested donation).

Panelists: Neal Breton, Charmaine Martinez, Drew Silvaggio, David Settino Scott Paso Robles City Hall/Library Conference Center, 1000 Spring Street This is not your mother’s art talk...but you should probably bring her anyway. Four rockstar members of the local arts community — and one moderator who likes to talk to themy — join forces to undermine the fallacious notion that art is a luxury rather than a necessity. They’ll answer seemingly simple questions like what qualifies a person to refer to themselves as that most romantic of figures — the artist. As well as share their triumphs and low points. This is a talk for the highbrow, low brow, and every brow in between. If you have even a passing interest in art, you’ll enjoy this conversation. 3pm - 4:30pm. FREE ($5 suggested donation). Charmaine Martinez is an associate professor of graphic design at Cal Poly. She has a passion for typography, love of creative experimentation, and interest in design advocacy. She has a background in graphic design, book arts, printmaking, and mixed media installation. In 1993 she received her BFA in graphic design from the University of Notre Dame and in 2003 she received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. www.juiciful.net

5 - 7:30pm Premiere Party & Keynote Address Studios on the Park, 1130 Pine Street and Park Ballroom, 1232 Park Street Preview the "Local Color" and "Plein Air Masters" at Studios on the Park and enjoy appetizers by Cahoots and Anglim wines followed by Stephen Doherty's lively presentation “Plein Air Painters. Crazy About Nature or Just Plain Crazy?” $30 Tickets are available at www.pasoartfestival.com

David Settino Scott is a San Miguel resident who has made painting his passion and profession for several decades. Throughout his extensive and varied career he has created, through painting and sculpture, a series of slave ships that marry the beauty of the open sea with the tragedy of the slave trade; rendered a series of portraits of friends and fellow artists that debuted at the Steynberg Gallery; and has a healthy body of work consisting of paintings of flowers. He consciously works to incorporate social awareness and activism in his work with results like The Human Series depicting the victims of political murders around the world. www.davidsettinoscott.com Drew Silvaggio stages visual feasts as the artistic director of Civic Ballet, helped found a Pacific Coast Dance Convergence called Jumpbrush that occurs on alternate years at the PAC in SLO, choreographed for SLO Little Theatre's hit musical “My Generation,” and coordinates and participates in flashmobs. When he's not staging his elegant annual production of The Nutcracker he's assembling wild productions of Alice in Wonderland and a show titled Sidewalk Stories based on the popular children's book Where the Sidewalk Ends. www.jumpbrush.org

7:30pm Neal Breton has made it his mission to mobilize youth art culture in San Luis Obispo County. He opened San Luis Art Supply in 2009, and has participated in dozens of art shows in galleries, coffee shops, and empty nooks and walls. He's a regular illustrator for New Times and San Louie has helped coordinate Art After After Dark at the SLOMA, and is a major mover and shaker for the local arts community. www.NealBreton.com

Feasting on Art Dinner Chico's Caffe, 834 11th Street An intimate multi-course fine dining experience at Chico's Caffe. Join Stephen Doherty, Editor-in-Chief of PleinAir Magazine for an incredible evening of conversation and great food. $45 Tickets are available at www.pasoartfestival.com

Panel Moderator Ashley Schwellenbach worked as New Times Arts Editor for almost five years and has worked as Managing Editor for the last two years. Besides being a co-founder and editor of San Louie, an art-focused publication featuring local writers and visual artists, she’s coordinated public art shows and events including Box City and a series of flashmobs. As much as she loves writing about work by other artists, she’s enjoyed placing greater emphasis on rolling up her sleeves and diving into the art scene on a more participatory basis in recent years.

Susan Greaves

Thank You!

The Festival of the Arts thanks Chico’s Caffe for their generous support of the arts. The Feasting on Art Dinner will be one to remember!

Original artworks in a variety of media celebrate the authentic beauty of northern San Luis Obispo County. Plein Air Masters Special Exhibition World-renowned art editor Mr. Stephen Doherty is this year’s guest of honor and keynote speaker. Mr. Doherty’s involvement in the arts goes back to the 1970s. With his Masters of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University, he served 31 years as editor-in-chief of American Artist, American Artist Watercolor, and American Artist Drawing magazines. He is currently the editor-in-chief of the print and digital editions of PleinAir Magazine. During that time he authored hundreds of articles on artists working in every media and style. His books include The Artist in Nature—Thomas Kinkade and the Plein Air Tradition. Mr. Doherty has judged national art shows and competitions and served on the advisory boards of arts organizations, and frequently lectures on the arts. In the past decade, he has become a committed plein-air painter himself, enjoying what he describes as “the passionate community of artists who share my love for painting from nature outdoors and in the studio.” Inspired by Mr. Doherty, Studios on the Park hosts the invitational exhibition, “Plein Air Masters.” Popularized by French Impressionists in the 19th century, painting “en plein air” is done outside, “in the open air,” using natural light. Paintings by 24 premier California Plein Air artists are featured. Participating artists: Robert Abbott Marcia Burtt Chris Chapman Marsha Connell John Cosby Glenn Dean Karl Dempwolf Kathleen Dunphy
