Choose a Fast Food Restaurant

A

re all fast food restaurants the same? Do you prefer one over another? How do you choose where you’ll get that next hamburger? These days, you can step into a fast food restaurant and eat a hamburger with confidence. But that wasn’t always the case. A hundred years ago, Americans couldn’t eat hamburgers without being concerned about sanitary conditions. Many beef burgers were viewed as unsafe because of the cheap meat used in the process. Famous muckraker Upton Sinclair wrote an expose on how hamburgers were produced. This 1906 series alerted the public that reforms needed to happen. Yet during this time, businessman Walt Anderson from Wichita, Kansas, wanted to open a hamburger stand in a converted streetcar. His stand could be located in the center of town. He convinced Billy Ingram, a salesman, to invest in the idea. Anderson finally opened his stand in 1916. This businessman was an innovator, who believed in making quality burgers that were safe and tasty. His ideas were so successful that fast food restaurants still follow them today. Anderson made his hamburgers tiny, with five holes in the middle. He also standardized the process. Each hamburger was cooked the same way each time. As his business grew, he hired others to cook. They used the same method to make the hamburgers. Consumers could verify that the burgers were being made safely because they watched their food being prepared and cooked. This process convinced the public that the product was safe to eat. Anderson told his customers that the five holes helped the meat cook properly. The businessman marked his product

by giving away samples and handing out coupons. His marketing slogan? “Buy ‘em by the sack.” All of his restaurants looked the same, with white interiors, to stress the safety and cleanliness of his operation. People wanted to buy his restaurants, but Anderson and Ingram refused to sell them. Even though Anderson sold his share in the early 1930s, Ingram’s descendants still own the chain. These days, you can still use these same ideas when choosing a fast food restaurant.

Look for a unique product. Whether it is fried chicken made by a special recipe or a hamburger with five holes in it, the food should not be bland. Second, the food should be the same each time you visit. It doesn’t matter who is preparing it. You have the right to expect your food to look and taste the same each time you purchase it. You can breathe easy when you see the product being prepared. Watching your hamburger as it is being made will put your mind at ease. It will also increase the safety of the food. Health Department ratings should be on the wall and easy to view.

Good restaurants will still entice customers with free samples and coupons. They may offer reduced prices during a certain time of day. Even though you probably won’t be able to get into the kitchen, talk to the staff about safety measures. They should feel very comfortable talking about how the food is prepared. The owners of the restaurant should have their names prominently displayed. If a problem occurs, then you can speak to them directly. Fast food doesn’t have to taste ‘fast.’ Find the one that meets your taste buds, budget and safety.

Choose a Funeral Home

ooking for a funeral home isn’t a pleasant journey.

Making funeral arrangements can be hard. Dealing with the death of a loved one is a challenge. That’s why it is better to think ahead so you can have a clear mind while making these difficult decisions. Most people don’t have much experience with planning funerals. When the time comes to visit a funeral home, they find prices vary dramatically. Indeed,

funerals can be costly. Planning before your time of grief will help you make wise decisions under difficult circumstances. Here are some things to consider when you must select a funeral home. The first step is to find out if the deceased has made any funeral arrangements and whether these plans need to be changed. Sometimes weather may be an issue or other factors may get in the way of what has already been

planned. If no arrangements were made, ask family and friends to see if the deceased made any specific wishes. If possible, respect those wishes. If pre-arrangements with a local company exist, then contact that company. Arrangements bought years ago may not cover the cost of the funeral or represent the latest wishes of the deceased. If you are in this situation, look around to see if another funeral home has a better arrangement, or make adjustments as necessary. To find the right funeral home, ask family, friends and pastors for a recommendation. It is a good way to focus on funeral homes with excellent reputations. You might also consider your own experiences at funeral homes in your city. If you cannot get referrals, look on the Internet. Select three or four funeral homes that might fit your needs. Visit each one with a close friend or relative. Budget is a major concern for most people. Inquire about basic fees. Ask about services the funeral home may offer and if payment arrangements can be made. Ask questions and take notes. Staff members should be patient with you. It is important to get written estimates for everything. Ask about hours for viewing, in-house versus off-site services, cremation services, additional fees and special requests. The Federal Trade Commission

mandates that funeral homes must provide customers with a price list. If you believe the casket prices are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges. Do not decide on a funeral home right away. Think about it for a bit. The decision should be made with clarity. After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director can help you with the required forms and permits. You should have a copy of the death certificates and make the actual burial or cremation arrangements. When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don’t need or can’t afford. Stay within your budget. Talk to the funeral home and tell them who in the deceased’s family is authorized to make decisions. Be very detailed about your expectations and what kind of arrangements you want. Tell them if something is not being done according to your intentions. Good funeral homes will guide you through the process to ensure that the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. In your time of grief and hardship, preplanning can give you a small measure of comfort and peace.

How to

Choose the Right Landscaper

T

here is nothing like looking out the window to see beautifully maintained grass. Blooming flowers, rocks and moss will give your surroundings beauty and a feeling of warmth. A well-landscaped yard, cared for by a professional, will increase the value of your home and property. If you are in the market for a landscaper, consider these tips. Types of Landscapes There are usually five types of landscaped yards. Each requires the landscaper to have a different skill set. It is best to determine which landscape appeals to you before you begin your search for a quality professional. A formal garden uses many geometrical shapes in it’s design. Plants provide a focal point, making the yard appear balanced. To achieve this design, a landscaper will need to carefully prune hedges. An informal landscape looks like organized chaos. Plants appear to be placed randomly. Landscapers who use this design should be skilled at working with planters and urns. The English garden landscape uses the house as its focal point. All aspects of the yard will flow together. Professionals who use this design should be skilled at working with climbing vines, critical to this style. Oriental designs use rocks, mosses and evergreens. Calmness and quiet minimalism tend to be the effect of this style. To create a woodland design, the landscape must have great knowledge of native plants and making them look their best. Set Your Budget Cost is always a concern when hiring a home improvement specialist. Set a budget and stick to it. Understand what you can afford and are willing to spend annually on your landscaping. It will help you prioritize your list so you can at least get your necessities. You might need to make sacrifices. If

you need a new landscaping wall, you might have to delay getting a sprinkler system. On the other hand, if irrigation is a must, then you might need to cut back on how often your lawn is mowed each month. Even if your budget is tight, don’t get discouraged. Some landscapers may charge less in order to get your business. Prioritize Your Needs Determining what you need will help you decide which services you require from a landscaping company. Most professionals offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden installations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures.

How to Guide | 6 |

Get Referrals Neighbors are sometimes the best way to get referrals. If you like what you see in their yard, ask them for their landscaper’s name. Discuss the pros and cons of the service as well. You can even watch the company perform work. It will give you an idea about their employees and work habits even before contacting them. You could also do an online search for landscaping companies. Be sure to read reviews from prior customers. Keep in mind, though, not all bad reviews are necessarily true. Some past clients may harbor a grudge and could inflate the problem. Good reviews also need to be taken into consideration. Some companies have people post good reviews even if the person has never used their service. Also check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for more information. If any complaints have been lodged against the company, the BBB will inform you.

Consider Availabilty Availability is another factor when looking for a landscaper. One of the first questions to ask is how often the company will be available for maintenance. If you want to be home while the landscaper is working, make sure you can coordinate your schedule. Also consider community regulations. For example, if your town has noise regulations, ask each landscape company what they will do to adhere to them. Once you find a landscaper that meets your needs, you can sit back and enjoy your bountiful reward.

How to

Choose an Interior Decorator

Y

our home and office say a lot about your personality and character. The interior design you choose will show off your personality and the uniqueness of you. Does your home need an update? Is the outdated appearance making you feel bored? Or maybe you have recently built a beautiful new home and need someone with a good eye to help you complete the project? An interior decorator can enhance your style or help you find a whole new look for your home. Selecting the right interior decorator will help save you time and money. Know Your Personal Taste Before hiring a decorator, think about your personal tastes. Leaf through magazines and clip out designs that appeal to you to get an idea of what is available. You could also look on the Internet and print out specific looks you like. Put them in a three-ringed binder or file folder with a comment about why it attracts you. Seeing your preferences will help the decorator understand how to fulfill your needs. It is also a good idea to learn some interior design terminology so you can speak the same language as the designer. Do you know the difference between a club chair, armoire and highboy? Studying the words they use will help you avoid disappointment later. Locate Interior Decorators Research the names and contact information of interior decorators. The National Kitchen and Bath Association and the American Society of Interior Design have a list of interior decorators in your area. Check with your family and friends as well. In particular, if you know someone whose home you adore, ask who did the work. Choose three interior decorators to interview. Typically, these meetings occur in their offices, but sometimes a prospective interior decorator will want to meet in your home. He or she might want to see the house in order to provide

specific details. Other decorators prefer to hold interviews in their offices so you can see their previous work and look at samples. Cost of an Interior Decorator Ask about how bills are handled. Usually there are three methods of payment. The first is by-the-hour. The interior designer will ask that you pay for a minimum number of hours. Once those hours are gone, you may choose to purchase more time in bulk or they may opt to work on an hourly basis. The second payment option is costplus. When interior decorators purchase items for your home, they simply add a percentage to the cost. If the decorator uses this method, be sure to discuss your overall budget with them. They will welcome your honesty. The third choice is a combination of bythe-hour and cost-plus. Certification and Training Currently, 26 states require interior decorators to be certified. The National Kitchen and Bath Association and the American Society of Interior Design oversee these certifications. These professional organizations have their own requirements. By their rules, decorators must have at least an associate’s degree, serve an apprenticeship, and then pass an exam to become certified. Once a decorator has passed an initial exam, professionals can continue their education to prove mastery in specialized skills. Style The best interior decorators have strong personal design philosophies. You will see it in their portfolios and when you speak to them. The ideal professional will have an ability to understand and reflect your style. After all, you are the person who will live in your home. They should fit in with your style, not the other way around. Find someone who is flexible and communicative. If the person doesn’t take criticism well, that is not a person you want to work with.

How to Guide | 8 |

Once you have interviewed three interior decorators, choose one you have a connection with. Continue discussing time frames, costs and other details about the project. Do not make payments until you have a contract.

Finding an interior decorator might seem like an overwhelming task. Through research, communication and staying true to your own style, you can find a decorator who will transform your house into a true home.

How to

Choose an Auto Repair Shop

How to Guide | 10 |

R

egular maintenance on a vehicle is necessary to keep it running great and avoid large repair bills. Having a good relationship with a highquality auto repair shop will save you time and hassle when your vehicle needs an immediate repair. It doesn’t matter whether the car is new or used. At some point, it will need tires, oil changes or even a new engine. If you have a good auto repair shop you trust, it will make these nuances that much easier to accomplish. If you don’t have a regular mechanic, take your car in for a regular tune-up and maintenance. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to get an oil change or to service the air conditioning. This is a great way to try out a shop to see if they meet your needs. Here are some other things to keep in mind when looking for an auto repair shop: • Most people choose an auto repair shop based on a referral from friends, family or coworkers. Less than 40 percent of new customers are walkins. • The Better Business Bureau can inform you about the repair shop’s performance and reliability. • People who travel often usually work with shops that offer a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. • Ask about the shop’s range of services. They will need the latest technology to diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can

your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • I nquire about their customer satisfaction policy. Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, well-lit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism. • L ook for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These

parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Shop shops may use remade or generic brands which your insurance policy may not cover, so be sure to check. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90 percent or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services

advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges. Don’t pick a shop based on cost; poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship with your mechanic. When you have great communication, getting repair work completed will be less painful.

Purchasing a new car can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you have never done it before. Finding a dealer you can trust will defuse anxiety. Inexperienced car shoppers are often intimidated by the cost, the process and even dealers who may try to overcharge them. It doesn’t have to be this way. The whole experience will become a simple, low-pressure transaction if you find the right dealership. Good car dealers will make the entire process of buying a car simple and straightforward. Choose the Right Car Selecting the right automobile for your needs and lifestyle is essential. Large families may need an SUV or van to fit everyone into the vehicle. But college students buying their first car would probably be happy with a compact car such as coupe. The savings on gas will help ease your finances while you are in school. Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and satellite radio, just to name a few. If you have to commute long distances, think about purchasing a smaller car with a good MPG (miles per gallon) rating. Hybrid cars can help you save money on gas. Anyone in a cold climate might look at various vehicles with either all-wheel or front-wheel drive.

Choose the Dealer Once you have settled on a car model, check into area car dealers. Finding several dealers who sell the brand of car you want is usually best. The competition for your business will help you negotiate the total cost of your car. Make sure to look for current discounts on the car you want. During specific times of the year, you might be able to get a great deal on a new car. It is particularly true during year-end sales. Of course, you should test-drive a car before purchasing it. When you begin your negotiations, remember that price isn’t everything. Service should play a role as well. You are building a long-term relationship with this dealer and manufacturer. It is not worth getting a less-than-satisfactory experience just to save a few dollars. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the dealership. Buying a car is an expensive, long-term commitment. It is always better to find a car salesperson who is informative and friendly. It will make your transaction as simple and comfortable as possible.

How to

Choose a lawn tractor

E

veryone knows it’s important to use the right tool for the job, and choosing a lawn tractor is no different. Tractors can be very expensive, so you will want to make sure you find one within your budge and that will do the work you purchased it for. Lawn tractors can help cut down the time it takes to mow your lawn. A high-quality vehicle can assist you with a variety of tasks, making landscaping easier and even more enjoyable. Finding a good lawn tractor that is built to last will go a long way toward making your job less of a hassle. THE RIGHT FIT Lawn tractors come in a variety of capabilities and price points. Most range from $1,000 for a simple, basic model to $8,000 or more for a fully-featured, commercial-grade tractor. In between, you will find a vast mixture of features and durability. You can select the right model by asking yourself how you will use the lawn tractor. The size of your lawn is important, of course. Bigger lawns need a wider mowing deck. You should also consider other things you will do with your lawn tractor. High-end lawn tractors are more like pieces of farm equipment than traditional ride-on mowers. You can purchase accessories for them, such as baggers, trailers, powerful tillers and snowblowers. You are not only buying a lawn mower. These tractors are platforms that can be used for all kinds of jobs. So check on the accessories that come with each model, even if you don’t plan on purchasing them yet. You may appreciate the choices in the future. SPEED, MANEUVERABILITY Most people want to finish the job in the least amount of time. While it is true that large mowing decks will cover more ground with each pass, there are other things to consider as well. The transmission and speed is also a factor. How easy is it for you to change

gears and turn in different directions? The zero-turn mower is another popular option. These vehicles can turn quickly and precisely to cut lawns of all sizes and shapes. While they have been used for years by commercial lawn crews, only recently have these mowers become affordable for the average homeowner. Zero-turn mowers are particularly useful when mowing close to homes, playground equipment and other tight areas.

How to Guide | 12 |

DURABILITY The longevity of your lawn tractor is also an important consideration. The brand’s reputation should weigh heavily when you are making a decision. Research consumer reviews and talk to your friends and family members about the best brands of lawn products. Also, visiting a retail store and talking to knowledgeable salespeople will also help you. There are plenty of low-end, affordable riding mowers out there, but few have a reputation for durability. It is economical in the long run to choose a well-built model from a reputable manufacturer. Inspect the construction of each lawn

mower careful to verify that it will meet your needs. While you probably don’t need the extreme engineering and high price of a commercial-grade model, you ought to buy the best model you can afford and follow the maintenance directions closely. It will help you get the most usage for your money. Finding a good dealer is an essential part of the process. When you locate an experienced local retailer with a long track record of happy customers, you will be well on your way to selecting the right lawn tractor for you.

How to

Tips for Buying and Selling Coins

C

oin collecting is one of the most popular hobbies world-wide. People collect coins for various reasons. Some collect them for their monetary value, as a way to trade and make a profit. Others collect them because they enjoy looking at them. Collecting coins is a fascinating and lucrative hobby. A coin’s design is influenced by history. It is an excellent way to learn about governments and countries. It is also a great investment if you purchase coins that increase in value. But it is not a simple hobby because of all the factors that impact the value of each individual coin, from its history to its quality and scarcity. If you are considering starting a coin collection, here are some things to keep in mind. Know What You Have Research is key for coin collectors. Thankfully, there are a lot of resources that can help you understand what you are buying or selling. It is important to discover everything you can about a coin before purchasing it. If you have inherited coins, or have received them as gifts, educate yourself on their background and value. Coin shops likely have books that can help you get started. You can also find information at the local library and Internet. Once you have completed your research, you can start buying and selling with confidence. Understand Coin Grades Knowing coin grades is essential if you

collect coins. This system assigns a value based on the coin’s condition. The grading process is pivotal. You could have the same two coins -- same year, same mint, same design -- and they could be worth drastically different prices based on the score they received when being graded. Coins in near-perfect condition are very rare and are more valuable than modified or damaged coins. Don’t Clean Coins Never clean your coin collection. Novices are often tempted to give their coins a polish. Shinier coins must be worth more, right? Cleaning or polishing a coin can destroy its worth. It removes some of the original finish, rendering the coin far less valuable as a result. Real collectors prize coins that are in their original, pristine condition.

How to Guide | 14 |

Ask Questions Ask questions, no matter how trivial you think they might be. It is the only way you will learn and grow as a collector. Look for more experienced collectors in your area. You can find them at coin shows and shops. There may even be clubs in your community. Ask them about the best coins to buy. Find how about their successes and failures. It will help you avoid pitfalls. It is hard to know what is reputable online. That’s why networking in your area and finding people with great reputations is a better way to get your questions answered. Spend Time at the Coin Shop Develop a relationship with your favorite coin shop. Hanging out there can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. It will also help build

your collection. Once a dealer knows your interests, he can call you with information about the coins you are seeking. Networking with employees may also help you develop new friendships that come out of common interests. Doing these things will help you avoid wasting time and money on bad purchases. It will also pass the time, as you accumulate more knowledge. Soon you will be on your way toward becoming a seasoned collector. But once you become an expert, don’t keep the knowledge to yourself. Give back to the coin collecting community. Help others develop in interest in the hobby as well.

et’s face it, without tires, your vehicle isn’t going anywhere. Tires are an essential component of your automobile. They can make a big difference in your riding experience and affect a car’s steering and balance. Tires can ensure a smooth, safe drive. So finding a great tire shop is important to any automobile owner. Choose Your Budget Cost should play a role in your decision-making process. Figure out what you can afford to pay for tires. It will stop you from wasting time at expensive shops. Hopefully, you will only need to buy tires once a year; depending on how much you drive your car. Choose Type of Tires When selecting tires, consider the climate you live in. If it is dry and warm, then a standard tire will be fine. But if you live in a place that gets a lot of snow, then you will want a better grade of tires. Snow tires are good for snow or dry land. High performances tires are good for driving at high speeds. If you commute a long distance, be sure to choose highmileage tires. Choose an Outlet There are a variety of ways you can purchase tires. They are available through national chains or a local auto shop. You may even buy them online. Buying tires in person allows you to inspect the tires. You can see exactly what you are getting. When you purchase tires online it is difficult to judge what you are getting. National chain stores usually guarantee

the product. They might be more costly, but buying them a big store may give you peace of mind. Local shops will likely be more inexpensive, and you might get more personalized service. Ultimately, your choice should fit your priorities and budget. New or Used Some people don’t mind purchasing used tires. Pulloffs are tires that came with a new car, but the new car buyer wanted custom tires. As a result, pulloffs are almost new. Does your tire shop guarantee pulloff tires? If a dealer sells new and pulloff tires, the tire installer may not realize that each tire must replicate the way it was installed on the previous car. Failure to do so will result in the steel belt breaking through. When tires have had the worn treads replaced, they are called retreads. A factory buffs the old tread and attaches a new one. Inspections ensure the casing is strong enough to hold a new tread. If you are on a budget, pulloffs and retreads are great choices. Anyone who purchases used tires should inspect each tire thoroughly. Bubbles, holes, cuts and metal showing are a sign that you should not purchase the product. It may not be safe. Check out the Shops When you visit a shop, look at their products and meet their employees. You should feel as though the salespeople are trustworthy and knowledgeable. Once you find a good tire shop, you will likely return again for other products. It is important that you develop a good working relationship.
