HOW TO
Memory Care Centers
How to Choose a Memory Care Center
M
emory loss can be a frightening experience. For elderly or infirm patients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia it is a major turning point in life. But the good news is there are new options in care services for those struggling with memory loss. These memory care centers are different from nursing homes or traditional assisted living centers in some important ways. Staff members at these centers are specially trained and experienced in caring for those suffering with dementia. Activities and rehabilitative therapies keep residents as independent for as long as possible.
Always visit a memory care center before admitting a loved one. Tour the facilities to make sure the building is clean and organized. The atmosphere should be calm and relaxing. Consistency and stability are important to those suffering from memory loss. The center should have a low turnover rate among staff members. No memory care center should rely heavily on part-time workers. Ask about the ratio of staff to residents, as well as the backgrounds of any medical practitioners employed by the center. Your loved one needs personalized care and attention. It is vital that the center has enough workers on staff to provide quality care for your loved one.
STAFF The experience and attitude of the staff members is one of the most important considerations. They should treat all patients with kindness and respect. The center should also provide continuing education to employees to assure that everyone is up to date with the latest in memory loss research and care.
SECURE, COMFORTABLE SETTING Quality memory care centers will resemble comfortable, inviting homes. They should not look like hospitals. The facility should be clean and sanitary without appearing sterile. A center’s cleanliness is an indication of the dedication and price of everyone who works there.
4 | HOW TO GUIDE
Ask questions about the activities offered to residents, how visits are handled and the types of therapies available. Because patients can sometimes forget where they are, it is important to ask how the center protects its residents. What kind of security features do they use? Note your general impressions of each center you visit. SUPPORT Quality memory care centers have support services for residents and families. Symptoms from dementia can range from mild to extreme. The center should be equipped to handle all stages of dementia. The best centers have support groups for residents and family members. You and your loved one should be comfortable with the memory care center you choose. The best facilities can give patients a much needed boost and improve their overall quality of life.

Assisted Living Centers
How to Choose an Assisted Living Center
A
ssisted living centers help patients continue to live an active lifestyle in comfortable, cost-effective settings that offer many conveniences and amenities. People often need extra care as they age. Some, particularly those confronting severe health challenges, need regular care that is significantly beyond the scope of what family members or close friends are able to provide. Some just need to be in an environment where someone is on hand to check on them throughout the day. Bottom line: all assisted care centers are not the same. Some assisted care centers double as full-time medical facilities and assisted living centers are popular options for people who need medical attention. In the past, long-term care could only be handled by a nursing home. Living in a hospital setting for an extended time was not a pleasant environment. When looking for an assisted care center, consider some of these factors.
cility that has park-like areas. Some centers have community-style gardens and walkways for residents. Just being able to see nature as it grows and changes with the seasons can be uplifting and soothing. An assisted living center with a manicured lawn and garden can make a huge difference in the quality of life for a loved one.
HOME AMENITIES Accommodations at these centers can range from luxurious, detached cottages to cozy condominiums. It all depends on what you are looking for, what you can afford, and what is available. As you visit the facilities, try to personalize each space. Imagine how your loved one’s belongings might fit into the area and where decorations will be placed. Does the atmosphere bring about a feeling of peace and tranquility? How are the rooms decorated? Are they tasteful and soothing, or do they remind you of a hospital setting? Look at the home amenities and consider how you would feel about GARDEN AND LANDSCAPING living there. lonely. Leaving the confines of their units is an important part of recovery. Make sure the center offers activities and space to occupy your loved one’s time. Quality facilities will have activities that match his or her hobbies. If your family member enjoys crafts, then look for a center with a designated craft area or classes for your loved one to enjoy. PERSONAL CARE Ask your loved one’s personal physician how much care is required to function safely. The doctor may even be able to guide you toward an appropriate facility. Be sure to seek advice on what qualifications and certifications you need to look for in the center’s staff. The center’s employees should be well-qualified to handle medical needs. If you monitor the medical care, you can avoid paying for extensive services that your loved one may not need. Understanding the care the person requires will help you find a center that is a good fit. Choosing an assisted living facility is about finding the right combination of medical services and amenities. With research and thought, you will find the perfect place to bring comfort and care to your loved one.

The colors in this facility reflect the surrounding landscape. Families of residents at Annette Lodge will be able to participate in facility activities as well as enjoy the beautiful downtown amenities of Paso Robles. Residents can tour the weekly farmers market, at the downtown park, and assist with fruit and vegetable choices in season.

Speech & Language
How to Choose a Speech Language Pathologist
W
hat is a Speech Language Pathologist, also known as an SLP, and who can benefit from their services? Most SLPs complete an undergraduate and master’s level degree in the areas of communication and neurological disorders. After passing national boards and graduating, a clinical fellowship year of at least 9 months must be completed to earn full credentialing, CCCSLP. This stands for Certified Clinical Competence. Most people think of SLPs as the “Speech Teacher” in the school system. However, there is so much more to the world of speech pathology. SLPs work with clients of all ages, not just school age children. Babies and children who have difficulty eating and drinking are treated by SLPs who have specialty training in pediatric feeding disorders. If you feel that your baby/child chokes frequently, has difficulty latching and/or drinking from the breast,

bottle, or cup, struggles with transitioning from purees to solids and/or is a “picky” eater, a feeding disorder could be why. Children and adolescents who have difficulty articulating speech sounds correctly, reading, understanding directions, forming sounds due to decreased muscle strength, interacting appropriately in social environments, and/or have sensory issues may benefit from participating in speech therapy. As we get older, muscles become weaker, bodies break down, the ability to protect the airway decreases, voices tire, memories fade and the need for a “tune up” becomes more evident. Speech Language Pathologists have the training and tools to improve these areas to promote independence and a higher quality of life with communication and activities of daily living. Finding the right therapist who will provide encouragement and support in addition
to the appropriate level of challenge is the key. Most outpatient clinics accept commercial insurance and Medicare. However, not all SLPs stay relevant with the most current research and outcomes based information. Continuing education is key to providing the highest quality assessment and treatment. Make sure to ask your therapist what experience and training she/ he has had to increase positive outcomes. Before scheduling an appointment, verify your insurance benefits so there are no surprises when you’re billed. Speech Therapy is a specialty area and your specific plan determines the coverage of services. Scheduling an appointment immediately may be difficult due to the limited number of licensed providers in your area. Speech Language Pathologists are highly skilled, valuable, and worth the wait!

How to Choose Cremation Services
C
remation can be an emotional subject. In fact, some faiths frown on it. But for those who have no qualms about cremation, it presents a great opportunity to plan in advance. Making plans for your funeral is a tough subject. Most people would rather skip the subject or opt to have others plan their funerals. But the reality is procrastination or avoidance does not change reality. It is always best to take care of details in advance. Making decisions in advance about cremation services can take the burden off loved ones during a painful time. Otherwise, they will need to make tough choices while stressed and grieving. Cremation services are becoming more popular these days. They can be a cost-effective alternative to traditional burials. With cremation, the family doesn’t have to purchase an expensive casket. Loved ones may spend more money than they can afford in an effort to respect the memory of the de-

ceased. But a cremation service is an affordable way to respectfully memorialize a friend or family member. The service can be a peaceful time to grieve and remember. A funeral home may have a partnership or connection with a cremation center. They may have additional services, such as grief counseling or assistance with necessary paperwork. After the cremation, you will receive an urn. You can choose to bury the urn, keep it in your home or place it in a memorial building. When searching for a cremation center, check with your family or friends for referrals. If you cannot get an appropriate referral, you might be able to join a cremation society. For a small fee, you will receive upto-date information about your options and the process. Membership may also help you obtain a lower-cost on cremation services. These societies will provide assistance with many details connected to the service and disposition of remains.
The Internet Cremation Society and the Cremation Society of North America are sources of information about cremation societies. Once you have narrowed your choices, consider how you feel about the staff of the cremation center. You should feel comfortable asking questions. The employees should be knowledgeable, competent and pleasant. They should give you all of the details about price breakdowns, and their process of making ashes for the urn. By doing a little research and choosing wisely, you can make the process a little easier for loved ones during a difficult time. Discuss with your loved ones and family members their preference for when they pass. Talk with them and explain your own so that there will not be any misunderstandings or second-guessing after the fact. While it is not the most pleasant topic in the world, it will help ease some of the stress.

Real Estate
How to Choose a Real Estate Agent
W
hen you are buying or selling a home, it is essential to choose the right real estate agent for your needs. The best real estate agents are energetic, positive and proactive. On the other hand, selecting the wrong agent can cost you lots of time and money. So how do you find the best agent for your situation? Here are some ideas to keep in mind. Real Estate Agent vs. Realtor A real estate agent may or may not be a realtor, but every realtor is required to be a licensed real estate agent. To become a realtor, a real estate agent has to join the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This allows him or her to attend industry meetings, get NAR newsletters, and access software and educational tools. Realtors adhere to a strict code of ethics and have solid knowledge of the real estate business. These professionals have been trained well, which means they will provide you with the best service. Where to Start Looking Recommendations are one of the best ways to find a qualified real estate agent or realtor. Ask people in your social network for referrals.

conducting open houses to invite the public for home viewings. If you are purchasing a home, the agent should listen to your guidelines and price ranges. Above all, your real estate agent needs to provide updates on progress. Do not work with someone who does not return phone calls or emails.
More Resources To get a better idea about the process of buying and selling a home, conduct some research on your own. Real estate magazines contain good information and can be a great way to start your research. There are also a lot of good resources on the Internet, such as www. Realtor.com, which is associated with NAR and which contains free, useful information. You may find housing statistics, market forecasts and tips, but nothing beats the power of networking. How to choose a Handgun

Handguns
O
wning a firearm of any kind is a huge responsibility. There are so many kinds out there for so many needs. So when you decide to buy a gun, you want to make sure you will get the best quality and the right type of gun for you. Whether you are new to the firearms market or an experienced collector, choosing a handgun takes consideration and time. SIZE AND CALIBER When looking for a handgun to fit your technical and physical needs, it is a good idea to visit a gun shop. Size is going to be a big factor. A large framed pistol is fine if you aren’t planning on carrying the gun on your body. These weapons hold more ammunition in the magazine. You will probably be able to manage the recoil better. Smaller pistols are excellent choices for carrying concealed. It might have stronger recoil because it is a lighter weight. Most concealed carry guns are specifically designed to use at close

accuracy in an emergency situation. In self-defense situations, you’re usually firing fast and instinctively. So it is good to have a gun that reflects your firing style.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER Along with size and caliber, there are other things to keep in mind. There are two types of handguns: the automatic and the revolver. Automatics are more modern and usually come in smaller calibers, known as “auto calibers.” Since they are typically clip-fed, automatics are complicated. They can be slightly more difficult to clean and operate, but they are fast to fire and easy to reload. On the other hand, revolvers are simpler and more traditional. They have been around a lot longer. There are a wider range of calibers and they are easier to clean, but the firing speed and reload time is significantly reduced. Revolvers are great options for beginners, though some automatics are just as good. Point-and-shoot accuracy is more important than sighted
WARNINGS You should be able to operate your weapon easily. Learn how to switch the safety on and off before you attempt to use it. You should also know how to load and fire the gun. Spend plenty of time with your weapon at a firing range. Become familiar with its limitations. Responsible gun ownership starts with gun safety. Never leave your pistol where children can get to it. Handle your weapon in a manner that is safe for you and those around you. Always treat it as though it is loaded, and never point it at anyone you don’t intend to shoot. A knowledgeable gun shop can answer all your questions. Find a shop in your area where employees are passionate about educating the public.

HOW TO
Solar Energy
How to Choose a Solar Energy Company S
olar panels can lower your home or business energy bills while helping the planet and adding val-
ue to your property. That’s why more Americans are turning to solar power. As a result, more companies are offering to install solar panels. So it is important to pick the product and installer that will result in the best long-term benefits for your situation. Here are some things to consider when choosing a solar company. REPUTATION In a fast-growing industry like solar energy, it’s especially important to know the reputation of the company you’re dealing with. New companies may be showing up in the marketplace, but that doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily offer the best service or be around long enough to support their product line years from now. Look for stability in your solar installer. You’ll want to find a company that has developed a great reputation over a number of years with a long track record of satisfied customers from projects similar in scope to yours. THE SYSTEM There are a wide range of solar panel systems on the market, and the technology itself is going to be a big part of your decision. Your solar system can be tied to the existing electrical grid or completely off the grid, for example, which will require different equipment and setups. No matter what system you decide on, the key thing you’ll be looking for is efficiency, and that means understanding
16 | HOW TO GUIDE
both the energy generated and the cost of doing so. Some solar systems generate power more efficiently than others, depending on their design and the type of materials they’re made from. And price efficiency can matter, too, because you don’t want to find yourself spending a whole lot more money for just a tiny increase in power. Likewise, if a slightly bigger investment can yield a large boost in energy generated, it can make sense to spend the extra money. Look closely at the math, and pick the system that gives you the best return for your money. Many solar systems will pay for themselves over a number of years, so choosing one to be installed by a well-regarded company can be a wise financial move. OTHER SERVICES Homeowners or commercial users will often want more than just solar panels installed. If you think that’s a possibility, you can look for a company that offers a range of services, such as radiant heat systems and solar thermal systems. And if you’re doing new construction that will have solar components, look for a solar company that can also serve as your general contractor. The bigger the project, the more important it is to have the solar systems integrated into the design and construction from start to finish, not added on as an afterthought by a contractor that doesn’t typically incorporate solar elements into their projects. If the company is familiar with construction methods that will increase the structure’s overall efficiency, too, that’s even better.
FINANCING OPTIONS Finally, a good solar company will present you with a wide range of options to help you pay for the upgrades. They should be familiar with all types of government incentive programs and willing to help walk you through the process of getting them. Federal programs are available to consumers who install solar panels on their homes, and additional state and local incentives are sometimes available. Make sure you thoroughly understand all these programs, though, because their requirements can be complex and important to follow exactly. In addition to the help from government programs, there are three ways buyers typically purchase their systems: — Paying cash: The simplest and most direct way of paying for your system, cash buyers may be eligible for a 30 percent tax credit from the federal government along with other rebates that can reduce the installation cost up to 50 percent in total. — Loans: Both home equity loans and unsecured solar loans may be available to help you purchase a solar system. Some solar companies offer loans for up to 20 years, while home equity loans may have the benefit of letting you deduct the interest from your income taxes. — Leases: You may also be able to lease your solar system with no down payment or upfront costs. A solar lease will let you make affordable monthly payments to pay for your system, perhaps even including a performance guarantee and scheduled maintenance services included in the monthly cost.

amily members deserve the best care, particularly as they grow older. A good nursing home facility can help parents, grandparents, siblings or other elderly loved ones live a happy, healthy life. Placing them in a comfortable environment ensures that you have peace of mind knowing that they are receiving good attention and care. There are several factors to consider when picking a care center. Making the right choice means your loved ones will enjoy happiness and longevity. It will also mean less stress for family members. VISIT THE FACILITY Take a tour of the potential facility. You should intuitively feel warmth and safety in this environment. Your visit will also provide clues about the general atmosphere and morale of the residents. There should be lots of natural light, cheerful colors, bright wall art and hints of laughter from the staff and patients. Focus on the cleanliness, staffing levels and the appearance of other residents. Is the air fresh and free from unpleasant odors such as urine, feces and stale food? Are there enough nurses and attendants on duty? Are residents appropriately dressed? Do

they seem clean and freshly bathed? Bring the prospective resident along for the tour. This facility may become home. Your loved one deserves to have a voice in selecting the facility. Feeling welcomed are cues that this could be a positive living experience. Socializing is important. Are there opportunities for residents to meet each other? Regular activities such as music and crafts or an outdoor area for enjoying the sunshine will enhance quality of life. Most nursing home facilities are happy to provide a tour of the building. Once you see the environment, ask for a consultation with a staff member. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions and address special needs of the prospective patient. Possible questions might include availability of physical and occupational therapy, accommodation of patients’ doctors’ appointments outside the facility and access to barbers and beauticians for the residents. TALK WITH OTHERS You might have a chance to talk with a relative of a patient who is currently living in the nursing home. Don’t be afraid of asking them for honest opinions about the facility. Query them about the staff and
quality of care received by the residents. Solicit their input on whether you should place your own loved one in this facility. These relatives are usually eager to share their experiences with you. Hearing their impressions will help ease your own anxieties about this important decision. ASK THE DOCTOR If you are still unsure about your decision, or if you have reservations about the facility, discuss the matter with your loved one’s primary care physician. This professional should also be able to recommend good nursing facilities in your area. The doctor may suggest additional facilities not on your original list. When your loved one has special needs, the doctor will know which facility or center can best meet these requirements. Deciding to put a family member or loved one in a nursing facility is never easy. Carefully weigh the expectations of your family member with your impressions and the recommendations of others. This is one of life’s most difficult decisions. Taking the time and doing the research will result in a better quality of life for your loved one and peace of mind for yourself.

Appliance Stores
How to Choose an Appliance Store F
inding the right appliance at the right price doesn’t have to be a big chore. In fact, shopping for appliances can be fun. These days appliance manufacturers produce items that have every conceivable feature to make your life easier. Exploring these innovations in home appliance technology can be an enjoyable and eye opening experience. Before you start exploring, determine your budget and needs, Know exactly what you need, what you would like to have, and what you can realistically afford. Then go shopping. LOOK ONLINE Before you step outside of the house, do an Internet search for appliance stores in your area. Local stores will be easier to work with and you will likely be able to get your appliance much quicker than if you had to go out of the area, or order it. This is especially important if your refrigerator has stopped working. Many appliance stores offer free delivery. Business review sites will give you a good idea of the service offered by various companies. Do not dismiss the negative reviews but keep in mind that customers who have good experiences are less likely to crow on the Internet. Consumer Reports (www.consumerreports.org) and the Better Business
22 | HOW TO GUIDE
Bureau (www.BBB.org) are also great resources for finding reputable businesses. To qualify for listing on the Better Business Bureau site, the business must be reliable and honest. Many stores also have message boards for customers to leave comments and reviews for the services and the products they sell, which can give you some insight into the business and their products. LOOK FOR ADS Who wants a deal? Well, most of us probably do and one of the best ways to find those awesome deals is to check for advertisements. Deals can be found in your mail, local newspaper or online. Some appliance stores offer specials on certain products. Other stores will use price-matching to stay competitive. Not all stores have policies on price-matching, so be sure to ask first. If you can find a lower advertised price on the exact same product and model elsewhere, many stores will sell you the product for that price. This is called price matching. As always, conduct research on the appliance you need to make sure you are spending money wisely. Not all appliances are the same; just because one manufacturer was excellent two decades ago doesn’t mean the quality will be the same now.
STORE POLICIES Review the store’s policies about warranties and repairs. If the appliance comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, you might not need an additional warranty from the store. Appliances have a yearly sale price cycle. Washers and dryers usually go on sale during the winter. Refrigerators are often discounted in the spring, and stoves and ovens in the fall. If you don’t need it right away, consider shopping seasonally for the best deal. You could also haggle for a price, especially at a local appliance store. Salespeople are typically prepared for this process. If you are too shy or afraid of haggling, ask the store for an extended warranty or free delivery and set-up. It never hurts to ask. They just might give it to you. Consider these questions when you’re looking for an appliance store: do they have a delivery window, warranty options, repair services and range of products? When you have these questions answered, then you can purchase your appliances with confidence.

How to Choose a Tax Professional
A
professional tax preparation service can help you file your quarterly or annual tax returns while also navigating increasingly complicated tax codes. Reliable tax preparer can also save you time and money while helping you avoid errors that get you in trouble with the IRS.. But finding experienced and responsible tax professionals requires research. The IRS urges caution in picking a tax preparation service because the use of the service does not absolve you of problems stemming from an incorrect tax return. There are many tax preparers who are honest. They provide excellent service to their clients. Others, unfortunately, are less than scrupulous. They cause their clients legal and financial nightmares. As of 2011, the IRS requires professional tax preparers to register, pass a competency test and meet continuing education requirements. This government agency also licenses its own Enrolled Agents who must meet the same standards. The Treasury Department authorizes these Enrolled Agents to aid taxpayers at all levels of an audit. Before hiring a tax preparer, verify that they will represent you if you

are audited by the IRS. Ask about the preparer’s audit rate. The person you are hiring must specialize in tax preparation. A certified public account might not be a tax specialist, and is no guarantee you will not be audited. The federal tax code changes every year. It is a challenge for tax professionals to stay current with the changes. A CPA specializing in taxation should have documentations of any continuing education classes completed in the past year. It is important to check on your preparer’s as well as the firm’s credentials. The Better Business Bureau will inform you if they have dubious reputations. For more verification, contact your state’s board of accountancy or your state bar association’s tax lawyers to research a preparer’s professional record. A legitimate and reputable professional tax preparer should have: • A relationship with an organization requiring continuing education • A fee schedule based on the complexity of your return • The willingness and ability to answer all of your questions • Availability extending beyond the preparation and filing of

Warning signs of a disreputable tax preparer may include: Claims that they can obtain larger refunds than their competitors Guarantees of a refund up front A request for your signature on a blank tax form An unwillingness to sign a return, known as “ghost” preparation. The best tax professional has a proven track record of competence, a stellar reputation and an attitude of respect for his clients. It is your financial and legal status at stake. The preparer should be ready and able to stand behind his work and beside you if you ever need to appear for an audit.

Garage Doors
How to Choose Garage Doors
G
arage doors add an elegant or classy look to your home. They can add a huge wow factor to your home. If your garage faces the front of the house, a new door could dramatically improve your curb appeal and change the overall look of your home. And even if it’s facing the back, a good-looking door can be the perfect “welcome home” sign after a long day at work. Garage doors are also important for another key reason: security. If you’re thinking about installing a new garage door, you may be surprised at just how many options are on the market — and how affordably they can be installed.
different doors would look like — complete with color and material samples, and perhaps even software that will show a picture of what your home would look like. You should also pay close attention to the materials. Today’s garage doors can be made from expensive hardwoods, textured vinyl, fiberglass or basic aluminum, all of which will have a big impact on the look and longevity of your door. Pay close attention to the maintenance needs of whatever material you choose. Some will hold their color longer than others, and real wood doors can require regular staining and sealing every few years to keep them looking spectacular.
THE LOOK Simple sheet metal garage doors are still on the market, but they’re only a tiny slice of all the options available that can impact the look and safety of your home. In fact, garage doors have seen an explosion in styles, materials and colors that are designed to match the architecture of any home, from rural barns to craftsman bungalows or sleek urban getaways. While you may already have an idea of the exact type of garage door you want to see installed, some homeowners seek the advice of a designer to help make the decision to pick the right style and color combination. Some garage door retailers will be able to help you visualize what the
INSULATION Depending on your climate, the insulation of your garage door can be an important factor to help reduce your energy bills. Just like windows and insulation in your attic, garage doors come with an “R factor” rating that tells you how well they insulate your home from outside temperatures. This is especially important in heated garages. But even an insulated door on unheated garages can make a positive impact on your energy usage if it can keep the hot and cold weather away from the interior of your house. In general, the higher the “R value,” the better off you’ll be. It is a good idea to pay attention to this in extreme climates.
26 | HOW TO GUIDE
LOCAL REQUIREMENTS Before you make the purchase, you should also check to see if your city, county or homeowner’s association has any special requirements for garage doors. Homeowner’s associations, in particular, may have very picky requirements about what materials and styles can be used in your neighborhood. Make sure your choice meets with the approval of any local authorities or boards that control their use. SAFETY A garage door is typically the largest moving object installed in any home, and safety should be a consideration. Ask your garage door retailer about any special safety features on the door you select. It should have a design that won’t pinch your fingers or hurt small children if they get caught under it. Make sure it will be installed according to all applicable safety codes in your area. OPENER Finally, when you install a new garage door it’s usually a good idea to install a new opener, too. Make sure you factor this into the cost and explore all your options — including the latest models that can be closed remotely via smartphones and operate very quietly and efficiently.

HVAC Companies
How to Choose an HVAC Company
A
qualified professional can help prolong the life of your HVAC system. HVAC professionals prevent equipment failure by routinely servicing and maintaining your system. The breakdown of your heating or air conditioning system can be a huge nightmare - particularly during times of extreme temperature. But even in moderate weather, the HVAC system in your home is important to your comfort and safety. Most people cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. The elderly and people with chronic health problems need to have the temperature stabilized in their homes. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Ask people in your social network for recommendations. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. After creating a list of candidates, call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many complaints on their
28 | HOW TO GUIDE
record. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet
or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. Before any work begins, verify that all the required building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office. But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will help you for years to come.

HOW TO
Funeral Homes
How to Choose a Funeral Home
L
ooking to make funeral arrangements for you or your loved ones? For most people, that is an unpleasant thought. But planning ahead while you have a clear mind and are not in crisis mode can help you sail through that difficult time when it does come. Since most people don’t have much experience with planning funerals, they are hit with sticker shocker when they visit funeral homes. Not only can funerals be expensive, prices can also vary widely. Planning before your time of grief will help you make wise decisions under difficult circumstances. Here are some things to consider when selecting a funeral home. The first step is to find out if the deceased has made any funeral arrangements and whether these plans need to be changed. Sometimes weather may be an issue or other factors may get in the way of what has already been planned. If no arrangements were made, ask family and friends to see if the deceased made any specific wishes. If possible, respect those wishes. If pre-arrangements with a local company exist, then contact that company. Arrangements bought years ago may not cover the cost of the funeral or represent the latest wishes of the

deceased. If you are in this situation, Do not decide on a funeral home look around to see if another funer- right away. Think about it for a bit. al home has a better arrangement, or The decision should be made with make adjustments as necessary. clarity. To find the right funeral home, ask family, friends and pastors for a recommendation. It is a good way to focus on funeral homes with excellent reputations. You might also consider your own experiences at funeral homes in your city. If you cannot get referrals, look on the Internet. Select three or four funeral homes that might fit your needs. Visit each one with a close friend or relative. Budget is a major concern for most people. Inquire about basic fees. Ask about services the funeral home may offer and if payment arrangements can be made. Ask questions and take notes. Staff members should be patient with you. It is important to get written estimates for everything. Ask about hours for viewing, in-house versus off-site services, cremation services, additional fees and special requests. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide customers with a price list. If you believe the casket prices are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges.
After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director can help you with the required forms and permits. You should have a copy of the death certificates and make the actual burial or cremation arrangements. When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don’t need or can’t afford. Stay within your budget. Talk to the funeral home and tell them who in the deceased’s family is authorized to make decisions. Be very detailed about your expectations and what kind of arrangements you want. Tell them if something is not being done according to your intentions. Good funeral homes will guide you through the process to ensure that the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. In your time of grief and hardship, preplanning can give you a small measure of comfort and peace.

HOW TO
Propane Company
How to Choose a Propane Company
P
ropane can be a great alternative to electricity. When the power flickers, you will be glad you chose to use propane. People in rural areas use propane for home heating and cooking. Propane is particularly popular in areas that lack access to natural gas lines. A quality supplier can guide you through the process of using propane. He will sell the fuel at a reasonable price and provide service and repairs. Follow these tips to help you select the best propane provider in your area. RELIABILITY Regular customers to any business often get better service. Establish a good relationship with your supplier, particularly if you heat your entire home with propane. The best companies will work hard to develop a strong relationship with you as well. They will treat you with respect. Buy tanks from a reputable company that sells high-quality products. The company should also provide service for the tanks they sell. If you use a propane-fueled barbecue grill, exchange your empty tank at an authorized propane dealer for the best service. Bringing your tank to a convenience store or big-box retailer may not give you the best value for your money.
32 | HOW TO GUIDE
PRICE Purchase the best quality tank you can afford. It will last longer than a cheaper one, and you won’t have to worry about leakage. High-quality tanks are made with heavier metal, so they are built to last. Their valves and hoses are not prone to breakage. A high-quality dealer will replace a faulty tank without question. Also ask about ways to save money on propane. A regular delivery schedule may come with price breaks. Locking in an annual price will help you avoid price fluctuations. PROPER STANDARDS Propane companies are subject to government requirements and standards. When you visit the office, look for certifications and licenses that should be displayed prominently. If they are not posted, request to see them. Salespeople are also licensed by the government. They should be happy to show you their licensing and certification for your state. Remember that you are protecting your family, life and property by asking for verification. Any reputable dealer will be more than happy to show their documentation to you. BACKGROUND Before doing business with any
propane company, check their safety and customer service record. State public service commission’s usually oversee propane supplies. Speaking to them can be quite informative. The Better Business Bureau is the best source for information on customer service complaints. Avoid a company with too many safety infractions and too many dissatisfied customers. However you should not discount a company that has responded to complaints and resolved issues. Family, friends and neighbors are also great sources of information about propane dealers in your community. Ask them about their experiences. Most propane dealers are safe, honest and highly reputable. Time and research will determine which dealer is a good fit for you. Once you have selected the best dealer in your community, work to establish a relationship with them. Having a friend in the business is a very good thing on a cold winter’s night.

HOW TO
Estate Planning
How To Navigate Estate Planning
E
state planning for too many people is a mystery or something they don’t believe they need. As laws change, the need for professional guidance has never been greater. Who needs Estate Planning? Everyone! Even those with minimal material wealth need an Estate Plan that includes a Health Care Directive (HCD), Power of Attorney (POA) and a Will. It doesn’t have to be expensive; low income people can obtain these at little or no cost. Many people discuss the need for their Estate Plans, but never follow through as talking about the end of life can be uncomfortable. But, leaving these difficult decisions to someone else after our death is cruel and costly in many ways. Estate Planning is much more than just Trusts and Probate. Think of an Estate Plan as similar to a road map. It provides comfort, directions and cost savings to your heirs. Comfort in that they know what your wishes are. Directions on how to get there. And, and Estate Plan can save costly probate and attorney fees.
34 | HOW TO GUIDE
HOW TO START? First: Meet with a qualified Wealth Manager Consultant to discuss your family’s needs and goals. Be sure to bring financial and tax documents to your meeting. This will allow for a complete evaluation. You can research online ways to cut costs, however this leads many to self-determine that they do not need to have a formal plan in place. The lack of a formal plan could also lead to decisions that are not in your best health or financial interest. A professional consultant can guide you through the maze of your specific needs. Doing this first can save you time (AKA money) with attorneys, insurance agents or financial stock brokers; as each of these typically have a direct conflict of interest. Trust: Many people believe they need or don’t need a living trust based on opinions that don’t apply to them. Trusts are typically needed to protect assets from costly probate proceedings and high estate taxes. You may or may not need a trust, but everyone should have a Will, POA and HCD. BUSINESS: Frequently, business owners plan their retirement through the business. They do not realize the
complications of getting retirement assets out of their business if it needs to be handed off or sold. Family business hand-offs succeed less than 30% of the time. A plan needs to be developed early on to prevent business succession failure. PROPERTY: Family farms and ranches pose the greatest challenge in Estate Planning. Many roadblocks are present that doom generational success in farming. Most of these roadblocks can be prevented and planned around. To do so, consult with a Wealth Manager Consultant with an agricultural background. It is critical that you work with a professional who understands your situation and has the experience to put your wishes into a viable plan. PLAN: No two Estate Plans are the same. Take time to meet with and interview a Wealth Manager Consultant. Ask questions to determine their understanding of your specific needs and ability of helping you reach your goals. Finding the right professional or professionals is key to navigating your way to a plan that fulfills your wishes and can be followed by those left behind.

How to Choose a Furniture Store
L
ooking to update your home decor? Where you shop can make all the difference. Updating your home furnishings is one of the best investments to keep your home inviting and appealing to yourself and family. If you compare the costs of moving to a new home or even construction costs of remodeling just one room, you will find that you may be able to refurnish most or all of your existing home! The first thing to do is prioritize what is most important to you. Do you enjoy changing your furniture styles often or do you want to keep it for years? How active is your family? Our kids, pets, and husbands can wear out lower quality furniture quickly. How important is comfort and cleanability to you? The answers to some of these questions will help you determine what styles may be more suitable for you and your family. If you change your furniture often, go ahead and get the latest trends. Rose gold and copper metal finishes are trending now. Greys and driftwoods are all popular finishes currently. If you keep your furniture a while, you may want to get a classic or conservative style that you will be happy with for years. Light to medium and cherry wood finishes have stood the test of time.
36 | HOW TO GUIDE
If your family is active, Rustic style furniture is difficult to mar and has a relaxed look to it. If you would like better quality furniture but your budget may not allow it, would you be willing to finance your purchase with one of the many low interest or interest free offers many stores may offer? Do you want to customize your furniture to make it uniquely yours? Some furniture items can be made to order but understand it will cost more and take 6-12 weeks or more to make. After establishing what your priorities are, the next step is to research the many choices you have. The internet has a wealth of information to quickly access. A word of caution though, the online world can be overwhelming! Use online search for a starting point to understand what local stores you will want to visit. When you know your preferences, start searching for a store that matches your sensibility. Many stores cater to certain price points, while others focus on specific styles. Visit the local stores’ website to get an idea of what styles and price ranges they offer. After you find several stores that look promising, do yourself a big favor and check their online reputation. Furniture is easily damaged in shipping and usually
needs some sort of assembly where parts may be missing. Yelp and Google are the popular ways to check how a store actually provides service during the sale and after. Check to see if the store offers delivery service. This is especially important if you don’t have transportation to get those wonderful pieces home. Also ask about warranties and any specials for buying a set of furniture or a room of furniture. With the right amount of investigative research, you will be able to find a great local furniture store that can provide all the pieces of furniture you’re looking for.

HOW TO
Weight Loss
How to Choose a Successful Weight Loss Program
H
ave you been thinking of losing unwanted weight? Diets, pills, supplements and programs that promise to help, are advertised everywhere, so what should you look for when choosing a program that would work for you? Start by assessing your personal goals. Are you wanting to reduce weight, lose inches or simply improve your health?
WHAT IS A HEALTHY WEIGHT FOR ME?
Before starting any weight loss journey, it is important to know where you are going. Look for a center that provides an adequate body composition. This would include weight, body mass index, fat percentage, fat-free mass, and hydration level. With that information, an experienced weight loss consultant will determine what a healthy weight for you would be based on your age, height and lifestyle. Also, they would set realistic goals that are attainable and help you see what’s possible.
WHAT KIND OF NUTRITIONAL PLAN DO YOU OFFER?
Let’s face it; you have to address your eating habits when wanting to lose weight. However, some would just say “drink this in place of your meals” or “here’s a shot to suppress your appetite” and the list could go on and on. A healthy program would address your macronutrient balance, which includes proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Look for a plan that offers a balance with ALL food groups. By balancing your proteins, veggies, fruits, starches, fats and dairy through the day you have more control over hunger and will find an increase in your metabolism and energy. A healthy nutrition program should
38 | HOW TO GUIDE
also offer a plan that works with your lifestyle. Whether you start your day early or work through the night, your consultant should be able to design a plan that fits your individual schedule and needs. WHAT ROLE WOULD EXERCISE PLAY IN MY JOURNEY?
Exercise has been known to assist in the weight loss process, plus offers multiple health benefits. Benefits of exercise would include reducing risk of heart disease, lowering blood pressure, improves your mood and memory, boosts your energy, and promotes better sleep. However, with the calories in, calories out mentality we’ve seen those who would do excessive workouts to compensate for excessive eating. This fails to work in any sustainable way and brings only frustration, stress and anxiety. A better approach to exercise is to find body movement that you find enjoyable. For some it may mean dancing, hiking, swimming, yoga etc. Whatever you choose as your exercise, make sure to include strength training. By working all your muscle groups, you can improve your metabolism, maintain your muscle mass, as well as firm & tone areas of concern. Look for a place you feel comfortable going to. Try out your options and see which the best fit is for you and your time availability. Thirty minutes three times per week is a recommended amount for your health and wellbeing.
WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT DO YOU OFFER?
Having support is crucial to any changes we are making in our lives. Studies have shown that accountability improves one’s success rate. So look for a program that offers one-on-one support
on a weekly basis. And a program offering a nutritional journal with complete food choices and serving sizes takes all the guess work out and gives you a track to run on. Also, programs that helps with menu planning and provides healthy food tips is a plus. Inquire on how often you would be monitored for your results. Body compositions, weigh-ins and measurements should be taken on a regular basis allowing you to track your results on a consistent basis. WHAT RESULTS DO YOU HAVE WITH THIS PROGRAM?
Many products and programs make many claims. Look for a program that has real results from real people within your area. You want a program that has proven success stories showing not only weight reduction but also inch loss. Weight loss should be slow and steady to be sustainable. So any program or product that sounds too good to be true, usually is. A program that allows for 2 – 3pounds of weight loss each week is sensible. The goal in weight loss is to reduce body fat while maintaining muscle. This allows you to reshape your body to a size you’re a comfortable with.
IS IT ALL UNDER ONE ROOF?
With all the components necessary to achieve total success, it is beneficial to look for a center that provides all of the above under one roof; sensible nutrition, on site exercise, one on one support and proven success.
LIVE HEALTHY AND LOVE LIFE! Slow your natural aging process. Feel youthful and vibrant. Lower your risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Lose inches of body fat and manage your weight. Increase muscle tone and bone density. Reduce stress and increase energy. Esther C. - I came to Healthy Inspirations, overweight, stressed, in chronic pain and depressed! aking your pet to the vet regularly can save its life. For one thing, you can catch an illness in its early stages. And catching a disease early could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Most people think of their pets as members of their family. In fact, some people even refer to them as fur children. That’s why finding a veterinarian or veterinary clinic is so important. You need to find qualified care to ensure the long-term health of your pet. But in a difficult economy, pet care might get overlooked. Routine care might even seem unnecessary. After all, do humans skip medical and dental check-ups if they seem like they’re in good shape? Unfortunately, pets age faster than human beings. Their bodies and internal systems can change rapidly, sometimes in a matter of a few months. Routine veterinary care will help your pet to live a longer and happy life. Energy Healing
How To Use Energy Healing To Improve Your Health
E
nergy healing is probably the first form of health care ever utilized. Every parent has used this method instinctively when he or she has placed a loving hand on a child to reduce discomfort, help heal a wound, or alleviate a fever. The healer doesn’t heal; he or she facilitates a process that is active and implicit within all of us. This power can help people overcome sickness, negative beliefs, and old and useless habits. It can heal wounds, reduce pain, boost energy, improve psychological health, and help to manage and heal chronic illness. Energy healing has been used as an alternative treatment technique in virtually every traditional culture. Today scientific studies consistently prove its power to heal, though researchers still don’t understand how or why the practice works. Reiki is a common method used throughout the world. The most common form of reiki practiced in the United Stated originated in Japan. It requires a practitioner to attend three levels of classes, to learn the techniques. Integrated energy therapy ® (IET) uses a divine angelic energy which supports you in safely and gently releasing limiting energy patterns of your past, empowering and balancing your life in the present, and helps you

to reach for the stars as you evolve into your future. Healing touch and theraputic touch developed by nurses is used in many hospitals in the United States. The learning of these techniques is available to anyone. Crystal healing has been available since the beginning of recorded time. Crystals and stones have minerals and energy that our body can use to heal itself. Crystals and stones are placed on the body while you are fully clothed and you quickly feel the energy flowing through you. Massage consists of using gentle pressure on the body to help release spasms and blockages. The purpose of all energy healing it to remove energy that has become blocked in the body because of emotional or physical trauma or continual stress, including negative thoughts and conflicts in what we think and what we say and what we feel and how we act. Whatever the name, the flowing of a universal life force from the creator of the universe to each living thing is seen as the basis of physical, psychological and spiritual health in virtually every traditional culture. Your body is infused with this life force. It surrounds and permeates every cell, organ and sense. It is like a great ball of energy within which your body re-
sides. As long as the life force flows freely through the body, all the organs, systems and senses function optimally. Illness is caused by a diminution in the flow of the life force. Without a free flow of life energy, organs function at lower rates of efficiency. Blood and lymph flows stagnate, waste accumulates, and illnesses manifest themselves. The healer attempts to strengthen the flow when it is weak and to balance or modulate it if it is too strong. Restored to its natural flow, the life force will assist the body’s natural healing functions to restore health. Energy healing can be used on adults, children and animals help to bring balance and harmony to the body. Once you experience it, you will understand how it works for you.

Recreational Vehicles
How to Choose an RV
R
ecreational vehicles are like houses on wheels. They are more complicated and much more sophisticated than regular automobiles. They are great for fun and vacations but they are a huge investment. And investing in one is a lot more complicated than buying in a car. After talking with a dealer, many first-timers sometimes end up with more questions than answers. With some research and help from other RV owners, you can find an RV that is right for you. Your first step in purchasing an RV is to ask yourself what you would like to do in your recreational vehicle. Are you using it to travel the country? What sizes and styles do you prefer? Are you partial to purchasing a new or used RV? Consult resources to answer these questions. Use the Internet to browse RV brands and styles. There are numerous message boards for RV owners that contain useful information. The best way to learn about recreational vehicles is to speak with owners themselves. If people in your social network own an RV, ask about
44 | HOW TO GUIDE
their vehicle. Look through the interior; examine various options so you can understand what is available. Another factor is size. If you are only planning to use it sporadically, then size might not be an issue. But if you plan on living out of the vehicle for extended periods of time, then a larger RV may be more comfortable. Some RV parks have restrictions on size, so be sure to verify what sizes are generally acceptable. Additional features can make your ride enjoyable. Think about whether you would like a full-service kitchen or plasma TV. Choose items that would make your trip as comfortable as possible. Once you have become more acquainted with the marketplace, start visiting RV dealers. After all your research, you should be able to speak with the salespeople clearly and confidently. If you plan on purchasing a new RV, look for a dealer who offers a factory warranty. Dealers who sell used RVs should also give you a factory warranty along with a used vehicle report. Potential RV buyers don’t usually
think to ask for a used vehicle report. However, you should know the history of your used RV before purchasing it, as it could have had extensive damage. Incentives such as free upgrades or a good financing rate may be enticing, but you should always be skeptical about the deal that comes with them. Try to bring a fellow RV owner with you to the dealership. Most people are happy to share their thoughts and experiences with you. It is a good way to ensure you are getting a fair deal. The best dealers have an on-site service department or contracts with reputable RV repair shops. Some RV repairs are specialized and different from regular vehicles. You will need a service shop that will accept your warranty in the event your RV is ever damaged. With a little effort and time, you will find a fantastic deal on an RV best suited for your needs. Then, you can spend time in your vehicle enjoying the scenery.

Tree Trimming
How to Choose a Tree Service
T
rimming back trees and removing broken limbs on your property is a smart proactive move. It can save you time and trouble. But this kind of work can be dangerous. The right tree services company can do it safely and effectively. Tree services can help you deal with sick or overgrown trees. They might even be able to save injured trees with pest infestations. Follow these tips to find a qualified, professional tree service in your area: 1. Ask friends, family and neighbors. You may know someone who has used a tree service in the past. They can tell you who does the best work. Also, check newspaper, phone and Internet listings. 2. Contact at least three tree services. Inform them of the situation and request a site inspection. It gives you the opportunity to ask about issues and get a feel for the experience and expertise of each company. Take notes so you can compare your results afterward. 3. Find out how long each compa-

ny has been in business, their experiences, references and whether they are licensed and insured. Check with the Better Business Bureau for outstanding complaints. Even reliable companies may have a few problems. It is how they resolve the issue that counts. 4. Request estimates. These figures can vary widely. Some companies are better equipped for certain jobs, so they can offer more competitive pricing. Other companies are slow or may be trying to “fill in” appointment slots with smaller jobs just to keep their crews busy. Don’t choose a company strictly by cost. Tree work is dangerous. Proper equipment, well-trained employees and insurance create high operating costs. It is worth paying more for peace of mind and excellent service. 5. Look at a copy of their insurance policy. Coverage should include personal liability, property damage coverage, workers’ compensation and damaged vehicles or home coverage. 6. Inspect their previous work by looking at their portfolio. Each tree service company has a work style. Verify that it suits your needs. Photos
of past work might also be on their website. 7. Get a detailed written estimate of any work to be performed before signing a contract. Responsible companies will provide detailed descriptions, along with the time and cost for your records. This estimate should also offer information about cleanup expectations. Are logs to be cut up or left for firewood? Will the company haul everything away or leave it for you to manage? Will leaves and twigs be raked up or run through a chipper? If they are removing an entire tree, what will happen to the stump? 8. Verify the workers wear property safety gear. They should be wearing helmets at all times. In addition, they should use face shields or protective glasses and steel-toe boots. The person who climbs the tree should have arborist climbing ropes, specialized safety and climbing gear, the proper saddle, helmet and safety glasses. If you find they aren’t wearing safety gear, contact the company to discuss the matter.

Rain Gutters
How to Choose Gutters for Your Home
G
utters do more than simply collect leaves and debris. They are responsible for keeping rain water away from the foundation of your home. Standing water will cause severe damage to the exterior and interior of your house. A quality gutter system can divert water away from the foundation. Installing and maintaining this system will save your home from needless structural damage. Gutters consist of several types of materials, including steel, aluminum or copper. The materials you choose will depend on your budget and personal preference. Prior to shopping for gutters, inspect your home after a heavy rainstorm. Look at how rain runs from, or toward, the structure. Once you have determined the flow of water on your property, you can figure out how to position your gutters for optimal effect. Your observations will also help you choose which gutter materials are best suited for your needs. Each material has advantages and disadvantages, so examine each choice carefully before making a final decision.
mon type. Chances are, you already have this type of gutter installed on your home. Its strong material makes it an ideal choice. Steel can withstand a variety of extreme weather conditions that would be detrimental to the materials. One of the big disadvantages of this material is its tendency to rust. Without proper maintenance, steel gutters will look unsightly. They will also become porous and ineffective. Special sprays and applications will prevent rust. With regular maintenance, steel gutters will last for many years.
COPPER GUTTERS When you want your home to have a stylish, attractive appearance, install copper gutters. Copper gutters can carry water better than the more traditional steel option. They are also very strong. However, copper gutters can be expensive. They require regular work to maintain their color and luster. If left untreated, the material can dull with age, turning green and brown. But it will not destroy STEEL GUTTERS the integrity of the gutter. Steel gutters are the most comIf you prefer your gutters re-

main shiny and gold, proper maintenance is necessary. ALUMINUM GUTTERS The most inexpensive and lightweight choice is aluminum gutters. Do-it-yourselfers choose this type because they are so easy to install. Aluminum sometimes has difficulty standing up against the elements. The material is fairly weak. If you live in a climate that includes snow, ice, damaging winds or strong hail storms, your gutters will probably only last in the short term. Of course, there other considerations besides materials. Budget, average weather conditions, maintenance work and personal taste will all factor into your decision. Budget-conscious people might select aluminum gutters. People who care about aesthetics will likely opt for copper gutters. Homeowners who prefer longevity should pick steel gutters. Shop around for the best quality gutter system you can afford. If you are planning to use a professional for installation, gather reviews and opinions to ensure you receive excellent, quality service.

How to Choose an Urgent Care Center
W
hen your physician is unavailable or you need rapid medical attention, your local urgent care center can assist you. In some cases, urgent care centers work better than the emergency room at your local hospital. Health problems happen at inconvenient times. You may not have time to ask about various facilities in your area. Now is the time to find the best urgent care center that will help you in your hour of need. Here are some factors to consider when selecting an urgent care center. You will need a center located near your home. Time is of the essence. You will also need to understand the level of care they provide, hours of operation and insurance plans they accept. Find out about your town’s urgent care centers before you need medical assistance. Check the Yellow Pages, your local newspaper or the Internet. People who live in cities probably have several choices within a short distance. But if you live in a rural area, there might be only one option. Look closely at what the center can offer you. Sometimes, rural residents
50 | HOW TO GUIDE
can get better care at an emergency room. Anyone with children should select an urgent care facility with a doctor who is qualified to treat children. He or she must also be comfortable around them. An urgent care center is an excellent backup for the times you can’t see your general practitioner. The best facilities are open 24-hours a day, seven days a week. At the very least, they have extended hours. Most centers have the equipment to contend with colds, flu, strep throat or an ear infection. They could also help you regain control of your blood pressure. Urgent care providers are typically good at treating simple fractures and stitching wounds. When they don’t have the resources to treat an urgent medical issue, the center will transport a patient to an emergency facility in an ambulance. The urgent care staff will work to stabilize a patient while they wait for transport. Handling payment arrangements is your responsibility. You must know if your insurance covers the doctors in the facility. If you don’t have in-
surance, flexible payment plans can usually be arranged. Most facilities also accept credit cards, checks and cash as payment. Patients at urgent care clinics usually have good experiences. They appreciate the short wait times. It is especially helpful when you are sick and can’t see your regular physician. You don’t want to sit in a waiting room all day, nor do you want to suffer for days while waiting for an appointment. At an urgent care facility you can see a doctor, get a prescription and go home to recuperate quickly. In addition to their regular services, many centers are now offering preventive services such as immunizations. Others can assist you in managing chronic problems. Diabetics can often find quick, quality care at an urgent care center. While these facilities can’t solve all of your medical problems, they are an excellent option when you can’t see your regular physician.

HOW TO
Healthy Foods
How to Choose Healthy Foods
A
healthy, balanced diet is the foundation for living a long life. Don’t ever underestimate the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet. You only have one body, so it’s important to treat it right. Doing so means loading it with the right fuel to keep it running smoothly. Many Americans enjoy the convenience of fast food and instant meals. But they are slowly learning that these processed foods have little or no nutritional value. Worse, these foods often leave them craving unhealthy snacks. Home-cooked meals are good for your body and pocketbook. They are cheaper, more satisfying to your taste buds and better for your health. Whether you are preparing vegetables, roasts or an appetizing main course, find a local grocer who stocks only the best products. FRESHNESS Depending on where the food has been grown, produce may be refrigerated and stored for long period before it arrives at a store. This delay can impact the texture and taste. That’s why it is always best to purchase fruits and vegetables that are harvested before
52 | HOW TO GUIDE
they ripen. Look for foods that are naturally in season, such as apples in the fall or tomatoes in the summer. When buying other items, such as meat, find a store that offers the quickest path from the farm to your dinner table. Beef, poultry and seafood are best when they are fresh. LOCAL It is best to purchase food grown near your home. Buying locally sourced food will help your city’s economy; it is also better for the environment. Food shipped across the country generates carbon emissions. You will pay more for the food because fuel and other costs must be included in the price. It also means that produce must be picked before it has properly ripened. Grocery stores that stock locally-grown food are proud of this fact. They are actively supporting their communities. NATURAL Organic foods are a popular commodity. People want foods that are grown without harsh chemicals and pesticides. Studies have found that organic foods are a good choice for health-conscious consumers.
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides dull the flavor of produce. Organic foods simply taste better. Some people think that organic foods are more expensive, but smart shoppers know that you can find organic foods that are affordable and convenient. People who want to find healthier options for meat should find grocers who sell beef and other fare without unnatural hormones. EXPERT ADVICE Look for trustworthy information. There is no shortage of advice, but information is only as reliable as its source. The finest grocery stores have registered nutritionists and other experts on staff. These professionals will help you make wise eating choices. You can also find reliable diet advice and the most up-to-date tips. You may also ask produce managers for their personal recommendations. Quality stores will gladly extend a hand to help you find the best deals. For many shoppers, service with a smile is more important than anything they can find on the shelves.

HOW TO
Auctioneer
How to Choose an Auctioneer Sold! If you’ve ever held an auction, that word is music to your ears. And if you want to hear that word each time you hold an auction, you’ve got to hire a good auctioneer. The right auctioneer can be the key to helping you meet your financial goals if you are liquidating a business, selling off an estate or raising money for a good cause. Auctions can be mutually beneficial for participants and the host. And they are a great way to make a profit. But you’ve got to pick the right auctioneer. Here are a few things to keep in mind when searching for an auctioneer. Auctioneers are specialists, so you want to be sure find the right one to fit your needs. For example, if you’re having an estate sell with a loved one’s valuables and antiques, you probably wouldn’t get the best results with a commercial or business auctioneer. Many auctions are personality-driven events, so be sure you select an auctioneer who is gregarious and personable. This person must have the gift of speech, a touch of humor
54 | HOW TO GUIDE
and the ability to develop a rapport with the audience. The success of your auction will depend on how much the auctioneer can establish a relationship with the audience. The auctioneer will show your products off in the best light and entice participants to bid. If they have been in business for a while, they will likely have a following that will come to your auction just because of the auctioneer’s reputation. Look for an auctioneer at your local auction house. The best auctioneers are independent contractors with well honed skills and years of experience getting results for clients. You can also utilize the Internet or your local newspaper to find a qualified auctioneer. Most newspapers have an auction section in their advertising section. If you use the Internet, be sure to visit the website of a certified institution. Not every site lists credentialed auctioneers. If you’ve exhausted these sources, contact the National Auctioneers Association or visit its website at www. auctioneers.org. Many auctioneers belong to professional organizations such as the Certified Auctioneers In-
stitute or CAI. Auctioneers with this certification are held to a higher standard of integrity. Sometimes a well-known person can also draw people to your event. Your potential auctioneer should undergo some training in the overall auction process. There are often logistics that must be explained beforehand. When speaking to candidates, be sure to ask for references and work history. Verify licensing and check that they are actively working auction events. Once you have a list of finalists, attend an auction and watch them perform. Pay attention to how they handle attendees and the pacing of the event. Take notes on each auctioneer. Once you have narrowed your list to one or two candidates, perform a background check and obtain reliable references. Then sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Know that your goods will be professionally described and displayed, and will go to a good home. The auctioneer you choose will make sure of this.

ere’s a little known fact about pawn shops: they are more than just places to sell your things when money is tight. They are also great for finding excellent deals. Pawn shops provide fast cash for people with emergency financial needs while offering quality merchandise at a great price For bargain hunters with eclectic tastes, pawn shops are great alternatives to classified ads and garage sales. You will find electronics, jewelry and sometimes even firearms at below retail rates. Here are some factors to consider when looking for a pawn shop. HOW TO
Day Care
How to Choose the Best Daycare I f selecting a daycare for your child seems so daunting, that’s because it is. After all, you wouldn’t trust just anyone with your child, would you? But with so many daycares to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you and your little ones? Choosing a place where you’ll feel comfortable leaving your child is important. Daycares can vary widely in terms of professionalism and quality, so it is important that you research each place you are considering. Making on-site visits will tell you plenty about the quality of the facility. Schedule an appointment with the director so you can ask questions. Have your children accompany you on this trip so you can see how they will react to this environment. Observe your child and gauge his or her comfort level. Here are other factors to consider when choosing a daycare.
STAFF The quality of a daycare rests on its employees. The staff must be reliable and responsible. Request information on background checks of the staff. Ask about the ratio of caregivers to children. Adults cannot do their jobs effectively if they have to care for 30 children at once with no extra assistance. Good hygiene habits are a must. Sickness is easily spread among children and adults at a daycare. What types of hygiene and protocol do they have and use when dealing with germs or sick children? Observe how the employees interact with children. They should communicate well and like kids. The best daycare employees do not

play favorites. They spend equal time with everyone and make every child feel important. BUILDING The facility should be in a safe and inviting environment. It should have bright colors and fun decor. The lighting needs to be adequate. Inspect the bathrooms, dining areas and nap rooms. Everything should be decorated with children in mind. Look outside at the play areas. Are they well-maintained? Is there plenty of room for children to run around? Are the play equipment safe? Every area should be designed with safety in mind. Look for locks on doors, sharp edges and dangerous objects that might be in a child’s reach. ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVITIES No child should be bored at a daycare. High-quality daycares offer activities to keep your child preoccupied throughout the day. Make sure they don’t only offer fun activities – it should be a learning center as well. A center that incorporates fun into learning is the best type of daycare. Ask the director what kinds of activities are available for children. It should be a mixture of free play and structured activities. Crafts, music, stories and age-appropriate lessons will help your child grow. DISCIPLINE Discipline is important, but how is discipline administered. Ask the daycare how they deal with specific discipline issues. What are the consequences for undesirable behavior?
Also, if your child has difficulties with sharing, talk to them about how they might handle it. They should give you thoughtful answers. Ask for a copy of the daycare’s rules. OTHER QUESTIONS The daycare should have a stringent sickness policy. It will protect your child from catching viruses frequently. You don’t want to pay for a month of daycare only to have the child stay home because of illness. The daycare should ask for a copy of the child’s vaccination records. Throughout your visit, look to see if your child seems genuinely interested and comfortable. How does he or she interact with the other children? If your child is shy, see how the teachers get timid kids to engage with others. Observe how your child interacts with the teachers. How do they address your child during the visit? Does the daycare have toys and activities that interest him or her? If your child is of speaking age, you can ask directly for his opinion of the daycare. Selecting a daycare is an important decision. Look at each option thoroughly before making a final decision. Follow your gut instinct. If you feel something is wrong at a particular facility, don’t be afraid of crossing them off your list. You can find another daycare that is more comfortable for you and your child. With a bit of close observation and intuition, you should have no trouble finding a suitable daycare for your child.

HOW TO
Summer Camp
How to Choose a Summer Camp S
ummer camps are great for kids. They can make new friends and take part in activities, such as hiking, swimming or telling stories. Parents can also get some alone time. When looking for a summer camp, here are a few things to keep in mind. COED OR SAME-SEX The first aspect to consider is whether you want your child to attend a coed or same-sex camp. There are advantages to both choices. Coed camps allow boys and girls to socialize together, which may concern some parents. But coed camps usually have strict rules and supervision. They separate the boys and the girls for certain activities and housing. Single sex camps can allow kids to develop confidence and self-esteem. They also eliminate the possibility of distractions and the rigidity of gender stereotypes.
EDUCATION Many camps focus on educational activities, such as music, drama or science. Think about your child’s interests. You may want him to focus on certain activities, especially if he needs additional tutoring. Consider your choices and research your options. It is important to ask your child for his opinion. While it is ultimately your choice, the child will have a better experience if he feels as if he had some power in making the ultimate decision about how he will spend his summer.
62 | HOW TO GUIDE
SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPS If you are searching for a special needs camp, be cautious about choosing the right camp. Experts and trained personnel should be on hand to help children with health or wellness needs. Talk with the camp director before making a decision. Read reviews on the Internet and speak with parents who have sent their children to the camp. Also, be sure the facilities are properly equipped and safe before allowing your child to attend the camp. TRACK RECORD It is essential that the summer camp has long record of keeping children safe and happy. Also ask your friends, family and neighbors for information about summer camps for kids. Don’t base your judgment solely on their opinion, but positivity is a good first step. Once you have collected enough referrals, start looking deeper into what each camp has to offer. Even if you had a fantastic childhood experience at a particular camp, times are different now. The staff and camp counselors have changed. The facilities may have aged substantially. Visit all of the prospective camps before making a final decision. SUPERVISION Supervision varies substantially from camp to camp. Some facilities have plenty of camp counselors on hand to look after the children. At the very least, camps should have enough staff to ensure the safety of all kids.
Each state typically has a minimum staff-to-student ratio. Be sure that the camp complies with these regulations. Also, consider the following questions: Are the supervisors adults, older teens or a mixture of both? What kind of training and experience do they have? Do they have appropriate licenses and basic medical training? Background checks should be performed on everyone who is around children. It is important that you verify that the camp has performed the proper background checks. LONG-TERM INVESTMENT There is a wide range of costs associated with summer camps. If you are on a budget, consider sending your child to a basic day camp. People who can afford more might consider specialized private residential camps. Cost alone should not be a deciding factor. Remember, you are paying for memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. Never, ever risk your child’s safety in order to save money. You will have to find a camp that meets your needs as well as those of your child. Your budget should also be a factor. It isn’t easy, but finding the best camp for your child is well worth the time and expense you put into it.

HOW TO
Insurance Agents
How to Select an Insurance Agent
T
he key to quality insurance lies in choosing the right Insurance Agent for your needs Choosing an insurance company can seem like a daunting task with so many to choose from. Getting the right insurance and agent for your needs will not only save you on time and money in the future, it will also leave you with peace of mind and satisfaction. Shopping for the right insurance agent can feel overwhelming. After all, there are plenty of things to consider. You need to find a company that offers the right mix of service, coverage and an affordable price. The challenge may simply be not knowing how to identify a reliable, reputable agent. Remember that everyone needs insurance coverage. An experienced agent can walk you through various options, keeping in mind your budget and lifestyle. Before choosing an insurance plan, you will need to identify an agent to guide you through the process. Your financial future depends on finding the right person to help you get insurance that will fit your needs. Your family, friends and colleagues have likely worked with insurance agents in the past. Ask people you trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, it is because that person has had a positive experience. There is a good likelihood that you will have similar results.
64 | HOW TO GUIDE
Successful agents understand that offering great service will keep them in business. Their careers depend on word-of-mouth. If you are happy with the service you receive, your insurance agent will appreciate your willingness to refer acquaintances to them in the future. If you do not have recommendations, begin researching your options. Begin by looking at local companies and brokers. Large insurers give all of their agents the same training. Each agent will be subject to the same company policies. In some ways, that can be comforting. However, agents at large companies may lack creativity and flexibility in how they handle their accounts. As you conduct your research, be thorough and critical. Buying a policy is similar to purchasing a new car or home. It is truly that important. Select a company that is highly regarded by consumers. Read reviews of each company to determine who has the most satisfied clients. Are they easy to work with? Have there been any problems with collecting on a policy? Also, check that any prospective agent has all necessary licenses and training. After narrowing your list of prospective agents, make an appointment to visit each one. Prepare a list of questions and concerns about your personal situation. Take notes during
your meeting. Remember that you must feel comfortable with the answers before purchasing a policy. If an agent tries to pressure you into making a decision right away, inform him that you need more time and cannot sign anything immediately. The right agent will let you take as much time as you need to understand the implications of each policy. They will give you useful information and not subject you to high-pressure sales techniques. Your agent should be available. The relationship doesn’t end once the sale is completed. Your dialogue should be continuous. The best agents are available in the event you have to file a claim. Agents who have been in business for many years likely have a good reputation and track record. They understand the policies and will even take extra care that you are properly protected. It is essential that you choose the right type and amount of insurance to adequately protect yourself and your financial future. The policy should be tailored to fit your specific needs. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent will be an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future.

HOW TO
Storage Center
How to Choose a Storage Center
S
torage centers are increasingly popular solutions for safely stashing your worldly possessions on a temporary basis. When you need to move, travel or simply find more space in your house, self-storage can be a good deal. There are some important aspects to consider before selecting a storage facility. LOCATION Location is a key factor when selecting a storage company. Your ideal facility should be close to your home or office for ease of access. If you need to add or take something out of storage, you will be glad that you picked a convenient location. Avoid using companies in risky neighborhoods. The overall security of the facility will be stronger when it is in a safer part of town. SECURITY Security is another important consideration. Your belongings should be safe for the duration of the rental. Visit the facility in person to verify its security protocol. If you can’t see the center in person, talk to a knowledgeable representative on the phone. The best facilities have three security layers. 1. The building has a security fence that is not easy to climb. It
66 | HOW TO GUIDE
should be topped with barbed wire to discourage attempts to infiltrate the perimeter. 2. Heavy, secure doors seal the center. Keys, codes, or even biometric door locks safeguard your stuff. 3. A professional security guard should be on site at all times. UNIT SIZES AND CLIMATE CONTROL FEATURES The amount of belongings you have will determine the unit you need. Some self-storage centers offer units as small as 24-square feet. If you are storing furniture or a vehicle, you will probably need a unit that measures at least 300-square feet. Also, if you are storing sensitive items, such as musical instruments, look for a unit that has climate control. You can request to have an air conditioned or humidity-regulated unit. HOURS OF ACCESS Determine how often you will need to visit your items. Some people store their belongings for several months. They may only need access to them once or twice during that time. Other people might need to visit their unit several times a week. The hours of operation should fit your schedule easily. If your schedule
is unpredictable, you might consider using a storage center that is open 24-hours a day. PRICE Don’t search for a bargain. Price should not be your only consideration. After all, if you choose an inexpensive facility, they may be cutting back on important aspects. Maybe they don’t have as much security as other facilities. Maybe the building is not maintained well. Selecting a facility based solely on a low price may cause you to pay in other ways. It is not fun having your items stolen or damaged. Of course, within a storage facility, a smaller unit will be cheaper to rent than a larger one. But if the overall prices are lower than average, be very cautious. The best way to find a good storage center is word of mouth. Ask your social network for recommendations. Advertisements, the Yellow Pages and even the Internet are good sources of information. Be sure to check out several companies before narrowing your search. Start early, take your time and follow your intuition. That way, you can’t go wrong.
