The hundreds of volunteers “Welcome you to the 127th Santa Cruz County Fair.”
For 127 years our fair has offered the very best, so this year’s theme celebrates the “BERRY BEST” from the area. As you stroll through the grounds you will view the hard work and dedication from not only hundreds of volunteers that work tirelessly to make this fair possible but the thousands of participant entries. The time and effort that all our participants put in to make this fair what it is never fails to astound me. As you walk through the grounds take time to admire every aspect of what we have to offer. The beautiful grounds, the educational value of the exhibits, the fun of this wonderful community event and your continued support for its future! In Home Arts located in the Crosetti building, you will find Dave Kegebein Clothing, Textiles, Preserved Foods, Baked Good, Confections, Arts and Crafts, Photography, as well as the Collections and Hobbies exhibits. Agriculture/Horticulture is located in the Harvest building; there you will find the giant pumpkins, Berries and other fruits and vegetables, 4-H, FFA, Scouts and other Youth Organization booth displays, LEGOS, and much more. The Floriculture department offers viewers the opportunity to admire their favorite flowers in arrangements, as cut flowers, as well as specialty plants and gardens. Our Livestock Barn, with Pigs, Sheep, goats, and Beef animals, our Saturday Auction, and daily Rodeo events. Browse through the Fine Arts building with paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, gourd and jewelry creations. We have Trains, Poultry, Rabbits, Junior Fair Board has Interactive Science projects on display, Ag History has a Museum, Tractors, demonstrations displays and the Spinners and Weavers doing demonstrations or enter a Handspun and hand-woven item. It’s all here and much more, so pack-up the family and all your friends and enjoy this fun filled event. Did we mention all the great food! The racing pigs return to the beautiful lawn near the Livestock Area, bringing thrills to crowds at the Santa Cruz County Fair. These prestigious porkers have appeared in hundreds of television news reports and over 500 newspaper articles, and they’re coming to the Santa Cruz Fair this year for three appearances daily. Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home site for 25 years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County, according to manager Bart Noll. “We first played here in 1988 and had a blast – the Santa Cruz County Fair fans are the best!” he says, adding that they’ve returned more than a dozen and a half times since. Two of the main ingredients for the All-Alaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they’ve brought home the bacon at shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska. Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each 20-minute show features four races. Bart Noll admits that his eight pigs are a little spoiled. They live in an air-conditioned trailer, eat well and get a fresh cedar or pine bedding change twice daily. “They love what they do,” Bart says, “and they like people and are fun to work with.” Watch to see which one of the All-Alaskan Racing Pigs tries to hog the limelight at races held every day in their Fair home on the Livestock Lawn
Circus Imagination

All-Alaskan Racing Pigs
Back for a third year at the Santa Cruz County Fair is “Circus Imagination.” In the summer of 1986 they were known as the Traveling Circus and played most of the Western United States. The circus continues under their new name with an exciting new mission. Circus Imagination involves 20 to 25 children per show who actively dress up and go off to join the circus. Well they don’t really go to far as all the fun takes place on the Playhouse Stage. Parents will love the fact that children who join Circus Imagination are the stars, not just props or inactive members of the audience. Circus Imagination does not end when the show is over. Moms and dads are delighted to find that their children bring home the inspiration to put on their own circus in their backyard. Wrapping learning and positive growth in fun is at the heart of the Santa Cruz County Fair’s mission to serve area youth. Will Circus Imagination leave behind a banner reading “Mission Accomplished?” We’ll let a school principal provide the answer in a recent letter to the troupe. “No resource person or any assembly has been as outstanding as ....... Circus Imagination. Several of our students are now selling tickets for their own backyard circuses. In education, success is often measured by emulation.” Circus Imagination will be performing three times daily each day of the Fair.

Handspun-Handwoven
The Handspun-Handwoven Department is on the move! They are still within Yesterday’s Farm but entries will be showcased this year inside the Codiga Museum. “After a long absence from the museum we are glad to be showcased there again”, says Cathy Walls, Department Head. Just outside the museum, on the lawn under the small redwood grove, is the setting for the “Art-in-Action” tent. This idyllic locale will be home to all the usual activities. The spinners will be in residence daily and just seem to have a big crowd of youngsters looking on. Friday afternoon will be a special time for the little ones as the Twisting Sisters present “Spinning A Yarn”, a story time featuring tales old and new of spinning and weaving from around the world. A new addition this year in the Codiga Museum is a 1944 Newcomb “Weaver’s Delight” loom. Lara Rider will be showing off this mechanized loom which she has spent the last year restoring. “It’s noisy and a little temperamental, but a riot to weave on,” Rider says. Be sure to come by to see her operate this marvel of automation. Saturday will see the return of the ever-popular WASCAR (Wheels and Spindles Creative Arts Racing) competition for a 4th year. Using spinning wheels and spindles, the spinsters will bring their best to tests of spinning skill and dexterity. These “Spinning Olympians” will go for the gold in the “Spinner’s Triathlon”, in which they must spin yarn while blindfolded and wearing surgical gloves! Come watch the fun as spinners of all skill levels compete on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Who knows, they might even cajole some by-standers to try their hand at it!
Youth
This year each Club and Troop will be designing their booth around a berry of their choice. They will have educational information about their berry in the form of games and/or hands on activities. A perfect example of building a booth around this year’s Fair theme is Boulder Creek 4-H. The county’s northernmost club will be featuring two berries and their fight for supremacy. Through their project called “Living up Stream” they have learned that the very prolific Himalayan Blackberry is an unwelcome invasive plant which is choking out the native White Stemmed Raspberry. They have been working diligently, despite numerous pokes and prickles from the blackberries, to pull the invasive plant from their areas in Boulder Creek. Each 4-H, Scout, and Boys and Girls Club will showcase one of the many projects available to their membership such as sewing, technology, woodworking, Fine Arts and baking. The Technology 4-H project will have their area set-up for fair-goers to explore including perhaps a robot or two. Demonstrations will be performed by 4-H members and other youth organizations throughout the Fair on the stage in the Harvest Bldg. To add to the berry best party on the Fairgrounds the Youth Department will be honoring the Girl Scouts as they celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Stop by and learn more about Girl Scouting as they excitedly look forward to their second century.

Homebrew
A short education on beer and berries Fruit-based homebrews are sweet, sour, fruity, light, complex, refreshing, and crisp. Depending on the recipe, a fruit beer can be any combination of these traits and to state the obvious, is a beer flavored with fruit. That being said, all beers are made from grain and during the brewing process the starch is converted to sugar. During fermentation some the sugars get converted to alcohol and fizz while the residual sugars add to the flavor of the beer. Because the fruit’s sugar is already converted, it is not boiled with the grain; it gets added to the fermenter or blended with the fermented beer. Before hops were routinely used in brewing, fruit was used as both a preservative and a flavoring. The taste of the fruit could also cover up off-flavors because occasional off-flavored beers were inevitable before the discovery of yeast. When the fruit is fermented with the brew, it adds strength and flavor. When the fruit is added after fermenting, it adds sweetness, color, flavor and fizz. Not all the fruit we call berries really are berries. What most people think of as berries are small, round fruits that may have seeds, but not a stone or pit. Some of the best known berries are: strawberries raspberries blackberries The botanical definition of berry, a simple fruit having seeds and pulp produced from a single ovary includes but is not limited to: blueberries cranberries coffee berries grapes pumpkin chili peppers Some berries are very commonly used in brewing including blackberry, raspberry, coffee, and pumpkin. In a good fruit-based brew the flavor of the base recipe is complemented by the flavor of the fruit. Fruit Lambics are a sour ale where the fruit is added after the fermentation is completed. Adding the fruit restarts the fermentation process giving it more fizz. Other Belgian specialty ales are much sweeter and have more fruit quality than the traditional fruit lambics. They include fruit-based Flanders Red Ale and the sweeter lambics like Lindemans. Most of the Berry Best candidates are Fruit Beers. The distinctive aromas and flavor associated with the fruit should be prevalent, but balanced with the flavor of the base beer. Depending on the recipe, the fruit flavor can be subtle or extreme. In addition to the Best of Show and Best of Flight prizes, homebrewers can compete for bragging rights to the Berry Best Homebrew. A special plaque will be awarded to the homebrewer who creates the best berry-based homebrew. Come see the winning recipes at the Homebrew Department display in the Harvest Building annex. The Homebrew Department will also be doing brewing demonstrations and craft beer tasting each day of the fair, on the patio outside the Harvest Building. Check the daily schedule for times and details.

Ag Hort
It is a Fair theme and Fair department marriage made in heaven. The Agriculture/Horticulture Department (Ag Hort) could not be more pleased with this year’s theme, “Come See the Berry Best.” The berry farming community has been very generous to the department donating, for example, thousands of pounds of strawberries over the years. These donations have been turned into salsas, desserts, and smoothies and have been served each year to Fair patrons. Volunteer chef, Anna Marie, works with dozens of community volunteers and high school students each year and teaching them how to prepare and serve these delicious berries. Have you ever seen a pie eating contest? Well this year the Ag/Hort Department will be having their first pie eating contest on Friday night, September 14. Naturally the pies will be made with berries from local growers such as Cal Giant, Dole, Berry Bowl, Driscoll’s and many others. In fact, Berry Bowl has stepped up to be a building sponsor and will be supporting Friday night’s big event. This should prove to be a berry delicious time! The department will have their famous Giant Pumpkin Champions on display, as well as the heaviest zucchini, the heaviest apple, and best decorated pumpkin. Please don’t forget to take a look at the Veggie Creatures. These are the most popular entries in the department and one of the most creative. Dish entries from family gardeners will include tomatoes, apples, herbs, onions, beans, avocados, lemons, melons, carrots, corn and so much more. The Commercial displays will contain leafy greens, artichokes, leeks, radishes, zucchini, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, peppers, mushrooms, and all kinds of locally grown berries. Ag Hort pleased to be showcasing the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau. Last year the Farm Bureau won the gold medal at the California State Fair for their exhibit illustrating the evolution of the cattle industry in the county. Not only did they win at state, but they won Santa Cruz County Fair’s Best Professional Commercial Exhibit and a Best of Show.
A Battle of Berries
by Jennifer Hennig For this year’s Fair the Boulder Creek 4-H Club decided to represent the native White Stemmed Raspberry in its battle with a non-native competitor, the Himalayan Blackberry. This has become a means of sharing the club’s newly acquired knowledge and hobby of native plant restoration. Both of these plants grow in the same areas but you often only see the blackberry due to its invasive nature. Starting in the spring of this year, the club has been active on a wetland restoration project. This project has many different parts to it but, being spring, they decided to get started on the non-native species removal first. This became very educational learning which species of plants were native and which were not. Suddenly club members were seeing everything growing around them in an entirely different perspective. Areas they viewed as lush and green became viewed as native plants suffocating under invasion. So why are native plants, like the White Stemmed Raspberry, so important? The answer to that is vast but, in a nutshell, native plants support their ecosystem. They provide habitat for local fauna as a food
produced by the register-pajaronian
source and place for shelter and nesting. With native species erosion control is provided without the need for extra water or fertilizer and native plants provide natural fire protection. The problem with non-natives, like the Himalayan Blackberry, is they take away the vital resources the natives need to grow, namely sunlight and water, and often grow at a very alarming rate. Whole hillsides can be taken over in as little as a year given the right conditions. Sure they’re tasty but they are taking over! How many times have you battled the seedlings that start in your garden from bird droppings? And you can’t just pull them out like a dandelion either. These berries are resilient! All the while altering our native ecosystems. Have you noticed an increase in fire danger over the years? So what can you do about these berries? Well, during berry season pick and eat as many blackberries as you can find growing on the side of the road, fence, river… anywhere they are growing wild. Then to learn about how to effectively remove the Himalayan Blackberry, come on by the Boulder Creek 4-H booth. They’ll show you how!

4-H Robotics & Technology 4-H has developed a comprehensive robotics program to inspire young people and develop an early interest in robotics engineering and technology. This new program is part of 4-H’s bold goal to engage one million new young people in science by the year 2013 and to address a declining trend in our nation’s science, engineering, mathematics, and technology workforce. Since this program began in 2009 robotics has been a part of 4-H Clubs across the country including incorporation into the Technology Program under Bev Porter who is a leader at the Boulder Creek 4-H Club. From left to right are Joshua Porter, a goat named Brie, Sam the chicken, and Ryan Porter. (Yes they are brothers.) The young lady holding Buddy Boy the goat is Michaela Crill. All except the two goats and the chicken are county 4-H members. The Porter twins are from Boulder Creek 4-H and Michaela from the La Selva Beach 4-H Club. The goats are from a county wide market goat project and the chicken was found wandering in the forest at 4-H Camp Loma in July and was rescued by Ryan.
Can’t Wait To See Michael Mezmer Again!
It wouldn’t be the Santa Cruz County Fair without Michael Mezmer. And this year again is no exception. “Are you kidding, I booked him immediately after his last show” explained entertainment director Read Zaro. “The crowds would kill me if I didn’t bring him back” he explained. Mezmer is a quite the entertainer and, as passers by stop and watch, the audience grows and grows as the show continues. His “Theater of the Mind” shows are designed to enthrall, surprise, and entertain. Under his mesmerizing power, unsuspecting audience members face their fears, lose inhibitions and become a highly entertaining focus of the show. All ages enjoy the entertainment as Mezmer is a world-class “Master of Hypnosis,” and has been delighting audiences with his “Theater of the Mind Comedy Hypnosis Show” at fairs, colleges, corporate gatherings and other events for years. Mezmer has toured throughout the United States and the Far East, performing before millions with standing-room-only crowds at major fairs, amusement parks, festivals, corporate events, universities, night clubs, casinos and other special events. He showed signs of his unusual talent at the tender age of 5 and prior to becoming recognized as a top hypnotist, he appeared in musical comedies, television, films and toured internationally as an award-winning illusionist. Since then has become a well-known and respected expert in the field of hypnosis, has a PhD. in Psychology from Columbia State University and is highly sought after as a lecturer as well as an entertainer. Yesterday’s Farm
Fair goers are invited to step back into Yesterday’s Farm during the 2012 Santa Cruz County Fair. Yesterday’s Farm is produced by the Agricultural History Project (AHP) and this will be the 27th edition. They have been working all year to prepare for the Fair and hope you enjoy it. New for this year is the opening of the railroad caboose. This Caboose has been on the site for over 15 years and through the efforts of Bill Jankowski, Bryce George, Jim Kruger, and the late Norm Perryman, the Caboose will be ready for guests when the Fair opens September 11th. This team has been working on the restoration of the Caboose for over 5 years. As most old timers know, the caboose was the last car on most trains travelling long distances until about 1980 when electronic equipment began guiding the train engineer. The AHP’s Caboose is not handicap accessible so a TV monitor will be set up nearby showing the restored interior. Also new this year at Yesterday’s Farm is the Hop Exhibit which will be on site explaining the history of hops. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s hops were a vital crop grown in Santa Cruz County. Coincidently there were four or more breweries in the area making beer, creating a demand for the hops. In keeping with the philosophy of bringing history to life, Yesterday’s Farm is also growing hops and they will be available for fairgoers to see up close. By the time the Fair opens visitors will see the new Tractor Barn completed or nearly so as volunteers continue building the back wall to protect the tractor display from the elements. The Santa Cruz Chapter of the Antique Auto Club will again display eight antique cars during the fair. Fred Silva will be there with his Clydesdale horses again this year for all to observe and learn about the draft horse breed. Education days are always exciting for the children as they learn how to make wheat flour at Claudia’s Kitchen. Claudia’s Kitchen has been part of Yesterday’s Farm for 25 years and is operated by Chuck and Claudia Scott. Visitors may also ride on a hay wagon, milk a cow, and learn how people lived

before refrigeration and the grocery store. Education Days are Wednesday and Thursday of the Fair from 9 AM to Noon and organizers can always use volunteers those days. At Yesterday’s Farm you will see continuous demonstrations of old farm equipment by the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association and volunteers from the Agricultural History Project. Spinners and Weavers are back
demonstrating how to make yarn and fabric and in the evening a Tractor Parade will make way through the Fairgrounds starting at 6:30 PM. Not surprisingly Yesterday’s Farm is always looking for stories from people who lived or worked in the area 70+ years ago. Please stop by and introduce yourself and someone will be happy to talk to you. Enjoy the Fair!

Sea Lion Encounters The Sea Lions are back for more fun at the Santa Cruz County Fair on the Exploratorium Lawn. The Sea Lions are part of an innovative program called SLEWTHS (Science, Learning and Experimenting With The Help of Sea Lions). Under the coordination of Dr. Jenifer A. Hurley, the program’s director of research and training, SLEWTHS is dedicated to learning more about sea lions and people working together in the interest of marine conservation, research and education. Fairgoers will have the opportunity of viewing and learning more about Dr. Hurley’s famous sea lions each day of the Fair, including being given the opportunity to ask questions about these fascinating animal neighbors of ours. In addition, scheduled training demonstrations will take place each day A main tank holding 20,000+ gallons of water will serve as performing stage with a 10,000 gallon tank backstage that provides a rest area. Performances are scheduled twice each afternoon but Dr. Hurley or her assistants can often be found with their troupe throughout the day even when not performing. The sea lions are relaxing and even doing a little light training during most daylight hours each day of the Fair. Find the Sea Lions showing off their tricks in shows scheduled twice daily through the run of the Fair.

Who doesn’t love crazy cowboys and their silly steeds? The Fables of the West are a wild group of witty cowboys and are back again for this year’s Santa Cruz County Fair! A fan favorite at fairs across the nation, these little cowboys and their little horses love to entertain crowds. With wacky tricks, high energy, and western style, their comedic improv shows have people smiling and laughing all day. As The Fables often say, “We like to ride into a crowd, sing a little ditty, twirl our guns and dazzle the folks with our fancy horse moves.” They bring the fun of the Wild West to everyone at the Fair. The Fables of the West will be galloping around the Santa Cruz County Fair and amusing crowds daily from 3:30 to 7:30 pm.
