Santa Cruz County is one of the smallest counties in California, yet it contains a wide variety of beautiful scenery and hosts dozens of microclimates. Here you will find the Santa Cruz Mountains with its redwood forests, acres of some of the world’s most fertile farmland, long sandy beaches, and ocean bluffs. It is also the gateway to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, supporting one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems. It is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fish, invertebrates and plants in a remarkably productive coastal environment. In close proximity to our wonderful county is Monterey County. These rich and varied environments make the Monterey Bay area an exciting vacation destination with something of interest for everyone. This guide will help you to locate all of our special activities, attractions, restaurants, and accommodations. ounded in 1976, the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets (MBCFM) is the oldest and largest farmers market organization on the Central Coast of California. It is comprised of a family of four farmers markets with locations in Aptos, Carmel, and two in Monterey. Each market has its own unique style that reflects its community. Two of the four markets operate year-round. The Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets have won multiple awards in recent years, including “best farmers market” in California, Santa Cruz County, and ranks second in the U.S. by American Farmland Trust.

Our Bountiful Region

The Monterey Bay region, from the North Coast of Santa Cruz County to the tip of Monterey, is an extremely rich agricultural area that is home to a remarkable number of outstanding organic farms, wineries and food purveyors. The region is also esteemed for being a leader in sustainable and organic agricultural practices. In fact, Santa Cruz is the cradle of the organic movement dating back to 1967 when Alan Chadwick and students transformed a rugged hillside at University of California Santa Cruz into an abundant garden using hand tools and

organic amendments. Our region is now home to more organic operations than any other area in California.

Our Team

The farmers markets are a team effort of farmers, vendors, and marketing staff led by Executive Director Catherine Barr. Since 1993, Catherine has dedicated her efforts to expanding the markets in local communities and championing the preservation of small family farmers. In 2010, she was awarded the prestigious “Al Smith Friend of Agriculture Award” for her outstanding service to the agricultural community by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau. From humble beginnings, Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets have grown into thriving farmers markets that bring our communities together in appreciation of the rich bounty of our region. The Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Market maintains two website resources for the community. The primary site is www.montereybayfarmers.org. The companion site, www.edibleparadise.com, is devoted to culinary education and seasonal recipes for cooking locally grown food.

he main sheet is up and the jib is tight. The shoreline recedes behind you and here comes the sushi. Top that off with a face full of fresh Pacific wind, a sip of regional wine or a glass of quality beer. Now settle back and hang on — your two-hour cruise aboard the Chardonnay II, a 70-foot luxury sailing yacht, has just begun. This is a typical start for the popular Chardonnay charters that operates out of the Santa Cruz Harbor year-round. The sleek, designed-for-speed cutter, with a 65-foot mast and nine feet of draft, seats 49 people with plenty of space to stretch out. Each two-hour adventure commonly offers a mix of energized sailing and relaxing inner bay stretches, which are ideal for reloading your plate or a beverage refill. Rachel Chiapetta took a Sunday charter recently with two friends. “This was a 10 out of 10 for me,” she said. “It was a perfect day on the bay. The crew was fantastic, the food was great and the music just totally made it a wonderful experience. I would recommend this to anyone. We got good views of the boardwalk and wharf. The crew really takes care of you. It’s a fantastic deal.” Commissioned July 12, 1991, in Santa Cruz, Chardonnay II was designed and built by Bill Lee Yachts Inc. of Soquel. Bill Lee, designer and builder, said the style of the sailboat is a cutter-rigged sailboat, built with the same hull shape as the famed Santa Cruz 70 sailboat that Lee said is enormously popular in sail racing communities. The ship can motor at 13 knots and motor-sail at 16.8 knots. Lee said the cutter design means it has one mast with one main sail and two jibs. t may be more than 100 years old, but the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk still has a youthful vibe that not many other centennials can keep up with. Santa Cruz’s premier tourist destination is home to amusement rides, arcades, miniature golf, restaurants, stores and more. And of course, it’s located right along the beach. It’s the mix of old and new that gives the Boardwalk its unique charm. New attractions are mixed in with

older ones, and modern architecture intertwines with those of yesterday. Tom Canfield, executive vice president at the Boardwalk, said the park looks fresh and clean as it enters its 108th season this year thanks to new paint throughout, praising the work crews. “I don’t think the park has ever looked greater,” he said. “It absolutely looks gorgeous.” The newness of the park goes beyond aesthetics. In October 2013, the Boardwalk opened its new roller coaster, Undertow, replacing Hurricane after 20 years of operation. Undertow, a $5.5 million investment

for the park, is manufactured by German coaster specialist Maurer Sohne. It takes four riders per vehicle throughout the 1,410 feet of track. Standing at 50 feet tall, a total of seven cars are on the track at any given time. However, Undertow isn’t a conventional roller coaster. Each car spins freely throughout the course, and depending on the weight and number of riders in the car, each ride is a different experience. Boardwalk Community Relations Director Kris Reyes said Undertow is “great for all ages and all ridership levels.” The name, Undertow, is appropriate for the coaster, he noted.

Northern California, called the coaster “one-of-a-kind.” “The Giant Dipper is a gem among coasters,” he said. “It’s rare nowadays to find such a historic and well-loved wooden coaster, and the Boardwalk has done a fantastic job of preserving it for future generations to enjoy.” The coaster was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. National Park Service in 1987. That same year, another signature attraction at the Boardwalk was given historic status: The 1911 Looff Carousel. Designed by Danish woodcarver Charles I.D. Looff, the carousel is one of only a few carousels in the world still featuring a working ring dispenser, according to the Boardwalk. As the carousel spins around, riders are challenged to throw those rings into the “mouth” of a clown drawing, and if successful, they are awarded with the lighting up of the clown’s eyes and bragging rights. Music for the carousel is provided by a 342-pipe Ruth und Sohn band organ built in 1894. The Boardwalk’s flair for preserving old and new is recognized on an international level. The park took home the title of “Best Seaside Park” for the eighth time at the Golden Ticket Awards ceremony in 2014. The Golden Ticket Awards, presented by trade newspaper Amusement Today, is an annual event that has been described as the amusement industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. Amusement park owners and managers, ride manufacturers and other industry officials gather at the event. Winners were selected by amusement park enthusiasts from around the world. The Boardwalk earned 45 percent of the votes, topping second place Pleasure Beach in Blackpool, England, by 29 percent. Undertow is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s newest ride.

“Just like an undertow has the ability to pull you under and spin you around, this ride very much does that,” he said. But the centerpiece of the Boardwalk is fittingly located right in the heart of the park: The 91-year-old Giant Dipper roller coaster. Opening on May 17, 1924, the National Amusement Park Historical Association lists the Giant Dipper as the oldest roller coaster in California, the fifth oldest in the country and the ninth oldest in the world. The nearly two-minute ride stands at 70 feet tall, reaching speeds of 55 mph.

“The Giant Dipper is the Boardwalk’s signature ride, bringing visitors to the Boardwalk just to experience its thrills,” said Brigid Fuller, Boardwalk spokesperson. “And amazingly, after 90 years, it’s still a really exciting ride.” La Selva Beach resident Nicholas Laschkewitsch, assistant regional representative for American Coaster Enthusiasts

or the past 13 years a free, outdoor salsa dance gathering has been offered to the public at the base of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Salsa by the Sea, held on a wide deck beside the Ideal Bar & Grill restaurant, a stone’s throw from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, offers Latin American music and a friendly, all are welcome setting. “I’ve been salsa dancing for the past six years,” said Charlotte Hemmer of San Jose. “It’s pretty difficult but so much fun. The salsa community is very diverse. Salsa can really reach out and grab you.” Run by a group of volunteer disc jockeys, the event mixes a blend of Columbian, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American and Mexican music. Dances include salsa, cha cha cha, mambo, merengue, bachata, cumbia, timba, Mambo, and Guaguanco. “What I like about Salsa by the Sea is it’s a great way to spread the joy of dancing,” said DJ Willi Prudencio, who played his blend of music for the dancers on a recent Sunday. “I enjoy celebrating what I consider my culture. This is about

good company, great friends, and everyone enjoying something that is safe, multi-cultural and no one is excluded.” Prudencio was born in El Salvador and raised in Monterey. He has taught dancing for the past 10 years, and has focused on salsa and bachata for the past six years. The event was founded and is headed up by Trace Farley of Santa Cruz. “It started really small,” he said. “But it began to grow over the years. Then it was 15, then 20 people. It wasn’t really big until a few years ago when we started getting over 100 people.” Farley said that one day a police officer asked if he had a permit and he replied he had no idea such a thing was necessary. So he applied with the City of Santa Cruz. “I learned these things can take months,” Farley said. “The city was very supportive of us and I applied on a Tuesday and by Friday we had our permit. And of course the Ideal Bar & Grill has always welcomed us.” Farley, who is from Sacramento, said anyone is welcome with any level of dance experience. “People come out and just jump in

free style and that’s just fine,” he said. “Sometimes I help people learn a few steps. Salsa by the Sea is about the joy and the love of dancing.” Anahi Her said Salsa by the Sea is a great addition to Santa Cruz. “I came to this for the first time about two weeks ago and it is addicting — it is so much fun,” she said. “It’s a way of celebrating my roots. I grew up dancing these steps.” Farley said he has seen people that have met at Salsa by the Sea and gotten married. “Yes, there have been a few salsa babies that were born out of this,” he said. “If you’re interested in dancing with us, come on out. Maybe take a few classes at the Palomar Ballroom. We have people that come from San Francisco, Monterey, and from around San Jose. If you are not dancing you should be.” Salsa by the Sea runs year-round on Sundays from 3 p.m. to sundown near the base of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. or a unique, close-up window into the ecosystem of the Monterey Bay, trying hopping into a kayak and paddling your way into the Pacific or into the tranquil waters of Elkhorn Slough. Thanks to the folks at Kayak Connection, who operate out of Moss Landing and the Santa Cruz Harbor, and Monterey Bay Kayaks, who have a location in Moss Landing and Monterey, the experience is made simple and accessible. Jess Grigsby, who owns the 25-yearold Kayak Connection with her husband, Dave, said the Santa Cruz location offers kayakers a chance to paddle out of the Santa Cruz Harbor and onto the open sea to take in Santa Cruz’s iconic sights such as Steamer’s Lane, Lighthouse Point, the Municipal Wharf and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. “Just being out on the open sea in a kayak is a unique experience,” Jess Grigsby said. “The wildlife, the Monterey Bay Sanctuary, fresh air and exercise are a great combination. Also, the Elkhorn Slough experience is sheltered and most often calm with so many species of birds and the world’s largest population of the southern sea otter. The minute you set out in the water you are immersed in interesting wildlife; you don’t have to paddle really far into the slough before the show begins.” Both companies offer an array of tours led by marine biology experts that focus on giving people

a maximum of education of the ecosystem and its inhabitants while having fun. Grigsby said people can rent kayaks and take off by themselves or sign up for a tour. People on the tours are first given a safety lesson and instructions about how to kayak in a fun and relaxing manner and what to do if you capsize. “It’s really easy and we want everyone to get the most out of their experience,” Grigsby said. While both companies offer similar tours and classes Monterey Bay Kayaks offers “sit on top” kayaks, which are geared toward beginners. “The sit on top is easier for children because if you flip over you are not inside the kayak and you can easily regain yourself,” said Holokai Brown, program manager. “We also offer stand up paddleboard rentals and tours. Our wetsuits are provided at no extra cost because we want everyone to be safe and warm.” Bird enthusiasts are encouraged to tour Elkhorn Slough in a kayak to take in the vast array of species. One option is the “we paddle, you photo” tour where an experienced kayaker tows your kayak so you can be hands-free to use your camera and binoculars. The businesses will rent to a child as young as 5 if they are in the company of an adult. They take children as young as 3 on tours. “We have a staff of 45 people,” Grigsby said. “We are a close knit family. It’s a cohesive fun group.” Ocean kayaking offers a chance to see

a host of wildlife including orcas, blue whales, harbor porpoises, harbor seals, and risso dolphins. Grigsby said whale watching tours launch from both locations but only experience kayakers are allowed on tours out of Moss Landing because of the dangerous waters at the harbor entrance. “One of the exciting things is getting to know how diverse and amazing Elkhorn Slough is,” Grigsby said. “Most people that just drive by have no idea what wildlife is out there and how easily accessible it is. The first time I paddled up on a group of sea nettle jellyfish was incredible.” A truly different experience in a kayak is the Starlight Bioluminescence Tour, Grigsby said, where you can discover the phenomena of the bioluminescent summer bloom. Bioluminescence is the emission of light from living organisms. “It starts by going out for a sunset tour and once it is totally dark out you can see the bioluminescence in the water, drink hot chocolate and see your paddle glow as it moves through the water,” she said. Grigsby said Kayak Connection frequently entertains large groups, even up to 100-plus of students, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and team builders. apitola evolved out of a settlement known as Soquel Landing named for a wharf at the end of Soquel Creek dating back to the 1850s. Sitting on the northeast shore of Monterey Bay, Capitola is known for its steep cliffs and beautiful beaches. Capitola Village is a popular tourist destination for its excellent restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops and galleries. Soquel sits next to Capitola on the north side of the Cabrillo Highway. Capitola Begonia Festival Labor Day Weekend September 4th-7th, 2015

Fishing on the Capitola Wharf is always a fun way to spend the morning. You can fish straight off the pier or rent a boat and head out to one of the nearby reefs. Fishing off the pier an angler can choose to fish the surf area for the larger barred and calico surfperch, or fish deeper water for white croaker, several smaller species of perch, jacksmelt, flounder, sole, sand dabs and halibut. The pier was rebuilt in the 80’s and offers great seafood dining.

Capitola Art & Wine Festival September 12th & 13th, 2015 The festival combines Art, Wine, Music and Food, all in charming Capitola Village. Over 150 fine artists and 22 Santa Cruz Mountains wineries will participate in this year’s Festival.

The Capitola Begonia Festival began in 1951. The festival features dozens of floats, solely decorated with begonia blooms and other fauna.

he Ohlone people originally named Aptos which means “the meeting of two creeks.” Probably the most mispronounced area in Santa Cruz County, the residents say it “app-toss.” Aptos is especially unique with the Forest of Nisene Marks and Seacliff State Beach within walking distance of each other. Nisene Marks has some of the best hiking and mountain biking in the world. Seacliff State Beach hosts the concrete ship SS Palo Alto lying in the water. If you are camping in an RV, Seacliff Beach is one of the best places to spend the weekend.

Perhaps one of the most accessible of Santa Cruz County’s myriad natural areas, is Nisene Marks State Park. With a long, flat road leading into its center, the park has several hiking areas readily accessible by vehicle. Many visitors drive in past the entrance station and park in the lot near the steel bridge, which is about a mile in and a perfect place to begin a walk. For the ambitious and adventure seeking types, the park offers 30 miles of hiking trails winding through 10,000 acres, with sites that include Five Finger Falls and Maple Falls. The entrance is a short drive up Aptos Creek Road past Epicenter Bicycling, which rents bikes for anyone interested

in taking a two-wheel tour of the park. While the fire road is the only place where biking is permitted, it has become a favorite of mountain bikers as it stretches for miles to the north and allows for long rides. However visitors choose to travel through the park, they should be prepared to leave behind the hustle of city life and enter a verdant, silent green place where the forest largely muffles man-made noise. Cabrillo College Historian Emeritus Sandy Lydon said that many potential visitors don’t know about Nisene Marks, assuming they must drive for hours to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to see a truly beautiful park. “You walk in, take your sunglasses off and its like, ‘wow! Instant peacefulness,’” Lydon said. “You can go in and clear away the cobwebs from your head. All the noise and stress you feel can be cleared away in 10 minutes.”

hile traveling south on the Cabrillo Highway from Santa Cruz to Monterey you will find the small harbor town of Moss Landing. On a clear day you can easily spot Moss Landing from anywhere on the Monterey Bay by its immense smoke stacks rising up from the local power plant. Explore Wildlife Blue Ocean Whale Watch

If you are looking for a paddling adventure the Elkhorn Slough is a perfect destination. It features tranquil calm waters and is a little less crowded than some of the other spots on the bay. There is a good chance you’ll see a lot of special sea life including sea lions, sea otters, and too many different species of birds to name here. Get everything you need from lessons to rentals from the Kayak Connection at 2370 Highway 1.

Come out to the bay and book a charter for a fabulous day on the water with your friends and family! Several deepsea charters supply visitors with all the essential equipment for a great day of fishing. Moss Landing offers stunning views and great stocks of salmon, bass, crab, halibut, rock cod, albacore, sand dab, blue mackerel, coppers, vermilions, and lingcod. Fishing licenses are required so call ahead to make sure you’re ready to go with a valid permit.

Whale Watching

Always popular are the whale watching tours and because Moss Landing is at the heart of the bay it’s a prime location to start looking for whales. The Monterey Submarine Canyon begins right offshore which means it’s only minutes before you’re over deep, cold, nutrient-rich water that attracts all kinds of wildlife. There are plenty of tours departing year-round and there are whales for all seasons. In the spring we have Humpback Whales, with a few Gray Whales in the beginning of the season. In summer look for Humpback Whales, Blue Whales, and Fin Whales. Fall has Humpback Whales and Blue Whales while during the Winter months watch for Migrating Gray Whales.

Manuel’s (Aptos)

Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant has been in business for 50 years. Its popularity is due to good food, the down-home ambiance and friendly service. Located near the entrance to Seacliff Beach State Park, it’s a convenient stop for locals and tourists alike. Named after the founder, Manuel Santana, the cozy restaurant has a casual atmosphere, moderate prices, and family-friendly environment. Some fun Mexican artwork is on display at the bar, where a glass of local wine or a good “cerveza” awaits you. Manuel’s greets their customers in true Mexican style with a bowl of chips and salsa. The now-famous salsa is so popular that it can be bought in jars to take home. Even the labels have Manuel’s colorful touch, designed by the founder himself. Lunch specials are served Monday through Friday, and a daily regional special is featured after 5 p.m., such as Mole Poblano on Sunday. Manuel’s serves up a mean margarita and a good selection of beer, wine and spirits. Some of the staff has been at Manuel’s for more than 20 years.
