SEA OTTER SAVY
Sea otters at play in Morro Bay.
Morro Bay’s furry friends bounced back after near extinction
A
walk along the Morro Bay Embarcadero gives visitors many interesting things to see what with barking sea lions, rapacious gulls winging overhead, and deep diving pelicans. One of the more exciting critters that most people ask about is the Southern Sea Otter. While Morro Bay has always had an otter or two somewhere in the bay, this popular marine mammal has taken to life in our waters more abundantly in the past few years.

Homeland Travel
I
t’s summer and visitors flock to the beach of Morro Bay to flee the heat of inward places. Summer brings travel to many, often to exotic locations. For me, if I must board an airplane I’d rather it took me to far-away places like Scotland or France or Bora Bora. But this year was not the time for those destinations. Thus, I found myself winging eastward to the other side of the continent to the land of my birth. Airports, cities, and highways left behind, I travel into the depths of this place of my origins and on old roads find this: Old stone fences crumbling in the woods, marking off boundaries of farm fields forgotten and gone back to the wild. Ancient stone buildings, two stories high, once for storing hay in the loft and animals in the stalls below. A long high ridge of stone and upon it a trail that runs the length of the continent. Lakes and ponds, brooks and streams, all flow swiftly by and finally an escarpment, a 100-foot drop with torrents of white water dropping down. Trout, tagged to trace their wanderings slip quickly by in a creek. May Apple sprouts through the damp undergrowth with wild violets strewn along a crumbling stacked stone fence. Trees, thin in stature, beginning to sprout green leaves in this spring time, stand to attention, close-patched and tall. Some flowering trees among the woods—wild apple, cherry, and some with names not known—pink, magenta and white. Yellow forsythia runs riot along the roadside and locked up trash cans hint at signs of wildlife—bears. Now a cardinal, red in its splendor, sings from inside the branches of a bush. A robin bounces in a green field. In a pen on the hillside, exotic Mangalitsa pigs and piglets chow down and black and white cows chew their cud, resting in a field. The road leads to a deserted village, plans to drown it in a reservoir abandoned. Now houses and shops line a dusty street and sightless windows stare out upon the traveler. God is missing here from the tall white church and no children come streaming from the one-room schoolhouse. An historic place, long forgotten. The Delaware River flows through here not far away, a place of history. And through the valley lie old barns, farmhouses and grain silos. There a red barn shows a stenciled patterned barn quilt. What is this place? It is a secret. Guarded jealously. But those of us born in this state can be proud. God has graced at least one small northern corner here. A real treasure, a rare gem – the real New Jersey.

earth Care spirituality comes to Morro Bay
C
ombining “earth care” and spirituality, referred to as Blue Theology, the First Christian Church of Morro Bay will inaugurate a new project, Earth Care Ministries, and commission its first Director on Sunday, Aug. 27, at its 11 a.m. service. The church has appointed Ruth Ann Angus to the newlyestablished position. A long-time Morro Bay resident and freelance writer, Ruth Ann is widely recognized for her involvement in the environmental community. Her activism goes back more than thirty years when she played a key role in the formation of the Morro Bay
National Estuary Program. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Morro Bay Sunset and has recently combined the Rotary International Peacebuilders program locally with Yes We Can Peacebuilders/ Nonviolent Cities Project. “Our goal,” she said, “is to affect a shift in consciousness whereby we will build the structures of peace/ nonviolence into community relationships.” “Blue Theology” advocate Rev. Deborah Streeter will join with the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in celebrating its new ministry and commissioning its Director. Blue
Theology is a ministry of the Pacific Grove Christian Church. The Blue Theology Mission Station recognizes the natural affinity between environmental stewardship and spirituality and encourages individuals and institutions to pay attention to God’s call to care for all creation and to act to promote justice for all creation. The public is welcome to attend the celebration on Aug 27 at 11 a.m. The church is located at 2050 Ironwood Ave., Morro Bay.

Kayak Horizons co-owner Dennis Krueger hands a guest a paddle.
Guests depart on a tour with Kayak Horizons.
Kayakers on tour with Kayak Horizons get a perfect, unobstructed view of Morro Rock.
Tour offers unobstructed view of Morro Rock CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Dennis, in his straw sun hat and Bermuda shorts. He gave his safety spiel on boat traffic, how to avoid fighting the tides, and how to get to the beach from the harbor. No need to fear the neighboring sea lions and otters jumping into the boat. Krueger said since he and his wife bought the 22-year-old business in 2004, he’s never had a problem with the local wildlife. And depending on the amount of bait fish, dolphins swim by the dock for a visit. Every two or three years, in the spring or fall, an immature whale will get separated from their group and find it’s way into the harbor, where the otters and sea lions prefer over the ocean. “We’re so blessed here,” Dennis Kruger said, after explaining the summer hasn’t been too bad, business-wise. The weather has made a nice come back, and it looks like it’s going to hold. “I mean people come from all over the world, and then they come back from kayaking and it’s just like holy cow, wow.” In a mere hour, Kruger had lowered his fleet of 12 Sit-In Necky and Old Town kayaks into the water five times over. He met an extended family from Las Vegas who have rented a beach house in Cayucos every year for the past 15 years, another family from the Netherlands who came for the sun and the seals, and a local Cuesta student who regulars the rental place before her 3 p.m. shift at the Morro Bay Best Western. One little kayaker couldn’t have been older than four-years-old. “I recommend people come here,” said Dominike Tambazidis, the local student who rented a single kayak. Rentals are first-come, first-serve, and go for $14 the first hour and $10 per hour after that. There are group rates as well, tours, and sales. Kayak Horizons is now offering Nalu 12.5 Ocean stand up paddleboards for rent as well. The Paddle Sports Store sells new kayaks, life jackets, paddles, waterproof and breathable outerwear, booties, gloves, sandals, dry bags and other watersport accessories. “In my free time I like to come out here and enjoy Morro Bay, all
the great adventure that is out here. I love it because Dennis’ kayaking is so convenient... It’s beautiful for the eye to see. Morro Bay rock is right on the water,” Tambazidis said. The Kruegers are efficient. Debbie, a former banker, runs the waiver forms and the payments and gears up the customers, young and old, in life jackets, while Dennis moves the kayaks in and out of the water. “It’s so nice having my wife down here,” Dennis said. “So I don’t have to go up and down the ramp like a crazy person.” The two of them keep open seven days a week, year round, as the weather is calm even in the month of February. College kids help out so they can get a break every once in awhile. On Dennis’ days off he likes to ride motorcycles. He goes fishing in the surf. He and Debbie work in the yard at their house in Morro Bay. The Kruegers moved to the area 18 years ago from the Reno area after falling in love with Morro Bay. Dennis ran a construction company. Their daughter joined them from Reno and now lives in San Luis Obispo. They have three grandchildren. “This is how you get to spend your life. It’s not a bad thing you know,” Dennis laughs. He said he likes to brag about the beauty of Morro Bay and works with the Tourism Bureau. “You see some of the nicest transient boats going up and down the coast due to being next to the yacht club. People heading down the Sea of Cortez or something. You see some pretty amazing watercraft.” “With the sea lions and the otters and the harbor seals and all the different bird life and the boating, it’s like that perfect combination of what you want to do outdoors in a recreational sense with your family, but it’s in a really mellow setting,” he said. “It’s not like you have to go out in the ocean or go out in the waves or anything.” Kayak Horizons has the most unobstructed view of the Morro Rock natural wonder, pretty much any photo one dares to take in the kayak is a
keeper. Another group lined up at the end of the hour that Friday. “Let’s make it happen,” Dennis said, as he lined up a couple doubles and a single for a couple and and a group of kids and grandparents. Being a small business the Kruegers are always tracking the traffic, but they are getting a normal amount of
kayakers for July. Dennis tells the incoming group to try to synchronize their strokes. He lets them know the heaviest person sits in the back, and the couple bursts into laughter as the female in the couple begrudgingly takes the rear seat. The mood is as relaxing and calm as the water. For the Kruegers, this is how they get to spend their life.

Morro Bay otter population currently around 36 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Sea otters have had a difficult time coexisting with humans. At one time, they numbered in the hundreds of thousands and could be found from Baja California to the Aleutian Islands. They were found in Central Coast waters too until Russian, American and Spanish fur traders discovered the quality of their dense fur. It is estimated that more than one million otters were killed between 1740 and 1911. They were thought to be extinct along California’s coast until a small group was found at the mouth of Bixby Creek in Big Sur in 1938. Instead of relying on blubber the sea
otter stays warm due to its fur consisting of a luxuriant under-layer of thick brown hairs and a top coat sprinkled with silvery guard hairs. An inch of skin grows approximately 650,000 hairs. Those inner hairs being so thick trap air bubbles and this improves the insulation quality of the fur. Many times, sea otters are seen grooming their coats and rolling over and over in the water. This helps to refill the fur with air bubbles. This air also aids in keeping the animal afloat. An otter’s skin is very loose and this enables them to reach all parts of their fur except the back of the head that they groom with their front and back feet. A voracious appetite goes along with a high metabolism and sea otters seem to eat

continuously when they aren’t grooming or napping. Intense feeding times are usually in early mornings and late afternoon. They dive for their food up to sixty feet and find urchins, clams, crabs, lobsters, octopus, mussels and chiton. A dive can last up to 90 seconds. To break open shelled animals the otter finds and carries a rock placing it on their chest as they float on their backs. They crack a clam or crab on the rock breaking open the shell and consume the contents. Utilizing the large skin flaps under their arms, sea otters can stow their pounding rock while performing repeated dives. Sea otters can be seen in ocean waters in and near kelp beds and they enjoy swimming in and out of the huge kelp fronds. Giant kelp grows in waters of about 80 feet and uses the rocky bottom for kelp holdfasts. Sea otters also use kelp forests to escape from predators such as sharks and killer whales. One of the big reasons otters like kelp beds is that they use the fronds to wrap themselves in while sleeping on their backs. The kelp aids as an anchor keeping the animal from drifting into the surf. At one time before being hunted so much sea otters came ashore to have their pups just as seals and sea lions do. Now they rarely come ashore for any reason. Hunters naturally found it easy to club a sea otter on land, but these marine mammals caught on quickly and receded to ocean waters for protection. Now sea otter pups are born directly into the sea. Some guides list June as the month for sea otter births and others say it occurs in winter. At Morro Bay, it appears that births occur at any time during the year. Very often mothers and pups are viewed floating along in bay waters. Pups are buoyant and
cannot dive when young. They are left floating on the surface sometimes wrapped in kelp while the mother dives for food. She is never gone too long and returns to the pup. Often seen in large rafts in some waters, sea otters really don’t form long-term pair bonds. Mating can be a painful encounter for females as the male sea otter will grab her, biting into her nose as they mate. If you see an otter with a mottled brown and pink, sore looking nose, you can bet it is a female. After mating a single pup is born and remains dependent upon its mother for about a year. After rediscovery of the sea otters in Big Sur, the Southern sea otter received protection through the Endangered Species Act of 1977 and is also covered under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. They are considered a keystone species in that they consume sea urchins which are extremely detrimental to kelp forests. During the 1980s numbers of Southern sea otters topped out at around 1,700 individuals. Their numbers rose to about 2,300 and stayed there for many years. However, the good news is sea otter populations have increased statewide. Over 3,500 individuals have been counted covering a stretch from just south of Halfmoon Bay to Gaviota State Beach. If you walk the Embarcadero somewhere around the south t-pier you may see a large raft of otters there. They also hang out near Target Rock across from Morro Rock in the kelp beds there. Mike Harris, Senior Environmental Scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says in 2010 there were about 10 sea otters in Morro Bay. Last year they counted 36 adults and nine pups.

left the east coast in the 1960s to study at the Theatre Academy in Los Angeles, and made a career in theatre and television. After meeting fine art photographer Robert Frank, de Wilde he embraced a dramatic life change into the world of photography with Frank as his mentor. De Wilde lived in a creative environment called “The Farm” back in the sixties, and based his work there while he traveled the world photographing love-ins, anti-war demonstrations, and the counterculture of the times. De Wilde shot one of the most famous images in rock ‘n’ roll, Jimi Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire, and in between those moments, he’s photographed everyone from Chuck Yeager to Bob Hope. The world renowned photographer will focus his upcoming show on the 1960s Big Sur landscapes versus the contemporary day. The recent photos of Big Sur will take a look at what has changed in 50 years and what has stayed the same. In the words of Gallery at Marina Square Co-Owner Gregory Siragusa, the work will be a look at “what’s eternal and unchanging.” Siragusa said one of the most compelling pieces is a photograph of one of de Wilde’s bellbottomed friends leaping in the air in complete bliss, as a beautiful glance north shows a pastel 1960s-era beach. He compares this photo with a digital shot of the same location, side by side, as contrast. De Wilde’s artistic goal is to strike an emotional chord in the viewer, presenting both modern and classic photographic of landscapes and life in coastal California.
“Explore More” Jeremy Baker Baker is an Atascadero artist and family man who works at the Photo Shop in San Luis Obispo. His experience working with the public and professional photographers every day gives him the advantage of knowing every aspect about every camera, including the chemical versus electronic processes. He collects vintage cameras and cherishes film. He shoots on a big, heavy 6x6 Aero Hasselblad and develops his work in one of those rooms once known as a darkroom. His mastery of the technical aspect of photography shows in his work, and his upcoming show will explore the nuances in nature and life. “Jeremy is really, really good at creating images that bring people to an emotional place, but he also has an idea that comes back to what we understand photography has always been. ”Gallery Co-Owner Greg Siragusa said. “Somebody will not only imagine themselves there but imagine the state of mind that they would be if they were in that place.” Baker utilizes several different types of top of the line cameras when making his incredibly detailed art, and said, “Nothing connects me to the spirit of the photographic process like shooting film.” Baker finds it difficult to fit his photography into one genre. “Whether a scenic landscape, a star-filled night, the story kept by rural and urban decay, or trying to reveal the soul of a person through making their portrait, I am in constant search for the beauty life holds.” Gallery at Marina Square is located at 601 Embarcadero, Suite 10, Morro Bay, CA 93442.
