MORRO BAY — It is one of the most scenic roads in the world and people from all countries come here just to drive it. What am I talking about? Highway 1, of course. It’s been too long for those of us residing on the Central Coast deprived of setting out on a sunny day to drive the length of Highway 1 from Morro Bay to Monterey. The landslide at Gorda cut us off from our scenic neighbors to the north for too long. But now the road is open once again thanks to the colossal efforts of Caltrans and all the constructions Morro Bay’s newest and hippest music shop workers who have remade the road. 875 Main st. across from the Siren next to Sabettas Highway 1 was originally built Pizza. Jennifer Little, Morro Bay Tourism Director invited locals to bring their versions of classic cars to town and stage them throughout the tour route in town. “I truly believe this is the first and last time that we’ll ever be able to see this incredible string of vehicles come down Highway 1 all together,” Little said. Local classic car owners answered the call beginning at 3 p.m. when Gerry Lane pulled into the Front Street parking lot with his 1934 Turquoise-green Ford. This writer pulled in right next to him with my silver-grey 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser and then we were joined by Morgan Cooley who arrived in his 1965 bright yellow Plymouth convertible. It wasn’t too long before the whole gang came driving in — Denny and Linda McAlister brought their 1932 Ford Roadster, a beauty painted in red and black. Denny, a former race driver, built the car. Christian Drew Solaris brought his 1953 Chevy that is plastered with signage about the Pan American Road Race, an event he drove in during the years 1989, 1991, and 1994. The race, that was extremely dangerous, was eventually discontinued. A real beauty showed up as Paul Cueni drove in and parked his shiny maroon-colored 1940 Buick Convertible. Rounding out our group was Steve Tross’ 1932 Black Chevy Delivery Van. Tross owns an Auto and RV shop on Park Street where he works on his classic car. MORRO BAY — The 12th Annual Avocado and Margarita Festival kicks off on Friday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. with the third annual Taste of the Grove. Taste is an exclusive homage to the Central Coast avocado held outdoors at a beautiful, rustic avocado grove turned wedding venue on Highway 41. Just 250 lovers of the green fruit will enjoy farm-to-table cuisine and hand-crafted wine and spirits plus complimentary access to the weekend’s main event, The Avocado and Margarita Street Festival the next day, Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Festival organizers report that, “The 12th annual Saturday event really steps it up on the food front. We’ve been asked for more space, shorter lines, and more avocado dishes and we made it this year’s focus to deliver on those requests.” Food vendors like the Central Coast Women for Fisheries will be bringing back their famous seafood stuffed avocado and vendors like Higgie’s World BBQ and Libertine Brewing Company are coming in with new and exciting dishes like smoked avocado, avocado stuffed with bacon, eggs and cheese, and mac and cheese with pulled pork and spicy avocado creme. If that doesn’t make your mouth water, maybe avocado chocolate mousse cups, soft and chewy double chocolate avocado cookies, or hot and fresh donuts with avocado drizzle are more your speed. There’s always room for dessert! Saturday’s 12th annual Street Fest features a larger footprint this year with the same number of vendors, 70 percent of which are food and beverage. Cannabis bliss is available, just call MOM BY RUTH ANN ANGUS OF MORRO BAY LIFE

LOS OSOS — Megan Souza and her partner Eric Powers thought a market offering organic produce would be a great business, so they began Megan’s Organic Market thinking they might set up on the coast, but after doing some research they realized an organic produce market probably would not be financially effective for them. Since they already had the business name, they turned to a different crop — Cannabis. With medical marijuana legal, the couple set about planting a crop in native Los Osos soil high atop Clark Valley. The native clay-loam soil and bountiful well water contribute to a high-quality product. Powers is the farmer in the business while Souza and her staff of women run the delivery business. “Right now, we are solely a delivery business and we deliver throughout the county,” Souza explained, “but we have applied for a permit to open a retail shop.” Medical use of cannabis requires a doctor’s prescription and clients obtain them from their family doctors or they can apply online. The online program takes a patient through a variety of health questions that can define both the reason for the request and the applicant’s current health situation. Then a group of doctors reviews the request which can take a day or so. If there are any questions the applicant would receive a call from the doctor reviewing the case. Once a verification is received via email, the client can call Megan’s Organic Market to schedule a delivery. “Our mission is to improve the health of our community by providing safe and reliable access to quality organic medical cannabis,” Souza said. What is rare about this business is the fact that they grow their own product and prepare it. Most delivery

Megan Souza and Eric Powers and Smokey, the cat at the cannabis farm in Los Osos. (Contributed photos) services and store fronts buy from a variety of growers that use numerous methods of cultivation “We don’t use pesticides or petroleum derived fertilizers,” Souza explained. “We use only Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) certified pest control and disease management

products and fertilizers. Megan’s Organic Market is the only service provider in San Luis County that offers organic cannabis that is verified by SC Labs. Why does someone turn to medical marijuana? Most clients rely on it for pain control. Souza’s clients are primarily older people, especially women, who suffer from chronic pain. The use of cannabis rather than opiates has cut down on the opioid addiction problem. Another use is for battling depression and many veterans use it to deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Legally medical marijuana can only be smoked or ingested on private property. It also should not be used inside a vehicle. Basically, clients should follow the same laws that apply to alcohol and keep the product in a sealed container while in a vehicle. Megan’s Market advises waiting 12 hours after consuming cannabis before driving. There are other regulations and you can find these on their website www.megansorganicmarket.com. Some of the cannabis quick facts are that there are two types of product, CBD that is non-psychoactive and THC that is psychoactive. CBD is used to reduce inflammation, regulate sleep, reduce anxiety and treat PTSD. THC is used to treat chronic pain, induce sleep, inspire creativity, and improve sex. Souza says that a person can take one or the other or a combination. Doses are up to 10 milligrams, but Souza advises clients to start slowly even as low as 2 mg to find out how one responds to the dose. Both Souza and Powers are dedicated and involved in community actions. They clean up a section of Highway 1 and attend Neighborhood Watch in their area. They have paired with SLOTalkBroadcasting and produce a podcast entitled “Fresh Harvest”

that provides information, stories and insights about cannabis. Plans are to get the retail business going in Morro Bay and then proceed to open markets in other towns. The first on the list will be at the SLO Open Market Project going in on Higuera and Tank Farm Road. People interested in learning more or obtaining medical marijuana can call 805-235-6678. Megan’s Organic Market is located at 1000 Quintana Road, Morro Bay.

First-time visit to Morro Bay Estuary Project by EPA Regional Administrator BY RUTH ANN ANGUS FOR MORRO BAY LIFE

MORRO BAY — Mike Stoker, newly appointed Environmental Protection Agency Administrator for Region Nine, began his first 90 days by getting out on the road to begin visiting each regional area. Stoker who was appointed by President Donald Trump in May has hit the road running and his visit to the Morro Bay National Estuary Program is the first time a Washington appointee has come here in the 23 years existence of this local program. Stoker was a Santa Barbara County Supervisor from 1986 to 1994 and brings to this new job his belief that it is his responsibility to “go to where the people are.” Stoker was joined on his visit by Suzanne Marr, Environmental Protection Specialist and Press Officer, and Maria Soledad Colvino from the Regional San Francisco Headquarters. Region Nine encompasses a huge territory from California, Nevada, Arizona, all the way to American Samoa, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, and military

all of which Stoker is on tour to visit. The Environmental Protection Agency is an independent agency of the United States federal government for environmental protection and was founded in 1970 by President Richard Nixon. Of late the present Washington EPA administration has had its difficulties resulting in the resignation of its former Director, Scott Pruitt. There also have been numerous cuts and amendments made or proposed to be made by the current President of the United States and the Republican administration, most of which are seen as backward steps by environmental groups throughout the country. Stoker was quick to point out during his visit to the Central Coast that he has nothing to do

with setting policy and that all of that is done in Washington. Whether or not he personally believes in climate change or global warming was not answered in this visit, but he did state that he is in favor of the United States conquering the problems dealing with emissions that lead to global warming. However, he also stated that without our country cutting a deal with China and India to also work on this problem, not much progress in eliminating harmful emissions will be successful. On this visit Stoker was hosted by Lexie Bell, Director of the Morro Bay National Estuary Program and several local government and civic leaders also joined on the tour. A boat tour

The MBNEP is a separate non-profit and does fundraising, and writes grants, to meet the dollar for dollar match necessary to be eligible for federal funds. A visit to Cal Poly University also took place to see the Rainwater Collection Facility that was constructed and that channels rain runoff into collection bases for other uses. Since this is located where cattle are fed, this facility keeps runoff from that area from entering into creeks that eventually make their way to the estuary and the ocean. “I saw how important work in the watershed is to the estuary,” Stoker commented, “and realized

He stated that there are four areas of concern for him. The first is at the Mexican/United States border where there is a problem with sewage from Mexico entering the States and his intention is to pursue this problem with the people in Washington. He further stated that he has primary interest with the 148 indigenous tribes. Stoker said that out of this number only 30 tribes have access to safe drinking water. He went on to say that Pacific Island tribes have major issues with sewage, drinking water, infrastructure and contamination stemming from World War II. He also mentioned a success story involving a Superfund at Iron Mountain in Northern California where six tons of metric

New Street Fair and Farmer’s Market has successful opening

View of Morro Bay Street Fair and Farmer’s Market on Morro Bay Boulevard. (Photo by Ruth Ann Angus) BY RUTH ANN ANGUS FOR MORRO BAY LIFE

MORRO BAY — Sunny Saturday, Aug. 4 saw residents and visitors enjoying the brand-new enlarged Morro Bay Street Fair and Farmer’s Market. New food and merchandise vendors now line the streets of Morro Bay Boulevard below Monterey and Main Street from the boulevard to Harbor Street. Vendors on the boulevard were placed on one side of the road leaving ample walking space for the public. More produce vendors are now available for the public to buy locally grown vegetables, fruit and nuts. To open this extended Street Fair, Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce offered entertainment by

professional circus performers from Aeroaerial. Beautiful stunts were performed by members of the troupe high up just below the branches of a large eucalyptus tree. Also on hand were the Morro Bay High School Cheerleaders working the crowd selling advance tickets to their booth at the Avocado and Margarita Festival. Purchasers will be able to redeem the tickets for one “Chips & Guac” at their booth at the Festival. The cheerleader group staged an impromptu cheering session for the camera. “We are so grateful to the Morro Bay Chamber for allowing us to have a booth at the Festival,” commented Director Michele Fellows. side-of the-road show with my PT Cruiser! Turns out I had stumbled upon the Auto-Hang-Out Car Club that has 35 members and meets every Saturday morning at the end of the Front Street Parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon. More friends dropped by as we set up chairs to wait for the Dream Drive car caravan to arrive. When it did, we clapped and waved, and I took 307 photos!

I was especially happy to be able to photograph my old boss Governor Jerry Brown’s 1974 blue Plymouth. A private “Golden Hour” event from 5 to 8 p.m. featuring celebrities, musical entertainment, car rally and food and wine celebrating the reopening of Highway 1 was held in the parking lot of Morro Rock, but this writer couldn’t make that event. However, I was not undone having enjoyed the companionship and talk with the Auto-Hang-Out Club, not to mention Morro Bay’s classic cars.

Create more peace and joy in your life

I

was listening to someone today who was so upset about several things going on and none of it was “hers” or “today”. There was emotional upheaval attached to things in the past, worry and anxiety about the future...and all of it about other people. She was not in a place to hear me gently tell her this, but it was a good reminder for me. How many times do we get all upset and twisted emotionally about past, future or people’s stuff? The past can’t be changed, and the future isn’t here yet and neither one can be controlled no matter how hard you try. Other people’s choices are theirs, not yours and they will learn the lesson and/or live the consequences, regardless of what you say or do. You only have control of right now, this moment and trying to do differently only brings you pain, suffering, anxiety and stress. When the mind starts winding itself into knots, the body follows. Many times, when I ask clients what is going on in their life, they are really telling me all the reasons their body is uncomfortable. What better way for the body to get your attention than PAIN! Anxiety, rapid pulse, high blood pressure, headache, stomach or bowel problems, anger, sadness, illness and the list goes on of how many ways the body cries for help. Eckhart Tolle wrote a book, “The

Power of Now”, that I tried to read several years ago but at that time it didn’t make any sense to me and I set it aside. Two years ago, I picked it up and the message resonated. I was in a place to understand his words and incorporated it into my meditation practice by reading and contemplating each idea prior to meditating. At the time I began reading this book I had a lot of anger and sadness and was reliving past events that only kept my cycle of pain and anger going. Being able to stand back and realize what I was doing to myself, was the first step in healing the pattern and letting it go. I have this posted in my kitchen where I can see it from almost anywhere in my house (I have a tiny house): “Accept what is, Let go of what was, Have faith in what will be.” Reading that every day has helped me focus on the present and step off the carousel of reliving old hurts and creating negative futures. Acknowledging how we create our own suffering, is the first step in breaking the old habits and creating more peace and joy in our lives. Local events celebrate Peace Day BY RUTH ANN ANGUS OF MORRO BAY LIFE

Every year on Sept. 21 the United Nations sets aside the day as a day of international peace. Many events take place around the world. In the United States the interdenominational peace organization Pace e Bene and the national group Campaign Nonviolence extend the celebration for the entire week surrounding International Peace Day. This year those dates begin on Sept. 15 and end on Sept. 23. Local churches and peace and action groups are joining the celebration this year with events for the public. Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the City Council meeting at 6 p.m. Mayor Jamie Irons will join with Yes We Can Peacebuilders and Campaign Nonviolence issuing a proclamation that the City of Morro Bay joins the Nonviolent City Project to work towards a more peaceful and nonviolent environment. The proclamation states that for peace and nonviolence to prevail the citizens and the City of Morro Bay will work together to foster a culture of peace through education and sustainable economic and social development to foster and promote equality between all and respect for human rights. The proclamation supports Sept. 21 to be International Peace Day in accordance with the United Nations Resolution A/RES/52/13 and for September to be designated as Peace and Nonviolence month henceforth. music programming in local schools, helped Rotary Club of Morro Bay build a Santa House for the holidays, and provided no cost business assistance workshops and entrepreneur training in the business community. Festival admissions are recirculated back into our community and we are really proud of that at the Chamber.” Tickets for the Saturday Street Festival are $7 and available on Eventbrite
