15th Annual Olive Festival

A festival of tradition

W

elcome to the 15th annual Olive Festival! The Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association has proudly brought the Olive Festival to the Paso Robles Downtown City Park for 14 years, and it will again Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can taste the diversity in each drop of olive oil produced in the surrounding areas’ various micro-climates. Nearly 100 vendors will be set up in the Downtown City Park and and more than 2,000 visitors are expected to attend. The event is family-friendly and open to the public, as are all Paso Robles Main Street events. Main Street Director, Norma Moye, said she’s like to keep it that way. “It’s a wonderful day, bring the family,” she said. “We will have plenty of things for the kids to do. You will learn all about olive oil, make some friends and enjoy other great aspects of the Paso Robles community.” The event begins with the blessing of the olive oil followed by olive oil tasting, food demonstrations, and crowd pleasers like olive oil ice cream. A wine and beer stroll will take place at partici-

pating Paso Robles Downtown wineries and breweries. Tickets for the wine stroll can be purchased all day at the Information Table. The festival will feature vendors ranging from growers and producers to artisans and caterers. Taste and compare local olive oils and learn about the olive world for many of the vendors. Visitors will have the opportunity to taste 100 percent USDA Grade extra virgin olive oil, which is arguably different than the less stringent European olive oil standards. Olive oil will also be available

to purchase at many olive oil vendor stands. This year, olive oil lovers will get to participate in the Taste of the Olive event, where local downtown restaurants provide olive-themed appetizers for enjoyment. The finger foods will then be judged by the public and two celebrity judges, mayor pro-tem Steve Gregory and City Council member Fred Strong. Festival goers are encouraged to visit downtown restaurants and retail shops the day of the festival, many of which will be providing olive-themed food specials

and sales. The whole event kicks off the Friday before the festival at the Allegretto Vineyard Resort by Ayres in Paso Robles with the Pre-Olive Social Mixer, which starts at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature wine and beer along with the announcement of the Olive Oil Competition awards, tickets for the event are $25 and can be purchased at the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street office. Come enjoy a day at the park and learn about our local olive oil industry while supporting local craftsmen!

Olive Festival Artists Hellie Blythe LOCAL ARTIST

Hellie Blythe spent all of her childhood, teen years, and adulthood creating things two and three dimensional, and has sauntered into the forth dimension to write several books. Hellie is the youngest of three children raised by their parents on a farm and at the ocean during World War II. Her education was long, serious, and excellent, encompassing arts, math, history, language, philosophy, agronomy, trapeze work, boat handling, cartography, hunting, shooting, stalking and fishing. She is aquainted with metal-working, glass torchwork, glass blowing, and can play “Happy Birthday” in Japanese on the violin. She recently retired from set and scene painting for Pioneer Players’ stage productions. Swinging from and dangling on ladders is precarious for old bones. Every year Hellie travels to Limoux, France to study art. Hellie’s most serious dilemma is a lack of time to accomplish everything she would like to create. There are never less than 6 paintings in various stages of development haunting her studio. Hellie and her husband Hye have been married over 60 years. 50+ have been spent here near Paso Robles, raising their own 4 children, 4 grandchildren, and one great grandson.

Laure F. Carlisle LOCAL ARTIST

Laure Carlile has a B.A. and M.A. in art from San Diego State University with an emphasis in sculpture and has a California lifetime teaching credential. She has taught art in elementary, middle school, high school, adult education, workshops and classes for groups and museums. Laure taught herself how to make sterling silver jewelry and returned to SDSU to study jewelry making. Laures titanium pieces were shown all over the United States, Canada and Japan. She won numerous awards, was juried into the San Diego Designer Craftsmen Association and her work was featured in numerous books and magazines. Laure and her husband moved to Paso Robles in 2005 after a short time living in Alabama. She decided to start painting and developed a unique style using watercolors and acrylic. Laure’s paintings have been included in the California Watercolor Association National shows, International Society of Acrylic Painter shows, the Central Coast Watercolor Society Regional shows as well as many others and she has won numerous awards. Laure designs the posters for the Paso Robles Olive and Lavender Festivals and is on the Main Street Association Board. Laure was juried as a founding artist in the Studios on the Park in paso Robles and taught the 2nd grade watercolor classes and the 4th grade sculpture classes for the Art Smart program, which provides art to most of the local elementary schools. She has signature membership in the Central Coast Watercolor Society and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. Laure currently has a studio in Paso Robles.

his year’s Olive Oil Competition will be headed by chair Alexandra Kicenik Devarenne, an international olive oil consultant, writer and educator, and owner of CalAthena. Devarenne has written on many aspects of olive oil for both popular and scholarly publications and is the author of the reference book “Olive Oil: A Field Guide.” She has been an official olive oil taste panel member since 2003 and has been involved in organizing and teaching olive oil courses at domestic and international venues since 2004. Devarenne has served for a number of years as a chair, judge and advisor at numerous olive oil competitions at home and abroad, including Olive Japan, Australian Olive Association International, Athena International, Napa Valley, Cal State Fair and others. Devarenne’s olive oil work started with research at the University of California Cooperative Extension and, although freelance since 2007, she continues to cooperate with the scientific community. She is co-founder of Extra Virgin Alliance an international nonprofit trade association dedicated to olive oil quality. The EVA works to inform the trade and consumers about olive oil, to connect consumers and quality extra virgin olive oil producers, and to celebrate the rich culture and culinary use of this extraordinary food.

Art Kishiyama Award for Excellence

T

his year the Central Coast Olive Growers Association is restructuring the annual Olive Oil Competition. The award for best in show, now called the Art Kishiyama Award for Excellence, named for local olive grower and former CCOG president Art Kishiyama, will be given to the recipient with the best overall olive oil at the competition. Awards will be presented at the Pre-Olive Social Mixer the Friday night before the festival, May 4, at the Allegretto Vineyard Resort by Ayres. Art Kishiyama grew up locally, went to San Luis Obispo High School and graduated from Cal Poly’s Agriculture program. Kishiyama served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years and retired as a colonel. He then went to work for Walt Disney Imagineering where he helped build international theme parks and attractions. Kishiyama came back to his agriculture roots when he and his wife, Lynn, moved to Creston in 2002 to start an olive farm where he could grow olives and produce artisan, extra virgin olive oil. The retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life appealed to the couple, who now operate their farm, Olio Nuevo, where they used to also breed and raise alpaca, in the peaceful hills of California’s Coastal Valley. Kishiyama has been involved in much

Ariel photo of Kishiyrama’s farm “Olio Nuevo”. of the growth of the Central Coast olive oil industry, including facilitating law change on the county level concerning olive oil production and the formation of the olive oil advocacy group CCOG, where he served as president for a number of years. When Kishiyama came into the olive industry, there were no advocacy groups to educate or inform lawmakers about the particulars of the industry. According to Kishiyama, producing high-grade olive oil used to be much more difficult on the Central Coast, because olive oil production was limited under certain land use plans. The land use plans limited where and when olive oil could be produced, simply because of how olive oil production was being defined. “You could have a crush facility on an olive orchard if you were crushing for yourself, but in most cases that’s not economically viable because the investment is so large,” Kishiyama said. “That was one of the things I was doing as the president of the Central Coast Olive Growers, to get the land use plan changed by going before the board of supervisors. We got the rules changed, now they are similar, but not identical, to the wine industry. That’s something we accomplished.” At the same time, the state was seeing changes in how it handled olive oil production and, according to Kishiyama, groups were forming around the state to

help promote local olive oil, while making the rules around olive oil more stringent, keeping out lower quality olive oils. “The state established the California Olive Oil Council and it had never existed before,” Kishiyama siad. “It was designed to promote California olive oil the same way California wines were promoted years ago and gained international stature through that promotion.” The local group CCOG was established to educate and advocate for Central Coast olive oil, while finding avenues to promote and sell their product. Kishiyama said the Olive Festival served as the perfect venue for the growing industry and that having the festival made selling their olive oils successful. “The Olive Festival became the key venue to sell olive oil and educate the public about the quality of olive oil on the central coast,” he said. Kishiyama has been involved in the Paso Robles Olive Festival since its founding and has participated as a vendor nearly every year. He also said he was honored to have the Competition’s Best in Show award named after him. “I’ve never won a best of show - I guess the best I’ll do is get one named after me,” Kishiyama said. “I feel pretty proud that they’re naming this after me, because I could never win one on my own. It’s very competitive.”
