WELCOME On behalf of all of us at Studios on the Park, we invite you to join us at the Central Coast’s finest arts celebration. Since 2009, PASO ARTSFEST has been at the heart of our efforts to educate and inspire through the arts. We at Studios are thankful to be part of the fabric of this extraordinary Central Coast community. Paso Robles is a place renowned for its award-winning wines, innovative cuisine, welcoming California country style, and now with ARTSFEST, an up-and-coming arts scene. Indeed, ARTSFEST is a prime example of Paso Robles’ unique, can-do spirit – a synergy derived from our generous sponsors, hard-working volunteers, talented artists and performers, and our enthusiastic attendees of all ages. As our guest, you will be captivated by the work of acclaimed artists. The Signature Exhibition, Wet Painting Sale & Auction, Outdoor Fine Art Show & Sale and Local Stars Quick-Draw provide four spectacular ways to enhance your own collection of fine art and fine craft. Your purchases throughout the weekend will support Studios on the Park and our essential arts services. ARTSFEST is our biggest fundraising event of the year with a portion of all sales directly benefitting our arts access and education programming for local children and adults. At this year’s ARTSFEST, the most important medium is you. Paint yourself into the scene: dine with an artist at the Artmaker Dinner, explore Studios and the Signature Exhibition, watch a masterpiece come to life in the Quick-Draw, celebrate creativity in the Kids Art Smart Zone, shop ‘til you drop in the auction and artist canopies, take a selfie with a stiltwalker, discover your inner artist in CREATEspace, marvel at the Sand Masters, relax with a glass of wine in the Bar & Lounge, get your groove on in the Pine Street Promenade, and experience the legendary collection of rare and ancient works of art at Hearst Castle. This picture-perfect weekend will enchant, indulge, enrich and renew you; we don’t want you to miss a moment! Barbara Partridge Festival Chair, PASO ARTSFEST Board President, Studios on the Park

STUDIOS ON THE PARK Since opening our doors in 2009, Studios on the Park has become a centerpiece for the arts in San Luis Obispo County and beyond. One of the most effective visual nonprofit organizations on the West Coast, we are dedicated to providing a creative, educational, and transformational experience to enhance understanding and appreciation of the visual arts. We realize this commitment by making the creative process available to the public and have already touched more than a quarter of a million lives with arts programs and events that excite, engage and inspire. That is an amazing achievement, and one that you, our advocates, make possible. Thank you! ARTSFEST is our most important fundraising event and its proceeds will bring our essential arts services to over 90,000 children, teens, and adults this year alone.

MICHAEL PEARCE KEYNOTE SPEAKER

8 PASO ARTSFEST 2015

Dr. Michael Pearce PhD, MFA is an English figurative painter who lives in Ventura County, California and is an Associate Professor of Art at Cal Lutheran University. While on the surface Pearce’s paintings are romantic escapes from the hard edges of daily life, celebrating colorful flowers and beautiful people, there’s a mythic depth to them that reveals the artist feeling his way out of the negativity of postmodernity by drawing upon archetypes and allegories from centuries-old emblem books and alchemical symbolism. Pearce digs for conceptual themes in the paintings that capture his audience by encouraging their individual imaginative interpretation of the events he has painted. There’s meaning here – a reconstruction of ideas bigger than ourselves – that makes these paintings feel greater than their already large size. In addition to his successful career as a painter, Pearce has a strong background in scenography and installation art. In 2008 he completed a PhD at Plymouth University, submitting a dissertation on Neolithic British ritual art and architecture. He teaches at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, where he is responsible, with his friend Michael Lynn Adams, for organizing The Representational Art Conferences (TRAC). He is editor of the Proceedings of the Representational Art Conference, and is author of “Art in the Age of Emergence.” In his inspiring keynote, Pearce will answer questions about zombies and discuss elephants, Prince Charles, and why Stonehenge is not as completely useless as it might appear. Big changes are happening in 21st century representational art and Pearce will speak to what makes them unique, and why they are cause for optimism in our troubled age.
