LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT John Kegebein

he Kegebein name is almost synonymous with the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. When John Kegebein was laid off from a job at Marinovich Cold Storage in 1963, he applied for a maintenance job at the fairgrounds, marking the beginning of a more than 50-year career. Later, Kegebein served as fair manager for several years, a position his son, Dave, now holds. Kegebein, who grew up on a dairy farm in Crystal Lake, Ill., now serves as the CEO of the Agricultural History Project, and was one of the founding members of the organization more than 30 years ago. He said he was “totally surprised” when he found out he was chosen for the chamber’s Lifetime Achievement award. “I just do what I have to do,” said Kegebein, who was also named Man of the Year by the chamber in the mid-1990s. “The community has been good to me, and I try to give back in any way I can.” He praised his family and fellow volunteers, saying they make everything he does worthwhile. “I try to keep busy and keep healthy,” Kegebein said.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR Mary Bannister

ary Bannister retired as general manager in 2016 after 17 years with the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency. Bannister was a certified engineering geologist when she started at PVWMA in 1999, and helped the organization weather a storm of controversy, trouble and lawsuits. This included financial difficulties and groundwater supply issues. Bannister stabilized the agency even as she oversaw the adoption of a Basin Management Plan update and fee structure to support it, in advance of the state’s new laws regulating groundwater. In addition, she worked with the City of Watsonville to develop a Recycled Water Facility that provides more than 4,000 acre-feet per year of irrigation supply to coastal growers. When she announced her retirement, Bannister said she wanted to spend time with her family, grow dahlias and help at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Bannister is involved with the Santa Cruz County Fair, and leads the Clydesdale horses with the Agricultural History Project during the fair and at special events.

MAN OF THE YEAR Harry Wiggins

Boy Scout leader for 17 years, Harry Wiggins has mentored dozens of young men, many of whom have become Eagle Scouts. A lifelong Eagle Scout, Wiggins began Troop 505 for the Boy Scouts of America in 1994 as a response to escalating gang violence in Pajaro, which culminated when three young people were shot to death. He is an organizer of the Pajaro Emergency Response Board. For 15 years, he has been a member of Pajaro/ Sunny Mesa community services. Wiggins is a member of the Pajaro Citizens Action Committee, which promotes safety improvements and sponsors a cleanup day. He is a member of Friends of the Pajaro Park, and a member of the Oversight Committee to the Successor Agency of the Monterey County Redevelopment Agency. Wiggins serves on the Pajaro Valley Water Management ad hoc Basin Management Committee. He was named Veteran of the Year in 2012, and was named to the Watsonville High School Hall of Fame in 2005.

or more than 25 years, Pajaro Valley Printing, located on the corner of Freedom Boulevard and South Green Valley Road, has provided a variety of digital printing, offset printing and other services. Essentially, “anything on paper,” said Sean Parker of Pajaro Valley Printing. The full-service printing and copying center also provides services for a number of local nonprofits, such as giving permanent signage to Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services, printing out the local Veterans Day program pro bono, and providing sandbags for seniors in Bay Village. The business has served major corporations such as Granite Construction to students in elementary school working on their school projects. “It is super exciting,” Parker said on Pajaro Valley Printing receiving the Business of the Year award. “We were surprised to find out. We are excited for the opportunity, and it will be a fun event.” And they do it all with just three employees: owner Dan Carrillo, Nanette Nelms and Parker. Carrillo, a Watsonville native who was named the chamber’s Volunteer of the Year in 2010, purchased Pajaro Valley Printing in 1989. He is a longtime Rotarian who is involved in many local causes, too numerous to list here.

ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR Pajaro Valley Historical Association

uring its 77-year history, the Pajaro Valley Historical Association has served as a repository for Watsonville’s memories. The organization’s volunteers spend hours categorizing and storing memorabilia such as photos, vintage clothes, newspapers, yearbooks and hundreds upon hundreds of other items; the flotsam and jetsam that tells the story of South County. PVHA Board chair Judy DoeringNielsen said she was “shocked and amazed” when she learned of the award. “I said, ‘Thank you so much,’” Doering-Nielsen said. “‘This is wonderful news, this is terrific.’” “It’s a fabulous community organization, and it’s wonderful that its being recognized,” she added. Doering-Nielsen said the award is a testament to the people who work there. “The thing that makes PVHA work is the fabulous volunteers that put in countless hours,” she said.

EVENT OF THE YEAR Fire in the Sky

ire in the Sky began as an idea city officials had to get the public to the Watsonville Municipal Airport and highlight the role it plays in the region. Watsonville did not have an official fireworks show in many years, and city officials did not know how the community would react. As it turned out, the response was overwhelming. More than 6,000 people attended the inaugural Fourth of July event, and about an hour before the fireworks began, officials had to shut down the airport to vehicles, as the parking area had reached capacity. “We are thrilled to receive the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce award for event of the year for the Fire in the Sky Airport Open House event,” Assistant City Manager Matt Huffaker said. “The whole community came together to make this event a success, with over 6,000 people in attendance.” In the hours leading up to the 20-minute fireworks show, Fire in the Sky included formation flyovers, a screening of the film “Angry Birds,” food trucks, aircraft displays and more.

‘SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY:’ SUPPORTING SMALL, LOCAL ESTABLISHMENTS While many shoppers in the United States eagerly await the day after Thanksgiving, dubbed “Black Friday” for sales and deals, others decide to wait an extra day to begin their holiday shopping. And they do so on a much smaller scale. “Small Business Saturday: Shop Small,” a movement to get shoppers back into purchasing from local, often family-owned and -run businesses has gained momentum in recent years. Even with the onslaught of large corporate stores and online retailers, many have reverted back to supporting small business. “These are the people who support the community,” said Shaz Roth, CEO of the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.

“You support these shops, and they support the local schools, the local sports teams. When you spend your money here, you’re investing in your entire community.” Sponsored by American Express, this year’s “Small Business Saturday” will take place on Nov. 24. In 2017, East Lake Village Shopping Center in Watsonville held a “Small Business Saturday” event, with a good deal of the center’s business joining in on the festivities and urging shoppers into their stores with sales. Roth joined Think Local First’s Membership Director Andrea Konrad in live broadcasting the event through KSCO, interviewing attendees.

Bontadelli selected as Farmer of the Year

teve Bontadelli has been selected by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau as the 2018 Farmer of the Year. The award is presented annually to farmers who have contributed beyond their normal farming duties to help the community, according to the Farm Bureau. Bontadelli was born and raised in Watsonville and graduated from Fresno State in 1997. He is a fourth generation farmer who began working for family farming operations in 1985. Bontadelli helped create packing/shipping company Pfyffer Associates, which handles marketing of products produced by family farm and other area growers. He currently serves as general manager of the company. He also currently serves as vice president of Brussels sprout company Bontadelli, Inc. The presentation was made during the Farm Bureau’s 101st Annual Meeting & Dinner, held at UCSC’s Cowell Ranch Hay Barn in Santa Cruz on June 21. The board of directors said they felt it was appropriate to honor Bontadelli because of his leadership in the Brussels sprout

industry, along with his involvement in the community, which includes countless volunteer hours, giving money and raising large sums of money for a variety of purposes. Bontadelli is a former president of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau and president of the nonprofit educational organization, Agri-Culture. Last year, he started up a local scholarship program that raised approximately $60,000 for Community Foundation Santa Cruz County. The theme of the meeting was “Agriculture – North to South, Keep Santa Cruz Thriving.” A presentation on this theme was made by Thomas Broz, president of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, and Daniel Press, professor of environmental studies and executive director of the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UCSC. Broz also highlighted some of the accomplishments of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau over the past year. The Annual Meeting also included the election of new members of the board of directors.

wo giant trucks were being loaded with fresh produce at Lakeside Organic Gardens’ new shipping and storage facility, while three others waited their turn on a Monday morning in early May. This occurs daily from 10 a.m. until around 10 p.m. at the sprawling building. An estimated 60 fully laden, full-sized trucks – about 3,600 full pallets – leave the facility per day, with produce shipped throughout the U.S. and into Canada, Lakeside Marketing and Communications Coordinator Bryant Hammer said. “There is a lot of product moving through here,” he said. “Sales are very robust.” Shipping is the final step of a process that typically begins no more than a few days earlier, when workers pick the produce at farm parcels throughout Watsonville. From there, Lakeside’s 60 products are brought to the facility at 25 Sakata Lane, where they are washed, iced and boxed, and then brought into a massive chilled warehouse. There, the products wait their turn to be loaded and shipped. “It goes from the farm to the cooler within three to four hours,” Hammer said. “Some of this can be on a truck within five hours.” The 50,000-square-foot facility was completed about six months ago, replacing the former one on Holohan Road that stood at 16,000 square feet. The new building offers several loading docks to allow several trucks to be loaded at once. The company recently saw an increase in business after people were sickened by romaine lettuce contaminated with e coli bacteria. That problem did not affect Lakeside, thanks to the company’s organic farming practices, Hammer said. And so customers desperate for the lettuce contacted Lakeside, hoping it was in stock. Still, all Lakeside employees recently went through a refresher course on keeping themselves and the products clean, Hammer said. “You’re constantly paying attention to minor details,” he said. Lakeside Organic Gardens, which is currently the largest family-owned and operated organic grower-shipper in the country, grows in both the Pajaro Valley and the Imperial Valley in Southern California. Within a year, work will begin on another large building that will include administrative and sales offices. Both buildings will feature 100,000 square feet of solar panels on their roofs, and will be home to Pajaro Valley Laser Leveling and Pajaro Valley Irrigation, both part of the Dick Peixoto Family of Companies.

First Wine, Beer & Art Walk sells out Photos & Story by: TARMO HANNULA

The first-ever Wine, Beer & Art Walk took place in downtown Watsonville on May 12. The sold-out event drew at least 300 people to town for a taste of what the Pajaro Valley is about, from local wines, craft beers and non-alcoholic beverages to local businesses showcasing their wares and services in a casual, let’s-get-acquainted atmosphere. Put on by the City of Watsonville and the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, the event also brought the public face-to-face with a variety of art and live music by local artists and musicians. “I’ve never been to downtown Watsonville,” said Steve Bonner, who came to the event with his wife, Teresa, from Los Gatos. “I had no idea about the historic aspects of this place. I’ve always been curious and now I can see what great place this is. It’s a new adventure.” City Councilwoman Nancy Bilicich, who showed up to lend a hand, said she was meeting

people from out of town that were curious about the city. “We’ve had people come in from Los Gatos and San Jose, people that just want a taste of what we have here,” she said. “Attendance has been good and people seem excited by this event.” Indeed, packs of people set out around the Main Street corridor, after picking up their tote bag that included a walking map and a ticket book for all the venues. “I am so happy with the turnout today,” said Deputy City Manager Tamara Vides. “It’s just great that we sold out and that there are so many people that want to learn about our city. We have a lot to offer.” Tom Lopez of Santa Cruz said he found it “well worth the drive” to check out the event. “I usually don’t drive out to Watsonville but this sounded pretty interesting,” he said. “I thought the photos in the ticket booklet were really helpful. I learned a lot about the downtown

businesses and some of the cool history. There were a lot of businesses I never really knew about. We had a good time; it was worth it.” With the price of admission, guests received a complimentary wine bag, wine glass and a passport that will allowed them to sample one pour at 17 different locations throughout downtown

he Cabrillo College Watsonville Center offers college level and basic preparation classes in general education and career technical (vocational) education. Students can earn an associate’s degree, a certificate or skills for career advancement, or prepare to transfer to a fouryear institution. Financial aid information and academic counseling is available in English and Spanish. Services such as tutoring and help with computer skills are offered as well. The Watsonville Center classrooms are all equipped with “smart” classroom technology. Students have access to fully equipped computer labs.

Accreditation Cabrillo College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and adheres to the standards of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, and has been approved by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges and the California State Department of Education.
