THE COVER
T
he COVID-19 crisis has thrown most facets of society for a loop, but perhaps none more so than the arts. Theaters are shut down. Galleries have closed. Creative people, as well as venue staff are out of work. As someone who sings in a community choir and works part time at a local theater, the current shelter-in-place JOHANNA MILLER order has hit me hard—both financially and emotionally. My choir has been desperately trying to find a way to meet remotely, but things have been rocky. I’m acutely missing my theater job, where I would welcome patrons, work with performers and techies backstage and soak up the creative, positive atmosphere. For this week’s cover story, I spoke with three people who work at venues across the county. From historic theaters in Santa Cruz to Watsonville’s own art gallery, all are reeling from the closures. But all of them also have hope. They are trying to remain positive despite everything going on. How can you help? Think about donating to local arts organizations. Instead of demanding a refund for a canceled show, think about donating that money to the venue, if you can. None of us want these places to shut down for good. Once things improve, we want to be able to go see that concert, view that art exhibit, enjoy that new play like we used to. Let’s do what we can to support our local arts scene through this challenging time.

odd, and sad to experience the unexpected halt of such a big part of society.” Cabrillo’s Music and Theater Arts departments were halfway through a run of “Considering Matthew Shepard” when the school suspended all in-person classes and live performances. “My heart sank when we had to freeze sales and begin issuing refunds,” Berry said. “I had seen the performance the week prior and was completely in awe. I had so much hope that so many more people… would be able to see, hear and feel [it’s] very important message.” The college has suspended 14 other events and postponed
sales for the Cabrillo Stage Summer Musical Festival. Berry said phone lines have been filled with hundreds of messages, many asking for refunds but others expressing sympathy for those dealing with the aftermath. In Santa Cruz, longtime Rio Theatre owner Laurence Bedford is also dealing with an uncertain future. “We closed March 12,” Bedford said. “It was a hard decision… We had sold-out shows on both the 13th and the 14th. But we didn’t want to be that one venue that took a chance. We are high-capacity, so there’s really no goofing off there.” The Rio opened its doors in
1949 as a movie theater and now serves as a performing arts venue, with the occasional film screening. With no events assured, Bedford is looking for ways to keep the historic building maintained and staff paid. “Everyone is affected,” Bedford said. “Artists, promoters, professionals… it’s mayhem. We hope to rebook people, but no one knows when they can get back on the road.” Pajaro Valley Arts had just finished installing its latest exhibit, “Campesinos: Workers of the Land” when things shut down. fter the outbreak of COVID-19 prompted shelter-in-place orders last week, scores of performing arts venues and museums across Santa Cruz County have closed. Staff and artists are now out of work, and locally-owned venues are currently figuring out their next step. Cabrillo College Box Office Specialist Shawna Berry said she never imagined something of this magnitude. “I have worked in box offices for more than 20 years and have never seen such high numbers of venues closed,” Berry said. “It’s

THE MIXING BOWL
Baking with kids: Drop biscuits participate in the cleanup. The ingredients are made for a group of four so that there is a biscuit for everyone. Younger children often, although not always, need help with measuring. Adults will need to work the oven, do the set up and most likely, the cleanup. When I had a mixed age group, I divided the group by abilities into a measurer, a dry ingredient mixer, a wet ingredient mixer and finally, a combiner and spooner. Double recipe amounts for more. This is a bare bones recipe so have the butter and jam ready for when they are done.

rop biscuits are easy to make, taste good and can also be an educational experience. A chemical reaction happens when the soda in baking powder combines with water. Carbonic acid forms and dies off to form carbon dioxide bubbles that cause the dough to rise when heated in the oven. This recipe can also be made into a math problem by doubling the recipe. The best thing about “learning by doing” is that if you make an error, it is evident in the results. For a few years I taught a cooking class at Pajaro Middle School. The school had one of the few real home economics rooms leftover from a time in history when teaching sewing and cooking were part of the educational curriculum. Room 9 had four full kitchens with each one having a
stove and a sink surrounded by about 12 lower and upper cabinets with five or six drawers that at one time held everything one would need to cook. An additional teaching kitchen was at the front of the room. There were two adjoining rooms, one with two refrigerators and storage and another, with a washer and dryer. I taught math, science, language arts, social studies and an elective, cooking, in that room. The rear of the room used to have a few banks of about a dozen sewing machines which were removed in ≠≠the early 1990s. This recipe has been field tested in groups with ages 4 to 14. After I retired, I taught at Campus Kids Connection at Delaveaga Elementary for a while. All ages needed to be reminded to wash their hands thoroughly and that they will also need to
1 cup flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt Wet ingredients: 2 tablespoons cooking oil ½ cup water or milk 1 teaspoon of lemon juice (optional) Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Lightly oil a baking sheet. Get out the butter and jam. In one medium bowl, measure and then whisk the dry ingredients together. In another smaller bowl, measure and whisk together the wet ingredients. When the oven is hot, quickly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix with a wooden spoon for about 15 seconds or so until most of the wet and dry are mixed into a dough. It is okay if here are a few floury lumps. Working as fast as possible, with a large spoon, drop the dough off the spoon with your finger onto the oiled baking sheet. This recipe will make about four medium-sized biscuits. Put into the oven and bake for eight minutes. They are done when the tops and bottoms are slightly brown. Bake five minutes more if necessary.

Schitt’s Creek (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube TV, others) The first season of the Canadian sitcom “Schitt’s Creek” premiered on CBC Television five years ago, and I was none the wiser of it until a friend recommended it late last year. Boy, was I missing out. The series, created by Eugene Levy and his son, Dan Levy follows a formerly wealthy family who are forced to relocate to Schitt’s Creek, a small town they once purchased as a joke. A show about a rich family dealing with not being rich is not something I would immediately
Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (Now available for digital purchase) I have not stopped singing praises for “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” since I saw it in theaters last month. The film tells the story of Harley Quinn, the ex-girlfriend of The Joker, nemesis of Batman in Gotham City. Quinn (Margot Robbie) is on the run—after the break-up, she is suddenly a target of revenge for people across the city. She and three other women, who for much of the film are at odds, team up to save a young girl from narcissistic crime lord Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). The hilarious yet heartfelt film had me hooked from start to finish, with its playful choreography, costumes and cinematography, and overarching theme of redemption and female empowerment. The film’s digital release date was pushed forward to this past Tuesday and I for one am excited for a rewatch.
Top-notch cast? Check. Incredible cinematography? Check. Rousing pacing and story? Check. “The Outsider,” an adaptation of Stephen King’s 2018 novel of the same name, is a superbly done 10-episode series that sinks its teeth into you—pun intended—with its procedural, who-done-it beginnings and then makes you question reality with a twist all too common for the legendary horror wordsmith. Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Ready Player One”) plays the role of everyman detective fantastically and his supporting cast, including Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”) and Mare Winningham (“St. Elmo’s Fire”), matches him step for step.
It’s Bruno (Netflix) If there was ever a quarantine palate cleanser it would be this short, funny and easily digestible story of a man and his cute little dog, Bruno. Starring relative newcomer Solvan Naim, “It’s Bruno!” is an adaptation and expansion of his well-received 2015 short of the same name. Naim, playing Malcom in the eight-episode series, walks the streets of Brooklyn with his adorable companion. They aren’t looking for trouble, but trouble, it would seem, finds them during their everyday visits to the grocery story and surrounding parks. Dog lovers beware, this series might cause small bursts of anxiety.
Frances Ha (Netflix) This movie is a gem. It can be broken down scene by scene in a
film school course about character building, and it is also a rewatchable masterpiece about 20-somethings that fills a room with levity. Gretta Gerwig (“Lady Bird,” “Little Women”) and Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story,” “While We’re Young”) co-wrote “Frances Ha.” Gerwig also stars as the titular character and Baumbach is behind the camera as the director. That pairing makes this film feel extremely personal. It’s as if one was TONY reading their daily jourNUNEZ nal entries from their times as struggling artists in the fast-paced, nobody-givesyou-anything entertainment scene in New York.
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (Netflix) Looking for something that you can throw on while cooking dinner or having your breakfast? It doesn’t get better than this. “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” is a free flowing one-on-one interview show starring Jerry Seinfeld, who, as the title would suggest, drives around in whimsical, exotic cars with various comedians to go grab a cup of joe. There are 84 episodes—all around a half-hour or so—featuring entertainers such as Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Seth Rogen, Martin Short, Larry David, John Mulaney, Kate McKinnon and John Oliver, just to name a few. This show is a fantastic watch because you can leave it running in the background while you’re folding clothes or cleaning the house and listen to it as a podcast, or you can watch it attentively and see some of the world’s top out-of-thebox thinkers and storytellers talk about today’s issues.

struggle crossing multiple worlds— one that has the potential to change the very nature of humanity. The adaptation is beautiful, with a strong cast (Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy and Lin Manuel-Miranda are just a few), and fantastic effects. It does justice to the text’s deep philosophical and theological themes, though I do hope more of the story’s complex subjects will be explored in future seasons. So far, the series has impressed me enough to keep tuning in.

afe Ella owners Erika Conrad and Jennifer DeVault say they are hopeful that their business will persevere through the COVID-19 crisis. The twin sisters, who took over the small cafe on East Lake Avenue from Ella’s at the Airport owner Ella King last year, said that despite ongoing challenges, they are doing what they can to keep serving customers. “Those who are coming in have been so nice and thankful that we’re open,” DeVault said. “And
we’re always glad to see them, too.” Cafe Ella is one of many cafes and restaurants across Watsonville dealing with countywide shelter-in-place and statewide “stay at home” orders, which were put in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19. As more people stay at home for both work and play, eateries have seen a drastic drop in business. “Since last Tuesday… things have slowed down significantly,” Conrad said. “We’ve only been getting [about] ten customers per day, and a few DoorDash orders.” As such, the cafe’s six employees are not working, leaving Conrad and DeVault to work full-time six days per week.
“That is probably the hardest part,” DeVault said. “Two of [our employees] are single moms. They really need the money. It’s sad, but right now we just can’t pay them.” Currently, Cafe Ella is offering to-go food and drink orders, DoorDash and catering for groups of more than 10. There are still offices across the city where people are working, albeit in smaller and spread-apart groups. DeVault said that those larger orders have helped them stay afloat. “We are hopeful that this won’t take us down. We don’t think it will,” she said. “There’s lots of government support we’ve been looking into.” DeVault and Conrad have been
in contact with other business owners in Watsonville, including King and the owners of Red Apple Cafe on Auto Center Drive. “Everyone is kind of in the same boat,” Conrad said. “We are all just playing it by ear.” Suppliers have also taken a hit. DeVault said that the cafe’s bread and pastry suppliers are cutting back staff, and on a recent trip to a restaurant supply store, they found it gutted of paper goods. “Even with a seller’s permit, there was just nothing there,” DeVault said. Despite the challenges, the sisters say they understand the importance of the county and state orders. “Our mom is a nurse, so we know how serious it is,” Default explained. “These precautions have to be taken. We don’t want the virus spreading. We definitely don’t want a bunch of people in [the cafe]. But it’s nice to have some delivery, some takeout orders to keep us going.” Conrad added that regular customers have been trying to help, as well. “One of our regulars… kept adding items to her order, trying to give more support,” she said. “Santa Cruz County loves small business. They understand its importance.” The sisters say they are eager for things to improve not only for their business but also so they can see their old customers and employees. “Be safe, stay at home as much as you can,” DeVault said. “But we can’t wait till this is over and we can see everyone again.” For information visit cafeellawatsonville.com. home. The opening reception for “Campesinos” plus the first two events are canceled, and the next two are pending. The organization hopes to extend the exhibition, moving others further into the year. “Sculpture Is,” the annual show at Sierra Azul Nursery and Garden, has already been postponed until July, and the annual member show until August. “It’s a domino effect,” said Exhibit Coordinator Hedwig Heerschop. “Things just keep changing. We’re doing what we can.” PV Arts usually works with Pajaro Valley Unified School District to bring students to the gallery on field trips and participate in art
shows. During school closures, the organization’s Education Committee is developing an online curriculum and virtual tours of exhibits. “We miss our patrons and friends, and especially the students,” Heerschop said. “We miss those little faces, full of energy and eager to learn.” PV Arts is still taking donations through its website at pvarts.org.
“There is so much work involved in putting these shows together,” she said. “We hope people stay engaged. We have so many more plans. The arts must go on.” Bedford said there has been a great deal of miscommunication about what will happen next. “We don’t want people to give up,” Bedford said. “Just take a step back… figure out what comes next.
