David Phillips
9am King City Relay For Life Dedication
D
avid Phillips, born and raised in Southern California, came to King City to establish his dental practice in 1977. He and his wife Janice reside in Lockwood where they raised their two children, Josh and Rebecca. Life was good in the Phillips family in 1998, the kids in high school, Janice teaching, David busy at the dental practice feeling great and unaware that anything was wrong. And then came the unexpected diagnosis of stage four melanoma, “maybe six months”, and a desperate need to do something. Fight it. It’s been fifteen years. A commitment was made, a battle was fought, and a new life has unfolded. No room for stuff that doesn’t matter, things that don’t bring joy, issues and relationships that damage rather than build up. David is now an avid cyclist (does seven thousand miles a year on a bike count as “avid”?), a proud grandparent, and still a happily married and happy dentist. “Fight on” or as he prefers, in reference to the bike, “ride on.”

Letter from the event chairs
W
hen we began with our first Relay and a goal of $15,000 we were called a baby Relay, now on our fourth year we have a goal of $87,000 and King City’s Relay is a giant. With this year’s fundraising, the King City Relay will reach a milestone: $250,000! This town has a knack for exceeding expectations and the money raised is a representation of the true nature of our wonderful and supportive community! Breaking records and surpassing goals is something that has put King City on the American Cancer Society’s map as a town who came to not only fight cancer but to win!!! Entering my final year as the Event Chair for King City’s Relay For Life has been a bittersweet adventure. I had no idea what I was stepping into when I first started, and I think I learn something new each day. One of the things I have learned is that it’s impossible to bring something of this magnitude to life without a fantastic team. I’m fortunate enough to have a group of dedicated and compassionate people on my Event Leadership Team that make our hard work a fun adventure. From our three Tri-Leads to the newest Team Captains, the volunteers who have dedicated their time and efforts have been nothing short of amazing. Team work is always the answer, but before leading a team, I had to make sure I knew exactly what kind of Relay I wanted to have. Before becoming the Event Chair for last year’s Relay For Life I had a pretty clear understanding from a team captain’s perspective. In 2013, I gained a regular committee chair perspective, something that carried some interesting changes from simply leading a team. However, having the opportunity to chair the event has been well worth my time and efforts. That being said, the road hasn’t been easy. As an Event Lead the responsibilities are endless, and there are some nights that sleep doesn’t come easily due to the thoughts running through your head. Relay takes over your entire body. You are incapable of having any conversations that don’t pertain to relay because one of your greatest challenges is to continuously motivate not just a person or a team but an entire town. For me it’s easy, but not

everyone shares my experiences. Who isn’t motivated to save lives? Relay For Life gives me hope and it builds my pride and when I have run myself out of inspiration all I need is one Relayer to inspire me yet again. Imagine hearing the words, “you have cancer”. Imagine the fear you might experience. Imagine knowing you have to go to chemo or radiation for a month and you don’t know if it will help you. Imagine someone in your family going through it. Now imagine the amount of sleep you would get. Isn’t one 24 hour period a small price to pay to show support and honor for those who have gone through the horrors of cancer? That’s why I do it. That’s why my Co-Leads do it. After an entire year of meetings, planning, and asking for support, one day truly takes your breath away and you become a part of something magnificent. With that in mind, I want to sincerely thank you all for sharing this event with us. The Event Leadership Team has worked so hard to bring you a Relay that makes you proud to be from King City. We have also raised much-needed funds to hopefully help find a cure for this awful disease. The American Cancer Society, along with the team captains and Event Leads also help educate the community on how to prevent cancer and where to turn if you do hear those three awful words. Our first year we raised almost $40,000 and in 2014 we shattered our goal and raised over $84,000. After this year’s Relay there is no doubt we will be able to say we have raised over a quarter of a million dollars towards the fight against cancer in our four years of participating, and here’s the best part: WE AREN’T GOING ANYWHERE. We are very proud to be so involved, and we feel extremely fortunate to have had so much support, and I am truly grateful for such a beautiful event that celebrates lives while allowing us to share a moment with someone we have lost. Thank you to everyone brave enough to fight this fight. Sincerely, your 2015 Relay For Life Event Lead and Tri-Lead Team Brandi Schmidt-Garza, Trish Frudden, Carly Hook and Jeff Hinderscheid

M
y name is Debbie Miller Nelson King. I was born in Salinas, CA after my family moved here from Oklahoma. I lived at The Mee Ranch for two years with my parents Bob and Mary Miller, and my sister Peggy Miller Martella, my brothers Ron, Bob and Jim Miller. We then moved to San Ardo where I was raised until I was 18. I then ventured to live in King City in 1974. From the time I was in the 4th grade to 12th grade, I worked at my parents grocery store, Miller’s Market. To this day it is still Miller’s Market. I started working for the King City Union School District in September of 1973, where I still work today as a Bus Driver/ Custodian. I’m married to my best friend Paul King. Believe it or not, my other best friend is my children’s dad John Nelson. We have four children and four grandchildren. Son Charles, Becca and Ryan, and Emma Nelson. Daughter Shannon (Nelson), Nick and Kodi, and Kasthon Rapp, son Joshua King, and daughter Marlena (King) and Michael Arbrun. Paul and I enjoy riding our motorcycle and driving our 1955 Ford pickup. Although, our favorite thing to do is spend time with our grandchildren, which is the best medicine there is. Grandchildren give you strength that you didn’t know was possible. In April of 2002, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer with lymp nodes involved. After many surgeries, chemo, and radiation here I am. I am now a 14 year Breast Cancer Survivor. There is always HOPE; HOPE for another birthday. I preach Mammograms and self-exams. This is such an honor, deserved by so many. In my journey I had three very important men in my life. Paul, my caretaker, Dr. Doug Sunde and Dr. John Hausdorff. Without them and my family, friends, and children’s love and support, I would never have been able to fight the fight!

Thank You T
hank you for allowing us the opportunity to be the event chairs in the fourth year of the Relay For Life in King City. It has truly been an honor and inspiration to see the community rally together with compassion and help share the toll of hard work. We have enjoyed this experience very much and enjoyed all of the close working relationships we have built with many of you. Relay for Life has truly given us the opportunity to reflect on the blessings we have received in our life time and we are very grateful for this experience. All of you have been our inspiration – our survivors, our caregivers, the volunteers who made this event happen, and, most of all, the teams who came together to walk and raise money for the ACS. The money you have raised is crucial to helping the American Cancer Society fulfill its mission of “Research, Education, Advocacy and Service” for cancer patients and their families. These dollars will help fund the groundbreaking research that will result in the new drugs that will treat cancer, give cancer patients a better quality of life, and one day find a cure for this disease. It will save lives by helping the ACS educate people in how to detect cancer earlier -- and even prevent cancer in the first place, through lifestyle choices. It will provide valuable tools and resources to the families and friends who support those who are battling cancer.
Together we are creating a world with more birthdays!! So, from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU -- Thank you all for coming here today, thank you for your willingness to fight for those who have cancer and for adding your momentum to this crusade. Thank you for being a part of a community that makes a difference in the lives of survivors and those who love them. On behalf of your Event Leadership Team, the Team Captains, the American Cancer Society, and the 13.7 million survivors in the United States today, thank you for supporting the 2015 Relay For Life in King City. See you next year!! Sincerely, Your Relay for Life Event Lead and Tri-Leads Brandi Schmidt-Garza, Trish Frudden, Carly Hook and Jeff Hinderscheid
Because of you, there are more survivors today than ever before: 13.7 million in the US alone and 1,382,200 survivors in our state of California.

Emotional Support
Appearance-related Side Effects Look Good Feel Better® workshops help women with cancer manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment. Trained volunteer beauty professionals teach simple techniques on skin care, makeup, and nail care, and give practical tips on hair loss, wigs, and head coverings. Each registered program participant receives a complimentary beauty kit to use during the workshop and to take home. The program is a collaboration of the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, and the Professional Beauty Association.

working together to save lives Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States among men and women combined, yet it’s one of the most preventable.
It is estimated that one in three adults over the age of 50 – about 23 million people – is not tested as recommended. Join the national effort to get 80% of adults ages 50 and older regularly tested for colon cancer by 2018. 80% by 2018 is a National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable initiative in which more than 140 organizations have committed to eliminating colorectal cancer as a major public health problem and are working toward the shared goal of 80% of adults ages 50 and older being regularly screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.

As a trusted community organization, you have the opportunity to educate and rally your members and stakeholders to help prevent colon cancer or find it early, when treatment is most effective.
Here are five things that you can do to reach 80% by 2018: 1. Partner with neighborhood organizations, physicians, hospitals, and local public health officials to make 80% by 2018 a communitywide goal. n Rally with other local organizations to prioritize this effort. n Promote colon cancer testing at walk/runs, health fairs, and other community events. n Download videos, handouts, postcards, etc., from cancer.org/colon, cdc.gov/cancer/dcpc/ publications/colorectal.htm, or nccrt.org/about/ public-education/blue-star-marketing-kit.and share this information with your constituents. n Set a goal of partnering on 80% by 2018 with five other community organizations or businesses over the next six months.

2. Learn your community’s colon cancer testing rate, and set a goal for improvement n By assessing where you are, you can measure and track your community’s progress and celebrate success! n You can also use this assessment to understand which groups in your community are not getting tested. This can help you target your efforts to reach those who are most in need of hearing the message about getting tested. n The National Colorectal Cancer Evaluation 101 Toolkit1 offers advice about how to conduct a community assessment, lists state and national testing data that is available, and suggests ways to adapt those tools for local use. 3. Leverage local dignitaries/leaders, such as the mayor, a local news anchor, or a respected religious leader, to communicate with those in your community who are less likely to get tested and those who have a higher risk of colon cancer: n People less likely to get tested are those ages 50 to 64, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, rural populations, men, and those with lower education and income. n African Americans are at a higher risk for colon cancer, have higher death rates, and are diagnosed at a younger age than any other population. n Work with others in your community to develop a plan to get colon cancer testing education and resources to members of these high-need groups in your community. Local American Cancer Society staff,2 local health departments, and comprehensive cancer control coalitions3 are some partners who will want to work with you!
