2017 BOARD PRESIDENT’S LETTER O
n behalf of a dedicated staff, hundreds of community volunteers, and the Fair Board of Directors, I would like to WELCOME you to the 2017 Santa Cruz County Fair.
The 2017 Fair theme “Fly me to the Fair” urges you to come to the fair soon and often. It’s never been better! The Fair continues to improve and you’ll see the ongoing upgrades to the Fairgrounds plus expanding choices in entertainment, food and fun for the whole family.
If you are at the Fair have a wonderful time and come back again later this week. If you are contemplating coming to the Fair there is no time like the present.
Enjoy, Bill Barton - President Santa Cruz County Fair Board
2017 CEO’S MESSAGE It seems like my usual response to the comment that there are only so many weeks until Fairtime is “But wait, I still have projects to finish!” We go from wrapping up the previous Fair to getting ready to open this year’s showcase with seemingly little time in between. When you come out to the Fairgrounds I believe you will notice the grounds are even more beautiful than the year before. With the help of hundreds of volunteers and a hard
working staff, many improvement projects have been completed. It would be impossible to count the hours our volunteers have given over the past 12 months to make our Fair possible. This year, we will welcome more than 70,000 friends and neighbors to a great week at the Fair. We will begin our week with two full nights of motorsport excitement and that means two nights of Monster Trucks. The first being Quad Wars and Monster Trucks on opening night, Wednesday, September 13th followed by Monster Trucks
and Motocross on Thursday night, September 14th. The Monster Truck dubbed “Time Flys” driven by Kelvin Ramer will be crushing a motorhome at the end of each night’s show. Tickets for both shows are available on the Fair’s website. Gorgeous grounds, smiling faces, thrilling rides, your favorite Fair foods along with tasty new surprises--come see the best our county has to offer. Be a part of the 2017 Santa Cruz County Fair! Dave Kegebein, CEO Fair Manager

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE FAIR
Floriculture T
he annual Santa Cruz County Fair is a nonstop series of interesting activities AND a collection of very interesting people. One of those interesting people happens to head the Floriculture Department. Bettie Crandall can trace her love of the Fair back to the 1940’s when she attended as a child with her parents. That love is reflected in each of the beautiful plants that fill the Floriculture building and the adjacent gardens. Bettie has a long history at the Fair, showing and running various departments, including Floriculture in the ‘80’s. Her crew includes Kevin and Karen of Corralitos Gardens, great dahlia enthusiasts, Carol Kitayama from Kitayama Brothers Nursery, and the folks from Mountain Feed and Farm Supply representing the San Lorenzo Valley! In addition to the usual showing of cut flowers, dahlias, succulents and potted plants, Bettie is reaching out to our future, the children, to create gardens (with cash prizes!) and planting of wagons (provided!). And of course adults and kids are welcomed to come to the Fair to do garden displays, arrangements, cut flower and potted plant entries and more! Please contact Bettie or a member of her posse to reserve a garden plot or wagon - contact information is available online at the Fair’s Entry Guide page.
This year we will feature daily educational demonstrations of: ✽Flower arranging, casual and formal design ✽Pollinator Gardens ✽Beekeeping ✽Dahlia culture on the Central Coast ✽ Aquaponics, including a demonstration of hydroponic and aquaponic (with fish providing “nutrients”) techniques and upclose viewing of operational systems ✽ Drought Tolerant Gardens by the Water Conservation Coalition (watersavingtips.org) ✽ Tours of the Fair’s Fabulous Dahlia and Annual Flower Gardens
The schedule will be available at the Floriculture Building daily. 8

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE FAIR
Heritage Hog Program T
Arielle Spotswood
he Heritage Hog Program is both a fundraiser supporting improvements on the Fairgrounds as well as an educational scholarship. Each year the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation selects a local 4-H, FFA, or independent student with experience raising livestock for the Fair, who is enrolling into a college or other higher education program. This student then spends the summer raising a hog provided by the Foundation. The hog is exhibited at the Fair and sold at the end of the Junior Livestock Auction with the proceeds, combined with other donations, used by the Foundation to fund the scholarship and for needed improvements on the Fairgrounds. The Foundation is proud to announce the selection of Aptos 4-H member Arielle Spotswood as this year’s recipient of the $2,000.00 Heritage Hog Scholarship. The
ACTIVITIES
Foundation congratulates Arielle on her accomplishments raising and exhibiting lambs, hogs, steers, chickens, and rabbits during her years in 4-H! She is currently in a two year program at Cabrillo College on a path toward Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in fall of 2018. She ultimately plans to attend Veterinary School in Scotland with a goal of becoming a large animal Vet. Arielle will raise this year’s Heritage Hog and bring it to the Fair to be auctioned September 16 at the Junior Livestock Auction. Proceeds from the sale along with added donations from community members and businesses will support future scholarships and be used by the Fairgrounds Foundation for improvements on the fairgrounds.
AROUND THE FAIR
Handspun / Handwoven T
he Handspun / Handwoven Department will be showing off each day of the Fair from opening to 6 PM. Demonstrations will happen outside the Codiga Museum at the “Spinning Pavilion” and inside the museum where weavers will demonstrate on various looms including the “Weaver’s Delight.” On Saturday the department goes international as they participate in WWSIP – World Wide Spin in Public Day. This means plenty pf hands on opportunities for visitors, especially kids who stop by during the day. Also on Saturday it’s the ever popular WASCAR competition. This will be the ninth annual and all are invited to come cheer on their favorite spinner.

Camel Rides
A Small Caravan of Camels will Ride into the Santa Cruz County Fair Fair visitors usually walk over to the livestock area expecting to see pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and other familiar fair animals. And perhaps to enjoy a guilty pleasure, a milk shake at the Clover Deli. But camels? Returning to the Santa Cruz County Fair after an absence of several years, visitors will have the chance to ride these animals that are normally found in the desert. The camel ride track will be located between the Pig Races and the Livestock Show Arena and the ride includes an opportunity to stop for a photo op. Two or three people can ride one of the camels at a time, depending on the amount of
Register-Pajaronian.com
space available on the saddle. The weight of the riders does not matter much, as camels are incredibly strong beasts of burden. In fact, one camel is capable of carrying half of its body weight! Contrary to what many people think, the humps of camels are not filled with water. Instead, the humps are filled with dense fat. This fat can hold water for up to three weeks. This adaptation allows camels to survive for long periods of time without water in the desert. In addition, camels do not spit or bite like many people believe. This opportunity to ride camels is one more reason why the Fair is fun for the entire family.

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE FAIR
Yesterday’s Farm F
or 31 years the Agricultural History Project (AHP) has been presenting Yesterday’s Farm during the annual Santa Cruz County Fair and this year will be an expanded version of the exhibit. The mission of the project is to engage guests in the experiences of day-to-day life of yesterday’s farms and ranches in the Pajaro Valley. AHP has built a Farm House Porch to do demonstrations that will provide a glimpse into life at that time including sewing, weaving and crocheting, music and more. They will also have Silva draft horses and AHP carriages on display. Demonstrations in the area will include Kids-Drive-a-Tractor and at 3 PM each day they will be baling hay with a horse powered hay press and at 4 PM children and adults will be able to drive the draft horses around the gazebo. In the Codiga Center and Museum you will see a new exhibit on the History of the Lettuce Industry. This exhibit has been researched by Pat Johns and produced by Watsonville resident Ron Haedicke, Videographer. Claudia’s Kitchen will be back again teaching people how to bake from scratch, no bread from a bag. Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association will again demonstrate some of the antique engines and equipment used many years ago to wash clothes, grind flour and pump water. In the Porter Building will be a display of horse drawn equipment, wood working and blacksmith tools. And in the Borina and Snyder Barn you will see a display of restored tractors and farm equipment. A schedule of the daily events will be posted on an easel at the front of Codiga Center and Museum. Please take the time to stop by Yesterday’s Farm while you are at the Fair and reminisce a little and think about how easy we have it today.

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE FAIR
Senior Day I
t’s true that the annual Santa Cruz County Fair is a perfect place for young families but on opening day, which is Wednesday, September 13, Seniors Rule! It all happens on the Amphitheater Lawn and begins at 12:30 to the music of the South Bay Swing Band followed at 1 PM with the senior’s only Ice Cream Social and special senior contests. “We look for someone with the most birthdays or who traveled the furthest to come to the Fair, things like that” explained organizer Loretta
Ice Cream Social
Estrada. The South Bay Swing Band provides a nice backdrop with the music of their lives and it all makes for quite a convivial gathering. Why even dancing has been known to break out when the band kicks it up a notch.
To recap the festivities – the downbeat for the South Bay Swing Band’s first set is at 12:30 and they’ll start scooping ice cream at 1 PM with the senior contest starting shortly thereafter. The band returns for their second set at 2 PM.

ometimes you just need to get out of your stroller and run around. And if you are a toddler, and your parents are near Paddy Smith Park during the 2017 Santa Cruz County Fair, you can! The inaugural Kiddie Korral will be set up in beautiful Paddy Smith Park. With green grass, shade trees, activities, toys, rocking chairs, picnic tables and a changing area, the Kiddie Korral provides a safe fun place for parents to let their young children run and get some of that “kid energy” 14

out. Then the entire family can go out on the grounds and spend more time enjoying everything the Fair offers. Organizer Woody Ledbetter reiterates “This is not a baby sitting service but a safe place for parents to let their young children be children.” She added “Everyone including our young guests should be able to enjoy the Fair at their pace and sometimes that means getting out and running around.”
The Kiddie Korral will be open at the following times:
Wednesday, September 13 Thursday, September 14 Friday, September 15 Saturday, September 16 Sunday, September 17

t’s back for the third year and the event has grown too large for one night to hold it. Monster Trucks and Motorcycles have moved to Thursday night and a new twist will pair with the big trucks on opening night. Monster Trucks and Quad Wars will fill the Race Track on Wednesday, September 13, starting at 7:30 p.m. These motorsport events bring the thrill of huge trucks, powerful quads, and daredevil motorcycles all going airborne. And there is a special connection to the Fair; the monster trucks are the passion of Watsonville resident Kelvin Ramer. Ramer got his first pickup truck in high school, and he would take it to the local sand pits and play. Ramer says he’d drive through water, over jumps, get sideways, and just have fun. He was the first at his school to put a lift and big Super Swamper tires on his truck. After high school, he moved to Arizona to attend Universal Technical Institute. While there Ramer competed in student drag races and also did his first truck pull. After graduation he moved back to California and started going 4-wheeling with local offroad clubs. Ramer says that he has been to most of the off-road spots in California, including the Rubicon, Hollister Hills 26
Fly Me to the Fair
and Pismo, and participated in annual events like Mud-In-YerEye. He continued competing in more truck pulls and also a few mud bogs. Ramer has raced 80cc Shifter Karts, and earned a Kart track championship in 2000. How did he get hooked on big trucks? Well to hear him explain it, “The first time my wife and I saw a Monster Jam truck, we thought it looked like a lot of fun!” He added,“In 1984, we started buying parts and building a Monster Jam truck of our own. After a series of setbacks Ramer tried for the third time and luck was with him. “We saved, bought parts and built the Monster Jam in our spare time. The Monster Jam truck took 7 years to complete, from 1997 to 2004. Our first Monster Jam show was Anaheim in January, 2005.”
So it’s Monster Trucks and Quad Wars on Wednesday, September 13 with Monster Trucks and Motorcycles close behind on Thursday, September 14. Both shows roar into action at 7:30 p.m.

JAMES WESLEY
FRIDAY EVENING AT 7:30 PM ON THE AMPHITHEATER STAGE O
n the main Amphitheater Stage at the Santa Cruz County Fair a genuinely nice guy and great country musician will bring something special to the Friday night Fair crowd. James Wesley performs at 7:30 PM. “I’ve always been a big believer in tradition,” declares James Wesley. “A lot of the old ways are the best ways: family, God, treating people right, doing what you’re supposed to do. I think it’s time to come back to what’s real. That’s what country music is about.” James Wesley puts those core values into his music with a whiskey-smooth voice and a timelessly winning way with a great country song. Wesley sings directly to his audience about real things that profoundly affect real lives. And from his small-town upbringing to his blue-collar work ethic, he creates a deep connection. “I know there’s more people out there than just me who want to hear something that grabs you and makes you go, Wow, that’s me—that’s how I feel, that’s my day, that’s my family,” he explains. “When you swing a hammer every day, when you’re out there doing what you have to do, you learn a lot of compassion for the people who do it day in and day out.” Wesley grew up in tiny Mound Valley, a community of about 200 in Southeastern Kansas. He first discovered country music via his grandmother’s record collection, which included heaping helpings of classic crooners like Marty Robbins, George Jones and Ray Price. “We’d go over there on the weekends,” he recalls. “She’d have the console set up and the records stacked up and we’d listen to them as they dropped.

Those guys back then, they could sing. I thought, that’s what I want to do.” His mother was the first to notice Wesley’s own talent for singing when she overheard him belting out his favorite songs behind his bedroom door. “I thought if I shut my door I blocked everybody out, but evidently I didn’t block Mom out,” he says with a chuckle. “She heard me and said, ‘I’d love to have you sing in church.’ So that’s what I did.” Soon he taught himself to play guitar on an old Stella practice model. “I’ve got it to this day,” he says.“You can still see where I wore down the D, C and G chords on the fretboard.” By his late teens he was singing in local nightclubs and beginning to think about making music his life. “I’d sit in my bedroom and stare out of the window and dream of being out there, getting to see the world,” he remembers. His first move in that direction was to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he performed in a nightly music and variety show. There he met his wife, Mindee, with whom he now has two young children and finally set his sights on Nashville. “I could have stayed in Eureka Springs for the rest of my life, but I just had to chase the dream,” he says. “I had to follow my heart.” He and Mindee sold their house and almost everything in it, rented a moving truck and headed for Music City. Once there, Wesley took a construction job to make ends meet and began learning the ropes of the Nashville music business. He met hit songwriter Rodney Clawson and producer Dan Frizsell, and the three began recording together. Their work caught the attention of Broken Bow Records, which signed Wesley in
SantaCruzCountyFair.com
December and quickly released the very first song on his original demo, “Jackson Hole,” as his debut single. The tune (penned by Clawson and Monty Criswell) immediately began racing up the charts, driven by listeners who loved its vivid story of fleeting love in a snowy setting. “Jackson Hole” offered fans an upfront introduction to the more vulnerable aspects of Wesley’s personality. “Growing up with three sisters, I’ve got a sensitive side too,” he says with a smile. “But I’m proud that I have that side, that I’m not callous. The only thing calloused about me is my hands.” The breakout success of “Jackson Hole” instantly validated the enormous risk Wesley took in uprooting his family from Eureka Springs for an uncertain future in Nashville. “My family has seen all the ups and downs,” he says. “There’s been a lot of hard work. There’s been times it wasn’t easy, and they’ve been there the whole time. They’re great.” It also meant that Wesley’s days of construction work were over. “Thank God I get to put the hammer down, at least for a while,” he says with a laugh. “It’s nice to be able to do what I love to do.” James Wesley hopes to do what he loves to do for a long time to come. “I want to be in it for the long haul,” he says. “I want to do those songs that everybody wants to hear, and that everybody can feel. I want to be the guy who tells the stories, and tells it like it is.”
Stories set to music are set to be served up by James Wesley Friday evening at 7:30 PM on the Amphitheater Stage.

New vendors at the Fair! Wild Bill’s Olde Fashioned Soda Pop Company

ild Bill’s Olde Fashioned Soda Pop Company is more of a revival than a new brand but it is brand new to the Santa Cruz County Fair. The company was inspired by Renato (Nic) Niccolai, a baker by trade, who spent his free time creating flavored carbonated beverages in his family’s basement. In Renato’s day there wasn’t the endless selection of plastic colas
and exotic energy drinks being sold in convenience stores. Beverages were crafted with care using only the best ingredients just like they are today at Wild Bill’s.
So if you haven’t bellied up to one of the seven taps at their stand, come on over partner! They’d love to show you what everyone is talking about around these refreshing watering holes!
