SOME ‘BERRY’ INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT STRAWBERRIES Strawberries by the numbers
If all the strawberries produced in California this year were laid berry to berry, they’d wrap around the world 15 times. That’s enough strawberries to provide every U.S. household with 12pint baskets.
Respondents to a recent national survey labeled strawberry lovers as “health conscious, fun loving, intelligent and happy.” Non-strawberry lovers, on the other, were described as “weird, boring, stuffy – picky, fussy eaters who avoid healthy foods.”
I’d Like To Thank The Academy
Hand-Picked And Packed
It would take 7,000 strawberries to create the red carpet that welcomes the stars to the Academy Awards each year.
California Dreaming
California provides approximately 83 percent of the nation’s strawberries.
Rated No. 1 With Children
Strawberries are a favorite with people of all ages, especially children. In a recent survey, kids seven to nine years old picked strawberries as their favorite fruit, followed by grapes, apples, oranges and bananas.

All strawberries are picked, sorted and packed by hand in the field. The trays of strawberries are then rushed to shipping facilities where they are cooled-down to about 34 degrees Fahrenheit. (A tray normally contains 12 one-pint baskets). Within 24 hours of harvest, the strawberries are loaded on refrigerated trucks for delivery to local supermarkets across the country. This unique distribution system ensures that this delicate fruit reaches consumers in fresh-from-the-field condition.
What’s The Best Method/Technique For Growing Strawberries?
Commercial strawberry growing is not the same as techniques a hobbyist would use. Our advice is to contact your local nursery for growing tips.
What’s The Best Way To Store Strawberries?
For strawberries to stay fresh, do not wash them right away. Store them in a large container with a dry paper towel at the bottom. Separate the berries by layering them with paper towels to maximize freshness. Just before using, wash strawberries with the caps attached under a gentle spray of cool water. For each best flavor, allow strawberries to reach room temperature before serving.
Can I Freeze Strawberries?
in a saucepan, mix equal amounts of sugar and water. Stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved and mixture is clear.
Cool the mixture completely. Measure one cup of steamed and sliced strawberries into a pint sized freezer bag. Pour one-half to two-thirds of a cup of the sugar water mixture into the bag…just enough to completely cover the strawberries. Seal and freeze the bag in a single layer. Because the moisture content of strawberries varies throughout the season, it’s recommended that home frozen strawberries be used in beverages and sauces, not in recipes where liquid variations could make a difference. (Commercially frozen strawberries are consistent in texture and density.)
How Many Seeds?
On the average, there are 200 tiny seeds in every strawberry.
Care and Handling
California strawberries are fully ripe at the time they are picked and do not continue to ripen after picking. The berries should have a bright red color, natural shine and fresh looking green caps.

Watsonville PAL
Strawberry: sundaes, agua fresca, cheescake, cheesecake a la mode The Watsonville Police Activities League is a youth crime prevention program that relies on educational, athletic and other activities to cement a bond among police officers, recreation leaders, youth and their parents. In 1998 Sergeant Montes was asked by Lt. Aluffi to establish a Police Activities League Program within the Watsonville community. Sergeant Montes pursued the challenge and focused on the sport of boxing. Boxing was of interest due to Sergeant Montes participating in boxing programs during his high school years and also participating in the Police Olympics. Once the planning
12
process began a building was acquired on Rodriguez St. The building was renovated by many community volunteers to bring in a boxing ring, heavy bags and other boxing equipment. In the summer of 1998 Watsonville PAL had its grand opening which included a professional kickboxing exhibition put on by Rick Nobel and friends. Watsonville PALs first participant came from the Watsonville Cadets canvassing the community with flyers about the program. Sergeant Montes was the first Executive Director of the Watsonville PAL Program. During the first year of WPAL the facility was open six days a week offering Boxing, Kickboxing and Aerobics classes. Shortly after the establishment of the program Watsonville PAL purchased a van and was able to recruit youth from various areas in the city including labor camps, apartment complexes and schools. Recognizing the need for PAL to expand its programming Sergeant Montes launched an indoor soccer program which consisted of sponsoring teams that played at the local indoor arena. PAL also formed the Watsonville PAL wrestling team that same year. The team was comprised of wrestlers from Watsonville High, Rolling Hills Junior High and E.A. Hall Junior High schools. To raise money for the new program Sergeant Montes organized its first fundraiser, the “Battle of the Badges” which was held in March of 1999. Watsonville PAL had fighters from WPD, CHP. SCSO, CDC, SC Probation and San Jose PD all these local law enforcement agencies battle it out in the ring to raise money for the Watsonville PAL program.
The Rockabilly Mafia Dolls are a vintage inspired social club originally founded on the West Coast in 2010 by Vanessa Garcia (a.k.a. Classi-Ness). The RMD is a sisterhood who believes in uplifting and empowering all people without bias. We continually encourage women to always “Keep it Classy!” To respect, value, and carry themselves with confidence and self-esteem. We are a sisterhood of strong and unconditionally supportive women. We accept women of all ages, background, and ethnicity, no matter what your current lifestyle may be. All we ask is that you come in with an open mind and a willingness to uphold our “Classy” ethics. The RMD strive to be positive role models in both our personal and public lives. We do this through community outreach, supporting local charities, and hosting like-minded events. Our service is to provide non-profit organizations with our help.

Since the departure of Sergeant Montes in 1999 there have been four Executive Directors that have all contributed to the success of the Watsonville Police Activities League Program. Watsonville PAL is still striving to create the bond between cops and kids through afterschool activities. Watsonville PAL would like to say thank you to the Watsonville community for the continuous support.
