Welcome from Miss Salinas Valley Fair
H
ello. My name is Dominique Mantel and on behalf of the Salinas Valley Fair I wish to extend an invitation for you to attend the 68th Annual Salinas Valley Fair, located in King City. The fair has been a great pastime event for our valley. It all began in the year 1941 and is still going strong until this day. This year the fun will continue as the fair will run from May 17 - May 20. The fair theme chosen for this year is “A little Fair with a Lotta Fun.” The fair has much to offer the entire family. Each and every year there are many attractions for all age groups. Adults may enjoy an evening in the Long Branch with live music and great company or perhaps take a stroll down “Photo Lane,” while enjoying many photographers’ work. You may even smell your way through the horticulture which have been grown by local gardeners. If it’s the little ones you are attempting to entertain, never fear, we have what you need right here. The kids can get face paintings, play with petting zoo animals, take pony rides or even have a blast in the kiddie carnival area. As a young child, I often enjoyed the giant slide, even though it is not so giant nowadays. The whole family may want to attend some of various arena events such as the good ole rodeo where you can watch brave local men ride crazy bucking bulls, clowns running around saving those men or even the little ones stick horse riding or mutton busting. During the day you might want to stop by and see the many equestrian enthusiasts compete side by side with their equine companions for the winning title. If it is those barnyard critters you wish to see, we have that here in the big red barns at the Salinas Valley Fair, too. In the Rava Barn are where the market steers, heifers, dairy cattle, goats, dairy goats, poultry and rabbits are. In the Topo Ranch Event Center barn are where the sheep and swine are located. The livestock show begins on Thursday and goes till Friday. Then, following on Saturday, is the Junior Livestock Auction. So come on down and support your local 4-H and FFA members as they work hard all year long for these events. Page 6
photo by king city photo center As I mentioned before, the Salinas Valley Fair has much to offer. The pavilion building will host many vendors of all types imaginable while the Orradre Building will be full of 4-H and FFA still projects. Throughout the week there are many live shows such as the talent show, where many locals come to showcase their talents. Some sing, some dance, some may even play musical instruments. Now, this all will happen at the Steinbeck Square located across from the pavilion. Once again, I wish to remind you the fair will run from May 17 through May 20. I hope to see you at our “Little Fair for A Lotta Fun!”

Although most shows are now held in the western states, Borba is working on possible events to be held in China and Malaysia, where motor sports shows are very popular in urban areas. Russia and the United Arab Emirates have also expressed interest in WGAS Motorsports events. Most of those shows feature a whole lot of action on a whole lot of dirt. “Ninety percent of our events are dirt events,” Borba said. Love and theft Friday night
ove and Theft is a bit different from the group that scored a Top 10 hit two years ago with “Runaway.” But the changes that have affected the group—most notably, signing with RCA Records and downsizing to a duo—have actually brought Love and Theft closer to what it originally set out to be: a band that writes, records and performs honest, soulful country music. While Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson are proud of their successful first effort, they admit it wasn’t the genuine sound they were hoping for—a tone they ultimately discovered when they recently returned to the studio under producer Josh Leo (Alabama, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band). Salinas Valley Fair-goers will see that new look Friday night at 8PM on the Steinbeck Stage. “We are really excited to have Love and Theft on stage at this year’s Fair, we know they are a great group and are looking forward to a great show,” said Sarah Cummings, CEO. Eric’s earthy voice is the perfect complement to Stephen’s high-altitude tenor. The guys happily share lead vocals, harmonize like a church choir, and bolster their band with their own guitar work. “Stephen and I have always been on the same page as far as the vision for Love and Theft and what we want it to be,” says Eric. “We feel like we have made the record we’ve always wanted to make.” “We love performing” says Stephen. “The way we are recording now is the way our influences made records: live with a band. It’s a lot more organic.” The result is a nod to the duo’s varied influences. “She’s Amazing” evokes the brilliant harmonies of the Eagles. The seductive “Amen” channels all the yearning of Roy Orbison. And the rollicking first single “Angel Eyes” brings to mind Elvis Presley’s “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise.” Page 8
While Johnny Cash and Orbison are both enormous influences, it might surprise fans to learn who the duo’s favorite artist is. “Hands-down, Elvis,” says Stephen. “My dad was really into him, so I got into him. I was all over Elvis growing up.” Coincidentally, both Stephen and Eric—who didn’t meet until they were in their early 20s—were raised as pastors’ kids, and their respective fathers fed them a steady diet of gospel, oldies and country. “Our parents didn’t want us listening to secular music that much. But they’d let us listen to Elvis, Roy, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band…,” says Eric. “It was cool to grow up that way, and that’s still my favorite kind of music.” It isn’t lost on the guys that they’re now recording for the very label that released some of their hero’s biggest hits. “We’re excited to be on RCA, the same label Elvis was on,” Stephen says with a smile. Perhaps it was some divine intervention that led the friends to this point in their career. Eric and Stephen, after all, will be the first to tell you that their shared spirituality is a cornerstone of Love and Theft. In fact, both used to lead worship at their churches. “That’s how we got our start playing music. Our faith is a huge part of our lives,” says Eric, pondering the fate of it all. “I feel like it was meant to be this way from the beginning. Our journey over the past four years was preparing us for where we’re at now.” Which is squarely at the doorstop of a prosperous career in country music. With a young, vibrant sound, a captivating live show, and a passionate fan base, Love and Theft are poised to become the genre’s next great duo. See the show Friday night at 8PM on the Steinbeck Stage at the Salinas Valley Fair.

Get ready to wrestle Saturday night
T
here’s no doubt that pro wrestling is gaining in popularity every year. This year the Salinas Valley Fair presents a topnotch wrestling match in the Steinbeck Square. Get ready to wrestle Saturday night at 8 PM when Vendetta Pro Wrestling makes its Salinas Valley Fair debut – and the show is free with Fair admission! In the ring will be former WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) superstars Gangel and Zach Gowen, along with The Almighty Sheik, “Night Claw” Brian Cage and the duos of Midnight Delight and Los Luchas. Don’t forget the women. NY Knockout and Donna Rose will also be in the ring on Saturday night. “This is going to be one high-energy, action packed show,” said Sarah Cummings, Salians Valley Fair CEO. “Wrestling outgrew our original venue, the Expo Building, so when we decided to bring it outdoors, we ramped up the show a bit. Don’t miss the action!” Vendetta Pro wrestling was originally founded under the name Pro Wrestling Unplugged, licensed as a West Coast extension of the Pro Wrestling Unplugged promotion based in Philadelphia. However, the license was quickly pulled, and shortly thereafter, PWU shut down operations. The West Coast promotion then began using the name Vendetta Pro Wrestling, and focused more on creating their own identity, using a mix of former World Wrestling Entertainment talents with wrestlers from the Independent Circuit on the West Coast. Vendetta Pro’s first event was held on July 11, 2009 in Santa Maria, with an 11-match card including an impromptu Battle Royal for the Vendetta Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship, which was won by “Sexy” Sean Casey. Vendetta Pro often features “Tri-Force” matches, which are standard three-way elimination matches in which the first fall eliminates one wrestler, reducing the match to a standard one-fall match. Vendetta Pro sanctions a Championship title for these kind of matches, known as the Vendetta Pro Wrestling Tri-Force
May 17-20, 2012
Championship. The first Tri-Force Champion was Chimaera, who won the title on May 23, 2010 in Lompoc, California, defeating “Nightclaw” Brian Cage and “Big Nasty” Jason Watts in a tournament final. Vendetta Pro has often featured cast members from the truTV hit television show “Operation Repo,” Matt Burch and Froy Tercero, who serve as executive “enforcers,” as well as lieutenant Commissioners themselves. Vendetta Pro was one of the few Wrestling companies in California to introduce Entrance Videos for their live show events. Vendetta Pro events are produced by Christopher “TAK” Clark.

In the expo – just for the kids “A real hit!” That’s what Sarah Cummings, Salinas Valley Fair CEO, calls the Kidzone in the Entertainment Expo Building. “From the minute the doors opened until they closed, there were lots of youngsters and their parents in the Expo Building enjoying that magical combination of lots of fun, a little education and a place for mom and dad to take a rest. This year should be just as much fun with the Ag Adventure Land and A World of Music exhibits.”
C
ombine a bunch of musical instruments and a bunch of kids and you have a number one hit. For the younger set in the Expo building, the Fair presents A World of Music. This totally hands-on museum of music features several hundred instruments from around the world, drum circles throughout the day (accommodating up to 70 participants at a time), an ongoing rhythm workshop for rhythmically-challenged participants, a blue man group station, a kids band area and an electronic instrument section, featuring the amazing Beamz Laser Player in which aspiring maestros can conduct an entire orchestra with lasers. By exploring the instruments in the exhibit, guests will get a glimpse into other cultures and history in an educational, yet entertaining fun environment.
AgVenture Land
Page 12
The exhibit offers a place to learn: • How instruments are classified • Where various instruments come from • What various instruments sound like • Who made the instruments and why • Explore the development of the North American stringed instruments in the collection that ranges from the 1800s to modern day • How to experience “in-the-moment” music through percussion/drum circles • How to create cooperation instead of competition while playing together • The importance of listening as much as playing in a circle. A world of music seeks to inspire and encourage children AND adults to explore music more thoroughly on their own. Head to the Expo for the fabulous World of Music. Don’t miss it. Open all day every day of the fair. Ag is the cornerstone of the economy of the Salinas Valley and AgVenture Land is a hands-on activity for the younger set that provides lots of ag-oriented and FUN activities. Let your little ones enjoy a farming experience each and every day of the fair in the Entertainment Expo, which this year is a fabulous place to spend some time. AgVenture Land teaches kids how to have fun in an old-fashioned way; far from televisions and videogames! This agricultural and educational area includes cow milking, corn and bean play boxes, pony saddling a craft station, an old-fashioned general store, pedal tractors and a “pooper scooper” station. Let the fun begin.

Birds of a Feather: Funny together!
A
ll we can say is – these birds are amazing!!! Nancy Riegler brings her flock of feathered stars to the fair this year in the family area. Stars of the Bird Show include talking/singing sessional Amazon parrots, Lola and Billy. Ceasar, of the Dreamworks motion picture Paulie, adds pint-sized star power while Koalabi, the Cockatoo, steals the show with hilarious hijinks. Audience members get up close and personal with rarely seen exotic birds like Maya the toucan and Rico, the South American Jay. Nancy’s birds show off their amazing talent, skill and intelligence while educating audiences about bird life and behavior as well as the importance of responsible bird ownership. Loosely scripted, Nancy prefers to allow the birds room to improvise. “The funniest parts of the show have been written by the birds themselves,” jokes Nancy. “I give them a lot of latitude so they come up with the craziest things… we’re all laughing and having a ball!” An animal trainer for over two decades, Nancy, along May 17-20, 2012
with her birds and other animal friends, have been on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Paulie: the Movie, Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, California Gold with Huell Howser and Animal Planet’s Pet Star. While on the road traveling, the birds and Nancy live in their own custom home-away-fromhome, a 22-foot travel trailer complete with everything the flock needs from climate control to refrigeration to accommodate their special diets. Nancy’s cat, Pearly often accompanies the troop and sometimes even makes an impromptu appearance during the show! When not traveling together, Nancy and her birds make their home with Nancy’s husband, Gil, at the Oasis Camel Dairy (yes, the Rieglers really do milk camels!) The 34-acre ranch located in rural San Diego County affords the birds lots of room, exercise and fresh air.

Long Branch: Three nights of music, music, music Karaoke Rockstarz – Thursday Karaoke Rockstarz provides a chance for wanna-be rock stars to sing their hearts out to their favorite songs in front of a live band. Ray Rodarte and the members of Karaoke Rockstarz have truly found their niche. Head over to the Long Branch at 8PM Thursday and find out what it is all about. Live band karaoke is just what the name describes. It combines the best of karaoke with the energy of a cover band. Rodarte first pitched it to entertainment director Rob Stone at the El Dorado in Reno with the hopes of putting the show on at Brew Brothers. While the idea was received with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, the problem was that Rodarte had never done it before. “I had heard about it and thought it sounded great,” he says. “It’s hard for local bands to find the right niche, so this seemed like a good solution. … We’ve all sung along at the top of our voice to a song in the car and thought about what it would be like to be
on stage. Who hasn’t? So that’s what we do. We offer people their chance at 15 minutes of fame.”
The Money Band – Friday The Money Band is a high-energy band and they will be on stage at the Long Branch Saloon Friday at 8PM. Be there!!! For more than 15 years, they have earned their reputation as ambassadors of top 40 hits, performing for thousands of fans all over the world. Fronted by charismatic lead vocalist and harmonica player Zoe Alexander, The Money Band performs with a remarkable intensity and fire that garners new fans and critical acclaim. The Money Band is accompanied with renowned and distinguished musicians, playing every style from country to funk, disco to classic
rock, reggae, modern and pop, with songs from the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson, Kid Rock and Bon Jovi. “It’s humbling to know that people associate our songs with some of the most meaningful moments in their lives,” says Zoe Alexander. “We now have a multigenerational fan base and everyone is sure to hear their favorites.” The Money Band will get things rockin’ Friday night.
Shan Johnson Band – Saturday Always popular and great musicians, these guys are good! Just ask anyone from the area who likes good solid rock. The well known Shan Johnson Band will be rockin’ out Saturday night at the Long Branch at 8PM. Band members include Jeff Pereira, lead guitar; Shan Johnson, drums; Joe Duckworth, bass; and Jun Tatsuoka, lead guitar. Specializing in tunes from the classic rock genre, the Shan Johnson Band has performed as a group for the last 20 years. Three of the four band members have been practicing since the eighth grade. The newest addition is Tatsuoka, who toured with the Beach Boys as a keyboard technician. Plan to rock on with the Shan Johnson Band at this year’s Salinas Valley Fair!

texaco country Showdown Friday at 3 p.m.
C
ountry music at the grassroots level! The Texaco Country Showdown is a giant nationwide talent contest hosted by local radio stations all over America. There are usually six to 10 qualified acts competing to be the winner for KRKC AM Country and FM 104.9 segment of the contest. This year’s competition will be Friday on the Steinbeck Stage. The talent starts at 3PM and is a popular contest in our Fair’s entertainment lineup. Annually, more than 50,000 artists compete in the Texaco-sponsored local competitions with 450 radio stations throughout the U.S. and more than $300,000 in cash prizes are awarded throughout 550+ live competitions. The winner at the Salinas Valley Fair will advance to a statewide competition in August and then hopefully to the next regional competition level. All participants are consistently judged on five core criteria: marketability in country music, vocal/instrumental ability, originality of performance, stage presence/charisma and talent. Optional bonus points can be awarded to acts with original music in the songwriting category. The competition boasts a “who’s who” in the country music industry with past local, state and regional winners including Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Billy Ray Cyrus, Sara Evans, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. The Texaco Country Showdown is free, included with the price of Fair admission.

FABLES OF THE WEST guess I should give some credit to the horses we ride (‘faux’ Muppet-like miniatures), though they seem to sometimes steal our thunder.” Ken points out that every show is different and fresh, because, after all, the majority of it is improv. “We mostly make it up on the spot as we go along.”
TRACKLESS TRAIN
Get ready to ride with the biggest little cowboys on the Old West trail. If you’re coming to the fair in 2012, you’re sure to get a ‘kick’ from the Fables Of The West gang and their trusty steeds, as they head out on the 2012 ‘Trail Of Tales’ Tour. The cowboy comedy team (often referred to as “the little cowboys on the little horses”) has, in just 11 years’ time, performed at over 600 fairs and events (in their entirety) from Alaska to Florida to Texas to their home state of California. And just what is it these ‘Fables’ cowboys do? “Its high energy and interactive, and we try to involve fair guests by literally making them the main focus of the show,” says Ken McMeans, owner and founder of the Fables team. The group is actually labeled as a strolling grounds act- never really having a specific show time nor needing (or wanting) to be on a stage (“too far away from the crowd,” says Ken). “I May 17-20, 2012

Bull riding bucks Saturday night in the arena
I
t’s a tradition at the Salinas Valley Fair! The popular Saturday night Bull Riding will be part of the California Smack Down Bull Riding $10,000 Series and will start at 7p.m.in the Stampede Grounds. Produced by Flying High Rodeo Company and sponsored by L. A. Hearne Co, this year’s events will include an open bull riding with a purse of $2,000. Winners of the event will receive a silver buckle along with their cash prize. One of the most popular and entertaining events of all, the Mutton Bustin’ will also be back for children 6 and younger who weigh under 60 pounds. There will also be two stick horse races for the youngsters age 3 and younger and one for 4 to 5 year olds. Children interested must fill out an entry form and bring their own stick horse to ride. Buckles will also be awarded to the small cowboys or cowgirls that win these events. Be sure and sign up ahead of time, space is limited. Hang on to your hats for the Merchant Ribbon Roping. One person will rope the steer and the “merchant” will pull the ribbon off of the steer’s tail. Funny doesn’t describe it – hilarious is more like it. Of course, ropers will be provided if you don’t have anyone in your company that ropes. Each member of the winning team will be awarded a beautiful silver buckle. Teams are limited to 15 so be sure and get your team signed up. At a bull riding, the rider’s best friend is the rodeo clown and barrelman. This year man in the barrel, so to speak, is Mike Hayhurst from Barstow, California. Mike is a former city police sergeant and now works as a charter school superintendent. Mike began his rodeo career in 1977 at a junior rodeo in Livermore. He was a clown and bullfighter for many high school and junior
Page 26
rodeos before moving up into the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association. Mike worked as a clown and bullfighter for the European Rodeo Cowboys Association while stationed in Germany in the US Army, and continued with the CCPRA after he served his 4-year enlistment. He joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2002. Mike has worked PRCA rodeos literally from coast to coast. He is honored to have been selected as a clown for the prestigious Mule Days Celebration in Bishop, California four times now. In 2006 he was selected to work the PRCA California Circuit Finals Rodeo. So riders, relax, this guy knows what he is doing. This year the Bull Riding will be announced by Eddie Kutz of Arroyo Grande. For more information contact Earl Escobar at 831-236-1508 or pickup your entry forms at the Fair office or from the Salinas Valley Fair website at www.salinasvalleyfair.com. Other arena events The Bull Challenge isn’t the only action in the arena during the fair. Barrel racing will be going on in the Stampede Grounds on Thursday Night with “time onlys” at 5 p.m. and races at 7:30. The top 15 racers will be invited back to compete for the championship in the Saturday night performance as well. It all starts Wednesday with the 4-H and FFA horse show and gymkhana. Thursday is the open and junior gymkhana during the day and Barrel Race in the evening. Friday is the Ranch Doctoring starting at 7 p.m. and Saturday is Team Roping starting with signups at 9 a.m. and with the roping at beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday will be the Truck Pull and Monster Truck Ride.

amateur talent contest thursday night
T
here are many talent shows on television these days, but long before America’s Got Talent and American Idol, the Salinas Valley Fair hosted its own talent show and the tradition continues with the Salinas Valley Fair Amateur Talent Show Thursday night of the Fair at 7PM on the Steinbeck Stage. Each year the annual Amateur Talent Show discovers and presents the top amateurs in Monterey County with cash prizes. There will be $1,200 awarded to the Salinas Valley Fair Amateur Talent Contest winners. The competition is divided in two
divisions: vocal and dance. The prize money will be awarded: $300 for first, $200 for second and $50 each for third and fourth place in each division. Contestants in the finals will be judged on Talent (60%), Overall Performance, (25 %), and Stage Presence (15 %). The Salinas Valley Fair Amateur Talent Contest is wildly popular as it showcases some very talented local acts. Come by the Steinbeck Stage and see for yourself.
Just $5 till 5 thursday at the Fair “Only five till five!”” The popular promotion is back for this year’s Salinas Valley Fair -- $5 admission till 5 p.m. opening day, Thursday Adult admission, usually $8 is only $5 – a savings of nearly 38%. upcoming projects for the Heritage Foundation
W
ith the completion of $5 million in fundraising for the Rava Ranch Arena and the Topo Ranch Events Center, the Heritage Foundation announced that its next fundraising project would be a new Junior Livestock Office, Conference Room and Livestock Bathrooms. “These projects are a logical next step to help improve facilities at the Salinas Valley Fair,” said Tim Maxwell, Heritage Foundation president. “With more bathroom facilities, we will be able to accommodate more events, and help to bring in more interim revenue for the fairgrounds. The new bathrooms will also make the lives of all of our junior livestock exhibitors, and their parents, a little easier.” The new bathroom complex will be located where the existing bathrooms and livestock offices are currently located. The bathroom project is scheduled to begin construction following this year’s Salinas Valley Fair, with a completion date prior to the 2013 Fair. All monies raised since the completion of the barns will be used to help aid in the construction of the bathrooms. Donations for the Bathroom project can be made to Page 28
the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation by contacting Capital Campaign Chairman, Rich Casey at caseyr@ caseyprinting.com. The mission of the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation is to “”to preserve and enrich the heritage of the Salinas Valley Fair and showcase agricultural industries to the community. Heritage Foundation scholarship recipient nicole Hardoy of king city FFa
T
he Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation named Nicole Hardoy of Lockwood as its 2012 Livestock Scholarship winner. Hardoy, a senior at King City High School, was chosen from a field of extremely qualified applicants through an application and interview process “Our whole committee was very impressed by Nicole’s commitment to her FFA Chapter, 4-H and the Salinas Valley Fair,” said Jessica Harris, Heritage Foundation Livestock Scholarship Committee Chair. “Nicole came highly recommended and we are sure she will represent the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation to the best of her ability.” Nicole will receive a $1,500 scholarship, a $500 cash prize and will have all the expenses for her animal, including purchase and feed paid for by the Heritage Foundation. Nicole will be raising a lamb for the 2012 Heritage Animal, which will then be sold to benefit the Heritage Foundation during the Salinas Valley Fair Junior Livestock Auction Saturday as the last animal through the ring. Many of Nicole’s recommendation commented on her personal growth through participation in programs such as FFA and 4-H, and the committee saw her growth as well. Her commitment to raising animals and her drive to succeed were factors that made her standout among the candidates. Nicole currently serves as the president of King City FFA. She was recently awarded with an FFA Proficiency Award in Environmental Science & Natural Resources Management. She has also received her FFA State degree and is involved in numerous committees and clubs at school as well as in the community. She will be attending Chico State in the fall to study Agriculture. If you would like to become a buyer for the Heritage Animal or would like to contribute to the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation, please contact the Salinas Valley Fair office at 831-385-3243 or visit www.svfheritage.org.

Junior Livestock auction Brings the bids for exhibitors
the Junior Livestock auction in the rava arena attracts hundreds of buyers and supporters all day Saturday. More than 600 4-H and FFa members bring their animals through the ring.
M
ore than a million. That’s how much the 2011 Junior Livestock Auction buyers paid for the more than 700 animals that went through the ring. “It’s always amazing how much support our 4-H, FFA and independent exhibitors earn,” said Nate Holaday, longtime fair director and organizer of the Junior Livestock Auction. Last year was phenomenal, breaking all records. I think many of the other fairs are envious of the backing we have, year after year, in good times and not-so-good. I can’t thank our buyers enough!” That tradition will continue Saturday morning at 8AM sharp in the Rava Arena when the first hog goes through the ring. Last year’s auction total just over $1.25 million. There are about 800 or so animals that will go through the ring and if everything runs like clockwork, the auction should be finished around 8 o’clock. A few seconds in the ring is the culmination of months of hard work for these young livestock exhibitors, who have raised market hogs, sheep, beef, rabbits or poultry. Thanks to the buyers, the animals bring a good return to the exhibitors, who have already spent time in the show ring to have their animals examined by the judges. The day starts out with market hogs, followed by bred heifers, beef, goats, poultry, rabbits and lambs. The Junior Livestock Auction, which is broadcast live by KRKC, brings together the efforts of dozens of volunteers and the generosity of many businesses. Staff members from Rabobank are not only ringside, but also work diligently behind the scenes to make sure the checks are available within hours. 101 Livestock auctioneers donate their time. This year King City auctioneer Mackenzie Bailey will again be spending some time behind the microphone. American AgCredit sponsors the buyers’ lunch. The breakfast is sponsored by the California Women for Agriculture.
Page 30
Industrial Pump Shop, Mike and Mary Orradre and Rosa’s Catering sponsor the buyers’ reception. In the barn area, volunteers work closely with project leaders and exhibitors to make sure the animals are brought into the ring in a timely manner, no mean feat. The ringmen watch closely to catch every bid, begging, and cajoling when necessary, to get the best price for each animal. The auctioneers, in their unique measured cadence, keep the auction moving and make sure the seller and buyer each get their due. “Our volunteers really make the difference,” said Holaday. “With hundreds of animals and exhibitors, it still runs smoothly.” Holaday reminded exhibitors that a great way for them honor their buyers is to support the Heritage Foundation and purchase the very popular buyers cards. “The Heritage Foundation is responsible for our fabulous barns,” he said. “They have worked for years to pay for this $5 million project and with the support of hundreds of donors we did it. Now they are focused on raising money to construct new restrooms in the livestock area, something we desperately need.” The Salinas Valley Fair and the Junior Livestock Auction Committee work hard to make the process easy for the buyer. If the buyer wishes to resell the animal, he is billed the difference between the price paid and the market price. If the buyer wishes to have the animal slaughtered, a custom marketing service will deliver the carcass to the butcher of the buyer’s choice. The third alternative is live pick-up. The animal will be held at the fairgrounds for the buyer. Come down to the Junior Livestock Auction Saturday, kick a little sawdust and if you want to support the exhibitors, buy an animal.
