The 2013 Fair is packed with entertainment, education, livestock and celebrates our communities’ local talent, abundant agriculture, youth and adult exhibitions and fun, fun, fun! The Fair has all of the traditional fair-time favorites we have come to love, with an extra fun feel this year. While you still get to enjoy the Fair favorites -- corndogs, cotton candy carnival rides and livestock exhibits, get ready for some action as well!! Everybody loves the action of the Junior Livestock Auction on Saturday in the Rava Arena! This year, after the Junior Livestock Auction, head over to the Steinbeck Square for raw force as Vendetta Pro Wrestling makes its second appearance in King City as part of the Salinas Valley Fair. New this year we present the daredevil excitement of Extreme Motocross with two shows on Saturday in the Stampede Arena, followed by the heart pounding action of WGAS Motorsports Hot Rod 4X4 Truck Pull in the Stampede Arena on Sunday. For you thrill seekers, become part of the show by entering your truck in the pull and see if you are tough enough to make it to the end. While you are here, be sure to check out the all-new Passport Adventure in the Expo Building and Gypsy Time Travelers in the Family Area. Stop by the ever popular Happy Day Pony Rides for a leisurely ride, check out Jules Physical Comedy strolling through the grounds, Lanky the Clown and the cute cowboys of Fables Of The West. Catch a ride on Rawhide Ranch Express Trackless Train, and see the furry friends in the Great American Petting Zoo. Then mosey through the beautiful floral exhibits in Garden Lane, the photo displays in Photo Lane and a whole

farmyard full of fun in the Rava Arena and the Topo Ranch Event Center. Play a game or two in the carnival and win a giant stuffed animal, or experience the thrills of the Butler Amusement’s carnival rides if you dare! Stay and play all day – and don’t miss the exciting nightlife at the Fair with The Grand Wine Tasting in the Expo followed by Cody Beebe and the Crooks in the Longbranch Saloon on Thursday. Terra Bella will be performing in the Longbranch Saloon and Russell Dickerson live in concert on Friday night, followed by the Wild Turkeys on Saturday in the Longbranch and Super Fiesta entertainment featuring Ballet Folklorico Flores De Mi Pais, Trio San Juan, Retonos de Tijuana and Los Dinamicos Del Norte on Sunday. his year’s 69th annual Salinas Valley Fair promises to be a ton of fun in King City. Our theme celebrates our Country roots and the excitement of the carnival, Country Nights and Carnival Lights. The 2013 Fair will run from May 16-19 and promises fun activities for fairgoers of all ages! The Fair will again offer an extended entertainment lineup with great bands to perform for you, Great American Petting Zoo, Junior Livestock Exhibits, Junior Livestock Auction, a talent competition, entertainment in the Longbranch Saloon and new this year – Passport Adventure in the Expo, and Gypsy Time Travelers in the Family Area. What would a Fair be without kids and carnival rides? This year’s Fair begins Thursday, May 16th with Kids Day. To make sure everyone can enjoy the fun, EVERYONE will be admitted to the Fair for $5 until 5 p.m. Thursday, WOW! Thursday will begin with our 4-H and FFA Market Livestock classes. The amazing rides and thrills of the carnival will start Thursday and continue every day of the Fair. Discount all day carnival ride wristbands and pre-sale Fair admission tickets are available at the Fair Office until May 15th. Friday is Seniors’ Day, all seniors 60 and better are admitted free all day. The second day of the Fair continues on with FFA and 4-H Livestock classes, Champion Timed Event Rodeo in the arena and finishes off with country music’s up-and-coming performer, Russell Dickerson on the Steinbeck Stage. elcome. Country Nights and Carnival Lights, that’s what’s happening this year at the 69th annual Salinas Valley Fair. I want to personally invite you to King City from May 16 through the 19th where there will be a little something for everyone. If you’re an animal lover like me, come to the Topo Ranch Event Center and see your local youth competing with their yearly projects in the show ring. Walk through the aisles and visit hundreds of swine and sheep. Feel free to stop by and visit my perfect little pig “Crispy” or come to the Rava Equestrian Arena and get an up close view of all kinds of farm animals. But if that’s not close enough for you, stop by the petting zoo located next to the entrance of the kiddie carnival. Here you won’t hear the usual “don’t feed the animals.” In fact, you can feed them from the palm of your hand. There will be llamas, miniature donkeys, baby animals, and many more that roam free throughout the whole tent. The children will have a blast in the kiddie carnival where they can speed down the tall slide and ride the exciting miniature roller coaster. On your way out the most important decision you will have to make, is what concession concoction you will try? Every year you will find me and my family having one of our favorites, corn dogs. But you don’t have to stop there; you can find ice cream, Slurpee’s, and deep fried anything you can think of! Once you have your snack in hand take a stroll through the pavilion and look at what this year’s vendors have to offer. There will be clothes, crafts and of course every girl’s best friend “Bling.” Next, make sure to visit the Orradre building where they display unique and original arts and crafts from many people across the county. The building is hosted by local 4H-ers who would love to show you around. Then fasten your seat belts because if it’s thrills you’re looking for, we’ve got them. The carnival will not disappoint you with the Zipper, Ferris wheel, and the Graviton. Test your skills with the many games and possibly come home with a new stuffed fury friend. Page 6

The stampede arena will host many different action-packed events throughout the week such as my favorites, team roping, truck pulls, and the Champion Time Event Rodeo. On the Steinbeck stage there will be the talent contest, and country artist Russell Dickerson. Bring your family and enjoy all these things the fair has to offer. There are great memories to be made. I know that my family and I have made memories that we will never forget. There is no better place to be on a country night under carnival lights than the Salinas Valley Fair.

Country Sensation Russell Dickerson
F
rom the modest pews of a West Tennessee church to the gleaming stages of Music City, 25-year-old Russell Dickerson was destined to make his way to the spotlight. And he will be in the spotlight at the Salinas Valley Fair Friday night on the Steinbeck Stage, sponsored by KRKC radio. The show begins at 8. With a musical family background and the natural ability to entertain, Dickerson discovered his love for country music when his family moved to Nashville at the age of ten. “I got my first real hand-made acoustic guitar when I was sixteen,” Dickerson says, “I was so excited, and even though I couldn’t play it yet, I started a band.” Soon after, Dickerson began songwriting and cultivating a live show experience based on influences like Garth Brooks and Keith Urban. “When I write songs,” he says, “I picture looking out at the
audience and not just seeing, but feeling their response. Garth’s shows are like a drama; overflowing with so many emotions. I try to evoke those same kinds of emotions in my songs and then take them full-circle on stage.” With a commanding presence both off and on the stage, the 6’4” Dickerson blends his rich vocal quality with a style all his own. “You’ve gotta’ respect the traditional music while doing your own thing at the same time,” he says. “That’s what’s great about country music – you can do that.” Continually writing, recording, and performing energetic shows, Dickerson has recently signed a publishing deal with one of Nashville’s most successful independent publishers, Combustion Music, along with signing a management deal with Dennis Entertainment, and booking with CAA.

Vendetta Pro Wrestling
hey’re back! Vendetta Pro Wrestling returns to the Salinas Valley Fair with pulse-pounding, high-flying, jaw-jacking, back-breaking pro wrestling Lucha Libre action. The wildly popular event will be in Steinbeck Square, 8 p.m. Saturday night, and it’s free with admission. This year will feature Former WWE superstars Matt Hardy (1 half of the tag team the Hardy Boyz), Chris Masters, and Vendetta Vixens match featuring Reby Sky. Vendetta Pro Wrestling’s form of pro wrestling and entertainment from the opening bell to the main event will leave fans hungry for more Vendetta Pro action. “Fair-goers loved this high-energy, action-packed show last year and we are delighted to be able to bring them back,” said Sarah Cummings, SVF CEO. “Having it on the main stage has expanded the venue and we have ramped up a notch or two. Don’t miss it!” Vendetta Pro wrestling was originally founded under the name Pro Wrestling Unplugged, licensed as a West Coast extension of the Pro Wrestling Unplugged promotion based in Philadelphia. However, the license was quickly pulled, and shortly thereafter, PWU shut down operations. The now-unnamed West Coast promotion then began using the name Vendetta Pro Wrestling, and focused more on creating their own identity, using a mix of former World

Wrestling Entertainment talents with wrestlers from the Independent Circuit on the West Coast. Vendetta Pro’s first event was held on July 11, 2009 in Santa Maria, with an 11-match card including an impromptu Battle Royal for the Vendetta Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship, which was won by “Sexy” Sean Casey. Vendetta Pro often features “Tri-Force” matches, which are standard three-way elimination matches in which the first fall eliminates one wrestler, reducing the match to a standard one-fall match. Vendetta Pro sanctions a Championship title for these kinds of matches, known as the Vendetta Pro Wrestling Tri-Force Championship. The first Tri-Force Champion was Chimaera, who won the title on May 23, 2010 in Lompoc, California, defeating “Nightclaw” Brian Cage and “Big Nasty” Jason Watts in a tournament final. Vendetta Pro has often featured cast members from the truTV hit television show “Operation Repo,” Matt Burch and Froy Tercero, who serve as executive “enforcers,” as well as lieutenant commissioners themselves. Vendetta Pro was one of the few Wrestling companies in California to introduce Entrance Videos for their live show events. Vendetta Pro events are produced by Christopher “TAK” Clark.

Hot Rod 4x4 Truck Pull

ower packed and tons of fun! While we would never say we’re saving the best for last because all four days of the Salinas Valley Fair are jam packed, BUT Sunday features the return of Hot Rod Trucks, with the arena exploding with thundering engines and spewing dirt for the entire afternoon. The only ones who will have more fun than the drivers is the crowd. And it’s FREE with the price of admission From local street stock 4X4 trucks to the wild hot rod 4X4s. This event offers something for everyone – Ford, Dodge, Chevy – they will all be competing in a contest of raw horse power while pulling a weight transfer sled down the track. The goal is to see who will get the furthest before the weighted sled stops them. Competition is open to the public – whether you have never pulled in your life or if you are a seasoned pro – this is the place to be for fun, excitement and the thrills and spills of Hot Rod Truck Pulling. WGAS Motorsports will be putting on the show and they have a top-notch reputation in the industry. “This event

was so much fun last year that we just had to bring it back,” said Sarah Cummings, SVF CEO. John Borba, with decades of experience, has produced events across the United States and Canada, as well as overseas, in Japan’s Tokyo Dome. Although most shows are now held in the western states, Borba is working on possible events to be held in China and Malaysia, where motor sports shows are very popular in urban areas. Russia and the United Arab Emirates have also expressed interest in WGAS Motorsports events. Most of those shows feature a whole lot of action on a whole lot of dirt. “Ninety percent of our events are dirt events,” Borba said. Smith Alley Rocks
H
ead for the Steinbeck Stage Thursday at 5 p.m. to hear the up-and-coming Alternative rock band from Hollister – Smith Alley. The group won the local Battle of the Bands at San Benito High School in March 2012. Soon after, they won the Songwriter’s Battle at San Benito High and the Santa Cruz Teen Battle of the Bands. The Santa Cruz Public television station invited the band to perform for a public broadcast in September 2012. In October, the band produced a music video, titled “Zombies”, to coincide with Halloween. In January 2013, Smith Alley participated in the Battle of the Bands finals contest held at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco sponsored by Gorilla Productions. The band members ages range from 16 to 20 yearsold consisting of Jesaiah Baer (Lead Vocalist), Alex Sanchez (Lead Guitar), Omar Huweih (Rhythm Guitar), Corey Cota (Bass), Ryan Loomis (Drums), and David Carrig (Rap Vocals). Jesaiah was a recent contestant on American Idol in 2013 and was famously interrupted by a fire alarm while auditioning in front of the judges on The Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. Smith Alley’s music can be categorized as rock alternative with a slight jazz influence. Their strength in songwriting and musical talent will not disappoint you. Amateur Talent Contest Thursday night
T
here are scads of talent shows on television these days, but long before America Has Talent and American Idol, the Salinas Valley Fair hosted its own talent show and the run continues with the Salinas Valley Fair Amateur Talent Show Thursday night of the Fair at 7 on the Steinbeck Stage. This is a show that packs in the crowd and for very good reasons! The purpose of the annual Amateur Talent show is to discover and present the top amateurs in Monterey County with cash prizes. There will be $1,200 awarded to the winners with competition in two divisions, vocal and dance, $300 for first, $200 for second and $50 each for third and fourth place in each division. t may be the most unique combination of talent and subject matter on the fair tour. Gypsy Time Travelers blend vaudevillian entertainment and blacksmithing – yep, blacksmithing into a blend of storytelling and education. Michel Olson at age 25 just might be the youngest master blacksmith in America and makes four to 25 items on his anvil each show which he gives away. But it’s not just blacksmithing. While he uses brute strength to shape the iron his wife Christy Horne wraps mystical tales of yesteryear to the anvil accompaniment. The Long Branch is the spot to get a tall, cool one and Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to listen to music, really good LIVE music.
Cody Beebe and the Crooks – Thursday, 8 p.m. Bound by their collective roots in Central Washington and Washington State University, Cody Beebe & The Crooks began performing together in February of 2009 in Seattle. The band spent the following subsequent three years exploring music together and discovering what CBC was to become. The band calls it Roots Rock; some radio gurus have dubbed it Progressive Americana, and others have said “Steve Earle meets Pink Floyd.” Musically, strong elements of gritty blues, classic rock, country, and funk are obvious. More subtle are the splashes of jazz, R&B, and metal. Sometimes soaring above, sometimes smoothly crooning, sometimes twanging, and always deeply emotionally invested, their melodies and lyrics soulfully unite the sound. If their genre can’t be easily named, that says nothing of its approachability and timelessness. Since the release of their debut album, “Friends of the Old Mill,” Cody Beebe & The Crooks have been touring vigorously and have played a number of festivals and fairs from Washington to New York. They will be at the Salinas Valley Fair Thursday at 8 in the Long Branch. Come by and listen.
Wild Turkeys – Saturday, 8 p.m.
On a cool October afternoon in 2006, Matt and Greg jammed for the very first time. Greg was playing a set of drums he had just bought on craigslist and Matt was playing a small $50 travel guitar his mom had gotten him for camping trips. They sounded horrible, but for some reason it felt right. Half way through the incoherent mess, they couldn’t help but notice a flock of wild turkeys congregating outside the window of Gregs Corral de Tierra house. The curious birds were attracted to the peculiar sound and they stayed until the last song had been played. Matt made the mistake of turning to Greg and saying, “If we ever start a band we should name ourselves Wild Turkeys after our first loyal fans.” They both agreed it was a terrible idea. Not long after their first meeting, things began to evolve and take shape, and the name stuck. Jack, Rob and James joined in

Terra Bella – Friday, 9 p.m. Terra Bella is “the” country act to watch coming out of California. Their songs tell the story of falling in love, good times, heartbreak and the country way of life. The husband and wife duo have shared the stage with some of the biggest acts in the industry such as Blake Shelton, Lee Brice, Trace Adkins, Gary Allan and Montgomery Gentry. YOSAL Youth Orchestra on stage noon Friday

t’s a group of youth people who play amazing music, but
it is so much more. Come to the Steinbeck Stage Friday at noon and hear the YOSAL Youth Orchestra. Instructor Camilo Ortiz summarized the program, “The music program at YOSAL is an opportunity for children to believe in themselves and find their potential. YOSAL represents for them a break from the outside world; from the pressure of school; from family problems; and from social issues that are present in the community. When they enter the door at a YOSAL facility, they are part of a team, an orchestra and every single one of them is an important element of it. Even the most behavioral challenging students change with time, once they realize their abilities, talent, and the joy of playing music. This is reflected back into the community, with proud parents, relatives and outsiders that understand and participate into this process. Music through the YOSAL orchestral program is bringing social transformation to the very front of our eyes.” The program in the Salinas program reaches out to scores of children. In South County there are also dozens of children who come every day after school to learn music, do their homework and be in a safe nurturing environment.
Every child is welcome and encouraged. Eventually there will be a system of quality youth orchestras making music throughout the Central Coast. The hard work these children put in and the love they develop for music will open many doors for their future. “Music has to be recognized...as an agent of social development in the highest sense because it transmits the highest values--solidarity, harmony, mutual compassion...it has the ability to unite an entire community, “ said Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, founder, El Sistema in Venezuela. Heritage Foundation ramrods campaign for new entry office and bathrooms By JESSICA HARRIS Now approaching its 13th year of operations, the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation, more than 225 members strong, continues to stay true to its mission statement, “to preserve and enrich the heritage of the Salinas Valley Fair and showcase agricultural industries to the community.” Following the mission statement, the Heritage Foundation embarked on a new project, rising to meet the ever evolving needs of the Salinas Valley Fair and Fairgrounds, helping to break ground on the new Shelly Watts Entry office and bathrooms/showers. “The bathrooms are a welcome addition to the Fairgrounds,” said Alex Romans, Heritage Foundation President. “They will be an essential part of the exhibitor experience during the annual Fair, but they will also allow for more interim events and helping to fund year-round operations at the Fairgrounds.” To help support the bathroom project construction, the Heritage Foundation once again turned to Rich Casey to lead the Capital Campaign Committee. Although the bathrooms will be complete prior to Fair, the capital campaign committee is actively seeking donations to help raise the remaining funds needed. If you would like to donate to the Capital Campaign committee, please contact Rich Casey at caseyr@ caseyprinting.com. The Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation is lucky to have many of their members support their numerous events throughout the year as well as support the Heritage Hospitality Run during the annual Fair. Each year, the Foundation holds a packet pick up party for members to come and enjoy each others company – letting them catch up with old friends and make new ones that they can reconnect with at the Fair a month later. The Live Auction at the Salinas Valley Fair Kick Off Dinner Dance has also been a great source of fundraising and community support for the Heritage Foundation. Each year, the foundation offers once- in- a-lifetime experiences from Super Bowl parties to progressive dinners and prime rib dinners for community supporters and their friends. This interaction with the Heritage Foundation membership and Board of Directors strengthens community bonds and allows people to see a different side of the Heritage Foundation. The Heritage Foundation also enjoys success and community support with the annual fundraiser Polenta and Stew Feed held in December. In 2012, more than 600 community members came out to support the event which includes dessert auction, toy drive and appearance from Santa Claus. The Polenta and Stew Feed has become a must-attend event with people driving for miles to get a taste of the famous South County polenta and stew. As with all organizations and events, the Heritage Foundation must credit its success to the membership and Board of Directors. Without their support, most of their events would not happen. Even though many of the Heritage Foundation Board Members have served more than 5 years on the board, they continually bring new members to the board and into the organization, helping to grow and evolve along with the needs of their membership. Mere thanks are not enough for the enormous community support throughout the last 13 years. Because of that support there are two landmark barns and a brand new entry office and bathroom facility at the Salina Valley Fair. The Heritage Foundation Board of Directors looks forward to our next project and what the next 13 years will bring.

Carnival Lights – nights and days too!

ow perfect is this year’s theme – Country Nights and Carnival Lights! The carnival has always been the center of attraction and action! Whirl and dip and turn and speed at the carnival at the Salinas Valley Fair. Shrieking and twirling and upside down riding – day and night. It’s all part of the fun. As always Butler Amusements has some great thrill rides. With names like Sky Diver, Himalaya, Ring of Fire, Century Wheel, Flying Swinger, Zipper, Tornado, Graviton, Windsurfer, Scramble, Flying Swinger, U-Toob Funhouse, Moonwalk Funhouse and the Zillerator Roller Coaster, carnival fans will be in for a treat. The Kiddie Carnival has its venue, right along Division Street. Included this year in the rides for the younger fairgoers are Rock ‘n’ Tug, Quad Runner, Big Foot Trucks, Berry Go Round, 1st Squadron, Orient Express and Lolli Swing, the slide and much more awaits even the youngest ride. This year there are the Jeeps and Dino from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. And of course, no carnival would be complete without a Grand Carousel. The Carnival opens 3 p.m. Thursday and noon Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pay One Price Wristbands are available on site each day of the fair for $28 and can also be purchased in advance for a discounted price of $23 at the King City, Soledad and Gonzales Rabobank branches and at the fair administration office. LOOK OUT!! HERE COMES JULES... The crowds love this guy! Jules Ross is an award-winning physical comedian who has spent over 20 years creating laughter. Best known for his performances on Venice Beach, California Jules was recently featured in “Venice Beach Heart & Soul,” a book highlighting 30 years of Venice Beach street performers
where he is recognized for his talent and legendary status as a street performer. Jules combines his classical mime training/clowning with a lightningfast shadowing technique to produce a powerful physical comedy routine. His humor is reminiscent of Chaplin/ Marceau and his style professional.
LANKY THE CLOWN So what’s not to like about a clown – a really good clown? For the first time Lanky will be on grounds entertaining youngsters of all ages. He has been everywhere, from private clubs to county and state fairs and festivals across North America to International Fairs (Japan). In addition, international goodwill clowning tours and church clowning are part of his dedication to the art.
He has repeatedly toured Russia and Guatemala, and has toured Afghanistan and Cambodia as part of an International Coalition of Clowns put together by renowned medical doctor, Patch Adams - yes the same Patch from the famed movie. Watch out for Lanky but if you don’t find him, he will undoubtedly find you!
FABLES OF THE WEST
Get ready to ride with the biggest little cowboys on the Old West trail. If you’re coming to the fair in 2013, you’re sure to get a ‘kick’ from the Fables of The West gang and their trusty steeds, so popular last year they were asked to perform again at this year’s fair. The cowboy comedy team (often referred to as “the little cowboys on the little horses”) has, in just 12 years’ time, performed at over 600 fairs and events from Alaska to Florida to Texas to their home state of California. And just what is it these ‘Fables’ cowboys do? “Its high energy and interactive, and we try to involve fair Page 30
guests by literally making them the main focus of the show,” says Ken McMeans, owner and founder of the Fables team. The group is actually labeled as a strolling grounds actnever really having a specific show time nor needing (or wanting) to be on a stage (“too far away from the crowd,” says Ken). “I guess I should give some credit to the horses we ride (‘faux’ Muppet-like miniatures), though they seem to sometimes steal our thunder.” Ken points out that every show is different and fresh, because, after all, the majority of it is improv. “We mostly make it up on the spot as we go along.”

Dianey Duran, Gonzales FFA, raises 2013 Heritage Animal
D
ianey Duran of Gonzales FFA will be in the fair exhibiting the 2013 Heritage animal, a market hog. It will be the last hog for the Junior Livestock Auction and proceeds benefit the SVF Heritage Foundation. She was chosen as the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation 2013 Livestock Scholarship winner in December. Duran, a senior at Gonzales High School, was chosen from a pool of extremely qualified applicants through an application and interview process. “Our whole committee was very impressed by Dianey’s charisma and commitment to her FFA Chapter,” said Ralph Rianda, Heritage Foundation Livestock Scholarship Committee Chair. “Dianey also is committed to the Salinas Valley Fair and Monterey County Fair through her participation in the junior fairboard.” As part of her application, Duran expressed a feeling of pride in being the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation Livestock Scholarship winner, not only for herself, but the FFA chapter where she currently serves as the President. “I would be extremely honored to be selected to raise the Salinas Valley Fair livestock scholarship animal and set an example for the Gonzales FFA chapter.” As the scholarship recipient, Duran receives a $1,500 scholarship, a $500 cash prize and will have all the expenses for her animal, including purchase and feed will be paid for by the Heritage Foundation. Duran will be raising a hog for the 2013 Heritage Animal, which will then be sold to benefit the Heritage Foundation during the Salinas Valley Fair Junior Livestock Auction on Saturday, May 18. Green Valley Farm Supply in Gonzales, is also donating all the feed and supplies for the raising of the Heritage animal. If you would like to become a buyer for the Heritage

Junior Livestock Auction all day Saturday
ore than $1.5 million. That’s how much the 2012 Junior Livestock Auction buyers paid for the more than 800 animals that went through the ring. “I never cease to be amazed how much support our 4-H, FFA and independent exhibitors earn,” said Nate Holaday, longtime fair director and organizer of the Junior Livestock Auction. “Every year we seem to top the previous year and last year was no exception. I can’t thank our buyers enough!” That tradition will continue Saturday morning at 8AM sharp in the Rava Arena when the first hog goes through the ring. Last year’s auction generated just over $1.5 million, paid to the youth exhibitors. There are about 900 animals that will go through the auction ring and if everything runs like clockwork, the auction should be finished by early evening. New this year - market animals will be sold in two auction rings. The Sale will begin with hogs sold simultaneously in Auction Rings A and B concluding with the Heritage Hog, followed by a buyer’s lunch provided by American Ag Credit. The Auction will resume to sell Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Animals of each species in Auction Ring A. The Sale of Champions will be followed by heifers selling in Ring A and meat goats selling in Ring B. The Auction will conclude with market lambs selling simultaneously in Auction Rings A and B. The new auction format is done with hopes that the addition of the second sale ring will reduce the overall length of the Junior Livestock Auction. Thanks to the buyers, the animals sold bring a good return to the exhibitors who have already spent time in the show ring to have their animals evaluated by the judges. The Junior Livestock Auction, which is broadcast live by KRKC, brings together the efforts of dozens of volunteers and the generosity of many businesses. Staff members from Rabobank are not only ringside, but also work diligently behind the scenes to make sure the checks are available within hours. 101 Livestock auctioneers donate their time. This year King City auctioneer Mackenzie Bailey will again be spending some time behind the microphone, along with Jim Warren, Monty Avery, Mike Johnson, Rodney Bianchi and Mark Wright. American AgCredit sponsors the buyers’ lunch. The breakfast is sponsored by the California Women for Agriculture. Industrial Pump Shop, Mike and Mary Orradre and Rosa’s Catering sponsor the buyers’ reception. In the barn area, volunteers work closely with project leaders and

exhibitors to make sure the animals are brought into the ring in a timely manner, no mean feat. The ringmen watch closely to catch every bid, begging, and cajoling when necessary, to get the best price for each animal. The auctioneers, in their unique measured cadence, keep the auction moving and make sure the seller and buyer each get their due. “Our volunteers really make the difference,” said Holaday. “With hundreds of animals and exhibitors, it still runs smoothly.” Holaday reminded exhibitors that a great way for them honor their buyers is to support the Heritage Foundation and purchase the very popular buyers cards. “The Heritage Foundation is responsible for our fabulous barns and the new Livestock Office and shower/ bathrooms,” he said. The Salinas Valley Fair and the Junior Livestock Auction Committee work hard to make the process easy for the buyer. If the buyer wishes to resell the animal, he is billed the difference between the price paid and the market price. If the buyer wishes to have the animal slaughtered, a custom marketing service will deliver the carcass to the butcher of the buyer’s choice. The third alternative is live pick-up. The animal will be held at the fairgrounds for the buyer. Come down to the Junior Livestock Auction Saturday,

Junior Fairboard is Busy The Salinas Valley Fair Junior Fairboard is a youth organization that works and helps out in our community and especially at the fair. Junior Fairboard is happy to announce that it has tripled in size from last year. We work at barrel races and ropings often. Every year we organize a Pedro Party. We get prizes generously donated from local businesses for our Pedro players. We voted that all of our profit from this year’s party would be donated to the Todd Daines Scholarship fund because Todd was our former president. We also assist at the Fair’s tMiss Salinas Valley Fair competition and at the Kick Off dinner. Soon we will be putting four wooden, crazy-looking cows on lawns from Lockwood to Salinas as a fun fundraiser asking for donations to help our organization. The busiest time of year for us is during Salinas Valley Fair. We do an enormous amount of work during the fair, May 16-19, 2013
ranging from helping in the livestock office, to assisting in the animal arenas, with the vegetables and watering flowers. We are very excited and thankful this year because of the new livestock office which will be ready for this year’s fair. Our community gives so much to us, all we want to do is give back.
