HEROIC VETS
DIFFERENT KIND OF VETS
Stories and photos by Phil Ray Jack - Special to the Equine Enthusiast
Tommy and Richard Mills relax after a long trail ride that began in Morgan City, La., and ended in Mosca, Colo. The employees at the McDonalds in Alamosa, Colo., were surprised when three men on horses rode up to the driveup window to place their orders. Richard Mills was finishing a trail ride he had begun in Morgan City, La., and the other two cowboys, Gary Walker and Corey Pearson, joined him on the last leg of the journey. Mills rode to raise awareness of how horse rescue ranches like Buck Creek Valley Animal Rescue Farm, which was founded by him and his wife, Robin, can

benefit a community. “Too many of our young people get caught up in a cycle of self-destruction. Communities need to come together to break that cycle,” he explains. Rescuing horses that have been abused and neglected is only the first step. Mills continued, “You take a horse that has an injured spirit and bring it together with a human who also has an injured spirit, and then you see miracles take place. They heal each other.”
The horses come first at Buck Creek Valley. “We will go hungry before the horses do,” Mills said. “Whether we are working with troubled youth or military veterans, we start at the beginning and teach them to accept responsibility for taking care of the horses. They’ll muck stalls and haul hay before they begin working with the horses.” That’s when the healing begins. It takes time to build trust when an animal or a person has been injured and abused
– the horse has to learn how to trust the human, and the humans have to be patient and understand that they have to earn that trust. “That’s where the miracle comes in,” Mills said. “Accepting responsibility of caring for the horse and developing the patience that is needed to win trust helps people overcome the challenges they face. Veterans coming home from war zones have benefitted from working with Mills’ horse rescue. So have children

with autism and those who have trouble connecting with other people. The connection between horse and human – the mutual needs that are met – help both to heal. Riding across the country to promote his cause is not new to Mills. “You can write stories, show movies, and talk about it all you want, but nothing comes close to creating the excitement people have when they see you riding across the country on horseback,” he says. Mills stopped frequently to let people, especially children, pet the horses while he explained what he was doing. “Everywhere I’ve gone,” he says, “people have been great. We’ve faced some unexpected and serious obstacles in our paths, but there was always someone there to help us continue. We rode through ice storms in Louisiana and had problems finding water in Texas because of the drought, but people have always come through for us.” The well-being of the horses always came first. Mills frequently visited veterinarians along the way to have the horses “checked out,” as well as having farriers check the horses’ hooves. “It wouldn’t make sense to hurt horses in order to raise awareness of animal neglect and abuse,” Mills said. So when his horse would get worn, Mills would switch it for a fresh mount, or stop for a few days to give the animal rest. Mills himself lost about 20 pounds on the ride.

“That’s what happens when you’re living off of Vienna Sausages and Beanie Weanies,” he laughed. “But you know, everyone should spend some time in the saddle and see what it’s like to connect with a horse. And when you are with a horse 24/7 for two months, you get to know each other really well.” Tommy, a mustang owned by Corey Pearson of CP Horse Training in Mosca, Colo., was Mills’ mount for most of the ride. “I put more than a thousand miles on this horse,” Mills said as he patted the horse’s shoulder affectionately. “He’s a mountain horse, and nothing fazed him
– except for windmills. For some reason, those great big windmills would get to him.” Pearson and Gary Walker, owner of SLV Horses LLC in Mosca, became interested early. “I’m a vet, Mills is a vet, and the idea of veterans working together to support and help other vets appealed to me,” Walker said. “Besides, I love horses and I understood what Richard (Mills) is doing. I wanted to help in any way I could. So when Walker and Corey heard the call for fresh horses, they loaded Tommy into a horse trailer and drove out to
meet Mills – and try to convince him to move his rescue program to the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. “We are considering it,” Mills said. “There seems to be a need for a horse rescue out here.” Because of the recent drought and the scarcity of hay in the region, many people felt they couldn’t take care of their horses and let released them into the wild. This has created serious problems for local ranchers and farmers, as well as putting an added strain on the environment. “Wild horses know how to survive in
the wild, but these horses don’t,” Mills said. “We like to begin by giving people the help and support they need to take care of their own horses. If that doesn’t work, we want to provide a place for them to take their animals so we can take care of them and find someone to adopt them. Then we want to bring in the animals that are struggling to survive out there.” “No one can do it alone,” Mills explained. “It takes the whole community working together to make something like this work. And maybe that’s another thing that horse rescue does. It brings a community together.”

HORSE YEAR
IN THE WILD WEST IT’S ALWAYS THE YEAR OF THE HORSE By: Karyn Zoldan - Special to the Equine Enthusiasts In the Chinese zodiac, 2014 is year of the horse. People born in the year of the horse are considered energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able. The same can be said of horses, magnificent animals who when abused, suffering, and in danger of slaughter require assistance from rescues from Equine Voices and Sanctuary in Amado, Ariz. Many of the horses are older and lame meaning the Sanctuary will probably be their forever home. Actually, there’s a Zen to the ranch with its vast mountainous horizons, clean air, and the best of the Old West where loving volunteers tend to their needs. Five more acres have recently been added and will be turned into a training and adoption center for adoptable horses. Late last year Equine Voices announced the arrival of four of 21 orphaned Navajo foals recently rescued
by Wild for Life Foundation (WFLF) through their Lifetime Equine Refuge under the Navajo Horses Rescue and Recovery Mission. The foals had been discovered in life threatening situations after their mothers were rounded up and sent to slaughter. Three of the foals Catori, Dakotah and Nitika have done well but the smallest, Shikoba, was weaned too early and requires special nutrients. When the economy suffers, horses suffer. Equine Voices is a member of Arizona Coalition of Equines (ACE), an organization which focuses on positive solutions for horses and their owners. ACE implemented an Assistance Program to provide help to eligible applicants on a temporary basis. While Equine Voices originally began as a way to save horses from the PMU (pregnant mare urine) line making the hormonal drug Premarin, during its 10 years have also rescued burros,
abused horses used to carry illegal drugs across the border, horses destined for slaughter as food in other countries, as well as other horrific situations.

HORSE TOUR
COPPER CLOUD SOUTHWEST HORSEBACK TOURS By: Jamie Brough - Special to the Equine Enthusiast Photos supplied by Copper Cloud As Edward Abbey said, “A man on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle will see more, feel more, and enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles.” In an era when gadgetry and convenience are prioritized, there is an undeniable and universal allure to a more intimate mode of transportation. Similarly, the importance of horsemanship in the story of the southwest’s inception and its burgeoning ranching industry is undeniable. For many tourists, and even native Arizonans, that deep relationship goes unexplored. Learning just the basics of the culture and practices can create an experience that is both one-of-a-kind, and a miniature time warp. Located just off Highway 89 in Big Water, Utah, Copper Cloud Ranch has been whisking its customers away on just such adventures. Their train of experienced horses and knowledgeable guides trek through the most awesome scenery near the Utah/Arizona border such as the Pincushion, and getting right alongside the ridges of Lake Powell. It’s an opportunity for tourists to experience the area in a fashion reminiscent of the early pioneers and ranchers of the Southwest. New to Copper Cloud Ranch since October 2013 is Amy Hultzman. HORSE TOUR from page 10 Originally from New Jersey, she came to the southwest in 1998 to partially escape her prior corporate jobs and pursue her passion with horses. “I’ve always been a horse person,” she said. “It was just one of those natural transitions when I came out here. I made the transition from showing to western and it has been amazing. I guess now I won’t get to play hooky since I’m essentially running this side of the business now.” While their new booking hub and store in Page, Ariz. may not brandish the Copper Cloud Ranch name or decor, its elegant simplicity has helped attract more potential horse aficionados. Hultzman has also been utilizing her experience in businesses administration to expand the reach of the ranch in the years to come. “We went with naming the new location ‘Horseback Adventures’ because that’s really what they are. We didn’t want to give just strict head-to-tail rides,” said Hultzman. “We offer customization and freedom that you just couldn’t get with cut and dry trail rides. If someone wants to go faster, or gallop, or wants to learn more advanced techniques on the way, we offer those opportunities.” Copper Cloud Ranch offers further lessons in roping and other more adventurous endeavors for those with the fire of an inner rancher. Trailblazing and exploring are equally encouraged for customers on longer trips. Futures look bright for the Copper Cloud gang as they look to expand their services beyond trail rides.
