TCSD gains four new firefighters

Community Spotlight

Staff report TEMPLETON — The Templeton Community Services District Fire Department swore in four new firefighter trainees to the position of firefighters in April. Craig Pennington, Scott Groomer, Luke Doolin and Trevor Aguilar were sworn in by Interim Fire Chief Keith Aggson. “I believe these three firefighters will serve the community well and that Templeton is extremely lucky to have firefighters of this quality and integrity on the Templeton Fire Department,” said Aggson. All of the firefighters participated in a grueling six-month training process that included both hands-on and intensive standard operations policy training. The training concluded with a cumulative performance evaluation of related firefighting tasks. Pennington joined the Templeton Fire Department in September 2014 as a Firefighter/EMT. Pennington recently graduated from the Allan Hancock College Fire Academy and is a state certified EMT. Pennington most recently represented Templeton Fire Department in the Seattle “Stair Climb” which raised over $9,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As part of this ceremony, Pennington repeated the oath of office and was pinned with his firefighter badge by his father Kurt Pennington, a 22-year veteran Fire Captain for the Templeton Community Services District. Groomer joined the Templeton Fire Department in September 2014. Groomer recently graduated from the San Luis County Paid Call Firefighter Fire Academy and is a state certified EMT. He also works full-time as a Firefighter/EMT for

here’s a whole lot of stitching going on at Meg Roberts’ Studio Stitch afterschool sewing school in Atascadero! Children and adults from all over the county are learning to sew from Roberts, who has taught children all of her life and is a licensed Kids Can Sew and Fashion Design Instructor. It’s been 10 years since Roberts first opened her ‘Studio Stitch’ after-school classes and summer sewing camps in northern Atascadero, just one off ramp south of Templeton. Each class has between 4-6 students, with weekly two-hour classes offered for adults. Private lessons are available for adults and children as well as one-time lessons for those who want to know how to operate their own

sewing machine. This year, Roberts is full to capacity, with 40 students attending her fun classes each week in a warm and supportive environment. Roberts starts her students with a twohour introductory lesson on how to operate a sewing machine. With six high-quality Elna sewing machines in her studio, each student has their own machine to work on their individual projects. It is not necessary to have a machine at home in order to attend the classes. Students chose from a variety of project options, select their own fabric at local fabric stores, and learn to customize and individualize a pattern. Each week they work on their project under Roberts’ experienced guidance. The popular after-school classes for boys and girls run from September to May, while

staff at the TCSD are very much like family and all were in attendance to see DeQuattro off. She said that when she started she never thought it would turn into a 20-year career. “When I started I was a volunteer and after a few short years started working in accounts payable,” said DeQuattro. “I really love my job and all of the people I worked with here, now I get to be a full-time grandma, wife and really do whatever I want. It is exciting.” LaCaro and the TCSD presented DeQuattro with a gift basket, cake and pizza and were all saddened to be seeing her go. “Thank you for you’re many years of dedication, you will be missed by all of us,” he said. “We wish you joy and happiness in the next chapter of your life.”
