GRAND LANAI – LEVEL THREE
Join us on Kalākaua Avenue
just after sundown for the ceremonial lighting of our Lamakū Torch Tower. Then be immersed in an unforgettable storytelling performance told through Hawaiian and Polynesian song and dance. Honoring the beloved Queen Emma, our nightly show highlights the stories, traditions and culture of this special gathering place.
Since 1957, International Market Place has served as a gathering place for kama‘āina and visitors from around the world to meet, talk story, and be entertained. The history and culture of Waikīkī are woven throughout International Market Place with its flowing water features, symbolizing the ‘Apuakehau Stream, indigenous landscaping, and iconic banyan tree that is more than a century old.
The story continues with our first edition of Banyan, which celebrates our signature banyan tree and landmark located on Kalākaua Avenue, as well as the nostalgia of the past. The large Indian banyan tree, dating back to the
mid-1800s, is among the oldest historic trees in Waikīkī and is designated an “exceptional tree” by the City and County of Honolulu. Many generations have walked under its broad canopy; imagine the stories it could tell. From the original tree house, where Donn Beach “Don the Beachcomber” had his office that later evolved into a local radio station, to performances by worldfamous entertainer Don Ho, who got his start at International Market Place, we invite you to rediscover International Market Place. These stories we share with you today, while new, will always have a connection to our roots.

About Banyan and the Roots of International Market Place
Known as Kaluaokau in the days of Hawaiian royalty, International Market Place possessed an allure that is much the same now as it was back then—attracting not only locals but also entertainers, celebrities, and visitors from around the world. That same allure existed for decades at International Market Place since its opening in 1957. The charm of this wahi pana (storied place) was present in the display of cart vendors selling tropical trinkets, the array of exotic eateries, and the famous venues for live entertainment. In bringing the past to the present, Banyan presents a fascinating cultural perspective on Waikīkī and offers a glimpse at why International Market Place has been a sought after destination for centuries.— aaron j. salā and mālia p. ka ‘ aihue

O‘ahu-based leimaker Meleana Estes has been weaving lei since her tūtū, Amelia Ana Kaopua Bailey, lei-making icon in Hawai‘i, placed a needle and flower in her hand at the age of 5. Today, Estes perpetuates the spirit of leimaking, sharing the knowledge of this island treasure regularly in the Banyan Courtyard at International Market Place.
Estes grew up splitting time between her family’s fruit farm on Kaua‘i and her tūtū’s home in O‘ahu’s Mānoa Valley. She never left the Honolulu International Airport without at least three puakenikeni lei, all handmade by her tūtū, adorning her neck. In the seventh grade, she permanently moved to O‘ahu to attend Punahou Schools, leaving the farm’s communal comforts for her tūtū’s sprawling colonial revival home, where Estes currently lives.
She recalls how she would sit and watch as her tūtū wove and strung flowers together. For each birthday, sports game, recital or graduation, her tūtū handmade dozens of lei to be generously given away, instilling within Estes the value of showing one’s love through lei. “It developed this kuleana (responsibility) within me,” she says. “No matter the occasion, there was a lei for everyone.”
Meleana Estes perpetuates the spirit of aloha through her lei-making workshops.
Growing up surrounded by her tūtū’s colorful creations was not lost on Estes. In 2004, she launched a handbag line inspired by vintage, floral fabrics. Later, she moved to New York to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, calling on the laidback aesthetic of the Hawai‘i girl as inspiration. In 2012, upon her tūtū’s passing, Estes felt the call to continue her legacy. With a renewed love for lei-making, she began making lei po‘o, or head lei, for friends’ birthdays. Then, like her tūtū used to do, she began holding workshops to share the artform with others.
For Estes, lei transcends trend. In the spirit of her tūtū, each lei is carefully crafted. Everything about each lei—from the colors and type of the flowers to the stringing technique—is chosen with the wearer in mind. “The lei is this symbol of aloha in Hawai‘i,” Estes says. “Giving and receiving a lei, it’s how we show our love for one another.”

The life and legacy of Don Ho is celebrated with a moving tribute of the performer by artist Kim Duffett.
On August 13, 2017, what would have been Don Ho’s 87th birthday, family members, friends, and former musical colleagues gathered at the Banyan Court of Waikīkī’s International Market Place. They were there to witness the unveiling of the famed musician’s larger-than-life likeness, and commemorate his contribution to Hawaiian culture.
Behind a makeshift barricade, fans and onlookers speculated about the depiction of the beloved icon. Would Ho be sculpted as a football star, for his days on the field at Springfield College, or as a U.S. Air Force pilot, for his time flying cargo planes? Or would he be depicted onstage, recalling his raucous performances that lifted audiences out of their seats and sent them home in a haze of tropical delirium?
At the anointed hour, Honolulu artist Kim Duffett lifted the veil. There stood a bronze figure of a grinning Ho, one hand holding a microphone, the other beckoning. “I wanted to craft him in his prime,” Duffett says. “I wanted to do something with him in performance, transferring his weight from one foot to the other or calling out a singer or a grandmother he wants to put in the hot spot. I like to have a sense of movement, because it gives a piece life.”
DON HO TRUST | GRETA BEIGEL
Born in Honolulu in 1930, Donald Tai Loy Ho honed his singing chops at Honey’s, a bar his parents owned on O‘ahu’s east side. In the early 1960s, he emerged as a musical tour de force at clubs in Waikīkī. After one such nightclub appearance, Ho was approached by Duke Kahanamoku, who invited Ho to appear at his namesake supper club at the back of the original International Market Place. Ho signed on to perform three shows nightly with his band, the Aliis.
Radio host Kimo Kahoano attended many of Ho’s late-night shows at the Waikīkī venue. “There were lines and lines outside Duke’s with more and more people wanting to see Don and join in the fun,” Kahoano recalls. “He sang Hawaiian songs, English songs, whatever was popular at the time. The audiences loved the excitement.”
Ho soon catapulted into global stardom with television appearances and hit recordings, such as “Tiny Bubbles” and “I’ll Remember You.” But above all, Ho remained a masterful humorist and showman.
“He was funny and had a good sense of timing,” Kahoano continues. “Remember, Don was a pilot and understood what being in control was. He took that same concept and used it in his showcase. He would sit behind the organ, playing, like behind a command post. He knew where he wanted the show to go.”
Deeming it essential for an artist in Hawai‘i to establish a strong connection to the U.S. mainland, Ho scheduled performances across the country, from San Francisco to New York City. He also performed at Cocoanut Grove, the Los Angeles nightclub famed for presenting
top-drawer entertainers. Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton often dropped in to sing, share a laugh, or simply say hi to Ho.
With his ability to perform songs from any genre, Ho could have easily joined the ranks of “legit” singers, Kahoano says. But instead, the performer opted to let the good times roll and remain true to his local-boy roots. In his 2007 memoir, Don Ho: My Music, My Life , the legend marvels at his longevity in the spotlight. “It was no big thing in terms of what Mainland guys did—the Beatles or the Doors or whoever the hell they are,” Ho writes. “But I don’t think you will find many other groups that sustained themselves this long, night after night, for 45 years.”
Michael Mina infuses his personal experiences into two International Market Place restaurants, Stripsteak and The Street.
“It’s rare to have like 20 lifetimes in a career and not come close to learning everything,” says chef Michael Mina. “You think you know everything, and then you open a book, you travel to a new country.”
Two decades ago, at age 22, Mina took the helm of Aqua, San Francisco’s trailblazing fine-dining seafood restaurant. Today, he has opened 30 restaurants across the United States and in Dubai with Mina Group, which he founded with tennis star Andre Agassi in 2002.
But Mina’s love of food required no travel to take root. Rather, it began at home. Mina was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1969 and raised in Ellensburg, Washington, where his mother cooked every day for her family and her brothers and sisters in the area. He was working in a French restaurant in his hometown by 15. “I enjoyed the fact that you’re constantly using all of your senses, your mind—mental, physical, emotional—it’s just really stimulating,” Mina says. “And then you get such immediate gratification out of it when you make something and people love it. The restaurant felt like family.”
For the chef, the hospitality business is about family and celebration, and this is reflected in
his new concepts at International Market Place, Stripsteak and The Street. “The menu at Stripsteak is the exact menu I like to eat when I’m out with my family,” Mina says. Rather than favoring the standard steakhouse meal, it lends itself to a dining experience that starts with a few small plates of raw fish, like yuzu kampachi or ahi crudo with a roasted garlic ponzu, and then a shared steak, perhaps a rib eye or dry-aged New York strip.
Two floors down from the elegant, open-air Stripsteak, on the first floor of the International Market Place, is The Street. It is like an upscale, festive food court, with its indoor gathering space, food stalls, multiple bars, and live music nightly. According to Mina, it is one of the most exciting projects of which he has been a part.
It was inspired by the streetmarket settings where Mina and his chefs end up every year during food trips they take together to countries like Turkey and Singapore. At night, they walk up and down alleys and hit different stalls or restaurants or bars. Mina long thought it would be fun to create something similar. So, for The Street, he partnered with chef friends and “let them do what they
@thestreethi,
want to do,” he says. “The majority of them did something from their childhood, from their heritage.”
There’s Aloha Ice, which serves Hawai‘i’s favorite frozen dessert, shave ice, as reimagined by Michelle Karr-Ueoka: shavings of actual frozen fruit layered with goodies like mochi ice cream and haupia tapioca. For a stall across the way, International Smoke, Ayesha Curry designed a barbecue menu with
Stripsteak is located on The Grand Lānai on Level 3, and The Street is located near Saks Fifth Avenue on Level 1. 1 2 3
international flavors ranging from Korean ribs to jerk chicken. And then there’s Mina’s own concept, Little Lafa, which revolves around a flatbread his mom used to make. He tops the yogurtbased Israeli bread, a cross between a pocket bread and naan, with a range of Mediterranean flavors, from chermoula-roasted salmon to harissa chicken. Locals and visitors alike gather in the convivial atmosphere, sharing plates from
the various stalls and cheering when flaming punch bowls are served from The Myna Bird tiki bar. “You realize you’re really lucky,” Mina says. “Food is a big part of everybody’s life, and we get to be a part of that.”

The Street, a new social eating hall curated by Michael Mina, takes diners on a culinary journey with chefs from around the nation. In one bustling spot, patrons can sample ramen from Sonoma County’s Ken Tominaga, burgers from Washington D.C.’s David Varley, comfort food from the Bay Area’s Ayesha Curry, and
shave ice from Honolulu’s Michelle KarrUeoka—the options are as varied as they are delicious. We rounded up three individuals— all with diverse backgrounds and a deep affinity for cuisine—and asked them how they would spend $35 at The Street. Here’s a recap of their food-fueled day.

FROM : HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I OCCUPATION : TEA SPECIALIST
Kathy YL Chan consults on tea concepts, trends and development. She is based in New York City and Honolulu.
1. Tropical Shave Ice from Aloha Ice
$5.99
Michelle Karr-Ueoka’s creations are a must— the hard part is deciding which flavor. It usually comes down to Tropical Shave Ice with shaved pineapple and haupia sorbet, or Strawberry-Hibiscus Shave Ice with li hing strawberries and mocha ice cream. Best to go with a friend and share both.
2. Roar Smoothie from Indie Girl Wellness Bar
$10.99
They make some of the best smoothies on the island. My go-to order is “Roar”, with a base of matcha, bananas, and house-made macadamia nut milk.
3. Pistachio Cannoli from Nana Lu $2.99
It’s not easy finding cannolis in Hawai‘i, much less a great one. These are filled with whipped ricotta cream and dotted with crushed pistachios. Never a soggy shell.
4. The Avocado from Little Lafa $6.99
When I need a savory afternoon snack, I go to this concept created by Michael Mina himself and inspired by his childhood. This dish is made of ripe avocado halves marinated in jalapenos, zhug, garlic, and cilantro, then sliced, spooned into a bowl and topped with radishes and corn. A dream!
5. Everything Hawaiian Rolls and CoconutCurry Cornbread from International Smoke $0.99 each
My favorite items are the “hidden gems.” Ribs and brisket are popular here, but don’t overlook the sides. The rolls are plush and sweet, sprinkled with an everything bagel topping, and the cornbread is served warm from the oven, brushed with melted butter. I always take a few of these back home for breakfast the next day. 2 3 4 5

1. Strawberry Cream Tart from Lamill Coffee
$7.99
I love this tart. Being a baker as well, I can appreciate the not too heavy, not too sweet custard filling, topped beautifully with fresh strawberries. The crust is light and flaky, and would go wonderfully with an iced coffee to round out a meal.
2. Caesar Nicoise Salad from Mindful Greens
$9.99
I like that this salad is both rich and light at once. It has bright and creamy flavors, but isn’t too heavy. The romaine is crisp and refreshing while the roasted red pepper, parmesan, and hard-boiled egg bring some satisfying depth.
3. Fried Pickles with Rooster Dipping Sauce from Maui Onion Burger
$4.99
I lived in New Orleans for 8 years and still hold a special place in my heart for deep fried pickles. This is a rare find in Hawai‘i, and the pickles on offer at Maui Onion Burger make a great snack to go with your cocktail from The Myna Bird or whatever is on draft at the beer bar.

1. Mediterranean ‘Ahi from Mindful Greens
$10.99
It’s a nice alternative to a poke bowl. This pairing of a more ceviche-like ‘ahi on flatbread toast is refreshing as a midday snack.
2. Side of Hummus and Pita Bread fom Little Lafa
$6.99 and $0.99 I love hummus, and I’m always drawn to it. This, with the fresh, light pita bread is a great appetizer.
3. H20 Melon from Indie Girl Wellness Bar
$11.99
My love of food stems from wanting to eat healthy and experience flavors that I could not put together on my own. The watermelon, lime, and mint pressed juice is what I thought a fruit punch might taste like in Santorini.
