The south shore swell is back, and it can only mean one thing—it is officially summer in Waikīkī. Located only a few blocks away from International Market Place, surfers can paddle out to Queen’s surf break, one of the best waves in Waikīkī, especially for longboarders. This break is named after two of Hawai‘i’s ali‘i (royalty) who frequented this surf spot: Queen Ka‘ahumanu and Queen Lili‘uokalani. Before you hit the beach, make sure to check out all the latest summer fashions from Billabong, Surf Line Hawai‘i, Hawaiian Island Creations, and more. After, stop by the newly opened Kūhiō Avenue Food Hall for a Tropical Heat cocktail to quench your post-surf thirst.
In partnership with our state and affiliated tourism and volunteer organizations, we are excited to launch our new initiative to support the Mālama Hawai‘i campaign. This initiative encourages
everyone to reconnect with the land and leave Hawai‘i better than we found it. I am proud that we are partnering with Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i to offer beach cleanup kits for use. Visit International Market Place’s Customer Service Desk near Saks Fifth Avenue on Level 1 or ShopInternationalMarketPlace. com to learn more.
The reimagined International Market Place will celebrate its fifth anniversary this August. Join us as we host a collection of structured events honoring the center’s rich history of mea‘ai (food), mele (song), and mo‘omeheu (culture) all month long.
As always, mahalo to our customers for frequenting our shops and restaurants and, in turn, supporting the more than 2,000 employees who work at International Market Place. From our International Market Place ‘ohana to yours, we look forward to spending summer in Waikīkī with you.

About Banyan and the roots of International Market Place
Known as Kaluaokau in the days of Hawaiian royalty, International Market Place possesses an allure that is much the same now as it was back then—attracting not only locals but also entertainers, celebrities, and visitors from around the world. That allure has existed at International Market Place since its opening in 1957. For decades, the charm of this wahi pana (storied place) was present in the display of cart vendors selling tropical trinkets, the array of exotic eateries, and the famous venues for live entertainment. In bringing the past to the present, Banyan presents a fascinating cultural perspective on Waikīkī and offers a glimpse of why International Market Place has been a sought-after destination for centuries.

A Legacy in Bloom
Queen Emma’s healing spirit is reflected in the celebratory design of the International Market Place’s Celestial Pool and Queen’s Garden.
Queen Emma Kalanikaumaka‘amano Kaleleonālani Na‘ea Rooke was a visionary leader who devised clever and creative ways to provide for her people in perpetuity. With her humanitarian acts—ranging from founding schools, churches, and a hospital, to designating royal land to fund these institutions— the headstrong wife of King Kamehameha IV ignited a spark that would warm future generations. The valuable parcels of land she set aside in trust, including her homestead in the ‘ili (subdivision) of Kaluaokau, Waikīkī, served to insulate Hawaiians against the calamitous consequences of Western contact, including dwindling resources and rising health disparities.
LINDSEY KESEL | SKYE YONAMINE & COURTESY OF STARGAZERS OF HAWAII
Situated in Kaluaokau and part of the Queen Emma Land Trust, International Market Place helps sustain Queen Emma’s benevolent endeavors—‘Iolani School, St. Andrew’s Priory, and her most famous contribution, The Queen’s Medical Center (formerly known as the Queen’s Hospital), the largest private nonprofit hospital in Hawai‘i. To honor Queen Emma and her abiding gifts, the shopping center’s Queen’s Court features two emblematic design elements: the Queen’s garden and the celestial pool.
In the Queen’s garden, a variety of native plants vital to Hawaiian herbal medicine and royal tradition are found, including ‘ape, a natural remedy for burns and fever; ‘ēkaha (bird’s nest fern), helpful for treating asthma; and pōhinahina, sourced for medicinal tea. Also woven in are hāpu‘u, (Hawaiian tree fern), used in dressing wounds; kalo (taro), used to halt bleeding; and kī (ti), a treatment for asthma, fever, and headaches.
Planted up on Level 3 is ‘ōhi‘a lehua, its flower clusters sourced to alleviate childbirth pains, and hala, helpful for targeting thrush, childbirth difficulties, and chest pain. The royal plant
Starstruck
The heavens are within reach, even amid the dense urban playground of Waikīkī. With the help of a powerful telescope, Stargazers of Hawai‘i brings planets, stars, and other wonders of deep space into view during star shows on International Market Place’s Level 3 Grand Lānai. On special occasions, extended two-hour stargazing events are held on Level 6. For schedule updates and tickets, visit https://shopinternationalmarketplace.com/ events/stargazing
‘a‘ali‘i—a key ingredient in a potion to remedy skin rash—and ‘uki’uki—its berries a source of a purple-blue dye used in royal garments and accessories—can also be spotted around the courtyard.
On the Diamond Head side of Queen’s Court, the celestial pool is an elusive water feature created in the image of Lake Waiau, a heartshaped body of water near the summit of Maunakea on the island of Hawai‘i. A divine site for Native Hawaiian ceremonies and healing rituals, Lake Waiau became a healing destination for Queen Emma after the tragic death of her beloved husband and son.
A backlit stone disc forms the basin of the celestial pool, representing an illuminated night sky in the period of Ke Kā o Makali‘i (the Canoe-Bailer of Makali‘i)—a Hawaiian starline visible on winter nights that includes ‘A‘ā (commonly known as Sirius), the brightest star in the sky and a crucial point of reference in Native Hawaiian wayfinding. With design help from the late master navigator Kālepa Baybayan, the pool also illustrates the four cardinal directions of the Hawaiian star compass—hikina (east), komohana (west), 'ākau (north) and hema (south)—along with the four major winds and seven directional
houses that guide the rising and setting of various stars and constellations in each quadrant.
As the last royal visitor to make the long trek to the piko kapu, or sacred center, of Maunakea in 1881, Queen Emma was seeking solace and rejuvenation in Lake Waiau. In the clear, shallow calm of the celestial pool, one senses the hint of comfort that Queen Emma might have felt as she immersed herself in the healing waters where earth and sky meet.
Food for Thought
Three food enthusiasts visit International Market Place’s new Kūhiō Avenue Food Hall to sample items from the venue’s recently launched dining concepts, Banzai Burger and La Pina Cantina.
Mushroom Burger and Hawaiian Burger $12 each
The mushroom-and-Swiss combo is a classic, and this one will not disappoint. We also love anything teriyaki, so the Hawaiian Burger is right up our alley; since we tend to go for flavors that are a little on the sweeter side, the grilled pineapple was a welcome addition.

Birria Beef Tacos
$12 each
Birria has quickly become one of our favorite new food trends. Here the birria comes in a set of three perfectly crispy tortilla shells with a side of lime and salsa roja, which adds a nice, juicy texture and kick.
Fried Calamari
$13 each
We like how the calamari are only lightly breaded. This appetizer is perfect to share with friends before or after the beach—the service is quick, the restaurant is breezy, open air, and casual, and the parking in International Market Place is really convenient. And there are a lot of nearby shops if you want to walk it off before hitting the water!lime and salsa roja, which adds a nice, juicy texture and kick.
A classically trained musician, former bartender, and occasional beverage consultant and food writer, Randy Wong has spent the last two decades traveling for gigs and finding harmonies between food, beverage, culture, and community.
Elote Mexican Street Corn
$7 each
Stunningly presented and always a showstopper, elote is one of my favorite street foods of all time. Fire roasted and still on the cob, every kernel is coated with an irresistible blend of Mexican cheese and mayonnaise. La Pina’s has just the right blend of salt, spice, and everything nice.
Shrimp Ceviche $15 each
Although poke (a local dish of cubed, seasoned raw fish) is everywhere in Hawai‘i, ceviche is harder to come by. The bright zing of citrus pairs well with the light smokiness and slight minerality of the IMP Paloma with mezcal.
Mexican Salad $14 each
Taking a breather from plate lunches, but still wanting meat, I grabbed this salad with carne asada. The machaca-like beef strips are packed with flavor, and I love the way the lettuce is finely chopped. The dish is so balanced; everything is in harmony. A bonus: the salad is chilled, which makes it more refreshing.
IMP Paloma with mezcal
$9 each
A refreshing update to the thirst-quenching classic. The added warmth from the cinnamon amplifies the light, smokey taste of the mezcal.
La Pina Pineapple Split $18 each
This is a love-atfirst-sight, super Instagrammable dish. If you’re addicted to the ’gram, this item is a total must. It’s a pineapple palace with churros that encase a giant scoop of coconut gelato topped with even more pineapple and a chocolate drizzle. Everyone who passes by will want a taste.

The local music scene refused to keep quiet during the pandemic. Instead, with events like International Market Place’s virtual talk story and concert series, Market Place Mele and Music & Mixology, Hawai‘i artists got creative with new ways to connect and spread the aloha spirit through their music.
To say 2020 was a quiet year for the entertainment scene would be an understatement. With everyone tucked away in their homes, the city’s usual hustle and bustle seemed to transform overnight into a scene of silence.
Honolulu’s local musicians, however, are not the type to stay quiet. Instead, they seized atypical 2020 as an opportunity to find new ways to create connections through song, even as social distancing put
an end to live shows and gatherings. That meant participating in projects like International Market Place’s virtual series, which created spaces for artists, cultural practitioners, and storytellers to share their work safely over Facebook Live and YouTube. Some of the island’s biggest and most exciting musicians joined in, but it was only one step in their pandemic journeys, which tested their creativity as communicators, artists, and community members.

NATALIE SCHACK | JOHN HOOK & COURTESY OF HAKU COLLECTIVE & INTERNATIONAL MARKET PLACE
Miner
Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Entrepreneur
Kimié Miner was at a career high when the pandemic shift happened. Not only was she slated to present at the Grammy Awards, she started the year celebrating a nomination herself for Best Regional Roots Music Album. As co-founder of talent production and management group Haku Collective, she was also excited for the ways her business would expand and grow in 2020. Fast forward to March, and instead she found herself juggling the stress of being a mother (she welcomed her third child during the pandemic), an artist, and an entrepreneur in a
difficult, unprecedented time. “All of the issues that we’ve gone through over the past year ... it’s been a lot,” Miner says. “It’s about hope now. And it’s about sharing positivity, and it’s about helping. To let people know: We’re all in this together.”
To cope, she found solace in her work as well as in her professional and personal relationships. In fact, one of Miner’s goals during the pandemic was to find a way to continue to bring artists together, like with her Mele in Hawai‘i virtual concert series, which supported more than 50 artists from around
the world. She also dove into more collaboration, working with young musicians on the full-length album Children of the Sea.
Though the pandemic may have changed how she nurtured her creativity and relationships, Miner didn’t let it stop her from doing what she does best—producing art.
“You just want to celebrate the good moments that we have and commiserate through the bad ones,” she says. “And even though it’s so hard, you’re not alone.”

@taimanegardner
Taimane Gardner
Ukulele Virtuoso, Composer
For Taimane Gardner, the pandemic allowed her to form a meaningful musical connection with someone she doesn’t get to focus on in her typically packed touring schedule— herself. The first three months of 2020 saw her jetting from Germany to the U.S. East Coast to Samoa; when the world locked down, she found herself grounded, and no one knew how long it would last.
For Gardner, though, it was a blessing in many ways. “I loved being in my home with my boyfriend and being able to see Hawai‘i in a fresh way that I knew I would never see again,” she says. Gardner spent her time taking sunset jogs, diving into the songwriting process for her upcoming album, recording tracks at the Mānoa studio out of which she works, and prepping her new drummer for the return of live gigs in the post-pandemic future. Her new album, slated to come out later this year, explores her cultural background through Polynesian myths. Having the time and space to sit with and dive into those concepts made the year particularly special from a creative standpoint. “It’s the extroverted and then the introverted side, you know?” she says. “It was a lot of extroversion [before], which is great! But you also need that introverted time to write the music that everyone wants to hear.”

Alx Kawakami Singer-songwriter, Guitarist
Alx Kawakami’s 2020 calendar was booked solid. He had moved back home to Hawai‘i from Los Angeles to pursue a local music career in 2016, and since then had been steadily building a schedule that included shows in Japan, local concerts with big names such as Henry Kapono, and regular live gig bookings across the islands. Then, everything screeched to a standstill.
At first, it seemed like a welcome break for Kawakami. Suddenly, he, like the rest of the state, found himself spending a lot of time at home. But that meant a lot less time doing one of the things he loved most: playing for a crowd.
“At first, my thought was, ‘All right, cool. We’ll take a month off.’ It’d be the first time in my life that I took some time off,” Kawakami says. “About two weeks into the quarantine, I started to get antsy. I felt like I had to do something to play music.”
He took to Instagram Live to broadcast his own backyard jam sessions, and the enthusiastic response from Instagram users extended beyond the islands.
Kawakami realized the platform was a unique chance to connect with new fans, affording a more direct, intimate level of connection that he normally wouldn’t be able to offer in an in-person concert setting. Instead of managing the energy of a crowd, he was responding and reacting to one-on-one feedback from users.
And because the videos took place in his own backyard, viewers got a more personal glimpse into his life—even meeting his baby son, who often gets involved in the jam sessions. “It took a little time for me to get used to playing to a camera and watching comments pop up, but I got into a rhythm of how to talk to people.”
The live streams were such a success that by the spring of 2021, Kawakami had played more than 100 shows.
