Aloha Kākou! Mahalo for your continued support of International Market Place and our merchants throughout another unique year. At International Market Place, we have had a lot to celebrate including our 5th year anniversary and welcoming over 15 new merchants to the center. New retailers included South Shore Studio, Opal Fields, DeRubeis Fine Art, and more. On the third level Grand Lānai, home to Waikīkī’s largest collection of restaurants, we welcomed three new locally owned and operated restaurants consisting of Skybox Taphouse, Liliha Bakery and Moani Waikiki.
At our company’s core we have always been stewards of the community in which we live and work in. In addition to our team’s volunteer hours, this was the second year of our Community First program. Through this program, we donated over $30,000 to local
nonprofits, as well as launched new initiatives for customers to support the Waikiki Aquarium or do their own beach cleanup in partnership with Sustainable Coastlines in support of the state’s Mālama Hawai‘i campaign.
As we look ahead to the next five years at International Market Place, we want to extend our thanks to our loyal customers for frequenting our shops, restaurants and programs, and in turn, supporting more than 2,000 employees that live across O‘ahu.
From our International Market Place ‘ohana to yours, we send you warm wishes this holiday season and into the new year.

About Banyan and the roots of International Market Place
Known as Kaluaokau in the days of Hawaiian royalty, International Market Place possesses an allure that is much the same now as it was back then—attracting not only locals but also entertainers, celebrities, and visitors from around the world. That allure has existed at International Market Place since its opening in 1957. For decades, the charm of this wahi pana (storied place) was present in the display of cart vendors selling tropical trinkets, the array of exotic eateries, and the famous venues for live entertainment. In bringing the past to the present, Banyan presents a fascinating cultural perspective on Waikīkī and offers a glimpse of why International Market Place has been a sought-after destination for centuries.

Night Lights
The majestic Lamakū Tower salutes Waikīkī’s night fishermen and the faithful beacons that guided them home.
Long before it became a bustling tourist town, Waikīkī was once a hotbed of fresh catch for Native Hawaiians. Many species of fish could be found after dark, so lawai‘a (fishermen) would lie in wait for hours upon end—near the shoreline and above or beyond the reef, depending on their intended targets. Should the good graces of Kū‘ula, the Hawaiian god of fishermen, be with them, the lawai‘a would return with enough protein to feed their families and barter with upland farmers for kalo (taro), ‘ulu (breadfruit), and other staples.
Armed with generations of local fishing wisdom, the night lawai‘a chose their weapons according to the size and activity of their prey. To stalk shallow swimmers and rock dwellers, they wielded 6-foot-long spears made from kauila or other hardwoods. To ensnare sea creatures at greater depths, they relied on bone
hooks attached to lines made from olonā plant fiber, baiting the hooks with fish, shrimp, or crab. Handwoven olonā traps were set for small fish, shrimp, and lobster, and lay nets or scoop nets could efficiently collect fish such as ‘ōpelu (mackerel scad) traveling in schools. Stone sinkers, cowrie-shell or pearl-shell lures, and other crafty implements were often a part of the strategy.
Integral on overnight missions, torches known as lamakū illuminated the lawai‘a’s path and improved his odds by drawing in curious fish. The lamakū were made from the midrib of a coconut leaf wrapped in ti leaves and adorned with kukui nuts, which would burn all night when strung together. In the capture technique lamalama, lamakū were waved over the water’s surface to dazzle the fish, allowing time for a stone’s throw to send them darting into the lawai‘a’s net. Following a successful harvest, the lawai‘a would head to the ko‘a (fishing shrine) to leave an offering of gratitude for their ‘aumakua (ancestors).
Standing 30 feet above International Market Place’s Kalākaua entrance, Lamakū Tower honors the efforts of these dedicated lawai‘a, as well as their ingenuity in crafting fishing tools such as the lamakū. Just as the crucial role of Waikīkī’s freshwater streams is personified throughout the center’s interior, the iconic cascading fire tower celebrates the cultivation of the area’s rich saltwater resources with a series of 4-foot-tall stainless steel, bronzefinished lanterns.
Every evening at sundown, the ceremonial lighting of the Lamakū Tower guides spectators to the O Nā Lani Sunset Stories hula performance inside Queen’s Court. And like the kukui nut torches of old, Lamakū Tower’s welcoming glow can be spotted from miles away on a clear night.
When the Keolanui brothers decided to open a restaurant, they were musicians, not restaurateurs. Though they were used to serving up songs to crowds ravenous for sweet reggae jams, moving to the rhythm of a commercial kitchen was not in their repertoire. What they did know, however, was that like every song, every restaurant begins with a stroke of inspiration.
Caleb and Micah G. have stewed on the idea for Moani for years. The brothers grew up in a large, musical family whose warm, lively parties were famous throughout the East Honolulu neighborhoods of Hawai‘i Kai and Kuli‘ou‘ou.
“If you’re from [the area], you’ve probably been to a Keolanui family function in some way,” explains general manager Ikaika Sczymanski. “Tutu’s garage was kind of like the gathering place. That’s where everybody came to enjoy food and drinks. And being a family of musicians, there was always music happening too—someone busted an ukulele out or a guitar, and people would sing, and laugh, and have a good time.”
Recognizing how special their upbringing was, the brothers wanted a way to share the vibrant atmosphere of a Keolanui kanikapila
JACKIE OSHIRO | JOHN HOOK
(jam session) with the world. In 2019, Moani Island Bistro & Bar opened in Kapolei, featuring a lineup of Keolanui family favorite dishes adapted by veteran chef Michael Leslie. With daily live music, comfort foods served family style, and ample aloha, Moani quickly became a local favorite.
So when the opportunity arose for Moani to expand into Waikīkī, the decision was a no-brainer. The Keolanuis were determined to bring the joy of food, family, and music to a larger audience—and prove Moani was more than a one-hit wonder.
Although Moani Waikiki’s demographic isn’t as locally focused as the Kapolei location, attracting a mix of residents and visitors, the restaurant continues to remain true to the Keolanuis’ mission of standing proud in what it means to be local.
This local pride is seen in all the usual ways: locally-sourced ingredients, local talent on stage, and even locally designed upholstery. Much like its Kapolei location, Moani Waikiki feels as if you’ve been invited into the Keolanui family home.
For visitors and locals alike, Waikīkī can sometimes feel like a performance of Hawai‘i, catering to the stereotypes of what the islands are imagined to be rather than what they actually are. Even many of the restaurants and attractions that claim to sell an authentic experience of local culture do so with visitor tastes and preferences in mind. But among the kitschy tiki bars and tourist traps, Moani Waikiki stands apart.
“We want to provide a place where local people can come to Waikīkī and feel like they belong.
[The restaurant] is geared towards locals. We want to show our visitors this is the food that we enjoy, we made it for our tastes, and we want to share it with you,” Sczymanski says, explaining that capturing the atmosphere of a Keolanui family party means ensuring that both the food and music are local-first.
“Our music is local music. It’s not just Hawaiian music. [The bands] can play R&B, blues, country, reggae,” he says. “We’re just trying to be us and share that without trying to angle it towards anybody else. We’re trying to show what we love and what we do—and invite people to be a part of that.”
A Night on the Lānai
International Market Place’s Grand Lānai has all the ingredients for the perfect date night.
For locals, a lānai is where people gather— to talk story, eat, drink, laugh, listen to music, and connect with each other on balmy evenings. International Market Place’s Grand Lānai brings the friendly authenticity of island culture to a posh, open-air third-floor dining space that is at once elevated, yet uniquely Hawai‘i. When you dine on the Grand Lānai, you’ll find yourself in a state-of-the-art, contemporary urban oasis amid lush,
blooming tropical plants, near an iconic banyan tree over a century old that grows at the heart of International Market Place. The land itself once served as the summer home of Hawai‘i’s Queen Emma, wife of King Kamehameha IV and a great humanitarian, who leased it to tiki bar inventor Donn “The Beachcomber” Beach, founder of the first version of the International Market Place in the 1950s. Walk the Grand Lānai’s expansive
collection of eateries and history flows beneath your feet, evident all around you. The flavors here are sophisticated and cutting edge, driven by world-class chefs passionate about their craft. The dishes are globally inspired, yet also bring a sense of place to your table, enhanced by highquality local produce, fish, and meats. Are you ready for an evening of great food and drink? Right this way, please; your table is ready.

She’s a HIIT
Celebrity trainer and Fabletics HIIT
instructor Blasi Jacobi’s favorite International Market Place finds.
Blasi Jacobi began her fitness journey as a way to get in shape after the birth of her first son. After her first group exercise session, she immediately got hooked on the energy and camaraderie of the fitness community. Today, Jacobi is a celebrity fitness trainer and a personal and group instructor. For the past three years, Jacobi has brought her infectious spirit to International Market Place, leading Fabletics’ HIIT classes, which are free and open to the public. After each session, she unwinds by perusing International Market Place’s selection of stores. Below, find Jacobi’s favorite places to shop and dine.
For a healthy treat: Kona Coffee Purveyors
This is a place that knows what vegan is. When I asked how I could make my latte vegan, they knew exactly what I wanted. Plus, they have a delicious vegan chocolate cake!
For a self-care outing: Drybar
Perfect for a solo self-care day or a day out with the girls. I love the vibe of this place. Cocktails are optional, but are always delicious.
For fitness essentials: Fabletics Honestly, the cutest, most comfortable and most affordable workout attire. And the fact that they have a men’s line is a bonus!
For a quick HIIT workout, Jacobi recommends these three exercises that’ll get your heart pumping. Perform one movement for 30 seconds, resting for another 30 seconds before moving on to the next exercise. Do all three exercises to perform one circuit. Repeat each circuit three to five times, resting one minute between circuits.
Starting from a squat position, use your right foot to propel your body up and to the left. Land gently on the ball of your feet, then let your heels fall to the floor. Rest for a moment before doing the same motion towards the left. 2 3
1. Squat jumps
Start low in a squat position and jump up before landing gently on the balls of your feet.
2. Mountain climbers
From a plank position, drive your knees up towards your chest, making sure to keep your core engaged and your hips steady.
3. Lateral jumps

Can you tell us why you selected this organization?
This is an organization that is made up of graduates of my elementary/high school (The St. Augustine’s School) in my town in the Philippines, who are currently residing in the United States
and abroad. The goal is to provide scholarships to deserving children of families that are below poverty level. I helped organize the Alumni Association in 2007 and instituted a program called “Adopt a Student” two years ago with the intent of seeing a student through high school. The organization has helped hundreds of students, lots of them pursuing their dreams achieving success in their lives.

Mililani
How long have you lived there?
It’s my hometown and where I’ve lived most of my life.
