Message from the Vice Chancellor
"Dear CIU Community,
This year, we have engaged in thought-provoking conversations centered on enhancing our capacity to thrive as a collective. Together, we’ve explored what it truly means to create an environment where everyonestudents, faculty, and administrators—can excel.
But what does it mean to thrive? To thrive is to grow vigorously, to prosper, and to succeed in a particular environment. It implies vitality, resilience, and purpose—whether
for individuals, communities, or systems. The word itself carries rich historical roots, derived from the Old Norse þrífa, meaning “to grasp” or “to seize.” This origin underscores an active pursuit of opportunities and making the most of circumstances not just survival, but flourishing.
In Middle English, thrive evolved to signify prosperity and flourishing, particularly in the face of harsh or challenging conditions. It embodies growth, resilience, and holistic well-being, inviting us to create an environment where vitality and purpose take root and bloom. From these definitions, three essential elements of thriving stand out:
Growth: Moving beyond mere existence to achieve one’s potential.
Resilience: Overcoming obstacles and thriving despite challenges.
Holistic Well-being: Flourishing in multiple dimensions—physical, emotional, social, and intellectual. At CIU, the Thrive theme has guided us to reflect on what it means to live a meaningful and impactful life, both as individuals and as a community. It has also tied together several threads that are central to the life of our university.
First, our strategic plan, ending in 2025, prioritizes developing our students, staff, infrastructure, culture, and systems. This focus on growth ensures we continuously push boundaries and enhance our potential as a university.
Second, during the COVID-19 pandemic, resilience became one of our defining characteristics. The CIU community stepped up collectively, protecting the university and ensuring we continued to thrive. As I reflected in my closing message of 2022, our story during the pandemic was about finding ways to bounce forward. We redefined our workspace and committed to delivering a quality educational experience despite unprecedented challenges. We thrived.
Lastly, one of CIU’s core values is whole-person development. This value reflects our commitment to supporting individuals holistically—professionally, personally, and emotionally. We aim to empower each person to achieve their vision by investing in their mental, spiritual, and physical well-being, alongside academic and skill-related growth.
As I reflect on the importance of this theme, this year, I am encouraged by how it unifies the everyday work we do. Often, in the mundane hours of the day, we plant seeds of thriving—seeds that enable our community to grow and flourish.
As we close the year, I invite each of you to reflect on the ways you have thrived. How have you grown? How have you demonstrated resilience? How have you embraced holistic well-being? What are you most proud of and what is the best thing you have done to support learning and growth of our students? Let these reflections challenge us to make thriving a habit, a way of life.
We should not aim to thrive only for a season. Instead, let us settle into a rhythm where every action contributes to a cultivated environment in which everyone— students, faculty, and staff—can flourish academically, professionally, and personally. Together, we can create a university culture that continues to nurtures growth, fosters resilience, and inspires us all to seize opportunities for meaningful and impactful living.
May you all have joy this holiday season.
Warm regards,
Rose Clarke Nanyonga
Vice Chancellor

Empowering Uganda's future with Ms Jimbo Shanurah

In Kampala, Uganda, 19-year-old Jimbo Shanurah is emerging as a dedicated advocate for young women’s health and rights. As the 2024 National SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) Girl Champion, Jimbo plays a critical role in improving the lives of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) across the country. In partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s Girls Act program, Jimbo works tirelessly to promote girl child education, prevent teenage pregnancies, and reduce HIV infections among young women, ultimately striving to keep girls in school and empower them for a brighter future.
Jimbo’s advocacy extends beyond grassroots initiatives to some of Uganda’s highest decision making forums. They have boldly represented the voices of young women and girls at the Parliament of Uganda and in discussions with the Ministry of Health, addressing significant issues like the high cost of sanitary pads and barriers to education.
This November, Jimbo will present a national AGYW statement at an event organized by the Uganda AIDS Commission, highlighting the challenges young women face and emphasizing the importance of accessible, affordable healthcare for all.
Community engagement is at the heart of Jimbo’s work. They frequently organize initiatives to distribute sanitary pads to vulnerable girls and condoms in community spaces such as bars and local gathering spots. Through monthly dialogues, Jimbo educates and engages with local youth on essential topics like HIV, STIs, gender-based violence, and family planning.
These conversations provide safe spaces for young people to learn about their health and rights, empowering them to make informed choices and advocating for a more supportive community environment. Jimbo Shanurah’s commitment to Uganda’s young women and girls reflects a vision of progress and equality. By blending policy-level advocacy with handson community involvement, they are building a future where girls can pursue their dreams free from societal and health-related barriers. With children at risk of being struck by lightning and increasing school dropout rates, the project responded to an urgent need.
The Rotaract Club set up a two-classroom block at Sunset Junior School to shelter nursery students. In addition, the club donated desks, books, chalk, and other essential scholastic materials. This initiative has not only improved safety but also encouraged consistent attendance and created a nurturing space for young learners to thrive.

In partnership with the Rotary E-Club of Uganda Global, the Butiti Global Grant Project was a comprehensive initiative targeting Kyenjojo District’s Butiti community. The project aimed to enhance education, sanitation, water access, and environmental conservation.
Through this initiative, the Rotaract Club helped construct a classroom block and a toilet at Butiti Girls Primary School, providing
the students with improved learning and hygiene facilities. The project also extended its impact by setting up a pump water system to address the community’s water needs and planting trees to promote environmental sustainability. The skilling aspect of the project empowered community members with knowledge and tools to create lasting change.
3. The Beats n’ Sweat Project: Promoting Healthcare Through Fitness
The Beats n’ Sweat Project, a collaboration with the C-Care Foundation, combined fitness and philanthropy to extend healthcare services to last-mile communities. The initiative raised funds through engaging activities such as Zumba, rock climbing, cycling, dance fitness, and even bouncing castle sessions.

"1. What motivated you to choose Clarke International University for your studies?
Choosing Clarke International University (CIU) was not in my control, my brother worked at IHK and my parents had worked in Kiwooko it was a decision rooted in my family’s deep admiration for the institution’s owners’ commitment to healthcare excellence.
