After being treated to a rousing performance by the NMMU choir, guests were addressed by a panel on “Conscious Leadership”. Mbeki, who led the panel, spoke on how we live in a time which calls for global leadership that is “principled and reflected”. He was joined on the panel by Professor Ncedile Saule of NMMU’s Languages and Literature Department, Daniel Dube, First President of The National Union of Mineworkers, Dr Frank Chikane and Samantha Beynon, youth leader.

If you know me personally, you probably know I’m a sentimental soul. So, naturally, my last editorial as Editor of NMMYou is going to get kind of soppy. Sorry in advance – I promise the rest of the paper will have a bit more sparkle! Here it goes. Today was the culmination of my three years as an undergrad student. Leaving the Sports Centre after my final exam with a sense of elation I last knew at my matric valedictory, I thought to myself, “You did it, Nicole!” Soon after, I went to the petrol station to fill up my car. If you know me personally, then I’m sure you’ll also know I have a tendency to wear my heart on my sleeve. Combine that with my incessant desire to make small talk with strangers, and you won’t be surprised to hear that I ended up telling the petrol attendant, Shepherd, all about my exam, about the fact that I was now qualified with a degree in media and how utterly over the moon I was about it. He listened and smiled as I spoke, and then he told me his story. A now middle-aged man, Shepard studied journalism in his home country, Zimbabwe. He worked there as a journalist too, but after the political situation there forced him to move to South Africa, he was unable to find work doing what he loved. “Whatever I can do to put food on the table” he said to me as he returned the hose from my car to the petrol pump. Ok, here comes the soppy stuff, people – brace yourselves! I don’t believe in chance. I think that every moment is handed to you for some sort of reason – usually to teach or remind you something. I am so grateful I met Shepard today, and as I drove away from the petrol station I realised why I did. He reminded me what a blessing it is to have a degree to my name and the world at my feet. We students (and fellow graduates – woohoo!) still have a long path to follow before we reach our life’s goals. But unlike so many, we are well equipped for the journey. One more thing – then I promise to wrap it up with the mushiness! I feel this wouldn’t be complete without using this platform to say a very heartfelt thank you to this year’s NMMYou Team, my ever-so-supportive, sunshiny friends and family and, of course, our readers. I get so much joy when somebody tells me they read and enjoy the paper – your support is unfathomably appreciated. Now go soak up some sunlight, enjoy every moment of your holiday (and every page of our Summer Holiday Edition) and take care. It’s been real, NMMU! All the best,
Nicole Downing

By Casey Roche On 31 October, three of NMMU’s most giving students attended a prestigious awards ceremony for the Herald GM Youth Citizen of the Year prize giving. The three students, Sinovuyo Ndindwa, a Bcom accounting student, Ryan Karshagen, a BA English and History student and Amandla Didiza, a BA Law student were amongst the 5 finalists in the running for the award. In an exciting ceremony, two of the students came in

the top 3; Karshagen and Didiza coming second and third respectively. Didiza was nominated for his charity work which includes his drive to advancing education in the Eastern Cape after he was appointed as Global Youth Ambassador for A World at School in May last year. Karshagen was nominated for his charity work including work for the Reach for a Dream foundation. “This is only the beginning and I hope to continue creating change wherever I go,” Karshagen
said on being named in the top 3. The award, which was brought into the youth category for the first time this year, is aimed at recognising individuals who have gone far beyond the extra mile in service to others and their communities. The winner of the youth category was Nadia Mila, a Victoria Park High School matriculant, who runs the Little Stuart Play School in her backyard in the Walmer Township. The winner of
the open category was Zodwa Dube, who is part of a programme which aims to increase the number of black stem-cell donors. It is a great achievement for NMMU’s very own students to have been nominated and chosen to be in the top 5 and top 3 of such a prestigious award.

Art Students print success

By Arantxa Mathapersadh NMMU’s second year Fine Art students organised and hosted a printmaking sale to help raise funds for the art school’s materials. The event was held at NMMU’s Art School on North Campus on Friday, 30 October 2015. Despite the event having been postponed due to the student protests earlier that month, the event proved to be an overall success for NMMU art students. The sale showcased the work that second year Fine Art students had accumulated during their printmaking and illustration module earlier this year. Kylie van der Merwe, second

year Fine Art student who helped bring the event to life, said that the overall event was successful. A l t h o u g h unable to provide an estimate of the funds raised from the event, she said enthusiastically, “There was a huge turnout and plenty of the prints were sold”. She continued by saying that the sale had exceeded their original goals.
There was a huge turnout and plenty of the prints were sold This event was also beneficial to students as it allowed them to understand the process of as well as gain experience in properly executing a sale. Each student sold at least two artworks. It also provided them
with exposure to the manner in which things operate in the art world and allowed them to raise funds that will go towards the materials provided by the Art School for such modules. However, the printmaking sale is just one of the events that Art students have been involved in. “There are constantly exhibitions happening around the city [that feature the work of students]… and these artworks can be seen at independent galleries such as ArtEC, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum (NMMAM), etc.,” van Der Merwe explained.

By Arantxa Mathapersadh The 2015 NMMU Alumni Awards was hosted on the evening of 30 October 2015 in the NMMU Indoor Sports Centre. The awards aimed to “recognise alumni who have gone the distance and beyond in their various fields, to the benefit of the society at local, provincial, national and international level”, as stated on the awards programme. The awards gathered quite a number of nominations in the respective categories with 11 recipients on the evening. Geswindt, kept guests in stiches with genius humour, reminding alumni of how their homecoming to NMMU saw most of them getting lost on the campus as it had many new developments. Congratulating the recipients was the Deputy Vice chancellor, Prof Denise Zinn. Guests of note and recipients of awards included Nicholas Graham, Head Coach to two international cricket teams and Michelle Brown, a name synonymous with public relations throughout South Africa. The evening also allowed for the engagement with the
youth as former chairpersons of the alumni society and student assistants read out the citations to honour the recipients. Entertainment was provided by Two Tone Music group also as a gesture of incorporating the youth into the event. True humility was a running theme with each recipient, shown in their surprise upon receiving their awards. Rising star award recipient, Prof Lennox Ruxwana, who obtained his PHD in Information Technology at the mere age of 26, echoed the message of trying to inspire the youth to achieve academic
excellence at a young age and to “drop the beer and hold the qualifications”. Throughout the acceptance speeches, each recipient showed a strong sense of solidarity for the #FeesMustFall movement, each removing the attention from themselves and focusing on the predicament the youth of SA finds itself in. When Conviction does not match the willingness to change this country, then Society degrades”, alumnus, Gugu Nxiweni, said of the #FeesMustFall movement, urging all in attendance to contribute positively.

FEATURES
Party Hard and Stay Alert By Yonga Jizana Festivals, summer picnics, exclusive events, braai evenings – always something to keep you going throughout this festive season. Whether you’re going home to be reunited with old friends, or staying here in your home town of PE, it's going to be a ‘turnup’ just like every other December season. But as much as this is silly season, the silliness should take a halt when it gets to your safety. Before leaving the house, check that you have the essentials: Take your own cash, and make sure you have enough for a cab, even though you may already have a lift. Have at least one contact number with you if you’re not taking your cellphone with you (which is sometimes advisable to avoid having it stolen). Always take your ID or driver’s license with you – it’s important that you are identifiable in case of an emergency. Gatherings such as picnic parties, festivals and exclusive events increase your chances of losing your friends temporarily because of how large the crowds are. The term “safety in numbers” beats “every man for himself” always. Be it a trip to the bar or to the bathroom, take at least one friend with you to avoid being lost or left behind. If you’re not

the friend that separates from the group, but have a friend who wanders off after a couple of drinks, the best thing to do is to follow them. Telling them they can’t go off on their own will just provoke them to do so. Remember, never do something that you are uncomfortable with, for example heading to another party of venue when you’d rather go home. There is a reason for your discomfort, and you should follow your instincts. The money that you brought with you will now come in handy. Drunk driving is obviously punishable by law, and although you would like to risk
it, traffic officers are on high alert during the festive season. While you may be driving on your own, thinking that you won’t be endangering any passenger’s lives, don’t forget that there are fellow drivers on the road. In many cases, a drunk driver is likely to survive an accident, whereas other passengers or road users may be left severely injured or deceased. Even as a sober driver, always stay alert of drunk drivers on the road. Be timeous with your driving, and proceed with caution when approaching an intersection (even if your robot is green), a turn or a bend. Also stay cautious with
doing lane changes, especially on the highway. A surprising fact is that accidents are most likely to happen when a driver is sleepy, rather than drunk. If you feel like you need to catch some shut eye while on the road, stop over at a well lit, busy petrol station and take a brief nap in your car. The same applies when driving long distance. Arrive Alive suggests taking a break every 2 hours to take a brief walk, and rehydrating helps decrease fatigue on the road. Use your intuition at all times, have a good time and stay safe, and do it all over again in 2016!

SEA OF PINK By Dana Hyde The AlgoaFM Big Walk for Cancer took place on 31 October. A fun-filled 5km with a strong message and “pink” purpose was thoroughly enjoyed by many. The words “who are you walking for?”, was seen on the t-shirts of young and old, indicating that the fight against cancer is one that affects all – regardless of age, colour or creed. The event was in aid of the Igazi Foundation, South Africa’s only Haematological Services NGO. With cancer, especially blood-related

Pink t-shirts, pink balloons and even pink hair was seen everywhere. The scenic route along the beachfront was emphasized by a day of beautiful weather and great preparation, with all necessary water points and helpers along the route. Upon reaching the finish line, each participant was handed a refreshing drink and the festivities commenced. The Big Walk was a big success. The morning was

SUN’S OUT, F
Summer Skincare By Dana Hyde
01 Sunscreen Sunscreen should be a staple when it comes to hot summer days. Preferably, buy a product that is water resistant and, depending on your skin sensitivity, an SPF that will adequately protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. My favourite find was the Nivea moisturising sun spray (R149.00 for 200ml, from Clicks) and its after-sun moisture companion (R63.00 from Clicks).
02 moisturizer Getting your tan on may result in very dry skin – something nobody wants! My best-buy body cream is the Nivea Rich Nourishing Body Moisturizer for dry skin (R28.95 for 250ml from Clicks). With almond oil, this product is thick with goodness. Bio-Oil (R83.95 for 125ml from Clicks) is also a great product for any cosmetic cupboard! It has many uses, one of which is an intensively moisturizing after-sun treatment. A small bottle goes a long way!
03 Face masks A face mask is the perfect summer treat to keep your skin looking refreshed and photo-ready. Clicks – my one stop shop for affordable beauty products – has a delightful range, with options such as ‘chocolate mud mask’, ‘sea mineral face mask’, and ‘exfoliating apricot scrub mask’. At the low price of R27.95 it’s affordable too. So gather up the ladies for an at home spa day – cucumbers and all… The perfect way to start any holiday.

FUN’S OUT:
e Tips and Treats 04 Summer hats Floppy summer straw hats are not only fashionsavvy, but they are a must have for any time spent in the sun – particularly those lazy beach days. These hats protect the face and shoulders which are generally most vulnerable in the harsh noonday sun. Mr Price has a lovely range in black and white (prices ranging between R69.00 to R79.00) – with plenty of stock still being unpacked.
05 hand cream Never forget the hands! The Oh So Heavenly range always satisfies my fingertips. Happy Hands ‘soft touch’ 24 hour moisture hand and nail cream (R21.95 for 75ml from Clicks) is a great stocking-filler. It smells delicious and moisturizes like a pro.
06 coconut water Skin care often begins within. Remember to drink lots of water and keep hydrated this season. If you’re looking for something tastier, however, try Aloe Vera water (approximately R20.00), which can be bought from DisChem. The Aloe brand, with added strawberry bits, is especially nice. DisChem also stocks the brand pictured below. Aloe is often accredited with magical properties – so this is a definite when trying to quench that summer thirst.

FESTIVE SEASON ON A BUDGET By Sithisa Magxwalisa We all know that the festive season is the most extravagant and excessive time of year, from binge shopping for gifts & selfindulgent spoils to blowing your budget (or lack thereof) on that News Years jol. The best way to keep your head on straight this festive
season is planning ahead, setting up a budget and sticking to it. In addition, it’s always good to save wherever you can, so when you do go shopping, whether for selfindulgent binging or Christmas gift shopping, look out for sales, good deals and value for money. Finally, always
try to save yourself from overspending and cut costs where you can by avoiding the purchase of unnecessary things. Try DIY gift wrapping and hand-made gifts. They often hold more sentimental value to loved ones because you simply took the time to make something, while

DIY gifts for family and friends e.g. stationary or pen holders to decorate a friend’s desk at work or personalized coffee mugs – something that’ll remind them of you daily. Sentimentality goes a long way. A DIY gift made at home with love will save you from the disastrously long queues at the shops during the festive season, as well as saving your pocket. DIY personalized coffee mugs you can decorate and personalize at home with special text, unique about your loved one.

Here are some cool tips and awesome ideas on ways to save this festive season:
Recycle your gift wrapping. Reuse old gift bags and wrapping paper, or use brown bookcovering paper or newspaper (be creative!). Next gifts you receive, don’t tear and crinkle up the wrapping paper in your excitement, it could save you so much for the next festive season. Thank me later!

Go the “queen of cheap” route and buy in bulk e.g. a bulk pack of boxed chocolates to fill up the Christmas stockings or a little something for everyone at Christmas dinner. Makro is the place to go for bulk packaged Christmas candy and other goodies.

4 Summer tech gadgets By Brendan Smit With the summer holidays here, we have a lot more free time to do the things we enjoy most, but how awesome would it be if we had a few great gadgets to make things even more fun? This is why I decided to come up with a list of my top four tech gadgets that can make summer even better. And while most of these cost an arm and a leg… #studentproblems… at least we can spend our holidays dreaming about them!
IPHONE 6s I’ll be the first to say that although they have a few cool products, I’m not a big fan of Apple (mainly because of the hefty price tag and lack of great after sale service in South Africa). That being said, their flagship device the iPhone 6s is an amazing piece of tech that has really hit the ball out of the park specifically with the cameras. I won’t bore you with all the specs, but what I will say is 4K video recording. For those of you that don’t get it, picture recording in HD, now 4K has four times the definition of HD, so you’ll be able to capture every moment in beautiful crisp video. The front facing camera of 5 megapixels will make your selfies look amazing, and the primary camera of 12 megapixels will be able to take stunning images of whatever you feel like taking a picture of. the jetavator Ever wanted to fly using a jetpack? Well now’s your chance to finally do so, well sort of. The Jetovator works much like a jetpack; it uses to pressurised streams of water to lift the user a couple of meters into the air. The only catch is that you need a large body of water, and the Jetovator needs to be connected to a jetski in order for it to get the pressurised water. Madibaz Aquatics Club Challenge By Brittany Straton
Image sourced from swimming.nmmu.ac.za
On 18 October the NMMU Aquatics department hosted an Aquatics challenge for the different water sports offered at NMMU. This challenge saw a team representing each club participate in a challenge in each of the sports. The first event took place at the Redhouse River, where the NMMU Rowing Club trains. The athletes were taught the rowing basics and then raced a short 200 metre sprint. It was an entertaining race and saw a few boats tipping. The nonrowing boat to win was the underwater hockey double. Next was the surfing event. Each club made a team of four and had 45 minutes to catch

two waves per participant. Each club gave it their all and everyone managed to catch their two waves. The nonsurfing team to win was, again, the underwater hockey team. The clubs then moved to NMMU where the swim event took place. One person from each club had to participate in one of the four events; freestyle, breast stroke, butterfly and a fun event. The swimming team consisting of Edward Johanissen, Alaric and Alard Basson, who had just recently participated in the All African Games in the Congo, smashed all the events. The underwater hockey team managed to claim first out of all the none-swimmer teams.
The next event was water polo, a challenge which saw each club play a series of short matches. Many of the players from the different teams noted how tough water polo was and the non-water polo team to win this challenge was the surfing club. The last challenge was the underwater hockey game. This saw the teams play a series of short matches. This proved to be one of the more difficult challenges, especially for the rowers who forfeited the rest of their matches after one game. “Rowers are definitely not good at any other sport, other than rowing,” rower, Jessica Saayman said with a laugh. The non-underwater hockey winner of this tough challenge
was the water polo girls. The overall winners of the Aquatics Challenge was a tie between the underwater hockey and surfing teams, with water polo coming second, swimming coming third and the rowers coming last. This was a fun filled day and gave each club a taste of the different aquatic sports offered and provided a means for bonding between the different clubs. The clubs are looking forward to next year’s NMMU Aquatics Challenge.

NMMU’s 5 of The Best By Tebuho Zongwana While Madibaz sports have seen teams in previous years perform better, 2015 has still seen our sportsmen and women persevere. NMMYou Sports team have drawn up a list of 10 of the best sports teams and clubs for 2015. The rankings are based on domestic and national success. Here are NMMU’s 10 of the Best.
MADIBAZ FOOTBALL
MADIBAZ CRICKET
After winning the Port Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) league, the Madibaz could only salvage one win and two draws in seven games in their Varsity Soccer Campaign.
The most consistent sports club at NMMU earns 5th spot after a 3rd place finish at USSA, 6th place in the Varsity Sports and a national ranking of number two.
SPAR MADIBAZ NETBALL
MADIBAZ SEVENS
The first place in our top 3 goes to the netball team. After just missing out on a play-off spot in the Varsity Netball, the young Spar Madibaz squad also had a good USSA run which saw them beat the likes of UJ
A sixth place finish in the Varsity Sevens and a win in the Bowl final saw the Madibaz sevens become the only team to claim silverware for NMMU this year. Good enough to make second place in our list.
MADIBAZ YOUNG GUNZ The NMMU u20’s went all the way to the semi-final in this year’s Varsity Cup competition, the furthest NMMU young guns have ever gone. Their fate was to lose to eventual winners the University of Pretoria (Tuks). The team’s run saw them lose only one game in their campaign, their second loss coming in the semi-final against Tuks.
