Poll the Sailor Parrot
Poll was a parrot as sweet as can be, She hung upside down in a tall jungle tree One day as she perched on a branch eating flies Our colourful friend had a nasty surprise
Poll shrieked and squeaked and flipped and flapped But a man popped her into a cage –Poll was trapped!
He carried her down to a ship on the seaThe name on the back said Trincomalee Poll was scared and looked all around She had never before been this close to the ground!
But the next thing she saw was a kind, gentle face Poll thought that it might not be such a bad place The lady, Eliza, was thrilled to see Poll ‘Oh you will be such a good friend for us all!’
Eliza’s little boy John and Charlotte her daughter Held on to Poll’s cage as they sailed out on the water The journey ahead of the family was long But Poll made them smile with her twittering song
Soon the storms came and loud thunder rumbled All over the deck the crew tripped, slipped and stumbled The soup spilt in their cabin, Charlotte fell from her bed Little John wailed as a pot hit his head
The poor children cried and Eliza was worried Backward and forward the brave sailors scurried The rain poured down and the wind blew with rage The storm was so bad it knocked over Poll’s cage!
The cage was destroyed and Poll fluttered in fright Eliza rescued the parrot and held the bird tight One day when the ship was rolling and rocking Poll fell into a tub of cold water-how shocking!
But the days and nights passed, the storm settled down And soon they saw Portsmouth- a fine looking town The family moved to their new home with glee Where sailor parrot Poll hung upside down in a tree!
