2 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Letter from Leadership Dear Friends, We are very pleased to share that 2014 was an outstanding year for the Colorado-Wyoming Chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, marked by record- breaking fundraising and event participation. This success, combined with diligent financial stewardship, allowed us to make the largest contribution to Society research in our Chapter’s history - $1.7 million - which drives advancements that will stop MS, restore lost function and end MS forever. The Chapter delivered a wide range of quality services to help enhance the lives of more than 100,000 people affected by MS throughout our twostate Chapter. Educational classes, support groups, one-to-one care management and access to 24/7 information and referral services helped people thrive every day. Additionally, we continued to integrate the use of technology, expanding access to many resources and experts. We are inspired by the research that continued to yield more treatments for relapsing MS and remain steadfast in our support of expanding knowledge and accelerating efforts that that will address progressive MS. We remain resolute and are well

4 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
We are a driving force of MS research & treatment to stop disease progression, restore function, and end ms forever. New Therapy Approved for Relapsing MS In November 2014 the FDA approved Lemtrada, the 12th disease-modifying therapy for people with relapsing forms of MS. Many more potential therapies are in later stages of research and development.
Largest Contribution Ever – $1.7 Million for Society Research The Chapter contributed $1.7 million to support the Society’s 380 research projects worldwide. Colorado is home to eight of these promising research projects. The Society is recognized as the catalyst that has
to share knowledge, speed development of treatments to manage symptoms, globalize MS funding, and end progressive MS. In 2014 the Alliance awarded its first round of research grants, funding 22 projects, and will invest $30 million to tackle progressive MS over the next six years. The National MS Society contributed $15 million to this endeavor and leveraged an additional $15 million in support from the global community.

Global Targeting of Progressive MS The Society is one of 11 MS organizations worldwide that formed the International Progressive MS Alliance. The Alliance connects resources and experts from around the world
started in 1946 there were no therapies proven to slow the course of MS. Things have changed. Decades of research into MS and the basic workings of the immune and nervous system have built a critical platform of knowledge now serving as a springboard for progress.

IGNITING SUPPORT AND SETTING RECORDS
6 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Together we are moving toward a world free of ms. Bike MS Colorado Sets Another Fundraising Record – $4 Million! The Chapter’s Newmont Bike MS, presented by Point B made fundraising history again, breaking last year’s record by surpassing the $4 million mark. This remarkable feat was achieved during the 29th annual ride, which holds another distinction - being the Society’s third largest fundraising Bike MS ride in the nation. In the past three years alone Bike MS Colorado has raised more than $10 million.
Bike MS Wyoming – Rides to a Milestone Fielding more than 200 cyclists, Bike MS Wyoming participants followed a course dotted with historic towns and a national monument as they rode to a fundraising record of $265,000.
Walk MS Denver Raises $1 Million – Again! More than 10,000 walkers stepped out at Denver City Park in May to take part in the Society’s largest Walk MS event in the nation. For the second year in a row, these energized walkers raised $1 million. In total, the Chapter’s 13 Walk MS events raised more than $1.8 million.
Advocates – Voices for the MS Community The Chapter has 3,000 MS Activists, who readily act when needed to ensure issues impacting people living with MS are addressed. In March, advocates from the Chapter attended the National MS Society’s Public Policy Conference in Washington D.C., where additional funding support was requested - and
received - for the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program for MS research.
Volunteers – Energetic Support More than 1,500 volunteers generously donated 24,000 hours of service to support the full range of Chapter activities and services, including 19 major events, community awareness efforts, support groups and administrative activities. These gifts of time and manpower allow the Chapter to direct more funds to programs and research.
Partner Recognition HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Colorado Springs was recognized as a Partner in MS Care. To receive this National MS Society designation a health care provider must meet a rigorous set of standards and provide multidisciplinary, comprehensive MS care to address the oftencomplex needs of people living with MS. The organization must also demonstrate knowledge of and experience with MS, have a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of people living with MS and maintain a close collaboration with the Chapter. ®

Financial Stewardship Every gift received by the Chapter is used to its fullest potential. Through strong fiscal leadership, the Chapter spent only .13 cents to raise a dollar versus the industry standard of .20 cents, allowing more funds to be directed to programs and research. The Chapter seized opportunities to leverage funds to drive greater impact by seeking monetary and in-kind gifts from businesses and grants to augment services. At ‘do it yourself’ fundraising events, community members also leveraged gifts, expanding awareness and our universe of supporters.

Leveraging for Greater Impact In 2012 the Rim Golf Club and Chaparral Pines initiated a golf tournament to honor local community member Shelby Yastrow for his service to the golf courses and residential communities in Payson, Arizona. Instead of gifts, Shelby and his wife Sybil asked that donations be made to the National MS Society as a way to help their son Phil who had been diagnosed with MS in 2005. The Shelby Day tournament was a local hit and exceeded all fundraising expectations.

In 2014 the Yastrow’s took a different approach – they decided to match every dollar raised at the annual event. Inspired by the incentive, the tournament host added contests, such as Mulligans for MS, and golfers rallied raising $11,000. Through this leveraging, the Yastrow’s increased the amount of their gift by 100 percent and raised $23,000, expanding local connections and community support!

WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the central nervous system by disrupting the flow of information from the brain to the body. It is an elusive disease with no known cause and no known cure. Symptoms vary from person to person depending on where the central nervous system is affected.
MS FACTS
• More than 2.3 million people are living with MS worldwide • 14,000 people are living with MS in Colorado and Wyoming • Most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages of 20 and 50 • At least two to three times more women than men are diagnosed with MS • MS is the most common neurological disease leading to disability in young adults
