FUELING IMPACT WE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT MS NOW.

ANNUAL 2 ANNUALREPORT REPORT 2015 2015 2

LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, The Colorado-Wyoming Chapter of the National MS Society experienced another noteworthy year and remained strong as we continued to expand our base of support and elevate awareness of MS. Throughout the year we held 20 impressive fundraising events that generated the vital financial support needed to accelerate research progress and provide resources that connect people to the solutions they need to live their best lives. We are pleased to share that our Bike MS rides raised $3.8 million and congratulate Left Hand Brewery’s Bike MS team, which surpassed $1 million in cumulative fundraising during the 2015 Bike MS Colorado ride. They join an elite group of six teams that have achieved this fundraising milestone. Additionally, participation at our popular MuckFest MS increased and Hike MS Keystone experienced a record year for both attendance and fundraising. The year was not without its challenges as a cold, wet and sometimes even snowy spring throughout our region affected attendance at many of our Walk MS events. However, the giving spirit of supporters was not dampened and collectively our Walk MS events raised $1.6 million. In December the Society closed its successful $250 million NOW campaign, its largest-ever research drive dedicated to stopping MS, restoring function lost and finding solutions to end MS forever. Tremendous progress has been made through research investments. These research breakthroughs include: the MS treatment pipeline has significantly expanded; the promise of myelin repair is now reality and our understanding of the causes of MS have advanced.

The successes and achievements reflected in this report - and the impacts they generate to support our MS community - could not have been achieved without our committed base of generous supporters, sponsors, partners and volunteers, and the leadership of our board trustees and staff. By connecting and working together, our efforts are changing lives daily as we advance toward our common goal of a world free of MS. We look toward 2016 with confidence and optimism about the future because of the synergy we share. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” Our strength grows when supporters share experiences, knowledge and ideas to make an even greater impact. Know that we welcome your thoughts and are always ready to listen. Together we are stronger. Together, we are changing the world for everyone affected by MS.

An Eye on the Future – Strategic Planning The Society’s 2016 – 2018 strategic plan establishes a roadmap that is guided by its vision and restated mission. Multiple strategies have been set to accomplish three priority goals: •

People must have effective treatment choices and solutions to the challenges of living with MS

People affected by MS connect to the individuals, information and resources they need to move their lives forward

Individuals and organizations are mobilized to

An Unprecedented Global Effort More than 2.3 million people worldwide currently live with MS and more than 1 million people live with a progressive form of the disease. In 2012 the global MS community came together to establish the Progressive MS Alliance, a global initiative to galvanize the world in finding solutions for progressive MS specifically. Participating MS organizations located in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, and the MS International Federation, form this unprecedented global effort to overcome barriers to developing solutions to this form of the disease, gain new understanding and accelerate a path to new treatments for people living with progressive MS. Growth of global research funding for progressive MS continues to expand through the work of the Alliance. There are 22 research projects underway, including investigations on “biomarkers” that may forecast disease progression; a potential relationship between the loss of myelin and changes to mitochondria, which may identify ways to protect the nerve fibers and their mitochondria in people with progressive MS; and identifying effective rehabilitative programs.

ACHIEVEMENTS UNITING TO MAKE AN IMPACT

UNITING TO MAKE AN IMPACT Bike MS Pedals to $3.8 Million Bike MS raised $3.8 million as more than 3,000 cyclists participated in the annual Colorado and Wyoming cycling adventures. The Chapter recruited 27 new corporate teams to fuel continued support and Bike MS Colorado, presented by Point B, remained the Society’s third largest revenue-generating ride.

KUDOS Left Hand Brewery’s Bike MS team surpassed the $1 million in cumulative fundraising in just eight years. Team Left Hand joins an elite group that have reached this extraordinary milestone, including corporate teams Stay Fit at Hyatt, Homebuyer’s Warranty and Great-West Life, and friends and family teams the Sugar Bees and the Raw Hinies. Left Hand Brewery was also honored as the 2015 Outstanding Small Business by National Philanthropy Day Colorado.

Record Year!

Hike MS Elevates Funds and Attendance Hike MS Keystone set attendance and fundraising records as more than 450 hikers enjoyed spectacular views along routes varying from two – 10 miles in Colorado’s pristine high country. By days end, over $130,000 was raised!

Chris Lennert, Team Captain, Left Hand Brewery

Walk MS Keeps Up the Pace The Chapter’s 13 Walk MS events raised $1.6 million, which included a first-time walk located in Southwest Wyoming. More than 10,000 staunch supporters came out for Walk MS Denver, the National MS Society’s most highly attended Walk MS event. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT 5

FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP EVERY GIFT RECEIVED BY THE CHAPTER IS USED TO ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL. Through strong fiscal leadership, the Chapter spent only .14 cents to raise a dollar versus the industry standard of .20 cents, allowing more funds to be directed to programs and research. The Chapter seized opportunities to leverage funds to drive greater impact by seeking monetary and in-kind gifts from businesses and grants to augment services. At ‘do it yourself’ fundraising events, community members also leveraged gifts, expanding awareness and our universe of supporters.

The Power of Partnerships

2015

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES Partnerships are essential to leveraging resources that help people with MS enhance their quality of life. Gary Stanley knows this from firsthand experience. Gary has lived with MS 24 years and was no longer able to move around his multi-level home without help. Knowing a stair glide would greatly enhance his independence and mobility, he called the Chapter to see if assistance was available. The Chapter reached out to one of its partners, the Home Builders Foundation (HBF), regarding this home modification. Thanks to support from the Chapter’s Independent Spirit Fund, the HBF and its partners, the Denver Metro Fair Housing Center and the Pinehurst Sanger Foundation, the HBF and Accessible Systems were able to provide and install the $12,500 custom stair glide at no cost to Gray. “This is so helpful.” Said Gary. “ I can go up the steps whenever I want to, instead of just once or twice a day without waiting for someone help me all of the time. I truly appreciate it.” “We have so many ways to help people. There is power in partnerships and people are just a call away from a vast network of support,” said Lee Ann Bellum, Chapter care management director. Beth Forbes, executive director of HBF, agrees. “The HBF is grateful for the long-standing partnership with National MS Society. Together, we are changing lives.”

WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. It is an elusive disease with no known cause and no known cure. Symptoms vary from person to person depending on where the central nervous system is affected.

MS FACTS

• More than 2.3 million people are living with MS worldwide • 14,000 people are living with MS in Colorado and Wyoming • Most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages of 20 and 50 • At least two to three times more women than men are diagnosed with MS • MS is the most common neurological disease leading to disability in young adults
