We are people who want to do something about ms now Abo u t MS /// Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.5 million worldwide.
Abo u t t he Nat ional MS Socie t y /// The National MS Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. Learn about your options by talking to your health care professional and contacting the National MS Society at nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-344-4867.

It’s time to continue our shared journey biking to create a world free of MS. It’s time to keep raising funds to make a difference for people with MS who need our help. T he ba si c s of r id ing in a g ro u p Group riding takes practice. Riding with other cyclists all around you may cause you to feel trapped. Relax. It is most important to create your own safety zone. This may vary depending on the speed and ability level of the people you are with, so be flexible. Let others know of your anxiety — they may also be new at this. H y d r at i on Knowing how to optimize your fluid intake is critical to successfully completing a Bike MS Ride. ∫ O n e b ott l e per h o u r
The rule of thumb is to consume a bottle of liquid every hour, and that every second bottle is a sports drink. Also, remember to eat small snacks frequently during the ride. If you find that you experience extreme fatigue, the inability to recover your energy, or frequent muscle cramps, seek assistance from first aid — you may have the early signs of dehydration.
∫ S eek i n g m ed i c a l a ss i s ta n c e
If you find that you experience bloating with progressive symptoms such as swollen hands and feet, confusion, throbbing headache, dizziness or nausea, please seek assistance from first aid.

Hel me t Sm ar t Head injuries are of special concern for cyclists. Even falling at a slow rate of speed can cause a serious head injury. Helmets must be on your head and strapped while riding in Bike MS — no exceptions. Hel pfu l T i ps On Bike MS Rides, our active route support team works to make the ride safe. Here are a few additional suggestions to help keep everyone safe on the ride: ∫ T h u m bs d ow n f o r h el p
SAG vehicles and motorcycle escorts will stop for you if you are off the road, off your bike, and giving a “thumbs down” sign or holding your helmet in the air. ∫ R i d e M a r s h a l s u pp o r t
A special team of cyclists called Ride Marshals provide support on the rides. They offer minor mechanical help along the route and monitor cycling safety and etiquette. ∫ breakpoint etiquette
All cyclists who enter a breakpoint must pull over, dismount and move completely away from the road and breakpoint entrance. When exiting, move beyond the breakpoint and proceed with caution on the right side of the road before merging with faster cyclists. ∫ Pa ss i n g
Passing others and being passed occurs continuously during the ride. Call out “passing on your left” and allow time for the cyclist being overtaken to move to the right — then pass safely.
∫ M ec h a n i c a l pr o b l ems
Examine mechanical problems and change flats completely off the road. If you have a problem you cannot fix yourself, flag down a SAG van and seek a mechanic at the next breakpoint. ∫ B e co u r t e o u s
Bike MS participants are fortunate to ride on many public roads. Be courteous and use no more than half the route.

kn ow wh o is on t he ro u t e to help yo u Bike Police
Bike MS Bike Police are law enforcement officers who volunteer their time for the safety of riders and volunteers and can be identified by their white blue jerseys with POLICE written on it. They have the responsibility to ensure riders obey traffic laws and rules governing the ride, as well as assisting in emergencies. Bike Police will take whatever action is necessary to maintain the safety of others, including motor vehicles on the route. Police can warn and, if necessary, remove any unsafe or uncooperative riders from the route, as well as issue tickets in accordance to the law. HAM R a d i o T e a m
The HAM Amateur Radio Communications Team links the Bike MS: Valero with radio and cellular communication support and operations. Team members at Central Radio Network Control and in event vehicles provide the ride’s information backbone. M ed i c a l S u pp o r t
Trained, professional medical personnel are available throughout the route to help all participants. If you need help, do not hesitate to ask. All breakpoints, start and finish lines, and overnight location will have first aid stations. M oto r c yc l e S u pp o r t
Motorcyclists who patrol the route are integral to ride control. Motorcycle support volunteers respond to emergencies and traffic situations. They also check the well-being of riders. They are not authorized to direct traffic. Ride Marshals
Ride marshals are registered riders that offer assistance along the route and monitor cycling safety. Ride marshals are also on-hand to help novice cyclists. They are not authorized to stop or direct traffic. S u pp o r t a n d G e a r (SAG)
Support and Gear (SAG) vehicles provide transportation to riders who need a lift to the next breakpoint – be it equipment or rider mechanics prompting the lift. SAGs do not stop to make bike repairs, rather they transport a rider forward along the route. So, if you have a mechanical issue on the route, a SAG will transport you to the next breakpoint where you can visit one of the official Bike Shops. To signal a SAG vehicle driver, move safely off the road and well out of the path of other riders, dismount and stand near your bike, and remove your helmet and give a “thumbs down” signal. R o u t e H el p L i n e Ph o n e N u m b er
For medical emergencies, call 911. If you encounter a problem while on the route, call the National MS Society, Bike MS: Valero 2010 Alamo Ride to the River Help Line at 210-216-9318.
