Who we are

You may not be aware, but we are the biggest TAFE college in the state and we are very proud of the fact that we were recognised in 2018 as the WA Large Training Provider of the Year. All our hard work to provide the best possible training also meant we were one of the top three TAFEs in Australia. How big are we? We have ten contemporary campuses across the north metropolitan area with millions of dollars in facilities and equipment – you get real-world, hands-on training in simulated environments to guarantee top notch skills and knowledge in your chosen area. But by far our biggest asset is our people. Our lecturers are connected to industry because they come from industry, making them experts in their field. And because they talk to employers constantly, we know what skills employers require for the jobs that are in high demand. This means you get training that is current, relevant, and demanded by industry, giving you a competitive edge. Wanting to further your study? We have all bases covered as we have partnerships with local and national universities to provide you with the best options on entry pathways and advanced standing. Our people also support you in as many ways as possible, whether academically or with your personal development. Need advice on career direction, training options or simply how to become the best version of you? Well, we’re also home to Jobs and Skills Centres in Joondalup, Balga and Perth (Northbridge). But that’s enough about us; we just like getting on with the job of transforming lives, strengthening industry and communities.

Won the WA Large Training Provider of the Year Award and achieved a record number of student/staff finalists across all categories.

Who you are School leaver

Returning to work

“To see the gold medal at the end of it was very rewarding, a very proud moment.”

“I’ve found a career that can definitely take me through for years to come.”

With a passion for cooking in high school, Harrison Joyce started a school-based apprenticeship at Joondalup Resort. Harrison has achieved a gold medal in the Apprentice of the Year competition and is travelling to Germany this year to compete in the Culinary Olympics.

Marta Chin had been a stay at home mum for several years and always had a dream to go back and study. She achieved a brand new skill and confidence within herself to go out into the workforce and start a new career in phlebotomy.

“The lecturers are always there to help, they help us with stuff that we want to do and they help us to set goals and try to achieve them. My apprenticeship has been good because it’s given me lots of exposure to different areas of cooking. I find it rewarding especially when I see people enjoying the food that I prepare for them.”

“I felt really confident that the knowledge that lecturers were passing onto us was teaching us the right way and when we finished our course we felt prepared and ready for the workforce.”

Career changer

“You can actually do what you love and do it for work.” After leaving the Army, Lauren Shields decided on a career change. Following her passion for something creative, she decided to study graphic design and is now working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator for some of Perth’s top clients. “The instructors were just incredible, they blew me away. It’s also a very practical course so I’ve been able to get skills that are very similar to a real client brief and we even worked on real client briefs so I felt like I was ready to come out into freelance or into an agency and deal with clients directly which was great.”

Employer

“North Metro TAFE understands our training needs, and thinks innovatively to provide flexible training delivery solutions, tailored for our organisation.” Roy Hill partners with us to offer traineeships in resource processing and surface extraction operations to its employees. “We appreciate the way North Metro TAFE has built leadership and innovation development programs into our traineeships key skills required for the future of mining.”

So I’ve learned a lot as far as actually a trade-based job because I haven’t really done anything trade-based before. The best thing about working as an electrical apprentice is definitely the variety, the hands-on approach and there’s so many different areas you can go to. The best thing about going to North Metro TAFE is definitely the lecturers, because I’m at Balga and yeah I’ve really enjoyed my time there. I highly recommend studying the Diploma of Human Resources Management at North Metro TAFE, because I believe the lecturers provide an excellent and supportive learning experience, that is often drawn from their own industry experience. I feel by the end of this course, I will have the skills and knowledge that the industry does desire, and the simulated work environment and practical assessments get you ready for the workplace. I studied a university pathway media course at school which was very theory driven and pushed me away because I’m very much a practical learner. By studying at North Metro TAFE I’ve had endless opportunities, networking and work experience such as working on The Heights TV series with the ABC. Currently I’m working as a Camera and Lighting Operator for Channel Nine and I’m doing a segment on The Today Show with Adrian Alaberg. I decided that I wanted to give more to my community and being Indigenous we have a very high population of community out there that are struggling with identity crisis. I thought, you know what for someone that’s had mentors over the years I’d love to give that back to them. I had really awesome lecturers a lot of them stood by me, stayed back and helped me with my personal stuff as well. I never thought it was possible to go back after ten years and study. I decided to get a trade and earn more money and secure a better future for my family. I did my pre-apprenticeship course in heavy fabrication and achieved an apprenticeship out of it. Doing an apprenticeship is an investment in yourself and investment in your future and it pays dividends later. If it wasn’t for the lecturers at North Metro TAFE I probably wouldn’t have got this job.
