work sample 2012 Hanging Garden Community Center | academic Construction Documents | multi-family residential Reclaim - A wine barrel chair | furniture design & build
Krusmatagade Alle is a street where the south facing side is composed of onefive story brick apartment complex and two story tall colorful row houses, with an empty lot between the two entities. Not only is there a difference in height between the complex and row houses, there is also an offset in plan. The larger urban plan seeks a community center, while this empty lot seeks a sensitive design to bridge the gap between the contextual differences.

The gesture of the project extends and overlaps the heights of the existing buildings. The intersection of the masses creates the vertical circulation. The southern orientation is ideal for vegetation, enabling the project to not only be a community center, but community kitchen, where the neighborhood can come together over growing their own food, cooking, and sitting down for long - Danish style meals. The street facade is invigorated with the hanging garden and complimentary perforated corten steel. Sunlight, both diffuse and direct, infuse the spaces through the skylight, the garden and the perforated steel.

Reclaim is constructed out of a wine barrel. The natural curve of the wood creates an ergonomic seat and backrest. Staves were cut down into modular 1 inch strips to create a snug interlocking fit between the seat and backrest. Metal barrel hoops were deconstructed, predrilled and used to join the 1 inch modular stave strips. Full sized staves are used for the armrests. The base of the chair is an ongoing exploration, currently on the third iteration. Hanging Garden Community Center | academic Construction Documents | multi-family residential
Reclaim - A wine barrel chair | furniture design & build
A dining room chair, Reclaim is designed to be used as a group of chairs. The high back limits the sight of vision, thus defining is own visual space and creating a space within a space. Designed and built for the 2009 Vellum Design Competition held by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, in conjunction with Nature’s Elements Thesis Project. Reclaim won the Cradle to Cradle award for its innovative reuse of material. Scope: To develop marketing material for the Simple, Quick & Affordable Program (SQA). The intension was to build knowledge of the program. The SQA “typicals,” featured below, show furniture configurations that act as idea starters for clients.
