WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
Simon Cox, Editor
Welcome to the tenth edition of NNBN Digital and what a busy quarter we’ve had. Since we launched NNBN I personally feel this has been the most exciting quarter since I last wrote these notes for the February edition.
You’ll be able to read about the Parliamentary Trip to London where twenty one of our members joined Marie and I for a tour of the Houses of Parliament, a round table Q&A with Northamptonshire MPs and then staying on to watch the House of Commons in action with various key conversations going on.
I was honoured to have been invited to attend this year’s Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace the following day and you can read all about our afternoon in this edition. Both Marie and I are truly grateful for the opportunity.
Our membership continues to grow and we’re delighted that Northampton Town Football Club have joined us as a Member. Watch this space for future announcements around this as we work with them to support their League One campaign next season.
We’ve also been joined by other new members in the last quarter and we delighted to welcome them to the NNBN Member Community.
We’ve also seen entries coming in for this year’s NNBN Awards which take place in October. Just a reminder, there is only one month left to enter so if you are planning to enter, then you need to ensure you’ve completed your entry form by MIDDAY on 30th June.
Digital NBN
KEEPING IT LOCAL
The NNBN Awards are open to both members of NNBN and non-members so get your entries in! More can be found on page 25.
We’re looking forward to NNSTARTUP DAY which takes place ONLINE on Wednesday 19th June and celebrates entrepreneurship and starting businesses here in Northamptonshire. We’re delighted that this year’s NNSTARTUP DAY is going to be bigger and better than the two previous years’ and we can’t wait. Entrepreneurship is key for our local economy and we’re delighted to be leading this for the County.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate a few of our members on their recent success of being announced as Finalist at this year’s BBC Make A Difference Awards. Many congratulations to Mark Jones from Repair Not Replace and my wife and fellow NNBN Director Marie Cox who has been nominated with her business Poppy Design Studio & Marketing for The Green Award category and to Ian Griffiths from Beat Route Radio for the announcement that he is a Finalist in the Volunteer of the Year category.
Finally, thank you to everyone who continues to support our member community. We are delighted that we are driving forward, supporting our members and helping them to grow in various ways – adding more to our county and ultimately, local people.
Thank you for your continued support.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE BUSINESS, CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS VISIT PARLIAMENT TO DISCUSS KEY ISSUES WITH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MPS
Northamptonshire business owners, representatives of local colleges, charities and Northamptonshire visitor attractions met with Northamptonshire MPs recently at an event organised by NNBN.
Twenty one members of NNBN joined co-founders Simon and Marie Cox to travel to London as the party undertook a tour of the Palace of Westminster and Houses of Parliament, met with MPs and witnessed Parliament sitting in action with the afternoon’s proceedings taking place with a strong focus on Defence.
As part of the day, members were able to engage with three of Northamptonshire MPs, Philip Hollobone (Kettering), new elected Labour MP Gen Kitchen (Wellingborough and Rushden) and Andrew Lewer MBE (Northampton South) to raise questions around a variety of topics and to ask for further engagement around key issues that they were facing.
Organiser and Director of NNBN Simon Cox said “It was an amazing opportunity for our members to join Marie and I in the Houses of Parliament and take in the history of the building, engage in the round table meeting and enjoy witnessing Parliament in action later in the afternoon.
I was delighted that our members were able to raise their questions to the MPs and that they were willing to listen to concerns. There are follow up meetings to be had from the Q&A round table meeting and we look forward to helping our members engage further with these conversations.
We would like to thank the three Northamptonshire MPs who joined us for the round table Q&A after the tour and appreciated their time and openness when it came to the questions that were raised.
We’re also delighted that we were able to organise the visit and support our members with their questions. It was an incredible day where Northamptonshire came together at the top of the UK where business takes place constantly and we would like to thank our members for joining us and being part of the day.
I would also like to thank Philip Hollobone, MP for Kettering, for his hospitality on the day and helping to facilitate the visit which was appreciated by our members.”
UPDATE SINCE THE VISIT:
Since our visit, Parliament has since been dissolved due to the General Election and we will continue our conversations with the newly or re-elected MPS after the General Election.
NNBN DUO ATTEND ROYAL GARDEN PARTY
Simon and Marie were honoured to attend the Royal Garden Party earlier this month as guests of the Royal Family and what a day it turned out to be.
The invitation came to Simon earlier this year and just so happened to fall on a date which was the following day to the Parliament visit so it was an ideal opportunity to stay over in London and take in both visits inside 48 hours.
Simon gives us an insight to what the day was about: “I was honoured to have been invited and to have Marie with me was an amazing experience for us both.”
“As most people know, I’m passionate about helping supporting those local in our community and it was an honour to receive an invite however, a lot of what people see me involved in can’t be done without the support of Marie and for that I’m grateful.”
“I may come up with ideas and be more visible, but Marie is equally as important in what we do within NNBN and various other projects we’ve been involved in and I’m delighted she was able to join me at the Royal Garden Party as my business partner and my wife.”
“To be around so many inspirational and incredible people throughout the afternoon was a once in a lifetime experience and I’ll admit that we were both a little nervous about attending, but WOW. We just took it all in and enjoyed the time that we had in the presence of the Royal Family and their guests.”
Despite the pouring rain, the couple enjoyed engaging with people from across the UK – all who had some tremendous life experiences and were dedicated to working hard in their local community to benefit others.
“Yes it poured with rain and what more can you expect –it’s what we’ve got used to in recent years but it didn’t stop everyone having an enjoyable time, inf act, it connected people with a common connection…… the weather! We all gathered under our umbrellas trying to keep each other dry and that’s what connected us in the time we had together.”
“With pop up shelters being created, we were able to share time with the Royal Family and their guests as everyone stood to sing the National Anthem before the Royal party mingled with those in attendance.”
“We were fortunate and honoured to spend some time with both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugine of York who were engaged in the work we’ve been doing in Northamptonshire where we explained to them about how we help connect and support people in the County, not only through NNBN, but previous ventures that we’ve been involved in, created and driven.”
“We were both pinching ourselves to be honest that we’d been inside the gates of Buckingham Palace and enjoyed the time we had there.”
“We were a few feet away from Prince William who engaged with guests and were entertained by both Zara and Mike Tindall who spoke to us as the Royal Family walked through a line of guests and back to the Palace.”
“We’re so grateful for the opportunity to attend and will never forget the afternoon. It’s not everyday we get to London, but to think we were invited this year and on the back of the previous day’s visit to the Houses of Parliament, it was an incredible two days that will live long in our memories.”

FAMILY RUN IT CONSULTANCY ANNOUNCES EXCITING PLANS FOR EXPANSION
FAMILY-run IT consultancy 3RS IT Solutions has announced exciting expansion plans just weeks after marking its first anniversary in February.
Wellingborough-based 3RS, which was launched by husbandand-wife team, Steve and Leila Souch in 2023, has enjoyed tremendous success over the past year attracting new clients across Northamptonshire while strengthening its team with six highly-trained engineers.
Now, the couple is looking to extend the company’s reach even further into the East Midlands with the opening of a second branch office at Business Box in Leicester, following the successful opening of offices in Wellingborough and Nottingham.
Director, Steve Souch said: “North Northamptonshire will always be home to 3RS IT Solutions but the opening of our branches in Nottingham and Leicester really positions us as one of the most ambitious and dynamic IT consultancies in the region.
“We’ve seen considerable growth over the past year, with new clients coming on board and we believe that now is the right time to accelerate our growth and extend our reach and influence into other parts of the East Midlands. The opening of the new office is central to that plan, allowing us to create new jobs in Leicester, which is perfectly located in the heart of England and where demand for our services is high.
“The success of 3RS IT Solutions is down in no small part to the hard work and dedication of the whole team. Our strong family values, together with the team’s considerable expertise, are a winning combination and we can’t wait to see where the opening of our new office takes us.”
Marketing Director, Leila Souch said: “To be able to take this next step in our business – which was set up with our sons Reuben, Riley and Rory – the 3RS – at its heart is very special.
“At 3RS, family really does mean everything. We’re so much more than just a business – we want to provide livelihoods for our team and their families, create a culture we can all be proud of and first-class service for our clients.
“We can’t wait to share our products and services with our new clients in Leicester very soon.”

NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER NORTHAMPTONSHIRE FOOD AND DRINK AWARDS!
The sixteenth year of the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards are well underway, with entries closing soon for some of the most hotly contested categories; Booker Young Chef of the Year, Whitco Chef of the Year, Booker Gastro Pub of the Year, Community Café, Restaurant and World Cuisine Restaurant of the Year.
Recognising and celebrating excellence in the sector’s brilliant people, places and produce, the competition for these popular categories grows bigger each year, as hospitality professionals from all around the county recognise just how much winning can mean, to even the most established chef, café, pub or restaurant.
Rachel Mallows MBE, Awards Director said “As well as highlighting a commitment to serving and supporting local, we know from talking to past winners that these accolades really set businesses apart as leaders in the Northamptonshire food and drink scene, and help with attracting new customers, which is so important when businesses are battling rising costs and spending pressures”.
The Palmichael, Kettering was a Gold winner in last year’s Restaurant of the Year category. Restaurant Manager Maria Walker commented: “We were delighted to be recognised alongside other outstanding local restaurants in the finals. Then going on to win Restaurant of the Year in 2016, 2018 and again in 2023 was a prestigious moment for us. This amazing accolade is not just an award, it’s a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team.
“I would encourage everyone to enter. Being a small local business has its challenges and by raising awareness of independent establishments, the Weetabix Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards have helped many small businesses generate growth and gain the recognition that they deserve.
“The overall experience has been nothing but positive for us in terms of attracting new customers from across Northamptonshire and further afield, connecting with fantastic new local suppliers, and knowing there is a network of mentors who really believe in your business and will help guide you in the right direction.”
Young chefs go from strength to strength when the sector shines a spotlight on their hard work and exceptional talents. Last year’s winner, Jade Walter from Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa, commented::
“Entering the Young Chef competition was a transformative experience for me, offering opportunities for growth, exposure to new culinary techniques, and the chance to showcase my talent on a broader stage.
It wasn’t just about winning, but about pushing boundaries and evolving as a young chef.”
Martin Allen, Executive Chef at Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa added:
“From a business perspective having young chefs enter competitions creates exposure and credibility for both the business they work for, and for the chef themselves, which enhances their professional reputation and opens doors to new opportunities. The experience of this Young Chef of the Year competition has helped Jade confidently innovate dishes, refine her skills, and push for future culinary success.”

COMMUNITY GARDEN UNVEILED AT NORTHAMPTONSHIRE HERITAGE SITE TO EDUCATE, PRODUCE AND EQUIP
A community garden has been unveiled at The Chester House Estate in Irchester, with the aim of establishing a learning environment, growing local produce and bringing the sense of community to partners and visitors.
Based at The Chester House Estate, the garden programme is a partnership initiative with Creating Tomorrow College, Nene Rivers Trust and the Archaeological Resource Centre (ARC). The project will focus on providing opportunities for physical activity, social interaction, and learning about food and resources.
Cllr Helen Howell, North Northamptonshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Sport, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:
“I am immensely proud of the collaboration among various partners to establish a lasting community resource. This garden is more than a source of fresh produce for the café and our vegetable box program – it is a cornerstone of education at our onsite Creating Tomorrow College. Here, students not only cultivate employability and life skills but also gain practical knowledge in horticulture and culinary arts, ensuring they are prepared for the future.”
Rickileigh Edwards, Project Officer at Nene Rivers Trust, said: “The expert Curators at the Estate advised us on where we could build the garden so it didn’t interfere with the archaeology under the landscape, and we created the garden through ‘no dig methods’ using raised bed planters built from pallets that we found and repurposed.
The students have been using egg boxes as planters to sprout flowers and herbs before planting them in the planters, and we have designed a rainwater catching system off the side of one of the buildings to collect up to two thousand litres of water.
“Potatoes, peas, garlic, chilli, fennel and carrots have been planted in the garden, and flowers and herbs take up the majority of one of the plots as they are shallowrooted. The waste from the Farmhouse cafe will be used for compost, produce that is grown will be used for food preparation classes organised by Nene Rivers Trust, and we eventually hope to sell vegetable boxes on site at cheaper rates to make healthy eating accessible to everyone.”
The community garden will be open for the public to visit from early Summer, where visitors have free parking and free entry to the entire Estate. The project team are urging local businesses to support with funding, grounds clearance and partnerships to further strengthen the garden as a community asset.
The project has been made possible by the Co-op Local Community Fund and you can visit the Nene Rivers Trust website to find out more about the community garden.

WHAT IS THE GOOD BUSINESS CHARTER?
The Good Business Charter is a simple yet effective accreditation scheme, designed to recognise, encourage and champion responsible business behaviour in the UK. Developed in collaboration with the TUC and FSB, it measures behaviour over ten components that matter to everyone, collectively covering care for employees, suppliers, customers and the environment, whilst committing companies to paying their fair share of tax.
Launched in February 2020, and with more than 1300 organisations already accredited, it attracts interest from sole traders, FTSE100 companies, charities and the public sector, including: Richer Sounds; TSB; Aviva; Brompton Bikes and the University of Northampton. Accreditation costs just £25 per year (flat rate) for organisations with 0-50 employees; larger organisations (with 51 or more employees) pay £1 per employee, per year, capped at a maximum of £2500 (£500 cap for public and third sector). The application process is straightforward and can be completed online.
As a benchmark for good business, the GBC has the potential to change behaviour across all sectors, resulting in a positive impact for employees, customers and suppliers. Could now be the time that you joined the movement for a fairer, sustainable world where people matter? Don’t delay, accreditation is currently free for the first year – offer expires on 31st December 2023.
“North Yorkshire currently has the highest number of accredited organisations outside of Greater London (136), wouldn’t it be fantastic to see Northants smash that and take top place!”
- Jenny Herrera, CEO

INDEPENDENT RETAILERS ASSOCIATION SAYS INFLATION FALL TO 2.3% IS A STEP TO BRING PEOPLE BACK TO THE HIGH STREET
The British Independent Retailers Association has said the inflation rate fall to 2.3% today is a good step to help bring people back to the high street – but stresses the Bank of England needs to now reduce interest rates too.
Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, has reacted to the news that the UK inflation rate has fallen to a figure just below the Bank of England’s target of 2%. This marks the lowest level in almost three years.
The fall, which is the lowest level in almost three years, means prices are still rising but just at a slower rate.
Energy prices are at the heart of this, as they fell by 27.1% in April.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira said: “Inflation has fallen lower than expected and is now only slightly above the Bank of England target of 2%. Although the services sector and core inflation has not fallen as much, we hope that the Bank of England will have the confidence to reduce interest rates.
“Reducing interest rates is crucial to fully restoring consumer confidence and bring people back to the high streets,” he said.

LOCAL SWIMMERS TO PARTICIPATE IN GREAT NORTH SWIM TO SUPPORT BEREAVEMENT MATERNITY SUITE AT KETTERING GENERAL
Local residents Jack Pishhorn and Nick Hayton are excited to announce their participation in the Great North Swim at Lake Windermere this June. They are swimming in support of the Twinkling Stars appeal by Northamptonshire Health Charity at Kettering General Hospital. This initiative aims to raise funds for a muchneeded bereavement maternity suite.
The Twinkling Stars appeal focuses on providing a dedicated space for patients and families dealing with loss. The funds raised will contribute to building individual rooms, a dedicated entrance, and a serene outdoor area, ensuring comfort and privacy during difficult times.
“I am thrilled to take part in the Great North Swim and support such an important cause,” said Jack Pishhorn. “The bereavement maternity suite will offer essential support to families in their time of need, and we hope our efforts can make a significant difference.”
Nick Hayton echoed this sentiment, stating, “It’s an honour to swim alongside Jack for the Twinkling Stars appeal. The support from our community will help create a compassionate and peaceful environment for those who need it most.”
Nick Hayton added, “Participating in the Great North Swim is a personal challenge for me, but it’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by families dealing with loss. Knowing that our efforts will help provide them with a comforting and private space is incredibly motivating.”
The Great North Swim is a renowned open-water swimming event, attracting participants from all over the country. Jack Pishhorn and Nick Hayton are looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to make a positive impact.

INNOVATION = GROWTH
According to The UK Innovation Report 2024 The UK is a leading global hub for scientific knowledge however falls behind in converting that knowledge into commercial success. (1) This is not a new trend, but it does provide an opportunity. What if this conversion rate can be improved?
The journey from knowledge to a commercial success forms the basis of the innovation process. Innovation being defined as a product, service, business model, or strategy that’s both novel and useful. Innovations don’t have to be major breakthroughs in technology or new business models; they can be as simple as upgrades to a company’s customer service or features added to an existing product. (2)
Innovation is important in all businesses for
•Securing future revenue
•Keeping ahead of the competition
•Being agile and ready to deal with change.
Studies reveal that when disruption hits, companies that invest in innovation outperform the market by up to 30%. (3) But 75% of organisations admit that their approach to innovation is not structured and 80% of organisations consider that their creativity and innovation training needs are not fully fulfilled. (3).
An opportunity therefore exists to get better results from innovation and that starts by considering your team’s capabilities to achieve more success. As they form the basis of the business, they have considerable amount of knowledge and ideas. Imagine the impact of refining core skills in critical thinking, lateral thinking and problem solving to improve your team’s
Ability to pause and ask questions to gain information to focus idea generation.
•Ability to research existing resource, to establish baseline purpose and direction of ideas
•Use of play and experimentation, making connections and discovering ideas.
•Screening and selection of the best ideas, in a logical format.
•Qualification of success and progress of ideas.
From Blockbuster to Little Chef history is littered with businesses that rejected this approach. Preferring to keep doing what they had always done. Where are they know?
The optimisation training programme from Sara Penrose Ltd helps you to optimise your business performance to achieve better results from innovation, by refining the core skills of your team. We’d be delighted to start a conversation on how we can help. workshops@sarapenrose.co.uk

NORTHAMPTON OFFICE HUB WINS AWARD FOR
POSITIVE IMPACT ON COUNTY
Vulcan Works, a serviced workspace hub for startup businesses in Northampton, has won an award for the positive impact it has had on the county since opening its doors in February 2023.
The Gold Positive Impact Award was presented at the Northamptonshire SME Awards ceremony on Thursday 2nd May, with judges praising Vulcan Works for ‘innovating and adapting their business to not only thrive but benefit the wider community’.
Despite only opening to the public 15 months ago, Vulcan Works has quickly established itself as a crucial part of the local business community.
It has supported young businesses and startups in the digital and creative industries, not just with office, workshop and coworking spaces, but through organising events and offering nurturing business support. It has also linked up with some trusted national partners, such as Barclays and Natwest, and local business support organisations including SEMLEP, The Marketing Meet Up, Northampton BID, NNBN and Digital Northants to offer practical business support, networking and workshops. In addition to this, the centre launched its own incubation programme for entrepreneurs in January called Vulcan Creatives.
The team have also supported local groups and organisations at times of need, offering workshop space to the Royal & Derngate theatre and NN Arts to enable vital arts events and projects to continue. Footfall monitors also show that other businesses in the Cultural Quarter have seen more visitors since Vulcan Works opened its doors.
Centre Manager at Vulcan Works, Garrick Hurter, said:
“We are incredibly proud and honoured to have won this Positive Impact Award. It is a great team effort to make Vulcan Works what it is and enable it to provide the support that it does to local businesses. We have worked hard to build, not only an inspiring and collaborative place to work that people enjoy coming to, but also building a growing community of businesses who can flourish in Northamptonshire.”
Vulcan Works was also a finalist in the Business Innovation category for the innovative but sympathetic renovation of derelict council buildings to create an incubation space for startup businesses in the creative and digital industries –sectors that were identified as important, growing sectors in Northamptonshire by West Northamptonshire Council (WNC). The works were funded by WNC and South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP), who facilitated a Local Growth Fund contribution of £6.3 million, together with £3.06 million from the European Regional Development Fund.
Cllr Dan Lister, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Town Centre Regeneration and Growth, said: “From the start of the project our vision for the Vulcan Works was for the space to have a positive impact on the local business community. Not only does it offer unique first-rate business support, it also provides a community hub for SMEs to grow and nurture their business. We look forward to seeing the Vulcan Works going from strength to strength.”

PIONEERING NORTHANTS BUSINESSES HOSTED A B CORP AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS EVENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON
The Northants B Corp Community, made up of 14 certified B Corporations, held a well-attended B Corp and Sustainable Business Event, in conjunction with the Centre for Sustainable Business Practices (CSBP) at the University of Northampton. Over 40 businesses and business support representatives took part in engaging round table discussions and enjoyed networking and learning from each other.
What is a B Corp?
Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified by third party B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B stands for Benefit for all. The B Corp movement is a global movement of people using business as a force for good.
Who are the Northamptonshire B Corps?
B Corps are represented in all corners of the UK. There are now over 1,900 Certified B Corporations in the UK employing over 80,000 people. Northamptonshire has 14 certified B Corps, with a number of other businesses working towards certification. They come from a variety of industries and sectors; food and drink, personal care, financial planning, HR, Built Environment, Consultancy, and consumer products. The purpose of the Northants B Corp community group is to engage, connect and support the shared interests of like-minded businesses in the Northants area, and raise awareness of the B Corp movement. For a full list of Northamptonshire B Corp businesses - find out here
The aim of all the certified B Corps in Northamptonshire is to leverage the breadth of insights, experience, and innovations across their industries to share best practices and support and influence the wider Northamptonshire business community.
Why aspire to be a B Corp?
Britain has one of the largest and fastest-growing communities of sustainable businesses in the world. With the UN calling for transformational change to avoid climate disaster, now more than ever the UK needs business to act as a force for good. Compared to traditional businesses, B Lab UK data shows that B Corps have a faster growth in turnover (27% vs 5%) and employee headcount (14% vs 1%), greater levels of employee retention, engagement and diversity, higher levels of innovation and are more successful in securing equity finance (70% vs 56%). And finally, more than half of UK adults use business certifications to make decisions about business to buy from and work for.

Are you ready for 2025?
From 2025, UK and EU regulations will come into force, meaning that most small businesses will need to have a carbon reduction plan
Take the first steps in creating a plan for your small business.
Estimate your carbon footprint in less than 3 minutes. Create your own plan using the action cards.
Leave with simple, practical actions that will make an impact
Scan to join the next Carbon Reduction Plan workshop.
WHY ALL BUSINESSES NEED A CARBON REDUCTION PLAN AND WHY THIS WILL RESULT IN A MORE RESILIENT AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS COMMUNITY.
In 2019, the UK became the first major economy to adopt a legal commitment to achieve ‘Net Zero’ carbon emissions by 2050. Closer to home, West Northamptonshire Council has set a net zero target for its own emissions by 2030 and those of residents and businesses by 2045. North Northamptonshire council has committed to becoming a carbon-neutral council by 2030 and aligns to the national net zero goal of 2050.
Targets and pledges are well and good, but the majority of climate experts state that the UK, along with all developing nations are not nearly on track to achieve these goals and meanwhile the world keeps warming and climate risks escalate. In addition, UK and EU regulation coming into force over the next year will require many SMEs to have a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) in place in order to tender for government contracts or to work with larger suppliers.
Businesses and organisations need to respond by putting carbon reduction and sustainability at the centre of their strategy. This is an opportunity for businesses, particularly small businesses, that is often overlooked or low down on the list of priorities. Businesses fear that carbon reduction initiatives will be expensive or be viewed as greenwashing or a marketing gimmick. The reality is that it is simply good business strategy. It is not as big a task as it seems at first. Some of the biggest impact actions are the simplest to make. And the rewards are plentiful; from cutting costs, attracting new customers and employees, influencing others and by simply doing what’s right, you will enhance your reputation.
How to start a carbon reduction plan
• Step 1: Make sure everyone understands the environmental impacts of your business activities and that everyone in your business is involved – from senior management to all employees.
• Step 2: Measure your carbon emissions and get a baseline idea of your environmental impact and where your main emissions are coming from.
• Step 3: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Focus on the main areas of negative impact and work out how to improve them.
• Step 4: Tell people what you are doing; your employees, your customers, your suppliers, and other stakeholders.
Where to get help

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS STARS ETHAN WALLER AND COURTNEY LAWES BECOME CHARITY AMBASSADORS
Northampton Saints players Ethan Waller and Courtney Lawes have pledged to use their platform to influence positive change for young people and spread awareness of Northampton Saints Foundation, as they become charity ambassadors.
Courtney, who will leave Northampton Saints at the end of the 2023/2024 season, after 17 seasons, to continue his career overseas, with CA Brive in France, reached out to express his interest in becoming an ambassador having learned about the transformative work of the Foundation and sharing its vision and belief for providing better opportunities for young people.
The Saints, England and Lions Flanker shares a personal connection and hopes to help and inspire future generations in achieving their aspirations.
Having previously advocated for government improvements in youth sports opportunities, Courtney expressed his commitment saying “I firmly believe that every young person deserves the chance to fulfil their potential, regardless of their background or circumstances. By becoming an ambassador for the Foundation, I am committed to amplifying our voices and pushing for the necessary changes to ensure that all young people have access to the opportunities they deserve. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of future generations.”
Ethan Waller, who will retire from professional rugby at the end of the 2023/2024 season after 124 appearances, returned to Northampton from Worcester with a desire to give back and support the Foundation. Ethan has worked closely with young people on the Foundation’s education and social inclusion programmes and volunteered his time through activities, events and engagements.
“Returning to Northampton was more than just about playing rugby for me. It was about coming back to a community that I deeply care about and giving back in any way I can, the Foundation’s work resonates with me on a personal level, and I’m passionate about supporting initiatives that empower young people to succeed. As an ambassador, I am excited to continue my involvement and contribute to creating positive change in our community.”
Reflecting on the news, Catherine Deans, Managing Director at Northampton Saints Foundation, said, “It’s an honour to welcome both Ethan and Courtney as ambassadors. They are incredibly humble and supportive individuals who, despite hanging up their Saints boots, are dedicated to staying involved to bring change and raise awareness for the real-life issues the Foundation advocates for.
“Our Foundation is committed to making a difference in our community and our ambition is to give every person the chance for a positive future. We’re working tirelessly on initiatives aimed at reducing those not in education, employment, or training, supporting young people who are on the edge of exclusion or refusing school to ensure they stay on the right path, and tackling the alarming waiting lists for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
Additionally, we’re dedicated to addressing issues such as youth involvement in crime, gang culture, county lines, and knife crime. We are actively working to improve the social, emotional, physical, and mental health of young people in our local community”.

STARTING UP, SCALING UP: A CONVERSATION WITH SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR SAMUEL PETKO
In the ever evolving business landscape, few professional figures inspire quite like the serial entrepreneur. For Samuel Petko, the excitement of building opportunities is not just a thrill-seeking one-time adventure—it is a driving force. In an exclusive interview with Samuel, we dive deep into his entrepreneurial journey, exploring his motivations and lessons learned from launching not just one, but a string of successful ventures.
What was your first startup idea, and what inspired you to launch it?
After working in direct sales for a few years, I thought of setting up my own company. As I speak a few languages, and really got on well with other Eastern Europeans, I realised that there are not many good affordable language schools which provide high quality English language lessons. Local colleges did offer ESOL courses, but they were not as flexible in organizing timetables. In 2011, after thorough market research and preparing a comprehensive business plan, I decided to start with a team of two: my partner as the English teacher and myself heading the business side of things. Since then, the company has grown and transitioned into becoming an independent training provider, working alongside and partnering with several nationwide providers and colleges, delivering thousands of qualifications.
Currently speaking, how many businesses do you own and run?
I am currently involved in Private English Class Ltd., the aforementioned education business, despite not owning it any more. Post-pandemic, I have decided to build another business, Scale Up Outsourcing Ltd., which focuses more on a B2B model. With the knowledge, expertise and experience I have acquired during the previous years of running a multi-site business, managing 10 to 20 people, and working in multi-academy-trusts in finance roles, I realised that I have the necessary tools to help other business owners grow. Scale Up Outsourcing Ltd. supports SMEs with scaling up and growth through finding the right global talent working remotely. We occupy a unique position wherein we share lines between an agency and a BPO (Business Process Outsourcing). In simple terms, we get you the right person to join your team who can accelerate the growth of your business. Lastly, I’ve set up two investment companies and I’m working on some more joint ventures with other business investors.
Did you always know you wanted to be a serial entrepreneur/CEO of different businesses?
From an early age, probably around 14-15, I already knew I wanted to run a business. Subjects such as economics, accounting, marketing among many similar areas were always of interest to me.
What’s been your biggest success story so far?
It’s difficult to pick just one, but in business, I think it was the growth year on year basis even during the pandemic. Those were quite challenging years, but thanks to some swift decisions and switching to an online/remote way of work, we steered through the time quite well. That is when I had an epiphany to actually start my own outsourcing/offshoring business.
What’s been the toughest obstacle you’ve faced as a CEO of multiple startup businesses?
The biggest problem of running one business as a director was the realisation that I haven’t spent any time on building business relationships. For many years, I was more customer-focused, not recognising that I was supposed to work ON the business and not IN the business. Currently, when running several businesses, I learned how to delegate and focus on my role rather than working on everything and anything.
How do you deal with setbacks and failures?
Stand up and carry on. Setbacks and failures are part of the journey. As soon as one understands that it is inevitable, it is easier to do business. I always analysed what went wrong and why, and try to take lessons from it. Even more successful people I work with, multimillionaires who run several large businesses, explain to me that failures are lessons.
What kind of people do you look for when hiring for your or clients’ companies?
My view of the business structure changed over the years. It was mainly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, when suddenly everyone started to work from home. This made me understand that I should not look locally, rather globally if I want to reap the benefits of what the world has to offer—even if you are running a small local business.
As location is out of the equation, I usually look for skills and attitude. Does this person know what they should be doing? Does this person have the right attitude to work, are they committed, would I be able to work with them? What value are they going to bring to the business?
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to start their own business?
I would advise you to find a mentor in the industry. For many people, it is something unimaginable, as anyone within the same industry is treated as a competitor. My advice would be to do as much networking as possible from the get-go and find people who can help you to go faster and make less (expensive) mistakes

From culture, green spaces, theme parks and water activities to shopping, local eateries, health, beauty and business services, what’s the best way to discover all that’s happening across North Northamptonshire?
DiscoverNN is the answer, a brand-new mobile app launched by North Northamptonshire Council, powered by technology provider Bubltown and funded by Government’s Welcome Back Fund, awarded to local authorities across the country last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the key aim of supporting local businesses and encouraging people to shop local, DiscoverNN features offers and tailor-made promotions for customers, geo-targeted events and activities, and is free to download.
The app is simple to use and available now for local residents and visitors to the area to help them see what’s on, find shopping opportunities, plan days out, make reservations, buy products, book services, plus much more!
Councillor Helen Howell, Deputy Leader of North Northamptonshire Council and Executive Member for Sport, Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “We are really excited to be launching DiscoverNN, especially in the Spring when the weather is improving, school holidays are approaching and people are making plans to get out and about to explore.
It is a great way to bring everything together in one place, making it easy for people to discover North Northamptonshire from the palm of their hand.
There’s still time for local businesses to sign up to be part of DiscoverNN, it’s simple, quick and free to join, and there’s support available. Businesses are invited to visit https://join.discovernn.co.uk to get signed up.
“There is a wonderful range of tourist attractions in the area which are featured on the app and website including the Chester House Estate, Wicksteed Park, and our beautiful country parks, to name a few.
“DiscoverNN is for everyone, and we hope that residents and visitors will download the app and start using it to explore places they’ve never been to before to discover everything North Northamptonshire has to offer, which includes some real hidden treasures!”

During the 2023/24 financial year, Northamptonshire Community Foundation awarded more than £2.97 million in grants to small charities, community groups and volunteer-led organisations across the county.
Rachel McGrath, CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “This milestone, awarding almost £3 million in grants, means that 2023 was our largest grantmaking year yet.
“I am so proud of our dedicated team of staff, trustees, volunteers, patrons and ambassadors who work so incredibly hard to help support brilliant local charities and volunteer-led groups on behalf of our generous donors to make a real difference in the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents and help our communities thrive.
This comes at a time when this support has been more needed then ever due to an ongoing cost of living crisis and our priority has been to award grants that help residents, families and communities that are struggling at this time. Local philanthropy really does make an impact and helps sustain some of our vital VCSE and charitable sector organisations as they meet increasing demands for their services. Together we help build long term resilience within our communities.”
Northamptonshire Community Foundation is the leading independent grant-making charity in Northamptonshire, providing funds that sustain a wide range of activities including food banks, counselling services, climate action projects and sports clubs.
