ambassador spotlight Mark Tulman

Thomas Hill — ACN Independent Business Owner and Ambassador of the Quarter

“Never Give Up. Never Surrender.” These are words that The Chamber’s Ambassador of the Quarter lives by each and every day. After two debilitating automobile accidents 20 years apart, and years of surgery, rehabilitation, and recovery, Thomas Hill could have easily lost his enthusiasm and zeal for life. However, these five words have helped Thomas search his soul and found that life is indeed worth living. After serving his country in the military, Thomas settled in Reno in 1988 because of the numerous job opportunities and outdoor activities. Eventually, those outdoor activities included prosperous work in remodeling and repairing ranches in Central Nevada. After surviving a near death experience in an automobile accident and overcoming three years of surgery and recovery, Thomas knew a better life was ahead and decided to attend college studying architecture and small business. Thomas became a contractor specializing in remodels and renovations. Active in the Fernley Chamber of Commerce, he helped raise money, and renovate a very dilapidated Fernley Chamber building. Thomas became a board member and was eventually voted to Vice President of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce. Like many Nevada contractors, Thomas’s successful business suffered in the recession of 2008.

Reno Quickbooks Training

Thomas took on temporary employment and ‘side’ jobs to make ends meet and to continue to strive towards his financial goals. In 2012, Thomas endured his second debilitating accident, crushed by two cars while standing in a parking lot. During his second road to recovery, Thomas knew that he could still be a productive and contributing member of society even though he was limited physically. Thomas read books on personal development, and continued his search for his next endeavor. Currently, Thomas is a telecommunications, merchant services, and energy broker. Having to network from scratch, Thomas looked to The Chamber to jump start his career. “Becoming a chamber member and ambassador has accomplished way more than just promoting my business. It has saved me and given me new life,” says Thomas. “My life has opened to infinite possibilities and opportunities, building new friendships and relationships, and learning new skills. The Chamber has become my new family.” Each day, Thomas will cite is favorite adage, “Never Give Up. Never Surrender.” Today, he is living proof that life is indeed worth living…advice that all of us can aspire to.

Mark Tulman is a business development representative for Nevada Association of Employers. He is the 2014 Chairman of The Chamber’s Ambassador program.

update Nevada AFL-CIO passes resolution opposing Margin Tax Initiative

The Nevada federation of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) passed a resolution opposing the Margin Tax Initiative during its COPE conference at the Circus Circus Hotel Casino in Reno today. This vote from the working men and women of Nevada is further proof that the Margin Tax Initiative, otherwise known as Question 3, would kill jobs and damage Nevada’s fragile economy. In part, the resolution reads: “Whereas many contractors have gone out of business during these poor economic times and the Education Initiative may place a tax burden on the contractors and business which have been surviving on marginal returns forcing them out of business as the tax burden may be higher than the profit margin; may it therefore be resolved that the Nevada State AFL-CIO and our affiliated Unions oppose the passage of tax policy while it is not clear what the effect on our signatory partners will be.” Question 3 is a deeply flawed tax measure that would damage Nevada’s struggling economy, cause the loss of thousands of jobs and force consumers to pay more for food, housing, utilities and healthcare – without guaranteeing more funds for education. Promoters claim the tax is for education. But the law lets the legislature divert the funds to anything. Employers would have to pay the tax even if they have no profits and are losing money. And, the tax would be imposed on the businesses that provide most of the jobs in Nevada: major employers and thousands of small businesses, including farms, restaurants, grocery stores and other local retailers. Question 3 would increase the tax burden on Nevada employers by hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Economic studies show that would cause the loss of thousands of existing jobs and make it extremely hard to attract new businesses and jobs to Nevada. To learn more about the Margin Tax Initiative, visit our website at StopTheMarginTax.com.

Chamber offers Electronic Funds Transfer The Chamber has been working to improve its billing and payments process. As part of this new process, members now have the option of making monthly, quarterly and yearly payments by an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This change will allow us to offer lower monthly dues payments with the ease of automatic payments. To get started with the Electronic Funds Transfer, simply request an authorization form and return to our office via email, fax or U.S. Mail at your earliest convenience. The Chamber will not begin debiting your account until your membership is up for renewal. For more information regarding EFT payments, please contact Jennifer Jones at jjones@thechambernv.org or 775-636-9553.
