Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of Privolzhsky Federal District, the administrative centre of Nizhny Novgorod region, the biggest business and cultural centre on the Volga, an important economic and transportation centre of the country. It is the fifth populous biggest city of Russia, within 400 km from Moscow and within 1140 km from Saint-Petersburg. The city is located on the confluence of the Volga, the biggest river in Europe, and its tributary – the Oka. The city is spread over 400 sq. km., which is a bit more than the territory of the island Malta and a bit less than the territory of Andorra. Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most ancient and picturesque cities of Russia. It is the geographical centre of the East European (Russian) Plain. The incredible beauty of the city is created by the unique landscape and diverse scenery: the low-lying left bank area of the Great Volga Plain is found side by side with the soaring steep slopes of the Dyatlov Hills of the Volga Upland. Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of Nizhny Novgorod and Suzdal princedom, the birthplace of the volunteer army of 1612, the capital of merchants the symbol of which is still the Nizhny Novgorod Trade Fair. In Soviet times it was famous as the major centre of car industry, shipbuilding, aircraft industry and radio physics; now it is widely renowned as a centre of IT and nanotechnology, a river cruise centre and a city where the biggest forums and international exhibitions take place. 1932 till 1990 the city had the name of Gorky in honour of the great Russian writer Maxim Gorky. From 1959 to 1991 Gorky was closed to foreigners. Welcome to Nizhny Novgorod, an ancient, picturesque, spiritually and intellectually rich city tinged with an air of mystery!

The history Nizhny Novgorod’s centuries-long history starts from the beginning of the XIII century. The city was founded in 1221 by Yuri (Georgy) Vsevolodovich, the Grand Prince of Vladimir. Being military and strategically favourably located, the city played an important role as a military outpost of Vladimir Suzdal Rus up to the middle of the XVI century, shielding the borders of Russian princedoms from the raids of Mordva, Cheremis and the Tatars. In the 15th – 17th centuries Nizhny Novgorod was an uezd (secondary-level of administrative division) city, since 1714 it was a gubernia city (secondary-level of administrative division), since 1932 it was renamed as Gorky and became the centre of Gorky krai (sub-region) and later the centre of Gorky region. In 1990 the city received its prior name Nizhny Novgorod.

From 1341 to 1392, over 50 years, Nizhny Novgorod was the capital of the independent Nizhny Novgorod Suzdal princedom, which spread over a vast territory from Kurmysh in the East to Murom in the West, including the cities of Suzdal and Shuya. In that time the Pechersky Monastery was set up and there one of the earliest chronicles the “Laurentian Codex” was compiled. In the XVI century Nizhny Novgorod performed an important historical mission for Russia. In the time of troubles Kuzma Minin, a respected member of the Zemstvo, called the people of Nizhny Novgorod to form a volunteer army in order to liberate the State from invaders. Each yard of Nizhny Novgorod contributed a fifth part of its property to the armament of the troops. The volunteer army headed by Kuzma Minin and the talented commander Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Rus from the foreign invasion and contributed to the formation of Russian statehood. For its people’s feat Nizhny Novgorod was conferred the title of the birthplace of the volunteer army and became the centre of “The National Unity Day” holiday.

One of the country’s first shipbuilding plants, the Sormovo plant “Krasnoye Sormovo”, produced river steamers, motor ships, sea-going vessels and submarines, steam engines and diesel engines, locomotives and carriages, ammunition and tanks T-34. Many things at the plant were and are still made for the first time ever: in 1870 – the first open-hearth furnace, in 1871 – the first double-decker paddle-boat “Perevorot”, in 1920 – the first Soviet tank, in 1957 – the first world’s hydrofoil “Raketa”. The sea-going vessel “Kometa” (1961) was the first vessel bought by a foreign country – Japan. Hydrofoils and then ground effect vehicles were designed by the outstanding design engineer Rostislav Evgenievich Alekseev (1916–1980). At “Krasnoye Sormovo” the best submarines of the XXI century, atomic submarines “Barrakuda” and “Kondor” are made. The first Soviet automobile plant with flow-line production was built in Nizhny Novgorod in an incredibly short time from 1930 to 1932. Near the plant there was built Sotsgorod – the first example of complex urban development in the country. The first home-produced car GAS-M-1 rolled off the production line on March 16, 1936. The first car people could buy was GAS-M20 which was rolled off the production line on November 6, 1944 and it was named “Pobeda” in 1945. The GrandPrize of Brussel’s Universal Industrial Exhibition in 1958 was awarded to GAZ-21 “Volga”, GAZ-13 “Chaika” and GAZ-52.

Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin – "a stone necklace at the slope of Dyatlovy Hills" 1. The building of the State Bank 2. The view of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin at the Volga side
2
This is the brightest precious among the sights of Nizhny Novgorod. The Kremlin in Nizhny Novgorod is a monument of city planning and architecture of federal importance. The stone Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1500–1511. It is the unique Kremlin in Russia located at the relief level difference (82 meters) and the first stone artillery-oriented fortress. That was the first fortress construction with towers built beyond the wall line. The technology was unique for that time (according to one of the version, the technology was invented by Leonardo da Vinci) made the fortress inaccessible and it has been never occupied by enemy. The Kremlin used to consist of 14 towers and 13 have been preserved and renovated up till now, their former height was 33
meters. The Kremlin walls were up to 3 meters wide and were crowned by covered gallery with firing ports. The length of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin walls is 2080 meters (only 150 meters shorter than Moscow Kremlin). The areas of the two Kremlins are similar too: Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is 45 hectares and Moscow Kremlin is 47 hectares. The group of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin buildings is a museum, cultural and business city centre. There are 15 historical and cultural monuments, a museum and an exhibition centre, the Cathedral of Archangel Michael and the Chapel in the name of the Saviour Not Made by Hands, an ancient Governor’s garden with unforgettable view at the Conflux and Volga valleys.
The building of the State Bank – "The golden Pocket of Russia" The building of the State Bank of the Russian Federation at Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street was constructed for the 300th anniversary of the Romanovs. The group of bank buildings were designed by an architect V.A. Pokrovsky in Russian Revival architecture style and is remarkable for capital immensity and rich decoration reminding both a medieval castle and boyar chambers of the 17th century with hiproofed porch. Nearby is a small tower with city-clock-chime.
3
The building of the bank has always served its direct aim. There was kept the main golden reserve of the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century that is why the Nizhny Novgorod branch of Sberbank was called “the golden pocket of Russia”. The interior of the building are decorated with rich paintings made by the sketch of a Russian painter I. Y. Bilibin. In 2013 the city will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the bank. There are guided tours in the bank building.

The Chkalov Stairway One of the most well-known symbols of Nizhny Novgorod is the famous memorial Chkalov Stairway. The authors of the longest rise at the riverbanks of the Volga are the famous architects A.A. Yakovlev, L.V. Rudnev and V.O. Mints. It starts at the sightseeing platform at the monument to the great Russian pilot, Valery Chkaov, who first in the world made a nonstop flight through the North Pole. Descending to the Volga the stairway connects The Minin Square and Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment via huge rings. The immense 560 steps long construction
foundation was made in 1943 in the honour of the Stalingrad battle victory and already in 1949 one was able to go down to the Volga to the place where a legend motor boat “Hero” (“Geroy”) was mounted. There is located an ancient park “Alexandrovsky Garden” to the left of the Chkalov Stairway and the route along the outside of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (from Zachatievskaya Tower to Dmitrievskaya Tower) begins to the right of the nigntclub “Premio”.
Merchant Chatygin House There are only 16 civil stone buildings of XVII century, remaining in Russia, and three of them are in Nizhny Novgorod. These are the stone house of merchant Chatygin, the house of burgomaster Pushnikov (Gogolya str., 52) and the house of merchant Olisov (Krutoy lane, 11b). You can admire these rare buildings and its laconic and moderate architecture in Nizhny Novgorod Zapochainie which is a city district beyond the Pochaina River. One of these old Russian masterpieces is the Merchant Chatygin House, or, how it is popularly called, “Peter`s House” (Pochainskaya str., 27). Here Tsar Peter I stayed in 1695 during the preparations for the Azov campaign, in 1722, when he set off for the Persian campaign, here he also celebrated his 50th anniversary and the 500th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod.
Masterpieces of Nizhny Novgorod architecture school Architectural concept of the group of buildings on M.Pokrovskaya Street, 7, proposed by the Nizhny Novgorod architects by the close of XX century, strikes by its stylistic continuity in regard to the building of the State Bank built in the early XX century. The complicated architecture of the house-“cofferet” or house which is “quoting” fashion trends of the past with an entrance resembling a “key hole” and ceramic art in the Bilibin style contrasts against the second modern part of the group of buildings aspiring to the future. Both buildings were awarded by the Russian State Prize. This group of buildings became one of the outstanding examples of the Nizhny Novgorod modern architecture school which ranks first as per the citation index in the world and Russian specialized print media. 10

Main Fair House is a symbol of Russian merchantry
The biggest multifunctional building of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair was erected in the style of old Russian architecture of XVII century. The building was constructed in 1889 (just in 1 year) upon the projects of architects A.I. von Hohen, G.A.Trambitsky, K.V. Treyman.
It was an administrative center of the fair, here the apartment of the governor and his office were situated during the fair time, the fair office and committee, a branch of the state bank were also stationed here, and the shops in the beautiful arcades on the ground floor were always busy. For two centuries the Fair House has been a principal place of business of Russian merchants.
Monument to Kuzma MININ and Dmitry POZHARSKY A new square – Square of National Unity (Ploshchad Narodnogo Edinstva) was opened in 2005 in Nizhny Novgorod at the beginning of Rozhdestvenskaya Street, against the walls of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and the Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist where once the famous appeal for rescue of the Motherland was heard. The monument to Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky by Z.Tsereteli was erected in the middle of the square. This is a reduced copy of the monument done upon the project of A.I.Melnikov and I.P.Martos which is situated now on Red Square in Moscow, but was initially designed in XIX century for Nizhny Novgorod.
Building of the City Duma and fountain The impressive building of the former City Duma (later renamed – Palace of Labour) is also one of the landmarks of the city. The building was erected in 1903 for the City Duma upon the project of architect V.P.Tseydler. It beautifully decorates Minin and Pozharsky Square, smoothly harmonizing with the ancient walls of Kremlin, and at the same time it sets the style of the main street of the city – Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. The mini-park on Minin and Pozharsky Square is decorated with an old cast-iron fountain. It was opened in 1847. The author of the project was the genial engineer A.I.Delvig, who managed the building of Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railway and designed the first public waterworks system in Nizhny Novgorod. At present the fountain became also a light-musical one and in wintertime luxurious lighting of the fountain, arches and lanterns turns this cozy city mini-park to a small fairy land.

manuscripts and books of XVI–XIX centuries. Nowadays the Seminary located in one of the monastery buildings carries on traditions of spiritual enlightenment and not infrequently you can enjoy regular harmonious singing of the male choir at a church service.
Due to the patronage of princes and Moscow metropolitans the monastery has accumulated a huge library which includes
The architectural character of the today monastery formed basically in the XVII–XVIII centuries.
The Pechersky Ascension Monastery The monastery is an ancient centre of religious life. It was set up in 1328 near the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod on the pattern of the Kiev Pecherk Lavra where the founder of the monastery the monk Laurentius came from. The monks lived in caves (in old Russian “pechera” means “a cave”), that is where the name of the monastery originated from. Here the monk Laurentius compiled a chronicle which included Vladimir Monomach’s Instruction. We owe to the Pechersky monastery such great Russian saints as St. Evphimy of Suzdal and St. Makary Zheltovodsky who joined the Pechersky monastery and became the followers of Dionisy.
In 1957 at the ancient location of the Pechersky Monastery the incorruptible relics of the schemonk Ioasaf were found. They are now kept in the Transfiguration church in Starye Pechery. The modern architectural ensemble of the monastery had formed by the XVII century. The domes of the Ascension Cathedral, the steepled over-the-gates church in honour of Evphimy of Suzdal and the Assumption church with a spacious monastery canteen are rising above the Volga.

The Convent of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
The Metochion of the Holy TrinitySt. Seraphim Diveevo Convent
The convent emerged from the amalgamation of three (Zachatievsky, Voskresensky and Proischozhdensky) ancient convents.
There is the renowned Metochion of the Holy Trinity-St. Seraphim Diveevo Convent located in Slavyanskaya street in Nizhny Novgorod.
The new convent was laid down in 1813 near the gate of Arzamas (now Lyadov squre). The main cathedral of the convent, built in the classicism style by I.I. Mezhetsky, was consecrated in 1823 in honour of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Now the convent is being restored to its original form.
The three-altar church in honour of Moscow saints St. Peter, St. Aleksiy, St. Jonah and St. Germogen was restored in 1998 and the Metochion of the Holy Trinity-St. Seraphim Diveevo Convent was given jurisdiction over it. There you can find copies of the miracle-working icon “Glykophilousa” and a copy of the icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov the Wondermaker with a part of his relics, icons of St. Aleksandra, St. Martha, St. Helen – Diveevo saints.

There are more than 40 orthodox temples in Nizhny Novgorod. Tutelary saints of Nizhny Novgorod (except the founder Georgy Vsevolodovich) are reverend St. Makary Zheltovodsky, St. Evphimy, Suzdal archimandrite, reverend Ioasaf Pechersky wonder-worker, saint bishop Dionisy.
The Cathedral of Mikhail Archangel – “A Heart of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin” The cathedral dedicated to Mikhail Archangel was founded in 1221 together with the city. Originally it was a wooden church but in 1227 it was already built in stone. The present Russian architecture steeple-church look was rendered to the cathedral in 1631 by the work of an architect, Lavrenty Vozoulin aided by his stepped son Antipas. From architectural point of view the ensemble is peculiar for being a church joint with a bell-tower. Besides, there is interred a patriot of Russian land, Kuzma Minin, in the cathedral.
The Church of Holly Mirrhbearers (Znamenskaya Church) – “A Baptistery of Old Rus", (13 A, Dobrolyubova Street) This is one of the most ancient and beautiful churches of Nizhny Novgorod dated back to the 13th century. Originally there was a wooden church instead of the white-stone one. Saint Euthymius of Suzdal and Saint Macarius of the Yellow Water Lake and the Unzha, the Miracle Worker, were born and baptized at the parish of this church. In 1649 the stone church was built instead of the wooden one. It became the first church in the city build in the ship-like style.
The Church in the Name of Synaxis of the Most Holy Theotokos – “A Masterpiece of Russian Baroque”, (34, Rozhdestvenskaya Street) The history of one of the most beautiful churches in Russia is as rich as its exterior. This exquisite finely carved building amazes by its beauty and splendor. The church was built by the famous merchants, the Stroganovs, as a symbol of their dynasty inviolability. The church was consecrated only in 1719. There is preserved a unique baroque iconostasis carved gilded in the church. Only 43 icons dated to the 17th century out of 46 have been extant.
The Cathedral in the Name of Saint Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky – “An Ark Crowning the Conflux”, (3 A, Strelka)
This is the third highest church (87 m) in Russia after the Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour in Moscow and Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg and the only church in Russia that was put on a float board. The construction of the cathedral was made at the expense of All-Russia Fair Merchantry funds by L.V. Dal’ project and was consecrated in the name of Saint Blessed Prince in 1881 Alexander Nevsky. Crowning the famous Conflux (in Rus.: Strelka), it greets all the guests arriving to Nizhny Novgorod by the river. The official city guide of Nizhny Novgorod is www.visitnn.com

Спасский староярмарочный собор ( Ярмарочный проезд,10)
The Old Fair Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (10, Yarmarochny Proezd)
The white-snow decoration of the Fair complex, the Old Fair Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was consecrated in 1822. The art experts have called this cathedral “a small Isakiy” or “Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Miniature”. The project was made by Auguste de Montferrand, the creator of Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg. There is a theory that lots of know-how of the Old Fair Cathedral of Christ the Saviour were applied by Montferrand in Saint-Petersburg. The author of wall paintings was an Academician of Painting, A.V. Stupin (a founder of the
first province school of painting). The church crowned the major promenade street of the Fair and played a constituting part for the general architectural motif. The lower riverbank of the Oka used to suffer from flood and in course of time high water washed the filled ground. At the end of the 19th century R.Y. Kilewein renovated the Old Fair Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, first in Russia applying a unique technical solution for changing the old basement to a new one.

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour,
(7, Pereulok Krutoy)
(124, Sloboda Pechery)
The Church of AllMerciful Saviour (177 A, M. Gorkogo Street)
This is a unique example of church architecture dated to the 17th century. It is supposed that the church was built by merchant A. F. Olisov. This church is the unique example of a church in Russia that has the main space (the prayer hall) covered by “four-sided kreschataya bochka” (four-sides raised feather-edged roof). From architectural point of view the stone church is peculiar for having been built in the manner typical for Old Russian church architecture, thus the church demonstrates the connection of two architectural time periods: the wooden and the stone ones.
The white-stone Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is situated on the right riverbank of the Volga and marks the place where the ancient Pechersky Monastery of the Ascension used to be. The main relic of this temple is the relics of Saint Schemonk Iosaph which were found out due to the landslide of the Pechersky Monastery at the end of the 16th century. The monastery complex was moved to another place and there was made a log wooden church at the place of the relics invention. Then a new stone church of typical for that time architectural concept was built instead by the project of the first architect of Nizhny Novgorod Gubernia, Y. A. Ananjin.
The church was built to honour the memory of the tsar-piecemaker, Alexander the Third and to celebrate the miraculous escape of the tsar family during the train wreck on the 17th of October 1888 near village Borok.

The church was built in the style of fairytale Old Russian terem (palace) of the 17th century. In 1903 the church was consecrated. The painting in the church partially copies the paintings of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow and the Cathedral of Saint Vladimir in Kiev and were made on the basis of pictures of the painters Semiradsky, Nesterov, Vasnetsov and others.
Religious confessions of Nizhny Novgorod
Armenian Apostolic Church “Surb Amenaprkitch” (the Armenian Apostolic Church of Christ the Saviour) (Shevchenko Street)
Roman catholic parish of the Assumption (10 B, Studeny Lane)
The first Catholics appeared in Nizhny Novgorod in XVII century. Active formation of the catholic community began in XIX century. By 1914 the parish consisted of three churches, one of which was on Studeny Lane. Upon the project of architect M.I.Kuntsevich a big building in pseudogothic style was to be built here, but the beginning of World War I ruined these plans. In the end only a simple and low church was constructed. Today Church of the Assumption is situated nearby in the neighboring building, which in XIX century belonged to the estate of merchant Shchelokov.
The history of Armenian community is closely connected with the history of MakarievNizhny Novgorod Fair. Since 1828 there was an Armenian Apostolic church at the fair area built by the project of architect A. Leer at the expense of tsar treasury. That church was destroyed in the 30-ies of the 20th century. Social organization “Nizhny Novgorod Armenian Community” (established in 1993)

The Synagogue
(5 A, Grusinskaya Street)
(6, Kazanskaya Embankment)
At the end of the 19th century the area of Sennaya Square became the place of Tatar community. Thus the second mosque after the Fair one was built here in 1913–1915 by the project of architect P.A. Dombrovsky. In 1994 a building of madrasah “Makhinur” was built near the Cathedral Mosque of Nizhny Novgorod. The Muslim community is about 20 thousand people, the most of them are the Tatar.
In the last quarter of the 19th century there was developed a prominent Jewish community in Nizhny Novgorod consisted of merchants that worked at the Fair and lower middle class settled after army service. In 1879 the community purchased the land plot between Myshkin and Bolotov sidestreets (now: Universitetsky side-street and Gruzinskaya Street) for the Synagogue construction. The building was constructed in 1883 by the project of architect I.F. Neiman. The population of the Jewish community is about 15 thousand people.

ALEKSANDROVSKY GARDEN
Park “Switzerland”
The first in Nizhny Novgorod history public park – Aleksandrovsky garden – is situated on the right high river bank of the Volga near the Kremlin. The square of the garden is 35 hectare. The park was laid out in the 30-s of the 19th century by the command of Nicolay I and named after his wife Aleksandra Fedorovna. The author of the project was German court gardener K.Petstold – a master of romantic landscape compositions (English style). In Nizhny Petstold managed to create fashionable park-line landscape using rugged relief and water with a lot of scenery spots from which remarkable views of the Volga opened. ”This city which is royally placed above the whole East of Russia completely turned our heads. How delightful is its immense space. We were spluttering with admiration and before us we saw the living history of old Russia, people of which, these strong “high-bred” people, could value so much the life, its warmth and artistic merit. They did not like to settle down anywhere and anyhow…” Great Russian painter I.E.Repin
