INSPIRATION the CRESTA RUN is a natural ice skeleton racing toboggan track in eastern Switzerland, located in the winter sports town of st. moritz. the run is one of the few in the world dedicated entirely to skeleton. the st. moritz tobogganing club (SMTC) was founded in 1887 and is still seeking to obtain their historic flair.
approach The crestapack is the missing link between a modern trekking backpack and a traditional leather rucksack. It is for those who want to travel with style without the lack of functionality. For those who demand high-end performance from their products and love natural materials and fabrics.
The main feature of the crestapack is its ‘2 in 1‘ modularity. By separating the pack into two distinct stand-alone bags there is no longer need to choose between ‘big or small‘ for your purpose. This makes the crestapack your perfect companion on all your journeys and trips.

it all starts with the basic shape, followed by more and more details. i was basically modeling two backpacks, at first the top part before independently adding the bottom carry-on. the packs had to function individually thus this particular workflow was the only sensible option.

1 : THE C OMPANION The COMPANION provides generous and secure storage of about 34L. The large two-way zippers go all the way around the front which allows accessing your gear in a suitcase-like manner.
The carrying system is fully adjustable, padded and ergonomic shoulder straps provide comfortable carrying. There is a laptop compartment accessible from the side and two compression straps are keeping your gear in place.
The COMPANION is the ideal daypack for your day hiking, sight-seeing or even flights overseas.

TASK the idea was to create a lamp for a fellow student in the role of a client, incorporating his personality and personal preferences into the project. the classmate i did this project for was born in indonesia. he‘s a modest and quiet person who likes to see the beauty in the simple things in life. he also always forgets to turn his light of when he goes to sleep.
e tym o logy the fellow student has a twin sister. in indonesian, „kembar“ means „twin“, which is reflected in the two sticks in the design.
approach the lamp was supposed to be simple, with a slim silhouette, a puristic design and efficient in both power consumption and easy usability. illumination that „thinks“ and meets the different needs of the user.

en g i ne e r i ng The brightness is controlled by a proximity sensor. the primary led strips will work on full brightness if you are working at your desk. If you move away from the lamp, the brightness lessens and the secondary, warm “mood-led� takes over.
The result is an intuitive lighting experience which permanently saves power and makes the lamp a perfect accessory in your room.

de si g n kembar lamp is a table lamp made from natural materials (wood, copper and cloth) with two lighting units. The lamp is easily adjusted by a screw-cap and can be customized continuously in height and inclination. When flipped to passive mode, the kembar lamp becomes a „silent object“ on your desktop and with the secondary lightning unit, a mood for evening hours in your room is easily created.
The modest design allows the play of colors in the wood layers to add an additional touch and - by doing so - is completing the combination of design and technology.

visitors of our open day exhibition could experience the intuitive brightness adjustment themselves: an ultrasonic sensor was mounted inside the desk and arduino software was monitoring the users proximity.

PROBLEM up to a million people get infected by highly resistent bacteria in hospitals in germany every year. about 40.000 of them die. highest contamination is found on touch surfaces, even when they are cleaned regulary.
approach copper has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that kill 99% of bacteria on its surface. copper is easily malleable, affordable and versatile in its appearance due to different alloys.

in teamwork with philipp stienen.

task my fellow student philipp stienen and i wanted to create a modular desktop-speaker whose design could be used for a wider product range such as subwoofers and speaker towers. the reduction of parts and less elaborate engineering was essential.
approach basic sketches were quickly followed by cad modelling and animation. the design was reduced to two parts, rivets, and the speaker. the final assembly can be done by the user himself. different kinds of speakers may be included by slightly altering the main parts.
MATERIAL the cad model was rendered with metal (copper) as the main material. other materials such as wood or plastic are imaginable for a different feel, look and sound experience.

task „rocking the future“! creating a new rocking chair concept that is new, interesting and weird at the same time. thinking outside the box and promting questions. a chair that can be dangerous to sit on and teasing the user, making them curious to find out what it feels like.
d E s Ig n 51 cubes made of solid wood were used to create a „rocking sofa“ that seems solid at first, but is unstable once you take a seat. it is meant to be sculptural and maverick, using simple, seemingly static cubes combined with a „hovering“ visual effect.
si tting the cubes are connected by rubber poles that allow the segments to move around up to a certain extent once weight is distributed across it. this creates a „floating“ or „swimming“ feeling that is - given that the fact the chair is made of hard spruce wood - pretty comfortable and a lot of fun to sit on too.

task the new „erlkoenig barklub“ was meant to break new ground in the student-town erlangen: industrial flair and architecture, metropolis feeling combined with finest drinks that have never been served here before. the idea was to create a corporate design that went well with the clubs interior while conveying the clubs/bars avant-garde philosophy.
e tym o logy „erlkönig“ (or „erlkoenig“) is german for goethes poem „erlking“, but also describes a disguised prototype (car). those cars are well known for their patterned bodyworks in black and white. thus the logo is also illustrating a hidden crown in the letter „e“.

simple, reduced and „industrial“: the logo can easily be used in different sizes and media. the corporate design uses a lot of white space combined with a modern typewriter font and high quality, uncoated paper when printed. stamps are used to create an „eroded“ and distinct look.

pforzheim university started a students contest to design a new apparel line to represent the universitys different schools. this particular design is deliberately inspired by american high school clothing and meant to be worn within and outside the campus.

the first samples were printed with silk-screen. „school of design“ is of course interchangeable with the other schools of pforzheim university.

in germany, your schools ordinary hoodie or tshirt is generally not something you would wear casually in your freetime without attracting some funny looks. however, american college apparell is a shining example of successful school-wear, since the typical classic „college styled“ prints are something people recognise as fashionable nowadays. thus creating an individual print inspired by american high school apparell is one of the best ways to get students to represent their university in a smart way.
