NNSY CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH • MARCH STTF STAFF PICKS The Norfolk Naval Shipyard Diversity and Inclusion Office (Code 1103) and the African American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) presented “African Americans in Times of War,” a program dedicated to Black History Month Feb. 16, 2018 in Bldg. 163’s High Bay. The 2018 theme provided a framework for focusing on the roles of African Americans in every American war, from the Revolutionary War era to the present war against terrorism. Code 2301 employee Clinton McRae was the guest speaker for the event.

MARCH

Electronics Technician Jeffrey “Bear” Overman worked with the Rapid Prototype Center to create a device to eliminate the strain on workers when lifting and transporting 200-pound antennas around the Antenna Shop. The team came up with a lifting jig attachment for a forklift, which takes the stress off the user during the transportation process. Testing of the prototype was successful and a final version of the jig is being manufactured so employees can use the Antenna Lifting Jig on a daily basis.

Continuing success means aligning NNSY’s priorities with the future of ship modernization and repair… and the shipyard is invested in doing just that. With a focus on forward-thinking high-velocity learning and dependence on a young workforce, NNSY is evolving its processes and workflow to fit tomorrow’s needs. Planning for the future also means implementing emerging technologies. NNSY has resources dedicated to developing cleaner and more efficient ways of accomplishing the Navy’s mission. With an eye on innovation, NNSY will continue to lead the way.

Every day, the shipyard puts innovative ideas to work to create new and more efficient way to meet our mission. Read about NNSY’s technology and innovation projects in Service to the Fleet’s “Eye on Innovation” series.

NNSY Fiber Optics Subject Matter Expert (SME)/Instructor Christopher Nocon toured the four public shipyards with the Mobile Implementation Team (MIT) March 12-16, 2018 where he hand-delivered and showcased his fiber optic work station innovation. Originally developed in 2012, Nocon said he got the idea for the new work station while working on upgrades for the submarines. Nocon’s design was a gutted pelican briefcase that he created a racking system inside, setting up a plate where he would build the optics. “I created a work station that was able to double the amount of optics being worked on at a time,” said Nocon. “This streamlined my efforts on the job. In addition, it was able to turn a four-person job into a one-person job, providing an estimated savings of $50,000.”

Adam Fahy teamed up with the Rapid Prototype Center (RPC) to create a custom socket tool used to torque the staked bushing that holds the racking gear in place on all 2000-style framed breakers. It ensures the bushing does not come loose. The new socket engages twice the depth and with only a few thousandths of an inch clearance.

NNSY VOLUNTEERS RESTORE GUN MEMORIAL • APRIL STTF STAFF PICKS A group of NNSY volunteers, in partnership with the Cradock Civic League and NNSY Historian Marcus W. Robbins, worked to restore a naval gun memorial (honoring the War Dead of Norfolk County) and the war dead plaque that was dedicated and placed in Afton Square in Portsmouth July 4, 1929. The restoration effort emphasized the centuries-long partnership between the shipyard and the City of Portsmouth.

HOW INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY SAVE LIVES • JUNE STTF STAFF PICKS When he speaks about the events of April 10, 1963, Retired Navy Capt. Joe Yurso paints a vivid picture of what it was like after attack submarine USS Thresher (SSN 593) sank with 129 Sailors and civilians aboard. During his visit to NNSY in May 2018, Yurso, who was watch officer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during the accident, spoke to a group of Engineering and Planning Department employees about the implications of Thresher’s loss, most notably the establishment of the Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) Program.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE • JUNE STTF STAFF PICKS One of the most common phrases heard at the shipyard is to “strive for excellence.” Code 990 Training Coordinator Jeris Smith designed a program to spark motivation in students who attend Code 990 training, as well as develop a reward incentive for a job well done. Smith worked with management and was able to grant eight hours time off for students who received a perfect score, and four hours time off for those who scored 95 or better. He also threw a pizza party for the students to celebrate their accomplishments.

FWP HOSTS SPEED MENTORING EVENT • AUGUST STTF STAFF PICKS The Federal Women’s Program hosted a speed mentoring event in 2018. Speed mentoring, similar to speed dating, is a time-bound approach to networking and relationship building. Focusing on quick-hit information, speed mentoring allows participants to get guidance and insights on topics like career planning, advancement and work-life balance—all in one setting. Leaders from virtually every major department were available to speak with employees and answer questions while providing valuable career advice.

NNSY & NFPC HIRING PUSH STAFF PICKS As NNSY and NFPC experience rapid workload growth, the need to fill various positions spurred a months-long hiring push. Thousands of job candidates attended six career fairs throughout Hampton Roads, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey as NNSY and NFPC searched for the best and brightest future employees to meet the mission. More than 1,000 job offers were extended as the most qualified applicants transitioned from hopeful to hired, bringing NNSY’s workforce to more than 11,000 employees.

Eisenhower “IKE” (CVN 69) Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) team was awarded a Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) safety flag during an Aug. 18, 2018 All Hands call on the flight deck. From the very beginning of the availability, safety was a top priority for Ship’s Force, and the project team’s dedication to safety saw a reduction in the Total Case Injury (TCI) rate from a 3.8 to a 2.41 for a carrier project.

PRESERVING NNSY’S HISTORY • AUGUST STTF STAFF PICKS NNSY’s Heritage Room in Bldg. 1500 showcases the shipyard’s 252 years of history. Shop 64 woodworkers and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) engineers designed and completed the project, which was conceived by then-Shipyard Commander Capt. Scott Brown. The Heritage Room’s grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony took place June 22, 2018. The room is open during work hours for employees to visit and enjoy the many historical artifacts preserved therein.
