CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE MATT WATERS, MARINE MACHINERY MECHANIC| SHOP 38, NNSY Excerpt from December 2019 STTF | by Kristi Britt, Public Affairs Specialist The NNSY Apprentice Program Class of 2019 valedictorian was Matthew N. Waters, a Shop 38 marine machinery mechanic. The 29-year-old Western Branch High School graduate completed the program with a 3.914 GPA. “These graduates possess unrelenting perseverance and commitment to quality and excellence to serve America’s Shipyard,” said Waters. “It’s often a marathon that teaches you a lot about the finish line. Without the hurdles I’ve encountered, I wouldn’t be here today. Use your obstacles to make you stronger and smarter. Embrace the chaos, conquer your fears, and become the best version of yourself. Take pride is what you do, don’t take it for granted, don’t ever compromise your integrity, strive for your goals, and selflessly serve America’s Fleet.”

CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE SHAWN POWELL, MARINE ELECTRICIAN SHOP WORK LEADER | SHOP 51N, NNSY Excerpt from March 2019 STTF | by April Brown, former Public Affairs Specialist Shawn Powell feels her job as a material handler is very important to our mission, her coworkers, and helps those on the waterfront working on the boats. Powell’s job eliminates supervisors waiting for materials they need for their team to work on the boats. She is behind the scenes gathering, staging, and storing materials for all of the shifts on the USS Wyoming (SSBN-742) project. “Being a material handler is a busy job, but it is really important to those on the deck plates,” explains Powell. “This process cuts out a lot of extra time that they need to focus on the project. They come and pick up the designated materials when they need it, take it back to the boat, and production flows the way it should.”

CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE TASHA BEVERLY, PROGRAM MANAGEMENT ANALYST | CODE 1190, NNSY Excerpt from June 2019 STTF | by Troy Miller, Public Affairs Specialist “After 12 years of active service in the U.S. Navy, I decided to get out to raise my family,” said Beverly. “Becoming a member of the Veterans Employee Readiness Group (VET-ERG) was a way for me to still be among my peers who have a link to serving in the military as I did.” Under Beverly’s tenure of president of the VET-ERG, she helped start the tradition of placing flags on veterans’ gravesites at Portsmouth Cemetery for Memorial Day. She also involved with arranging a trip to Washington D.C. for shipyard veterans. Beverly thought going to Washington D.C. and visiting the various war memorials was a great way to show respect to those who served before her.

CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE MARK RAGSDALE, DOCKING PLANNED INCREMENTAL AVAILABILITY PIERMASTER | USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77) Excerpt from August 2019 STTF | by Kristi Britt, Public Affairs Specialist “If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.” For USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) Piermaster Mark Ragsdale, this quote is more than a passing line about sports. It’s about the life at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and those who take on the challenges each day to serve the fleet. “Each day at America’s Shipyard we face new challenges that we must overcome,” said Ragsdale. “Each of us has a part to play and we have to work together. For some, our jobs may seem too hard to ever complete. It is hard work but that’s exactly why I love it here. It takes those committed to the mission and the drive to excel to work here. ”

JUL 2020 At Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), it is important to nurture the ideas of the workforce into the innovative processes and technologies of tomorrow. New equipment has been popping up throughout the waterfront, like the cold spray booth in Code 930, and the new hydraulic punching machine in Shop 17. In addition, the NNSY Technology and Innovation Lab hosts various technologies for research and use by the shipyard, including virtual reality, exoskeleton suits, robotics technology, laser scanning, additive manufacturing and more. After trying to repair it, he plugged it back in . . . only for it to catch on fire. Far removed from those humble beginnings, this Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Supervisory Mechanical Engineer now solves some of the most complex problems for the U.S. Navy Fleet, and was recognized as a Federal Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers at a Feb. 22, 2019 ceremony in Washington D.C. “It was a combination of humbling and exciting at the same time, to be recognized at that level,” he said. “Knowing that my work at NNSY was significant enough to warrant this type of recognition was very satisfying.”

The leadership, safety, radiological control, information technology, legal, Command Evaluation and Review (CERO), security, process improvement, quality assurance, engineering, operations, supply, comptroller, lifting and handling, base support, outreach, diversity and inclusion, admin and industrial services, fire safety, emergency management, public affairs, the Shipyard Instructional Design Center, and business and strategic planning teams help to support NNSY mission and fulfill NNSY’s motto. CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE LEAH KAHN, EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST | CODE 105, NNSY Excerpt from November 2019 STTF | by Michael Brayshaw, Lead Public Affairs Specialist You might say Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Emergency Management Specialist Leah Kahn has always been prepared for a crisis. A self-professed “very cautious person,” her first brush with crisis management came at six years old seeing heavy smoke billowing from a neighbor’s garage that had caught fire. Scampering out of the swimming pool, she quickly arranged for evacuation loading up the family car with her menagerie of stuffed animals. She now serves as the Outreach Subject Matter Expert (SME) and coordinates with state and local agencies on NNSY emergency planning and response actions. With her husband being active duty Navy, Kahn knows her time at NNSY is limited, so she works with urgency in making every day constructive and ensuring every working relationship is strong.

CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE OFFICER JESSICA BRENNEMAN | NNSY POLICE Excerpt from December 2019 STTF | by Allison Conti, Public Affairs Specialist “You can take my hair, you can take my ta-tas, but you will NEVER take my fight.” This is Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Police Officer Jessica Brenneman’s life motto. Brenneman was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, May 1, 2018, at the age of 29. While still undergoing radiation therapy, Brenneman started training at a gym in Virginia Beach. The training process for bodybuilding is grueling. All of her hard work paid off as she competed in the 2019 National Physique Committee (NPC) Baltimore Classic Oct. 26, winning first in the Armed Forces Figure Division and placing third in Novice and fourth in the True Novice Figure Divisions. Her support network included her NNSY work-family. “They’ve been amazing. I honestly can’t thank everyone enough at the precinct.”

NOV 2020
Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) celebrates its 253rd birthday Nov. 1. Each year, NNSY takes lessons from its past to build a more vital future. One of the most impactful changes made in recent years was establishing NNSY’s C.O.R.E. values Care, Ownership, Respect, and Excellence. These values drive everything we do as a community at America’s Shipyard. Photos by Tony Anderson and Shelby West, NNSY Photographers

CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE JAMAL BAZIL, NUCLEAR ENGINEER | CODE 2320, NNSY Excerpt from October 2019 STTF | by Hannah Bondoc, Public Affairs Specialist It takes courage to stand up and speak when something is wrong—something Nuclear Engineer Jamal Bazil from Cleanliness and Innovation (Code 2320) does not lack. Brazil spoke at the Federal Womens’ Program (FWP) Leadership 360 about showing bravery in the face of adversity or discremination. “If something is wrong and you do not say something, you are allowing it to happen. Even if the incident does not concern you, you can still speak up about it. In the name of accountability, employees owe it to one another to not only speak up, but to hold each other to a high standard in day-to-day interactions.”
C.O.R.E. CORNER RESPECT I provide meaningful feedback.

CARE + OWNERSHIP + RESPECT = EXCELLENCE JAMES CURLING, SAFETY ADVOCATE | CODE 960, NNSY Excerpt from October 2019 STTF | by Hannah Bondoc, Public Affairs Specialist “No one gets hurt today!” is a good motto to have, but it would be moot without the commitment of people like Safety Advocate James Curling from Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s (NNSY) Piping Department (Code 960) looking out for safety of shipyard employees. “I like to see what works and what can we improve,” he elaborated. “If there’s ever an issue with anything that endangers employees working at the forefront of fixing the ships, I just need to know who to contact and the proper paperwork, find the material, and I will get it fixed or fix it myself!”
