Students in Hampton Roads were treated to a private screening of “Hidden Figures” thanks to Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) organizations in Hampton Roads Feb. 25. NNSY partnered with Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Systems Center Atlantic STEM Outreach, National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley, the Society of Women Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and other private donors to host a private screening of “Hidden Figures” for Hampton Roads students Feb. 25. The screening was a partnership in celebrating African American History Month and National Engineering Month in Hampton Roads to bring “future figures” together and show them how their passion for STEM can translate into a future career. Immediately following the movie presentation, there was a panel discussion with representatives from each partnering organization during which students asked questions about STEM. The panel included Dr. Lydia Simmons, the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at NNSY. (Photo by Kristi Britt, NNSY Public Affairs Specialist)

Portsmouth water system to temporarily change to chlorine As part of routine maintenance procedures to ensure the quality of our drinking water, the City of Portsmouth, in conjunction with the Cities of Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Suffolk and the County of Isle of Wight, has temporarily switched from chloramines to free chlorine as the disinfecting agent added to city water. This change, which has been done in accordance with state and federal regulations, will pose no impact to public health or to the safety of City water. The switch to free chlorine will continue until March 28, with a return to chloramines on March 29.

nnsy participates in read across america March 2 Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) partnered with Douglass Park Elementary School and Westhaven Elementary School in Portsmouth, Virginia for their annual Read Across America Day March 2. Read Across America Day, an observance on the school day closest to the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, is part of a year-long program focused on motivating children and teens to read. The program, led by the National Education Association (NEA), is celebrating its 20th year of building a nation of readers one story at a time. “These types of events are opportunities for our command to engage the community, particularly at a younger age so we can encourage direction and help the students to enjoy reading that would be pivotal in their development,” said NNSY Diversity and Inclusion Director Dr. Lydia Simmons. “Working with students helps to provide them with opportunities to grow and excel in their learning.” (Above: Photos by Shayne Hensley, NNSY Photographer; Below: Photos by Jennifer Zingalie, NNSY Public Affairs Specialist)

This temporary change affects water for all Portsmouth water customers, including those customers in Chesapeake and Suffolk who receive water from the City of Portsmouth. It is possible that residents may notice a chlorine-like smell, often referred to as a “swimming pool smell,” during the change. This is normal and it is not harmful and you will not need to do and anything. Also, it is possible that you may notice brief discoloration - again, this is normal and will dissipate as the change continues. Kidney dialysis patients and fish owners should continue to follow the standard water treatment process for chloramines, as this also removes free chlorine. For more information, call the Portsmouth Water Quality Laboratory at 539-2201 ext. 232.

NNSY OPERATIONS SECURITY (OPSEC) BULLETIN

DUMPSTER DIVING

March 2017

Would you believe that something as simple as sifting through the trash gives our enemies valuable opportunities to threaten NNSY’s Operations Security and even your personal credit?? What we throw in the trash can provide an adversary Critical Information necessary to defeat our objectives. There are a lot of personal and work-related items found that can potentially lead to credit card fraud, identity theft and impede our mission capabilities. Shredding all paper at home and at work plays a huge role in NNSY’s mission success. First, it enhances the OPSEC program by making it virtually impossible for our adversaries to gather usable information from our trash and second, it makes it extremely difficult for criminals to steal identities of people associated with NNSY. Never forget that we are a nation at war, and all of us must do our part to protect our information from being used against us.

While 71 percent of Americans have a fire escape plan, only 47 percent of those have practiced it. One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life-threatening. In fact, the time available is usually much less . Only 8 percent of those surveyed said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm was to get out.
