The Divine Light

THE DIVINE LIGHT

Nur, translating to divine light in Turkish and Arabic, creates a tower composed of simple geometry. The base structure takes form from the division of a rectangle into two segments, following a natural cycle of growth and decay. The emphasis upon the act of breaking down simple geometry and allowing it to return to its origins energizes the soft curvilinear form. This act also informs the triangular array that encapsulates the interior. The triangle divides the emission of light within, creating unique reflections of voids within. The division of geometry is also carried forth to the central skylight, spanning from the rooftop to the central void, emphasizing the division of the rectangle. The facade allows for unique indoor-outdoor, as well as, private-public spaces within the tower, carrying forth the green belt that surrounds the site, blurring the distinction between the traditional horizontal ground and the vertical tower. Overall, the mathematical and formal simplicity is reinforced by the curvilinear form of the parametric tower. The Nur tower creates an aura of profound airiness and elegant form through the translation of light of the voids within.

The rhythm within the act of division, realizes a centralized void. This void is further emphasized by the skylight, which travels from the roof to the centre of the building. The skylight is parametrically designed to expand and contract based upon solar exposure. The facade also follows a similar logic. The upper-most floors, which are heavily exposed to the light travelling through the skylight, are covered with a dense overlay of closed triangular windows; these triangles open up when the skylight closes.
