Return of Passenger Jets Boosts Airport Flights Watertown International Airport breaks records By Brian Molongoski | Fly NNY

AMANDA MORRISON / FLY NNY Passengers disembark from a plane and head towards the terminal after landing at the Watertown International Airport.

T

he return of passenger jets at Watertown International Airport is off to a record-breaking start.

Since reintroducing the 50-seat model CRJ 200 jet aircraft July 6, passenger use of American Airlines's twice-daily flights to and from Philadelphia has increased 42 percent compared to last July. Additionally, July's 4,998 total passenger count set a new record for the number of passengers going to and from Watertown International in a single month since Jefferson County took control of the airport in 2005. 8

FLY NNY

<< September 2017

"We're thankful people are using the service and excited the regional jet is back," Watertown International Airport manager Grant W. Sussey said. "We're hopeful that the numbers will be good for the rest of the summer season into winter." Prior to July, American Airlines had been using the 37-seat Bombardier Dash 8 turboprop plane for more than a year to accommodate construction projects at the airport, particularly last year's runway extension from 6,000 feet to 7,001 feet. Funding for the $3.5 million

extension was granted through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program in 2015. American Airlines will now keep the jet service at Watertown International year-round, which was ultimately the purpose of extending the runway by 1,000 feet. Larger passenger jet aircraft need certain runway lengths to land in winter conditions. The airport has exceeded 10,000 passenger enplanements since implementing its twice-daily Philadelphia flights, entitling it to $1 million from the Federal

COVER STORY

Aviation Administration every year. Last year saw 35,756 passengers flown to and from Watertown International Airport using the smaller Dash 8 aircraft. Having a higher number of passengers flying to and from the airport has helped decrease the airport’s dependence on the federal Essential Air Service program. EAS provides federal subsidies for smaller airports so they can have commercial flights. American Airlines' current annual subsidy for its air service at the airport

is $1,877,617. This is a decrease from the previous subsidy, which was over $3 million. President Donald J. Trump has threatened to eliminate the EAS program in his executive budget proposals, which has been met with resistance by Congressional lawmakers in New York state. Mr. Sussey said American Airlines changed the airport’s flights from Chicago to Philadelphia because the Philadelphia hub has better air traffic flows, in addition to better flight options in the Northeast and South. Watertown International has a handful of upcoming projects, including rehabilitation of the terminal apron, which is where aircraft are parked, refueled, unloaded or boarded. The $2.1 million reconstruction project will remove pavement deficiencies and improve drainage and lighting. Mr. Sussey expects construction on that project to begin sometime next year, adding that he is “excited” to get the apron fixed up. Other upcoming enhancements include reconstruction of an intersection between a runway and taxiway. Millions of dollars have also been invested in recently completed projects. Work was finished on a terminal expansion earlier this year. The expansion allowed the checkpoint to be straightened and included additional seating, bathrooms and wider space for passenger movement around the ticket counter. Two-thirds of the $700,000 project was funded through a state Department of Transportation grant and the rest was paid for with money from the county's Residential Community Initiative fund, meaning it did not cost local taxpayers. In 2015, the airport opened its Fixed Based Operator. The center consists of a new 14,400-square-foot hangar with conference and office space attached. The space also includes a conference room, pilot lounge, retail counter, flight school office and administrative office.

FEATURE

Travel Cool & Comfortable This Autumn By Ali Townsend | Fly NNY

T

raveling can be a stressful experience year-round, but there’s nothing worse than being anxious and uncomfortable while trekking to vacation during the hotter months. Autumn travel is meant for relaxation, recovery, and enjoyment. To ensure an easy and hassle-free trip, here are some tips to keep in mind while preparing for your next adventure! 1) CAPITALIZE ON WEBSITES THAT COMPARE PRICES

Whether you’re booking a flight, hotel, or bus, scoring a discounted price never hurts. The number of “deals” and prices that cover your computer screen as you search for bookings can be overwhelming. However, sites like KAYAK, Hotwire, and Trivago let you compare prices from all different resources. These services can provide prices you might not find otherwise, without any bias. This research can result in huge savings, especially for family trips! The money you save by getting the lowest price can support your more fun-filled activities. 2) PLAN FOR DELAYS

To avoid the drama that comes with the all too common flight delays, the best thing you can do is be prepared. The most important piece of this is to be mentally ready to deal with changes. Luckily, there are many flight tracker apps that provide up-to-date statuses. The best of these include

FlightAware and GateGuru. As much as we wish vacations could go as smoothly as possible, travel changes can make that difficult. Be wary that your flight could be pushed back or that your bus could be running late. Practice a go-with-the-flow attitude when it comes getting where you need to go. To ensure that delays do not affect the rest of your time, schedule appropriately! Plan all activities and reservations with delays in mind and leave enough space for mishaps to happen… because we know they do. 3) EXERCISE FUNCTION AND FASHION

Equally as important as being comfortable is being stylish. Although sweatpants and a T-shirt probably come

to mind when you think of “traveling comfortably,” there are tons of wardrobe options that allow for functionality and fashion. The most important thing to keep in mind – travel temperatures are ever-changing. There is quite often a 20-degree difference between the airport and the outdoors. The answer? Layers. Rather than a sweatshirt, bring a nicer sweater and apply if cold. Remove if warm. The time associated with travel can sometimes lead to messy hair and tired face. An easy fix is a hat, fashionable of course. Easy to carry and great at hiding flaws, it’s a great accessory to always have handy. To explore these clothing options and make your travel outfits your own, check out TravelSmith and Orvis. You might be crammed into a seat directly under the air-conditioning or on a sweltering tour bus, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look good! 4) BE WEATHER KNOWLEDGEABLE

If there’s one thing that can ruin a summer trip, its weather. Unfortunately, northern autumn months are not always sunny and warm. Avoid problems by staying stay up to date on the ever-changing weather. WeatherBug distinguishes itself with the phrase, “Know Before.” With WeatherBug, you can track patterns by the minute, watch the radar in motion, and learn about the surrounding area’s weather in case you need to relocate. This app provides you with so much information you won’t know what do with yourself – except be extremely prepared!

How to Make Your Vacation Go Smoothly

F

lying out of the same airport and with the same airline removes some travel surprises.

Vacations provide an opportunity to relax and unwind. Yet despite the benefits of vacations, a Google Consumer survey for the travel website Skift found that nearly 42 percent of the 1,500 American participants did not take any vacation days in 2014. People have plenty of reasons to avoid traveling, but many may stay home simply because they have not mastered the art of stress-free travel. Scheduling airline flights, booking accommodations, coordinating rental cars, and planning itineraries is not always so easy, but there are plenty of ways to make vacation planning easier. · USE A TRAVEL AGENT. There certainly are a long list of user-friendly travel apps and websites. However, there's something to be said about the ease of putting travel arrangements in the hands of a professional agent. Travel agents know the ins and outs of various resorts, cruise lines, airports, and hotels. That knowledge and expertise can remove the stress from vacation planning. Travel agents also may be privy to discount codes or other specials not open to the general public, and they can pass these savings on to their customers. · CHOOSE ALL-INCLUSIVE TRIPS. If the small details of travel cause you the greatest amount of grief, all-inclusive resorts can remove that problem. All-inclusive vacations pack amenities, food, activities, and sometimes transportation into one price. Once travelers arrive at the resort, they may not have to take their wallets out at all. All-inclusive vacations may not offer the same measure of

customization as other trips, but the ease of preparing for such trips is enticing. · BECOME AN AIRLINE'S REPEAT CUSTOMER. Flying the same airline again and again can be advantageous. Travelers will be familiar with the policies of the airline, including fees and restrictions regarding baggage. This cuts down on the amount of research that needs to be done prior to each vacation. Many airlines also offer frequent flier benefits that translate into everything from advanced boarding privileges to fare discounts to accumulation of airline miles to use on future flights. · PURCHASE TRAVEL INSURANCE. Travel insurance can be a worthy investment, especially for expensive vacations and business trips. Many plans offer protection against lost luggage, trip cancellation and some out-of-network medical services. Use a service such as InsureMyTrip to find the right travel plan. · SWITCH TO A TRAVEL-FRIENDLY CREDIT CARD. For those traveling internationally, a credit card with no foreign transaction fees is a must. Another thing to consider is a "smart chip" credit card. Such cards have a special unique chip embedded in them, and these chips serve as an added measure of security. Many retailers, restaurants, hotels and public transit across Europe and Asia require these cards for transactions and cannot process older swipe and sign cards. Travel can recharge a person's proverbial batteries. Savvy travelers know that there are many ways to remove some of the more aggravating aspects of traveling. ~M.S.

Easy Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Getting Sick While Traveling

T

ravel and tourism is big business. According to research from the World Travel & Tourism Council in conjunction with Oxford Economics, the travel and tourism industry outpaced the global economy for the sixth consecutive year in 2016. With so many people traveling for business or pleasure, it can be easy for illness to spread. Travelers concerned about their vulnerability to colds or other ailments may be unable to avoid cramped airline cabins or crowded restaurants, but there are ways for both business travelers and vacationers to reduce their risk of getting sick while on the road. 路 STAY HYDRATED. People may remember to drink water when sitting at their desks in the office or lounging around at home, but travelers who are busy seeing the sights or attending seminars may forget to stay hydrated throughout the day. That can increase one's susceptibility to illness, as fluids carry nutrients to the cells and flush bacteria from the bladder. Older travelers should be especially vigilant about staying hydrated while traveling, as the Harvard Medical School notes that older men and women do not sense thirst as much as they did when they were younger. 路 CONTINUE EXERCISING. Even vacationers whose primary goal when traveling is to relax and unwind may want to squeeze in a little physical activity during their travels. The U.S. National 16

<< September 2017

Library of Medicine notes that physical activity can flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, potentially reducing one's chances of getting a cold, the flu or another illness. In addition, exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells that could help the immune systems of physically active people detect illnesses earlier than the immune systems of sedentary men and women. 路 PURCHASE HAND SANITIZER. One of the easiest ways to get sick while traveling is to come into contact with germs. Travelers tend to be out and about instead of locked inside hotel rooms, so their exposure to germs is likely greater while traveling than it is at home. Airport security agents may discard hand sanitizer at security checkpoints, so it may be unwise for travelers to bring sanitizer with them on their trips. Instead, travelers can purchase some at their destinations, carrying it with them and routinely applying it to combat germs. 路 GET SUFFICIENT SLEEP. Traveling alters routines, and some travelers may find themselves getting inadequate sleep on the road. Studies have indicated that sleep helps sustain a fully functioning immune system, and that chronic sleep loss, which may be a greater concern for business travelers than vacationers, can impair the immune system. When traveling, men and women should make a concerted effort to get adequate sleep each night. Traveling can be a jolt to the body and make it more vulnerable to illness. But no matter how often a person travels, he or she can take steps to protect their bodies getting sick while on the road. ~M.S.

Allegiant to halt several flights:

Company plans to resume Florida trips to, from Ogdensburg in October By LARRY ROBINSON

A

llegiant Air will be dropping one route from Ogdensburg International Airport to Florida and adding a new one to the Sunshine State in November, according to officials with the low-cost carrier. In November, Allegiant will add Tampa Bay to its list of areas serviced from Ogdensburg, according to spokeswoman Krysta Levy. She said the “Tampa/St. Pete route” will take the place of the Fort Lauderdale route that has been offered from Ogdensburg since last year. She said Ogdensburg’s Orlando-Sanford route will stay in place. “The confusion was that they do take a short break for half of August and September, but that’s not a new break or anything we pull back many of our routes in that time period because it’s a pretty low fly period,”

Ms. Levy said. The announcement of the route change came a day after company officials said Allegiant will temporarily halt flights from Ogdensburg to Florida between mid-August and October. The hiatus is only temporary because this is typically a “low-demand” period for the airline to fly into the Florida market, according to company officials. But when flights resume this fall, there will be a new service operating twice weekly between Ogdensburg and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. The airport services the Tampa-St. Pete metropolitan area. The first flight for that destination is expected to be Nov. 16. Exact flight days and times will be available on the company’s website, Allegiant.com. In a statement Tuesday, a senior vice president for the company said the Tampa Bay area should become a popular destination for travelers from the north country and

from the Canadian markets that the airline serves out of Ogdensburg. “We’re thrilled to announce new, nonstop service to the Tampa Bay area for Ogdensburg travelers,” said Lukas Johnson. “We know this area is a popular destination, and we are excited to offer convenient, nonstop service at a fare that everyone can afford.” Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority officials also praised the additional route and the opportunity it provides for area travelers. Allegiant will offer a special introductory one-way fare of $59 for the first flights but tickets must be purchased by June 22 for travel by Feb. 13, 2018. Allegiant has been offering low-cost, nonstop flights to the Fort Lauderdale Airport and Orlando Sanford International airport since last year following completion of a $25 million expansion at the Ogdensburg airport.
